Resistance 3 Multiplayer: Passive and Active Abilities Detailed

Hopefully you caught the news yesterday that Resistance 3 has gone gold! We also debuted our new story-centric campaign trailer. You may also know that the Resistance 3 Multiplayer Beta early access has begun for owners of specially marked copies of SOCOM 4. We’re still very much in beta mode, with regards to fixes (especially for matchmaking to address the freezes and disconnects), so please keep reporting what you see. We hope to have a patch soon that will address many of these issues, but in the meantime, thanks for bearing with us.

In the spirit of the multiplayer beta, our new behind-the-scenes development diary discusses our inspirations in developing Resistance 3’s multiplayer philosophy, from play modes and weapons to special abilities. Hopefully you’ve caught our previous entries in the dev diary series, but if not, you can catch up here, here and here.

We hope you enjoyed this week’s developer diary. It’s been a fantastic collaboration between us and the PlayStation.Blog team, and we’re really excited to show you the last couple as we get closer to launch on 09.06.11. We hope you’ve got your pre-order ready! Until then, we’ll see you on the beta!

  • I Dont Like this PSN Pass Stuff it gonna be with this game.

  • wow the abilities looks incredibly fun to use! My favourite is the leaper

  • Wow that was totally different from Resistance 2 online! Thats good!

Can’t wait to hand on this beta and game!

  • WANT!!!!

  • you guys get the matchmaking system to work again, i get excited yet again only to get really pissed that i cant even play MATCH because these terrible abilities you guys have put up are NOT BALANCED such as the wraith shield… i was playing a match where the entire team was spamming this and all were using it at the same time! can you guys at insomniac please get it together, im a huge resistance fan and loved both R:FOM and R2, so far all ive been getting is disappointed with this beta not working and then just not enjoying the game at all because of balance issues. I wont be getting this game at all if things dont change, its sad that killzone 3 (huge Killzone fan) was a huge cod knock off and failure. Now it seems like the money\cod epidemic is spreading to yet another game, relying too heavily on special abilities/perks

  • oh yea SPAWN SYSTEM, i was getting spawn killed throughout the entire match, please put more effort into patching this crap out like you guys (tried) did in R2, i shouldn’t be spawning next to THE OTHER TEAM

  • Personally very disappointed in the Beta. I just cancelled my pre-order at Gamestop and put the money towards Uncharted and MW3. I felt the online was very jagged and the gameplay just not smooth. I really wish Insomia could have kept on track with the first Resistance. Same color scheme, controls and gameplay flow. Sorry but I will not be buying this. Maybe rent just for Single player.

  • The Beta has been EXCELLENT!!! W00T!

It’s a little shame that the Multiplayer doesn’t have to option to play as R:2 co-op. Some people hate it… nevertheless there are alot of people who just play MP Co-op only and haven’t even touched Campaign or Deathmatch.

I would buy a DLC for just that option. I think there are quite a few people who do enjoy Teaming up with specific roles in the group.

TO SCEA: Separate screen for split-screen play with new PS Monitor… how about an option to make it Muli-Screen for Single player. i.e. Nvidia/Ati multi-screen view.

  • Hello, just briefly tried the beta. I’m not sure where to send feedback, but I heard you can post it here.

I feel the aesthetics of the game could be improved with some minor tweaks.

    1. The weapon model on screen when walking feels rigid, it does not move enough to give the impression of walking, more like gliding or sliding. Perhaps you could increase the bob factor?

    2. The ambient background noise is lacking, sure you have the welshman on the tannoy in the background, but it’s too quiet. I feel that perhaps if you add in some harsh wind, distant gunfire and perhaps some subtle ambient music in there it won’t be so quiet.

Also just a personal opinion but I feel the game could be more fun if you increased the player speed of all classes by a small factor (0.1, 0.2) to encourage strafing, moving and discourage camping and lurking.
