Twisted Metal Release Update

Hey all! David Jaffe here with some good news and bad news on behalf of myself, my Eat Sleep Play partner and Twisted Metal co-director Scott Campbell, the entire Eat Sleep Play team, and Sony Santa Monica.

First the good news: Eat Sleep Play and Sony Santa Monica are cranking like mad to get a fantastic Twisted Metal build ready for both Gamescom and PAX Prime! For those not in the know: Gamescom is August 17th-21st in Cologne, Germany and PAX Prime will take place here in America August 26th-28th in Seattle, Washington. Both shows are open to the public but PAX – I believe- is already sold out. If you’ve got PAX Prime tickets, I can’t wait to see you there! I hope you’ll swing by the Twisted Metal booth and give our game a try!

At Gamescom and PAX we’ll be showing off a brand new level called Thrills & Spills Amusement Park! It’s one of our favorite all time Twisted Metal levels and it’s filled with the over the top destruction, strategic level choices, and twisted humor that fans of the series have come to love and expect. Players at both shows will also get hands on with TEAM HUNTED, a brand new mode that we’ll be unveiling – for the first time ever – at Gamescom. We’ll also be premiering the new Dollface story trailer which delves into just what makes that nutty-but-sexy pink-haired freak tick.

And at both shows we’ll be handing out some super cool, super creepy Sweet Tooth masks! Halloween will be here before you know it and we want Twisted Fans to be able to represent their favorite slasher in style!

Ok, so now…the bad news. Or at least the ‘news that seems bad at first but after you read the rest of my post I’m sure you’ll agree that it’s actually fantastic news’ news. So here it is:

We’re not shipping Twisted Metal October 4th, 2011. We’re going to miss our date. We’re going to be late.

Ugh! I know, I know. A lot of dedicated, supportive, passionate Twisted Metal fans have been waiting for the return of Calypso’s demented contest for a long time but the truth is: we’re just not ready yet.

Sony has been – and remains – a super supportive champion and collaborator on this title and all of us at Eat Sleep Play are so grateful that their patience and generosity will allow us the extra time needed to polish our demented baby until it shines. NOTE: I don’t actually think that qualifies as a mixed metaphor… just a bad one. But the ‘demented baby’ part was really cool to me, and it felt very Twisted Metal-y, so I’m keeping it in this post.

Anyway – it sucks bad when games miss their announced launch dates. We’re gamers too and we know how annoying it is. It’s disappointing and frustrating and it really takes the wind out of your sails if you’re a fan that has been looking forward to playing a title for a long time. Thing is, you gotta trust me when I tell you that – with this extra time for tuning and polish – the game is going to be so much better than it already is. And if you played Twisted Metal and liked it at E3 or Comic-Con, or if you get to play it (and you enjoy it) at one of the August shows, just imagine how much more fun the final game will be with some extra time, polish, and love.

There’s a great, classic industry saying by legendary Nintendo designer – and personal hero – Shigeru Miyamoto that goes a little something like this:

‘A late game is only late until it ships. A bad game is bad until the end of time.’

Now, if we shipped Twisted Metal tomorrow – going off the response from folks who have played it – I assure you, it would never be a bad game. Not even close. But we’re aiming for a heck of a lot more than that! With Twisted Metal we plan to ship a multiplayer classic. We plan to ship the best Twisted Metal ever made. We plan to convert a lot of folks who think vehicle combat is a relic best left to 90′s nostalgia. And we plan to explode the belief that the only relevant kind of shooter is a first person one (or a 3rd person one, where you play a human… with a tee shirt not all the way tucked in :)…).

Most importantly, we plan on treating you – the kind folks who play our game (and pay our bills) – like the VIPs that you are. You only deserve our best and we appreciate your understanding as we take a little more time to guarantee that our best is what we deliver.

Twisted Metal for PS3 will ship early 2012. Stay tuned for more details.

@70 Are you referring to David Jaffe? He’s known in the industry as one of the most ballsy and honest person out there.

It’s all good David, you guys have always been one of my favorite developers and I am pretty sure you guys wont let me down. Thanks for being different and delivering a different experience, to show how and what video games are suppose to be.

I would like a collectors edition to come with this game. Maybe it would come with a figure of sweet tooth’s ride? Huh? /wink /wink

Oh and please David Jaffe, don’t give this game rediculous trophies that will take like 100 hours to platinum the game…

I hope this doesn’t sound bad but I am so glad that this game has been delayed now I can go and pre order it now. I didn’t before just because of some other games that are coming out that I wanted to get before Twisted Metal but now that it will be delayed until 2012 this will be the first title I will purchase in 2012. Plus I am glad that they are taking time to make the product better and not going the PC way like hurry up and release and lets patch it up latter. That is one of the main reasons I dont pc game.

I’m extremely aggrivated now with ESP due to the fact that this is the 2nd time for a delay. Honestly it’s an excuse to me due to the fact that they can simply patch the game later. Hey Jaffe how about delaying it 2 more times to make things even more crappy!!! The hell with us right? BETTER BE SOME MORE EXTRA STUFF FOR PREORDERRING THIS NOW!!!!!!!

I think this is for the better. There will be A LOT of AAA games with big HYPE in OCT-DEC 2011, so it was a great decision. Now, it is a win – win situation; they get more money and we get a better game :D

I am extremely disappointed in this news, but at the same time, completely understand. Especially with the switch to the M rating, you guys need a good extra four or five months to retool some things and continue to polish in order to make sure everything is perfect. Also, October 4th is a crowded time, I want you guys to have your own release date and not be bunched up with other games. Smart artistic and business decision by yourself and Sony.

I’ve waited 10 years for this game, but I can wait a little more knowing that this Twisted Metal is going to be amazing, and get even better with more development time.

Take all the time you guys need, either way, I know myself and other Twisted fans will be there day 1!

P.S. Looking forward to new mode!!!!! The more, the better!!!!

+ MaximMicheal on August 6th, 2011 at 1:11 pm said:

Well there’s always a pro and con for game titles being delayed. The pro: Eat, Sleep and Play will have time to make changes and add new material for the game and possibly fix bugs and glitches. The con: For consumers, like myself, I was really looking forward to the game but already this fall there’s too many titles I’ll be purchasing such as: Resistance 3, Batman: Arkham City, Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception, Dead Island and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3.

BTW Will there be a beta sometime at the end of the year or early 2012?

I would be sad, but my wallet is just so happy right now. :p

And a more polished and awesome game is always welcome. Better to have improvements on the disc than just release as is and just patch stuff later.

Ah, Jaffe ol’ boy. I don’t believe Sony would ever tell you ‘No.’ Perhaps you’re done responding to comments in this section and back to work on Twisted Metal but, I loved the post in reference to Uncharted 3. So, sounds like you’re going to challenge Mass Effect 3 to Game of the Year next year then. Alrighty then. I read earlier concerning the release of Resistance 3. That it was already being pressed and the multiplayer was in beta and getting pressed. I don’t think you’d like to smack Insomniac in the face, though you’re very open about it but when the mentioned patching the game at launch, I thought “Jaffe wouldn’t have anything of that and would in fact smack his team in the face,” as you’d once said games were never that way. You worked till it was done and then released it. None of this day one update. Should be a year. When I read this, that’s what I thought of. Jaffe living up to his philosophy. You’re a gamer like us and you want that ultimate experience and not a ‘day one update.’ Thanks for always keeping us in mind and that its always about us, not all that corporate bull. You’re the man Jaf.

Well im glad, there was way too many games coming out this fall, and i was afraid some of them would never get played.

+ angelspawn77 on August 6th, 2011 at 8:37 pm said:

It sucks, but as long as the game turns out great and some improvements are made it will make it worth it. Plus there are too many games coming out in the fall and its better to wait it out and give people a great game in a less crowded time.

+ rog0705 on August 6th, 2011 at 9:45 pm said:

Just make a great game. So much stuff this fall that it’s already too crowded anyway. Be great to have a great game early next year.

Ah, so TM is going to be releasing about the same time as Starhawk, I bet Lightbox is thrilled with that decision. ESP and LB must really hate eachother, and I could see you guys competing for sales in 2012.

You know what, this might actually be a good thing. Cause if each studio is trying to get more sales, that inevitably means they will try to make their games as good as possible to ‘out shine’ the other. Which means win-win for the consumers.

Here is a tip Eat Sleep Play, go with server lists over matchmaking and you will have 1upped Lightbox by a HUGE margin.

And so the battle of the vehicular combat games begins…

I cried when I read this post. First because of the delay, and second because how much I miss playing twisted metal, and how I know this one will exceed my expectations. Twisted Metal fan 4ever.

What I don’t understand is why would they need more time? Other games out there get there’s polished in the time frame. Hell it was suppose to be launched early 2011…now early 2012? No offense but don’t bother with a release date until you’re for sure 100% cuz that is a downer to get us all hyped for what?…..nothing. To me the game looks great already so that’s why I’m so bothered with this. Can we at least get a multiplayer demo by oct 4th to keep us busy?

I’ve been counting the days till the release of this game .. I even marked off a week of work for that week of release in October. . taking the wind out of my sails is an understatement at this point.

I don’t see how you guys were behind enough to push this game back all the way till 2012.. sounds like a mix of that Sony just not wanting to release the game in a crowded fall market.

128

+ Biz_Markee on August 8th, 2011 at 7:25 am said:

Not to sound like a broken record but this has NOTHING to do with polish. This has everything to do with comfort and $$$$. Jaffe your sincerity is thinly veiled as nothing more than yours, and Sony’s greed. I get that you may actually change a few lines of code and make the leaves sway a little more in the wind, but to hid from the holiday scene and call it anything than what it is..cowardly, is disgraceful. Especially for a self-proclamied gamer lover. The only thing that surprises me at this point is that there isn’t going to be a Twisted Metal:Prologue as a $$$ grab. Oh wait there was. It just happened to be called Calling all Cars. How many AAA titles do you know that have had great sucess after being bumped out of it’s release window twice? Just sayin… 7.5 out of 10

129

+ RavageHeitaro on August 8th, 2011 at 8:46 am said:

:( Don’t worry Jaffe, just keep working on that game and make it as awesome as it can be. I’ll be there day one regardless if it’s 2011 or 2012.

Unlike most people on here, I’m TOTALLY glad, there are one too many PS3 title I’m already planning on buying this year it almost makes me want to cry (I’m sure my wallet already is) and I was thinking about taking one off of my epically long list (13 of them, I’m sure that’s not a lot to some whose expenses are unlimited, but you know the deal…) and now thanks to this, I don’t have to! While I wait for my soon to be number one game to come out, I’ll attempt to reach 15th prestige on COD, only five more. *unenthusiastic yay* :)
