Abby Reyes's Avatar + Posted by Abby Reyes on Sep 12, 2011 // Sr. PR Specialist, Hardware

Hi everyone! Today, I’m back to talk to you about my favorite topic – PlayStation hardware! By now, you’ve probably seen that the official PS3 Wireless Stereo Headset is available now at a retailer near you. We’re very excited to bring you this advanced PS3 peripheral and we thought we’d take some time to walk you through the key features.

The Wireless Stereo Headset brings you an exceptional sound experience, a rechargeable battery, simple setup and a streamlined design that is as durable as it is comfortable. Available for $99.99 (MSRP) from retailers nationwide, the Wireless Stereo Headset gives you an audio advantage and high-quality voice quality (with a retractable microphone) at a seriously affordable price point. And yes, the official Wireless Stereo Headset pumps up more than PS3 games – Netflix, Blu-ray movies and more will benefit from the Wireless Stereo Headset’s crisp audio quality.

7.1 does NOT work with Blu-Ray. It is stated everywhere. They do however work in stereo and still sound really nice despite the lack of “virtual surround”. I believe the virtual surround still functions with Netflix, though.

My favorite feature by far is the slider to throttle between voice chat and game volume. When playing with my friends I tend to move the slider more towards voice with little game sound. Pretty much like hanging out together or talking on the phone while playing… Particularly with GT5 as I don’t need to hear where they are coming from.

@k1ngsnak3 I was just thinking the same thing. Got the USB dongle a few days ago.

But I’m definitely getting these. They should bundle them with Uncharted 3. Or even Resistance 3.

Side note: just realized all the 3′s coming/came out. BF3, MW3, Uncharted 3, Resistance 3…Infamous 3….I can dream

Maybe everyone should submit to PS Blog Share a suggestion that the headset is updated so that Blu-Rays also play with 7.1 surround sound.

It’s a big omission, especially when people say that Netflix is running fine with surround sound

@pitythefool852 I have a feeling it may be a hardware issue. The headphones do not have a built in DSP processor which is why it clearly states VIRTUAL surround. The 3.70 firmware must have a software driver for the DSP processing, which is fine when playing from within that environment. When you play a Blu-Ray you are leaving the software based environment supported therein and rely strictly on the ps3′s audio hardware to decode the audio streams from the blu-ray.
I’d love to see it, but I’m not optimistic….seems like it woulda been there from the getgo.

Disappointed to hear no Virtual Surround sound for Blu-Ray playback. Does that also mean no Virtual Surround for DVD playback?

I love the idea of a slider for Game volume vs Chat volume. Universal mute-all button FTW. Maintain radio silence…..now!

Do these get rid of the amazingly annoying constant beeping when you mute the mic like the Bluetooth headsets? It’s very distracting when I want to hear what my teammates are saying but have too much background noise and don’t want to distract them and to do that I have to deal with “beep-beep” every 2 seconds.

These would be great for an apartment so you can still experience the great sound of your games without upsetting the neighbors.

Might bite if I move to an apartment or if the price drops a bit.

For all of this, why is it not Bluetooth? It takes up a USB port!

Ok, I got one of these on release day… My observations…

Surround effect is a little weak, but its doable for $100

Sound quality itself is EXCELLENT. Comparable to higher price range headsets.

Very comfortable to wear for long periods of time.

Voice chat is clear.

A couple of negatives…

Sometimes you have to reboot your PS3 to get it to work for no apparent reason. No idea why.

You can hear NOTHING in these things… N-O-T-H-I-N-G! Someone can be sitting right next to you talking very loudly to you and you’ll never know. Which leads into the problem… You are always yelling, and it can’t be helped. I can’t tell you the amount of times my wife has asked me “please stop yelling” when talking to her, so I just avoid saying anything to her while I am using them.

No monitor for voice. As I said, you can’t hear anything so you are always yelling… Due to that fact, you are yelling into the mic quite often without knowing it… People love that… :P

All in all though, I love it.

Ppl complaining about it’s USB usage, I have a 10 port “Powerd” USB Hub which supplies it’s on power ( not drawing from the PS3 Power Supply) so I’ve been good with my 640gb Slim.

On the PS3 I believe u can have up to 7 Bluetooth devices.. and the PS3 Blu Ray Remote counts as (1). In my house I’m beyond “7″ with my moves, navigators, bout 4 or 5 DS3′s the (2) official bluetooth ear pieces so sounds about right to me to go IR movies sound cripple and the audio ( vocals) DAMN!

I was watching Rambo2 and towards the end (spoiler alert) when he lands the helo at base I heard the landing bars clink on the concret! I was like gtfoh had to rewind that Poland that was just Pro Logic LOL

I got mine for $70 shipped from amazon. That’s over now tho! :)

I bought this headset when Amazon was preselling it for $60. I LOVE IT! I wish there were a wireless headset this good for the 360. It’s a great return to form after the terrible experience I had with the official Sony in-ear set. I wish they had released this to begin with. Only tested it with Resistance 1 so far, but the Virtual Surround is amazing, and the set up is a breeze. Just plug it in, turn it on, AND IT JUST WORKS!

I came back to this post so I could see how many people were saying she’s hot. I expected to find a lot of people saying it. What did I find? A lot of creeps saying it. I have found there is a positive correlation in the amount of idiots who post saying a girl is hot (some guy who plays ps3 saying she’s hot on a post isn’t going to flatter her creeps) increases if the girl on the post/video is more attractive. This’ll get me an A in psychology…

Also the headset looks pretty nice but i don’t like that it’s wireless and if the bluetooth port is on the front of the headset I imagine if you want it to be “wired” you’ll be seeing a blueray charge wire out of the corner of your eye the whole time.

First of all, JimmyHACK my friend thank you for your contribution to the blog. :) I’ve used this headset with windows 7 and the mic works perfectly, I’ve had extended calls on Skype with no problems and the audio is crystal clear and with no interference.

Secondly to everyone, this headset is absolutely the best accessory you could get for your ps3 next to more controllers, a keyboard, an HDTV, and the Bluetooth blue ray remote (if you do allot of video, DVD, and Netflix watching.) I swear I wish PlayStation did more promoting for this headset because its mind blowing!!! I’m actually glad that they went with the usb dongle so that it’s more universal and can be used with computers instead of just locking it down for the ps3 only. To be honest if I didn’t own a PS3 I still would have gotten this headset to use with my computer its just that good.
