Get Ready: PS Vita is Coming February 22nd

This afternoon on stage at the Web 2.0 Summit in San Francisco, I shared some very exciting news that I know the PlayStation Nation has been anticipating since we unveiled PlayStation Vita back in January. For those looking to get their hands on the ultimate in handheld entertainment, I’m thrilled to let you know that starting on February 22, 2012, PS Vita will be available at major retailers in the United States, Canada, Latin America, and Europe.

PlayStation Vita North America 3G packaging

Our first-party studios and an army of publishing partners have been extremely hard at work to ensure that PS Vita launches with a vast library of titles that deliver unique gameplay experiences that go beyond any handheld or mobile device on the market. We have more than 100 games currently in development globally that span many different genres, including Sound Shapes, Resistance: Burning Skies, Uncharted Golden Abyss, Capcom’s Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3, Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed, EA Sports’ FIFA, Activision’s Call of Duty, and numerous others that you’ll hear about in the months ahead.

I’ve had the chance to spend some time with several of these titles and I think you’ll be blown away by how each takes advantage of the technology packed into PS Vita to deliver amazing gaming experiences. With its vibrant 5-inch OLED screen, dual analog sticks, dual cameras, and front and rear touch panel, PS Vita will deliver rich, immersive games with stunning graphics, which simply can’t be found anywhere else. Now you’ll be able to play shooters and action titles on-the-go with controls that are familiar, and you won’t have to block out the gorgeous screen to interact with the games.

In addition to the deep portfolio of games, you’ll also have access to native social applications – near and Party – that help you connect with your friends and fellow PS Vita owners. We also recently announced that PS Vita will have your favorite social networking applications like Facebook, foursquare, Skype, and Twitter, so you can share and connect with friends. With PS Vita, you can enjoy the best handheld gaming experience available and stay connected to the people and interests you care about.

It’s never been a better time to be a part of PlayStation Nation and I can’t wait for you to experience this revolutionary handheld system. Stay tuned for more exciting updates as we near the February 22, 2012 launch!

  • can’t wait for the slim version in 2 years

  • @MadMeat001
Not if you don’t shell out for a memory card.

    @DMcgee627
Where the heck were you shopping? They didn’t cost anywhere near that much at the time. And they sure as heck don’t cost anything now seeing how Sonys included 2 gb card with PSPs for years now, and the 3DS even comes with out.

    @PrimeroIncognito
    No.

  • Oh and to add to everyone else as well Where is the store update?!?!?

  • @PrimeroIncognito So because someone says some constructive criticism, that automatically makes them a 360 fanboy?

  • Let’s see…9’o’clock…still no store update…No? No plans to update the store today? I see…

  • UPDATE THE STORE NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOWWWWWWWWWWW OR GO BACK TO WEDNESDAYS!!!!! my god!!! whats the hold up!!!

  • CANT WAIT FOR THIS! But i thought the date was some where around December 27th?

  • Happy about it but.. why didn’t u release it @ the same time of jp release date?

    Thats not fair ~

  • lovely new TOS, could have been longer though. so, let me get this straight…no built in memory and no memory stick included? that, and there will be new proprietary memory cards eh? my Pro Duos will not fit in there, without some generica adapter. way to milk your dedicated fans. I’ll wait til yall come to your senses and give us what we want. I suggest that all of you “day 1” buyers wake up. The other company dropped the price on their new handheld rather quickly. don’t buy into the greed of this.

  • Good news. I’m only getting the wifi model, too much money I bet for the 3G service too. And now finally, a new Hot shot golf game!!!!!!!!!! Yes I’ve been waiting for a new hot shots golf game for the ps3, but Sony has ignored our feelings and not even an update for ps move and trophies for hot shots golf out of bounds. Damn you Sony. But at least you made up for it, by giving us a hot shots golf game at launch. Ok I’m done >€£%#ing now.

  • I’m glad I bought a PSN card today for the GT5 DLC… oh wait.. well I can always pick up something else.. oh wait.. yeah.. seriously, just officially move the store update to Wednesday morning. Seriously. This is a joke!!!!!!!!!!! >_<

  • Oh boy I cant wait for the “slim” model to come out a few months later or maybe a price cut first. Will the vita actually be able to display facebook unlike the ps3 which freezes everytime I try to access it?

  • First of all, guys please stop responding to Megamixer. He’s been on here for about the past year commenting on every PS Store Update. He trashes Sony, but in a subtle way. We have all discovered the best coarse of action is to ignore him. Once it was figured out that he was so butthurt because he relied on his Mommy and Daddy buying his games instead of using his own money..it made sense why he complained about stuff costing too much.

Second…LOL @ People commenting and asking about the PS Store Update. Get a grip people, the PS2 Style Graphics FPS Left 4 Dead ripoff known as Payday will be here soon.

Tuesday : Complain that the store hasn’t updated and they want to get their game
Wednesday: Complain they paid 19.99 for a horrible game
Sunday: Complain isn’t being released according to the Drop
    Tuesday: Repeat all over again

  • Playstation Store is currently updating. Downloading the Payday demo right now, just ‘search’ for whatever you want to download. It’s probably already on the store, just not listed on the front page.

  • i just pre order the call of duty elltie and infamouse blood i didnt get the game yet i just got 2 themes when do i get the games

  • @CynicalNerd I’m so edgy for saying someone lives in their parents basement, then complaining on the internet about people complaining on the internet. That will show those troll who’s the boss.

  • ‘Currently Updating’? It’s freaking past 9 pm on the East Coast, it should have been done updating about three hours ago. The only thing that’s up is Payday, and my internet will not allow me to play multiplayer titles, so that’s not happening for me.

  • @CynicalNerd
You may well be right that Payday is rubbish, but as nobody’s played it yet it’s probably best to reserve judgement. Sure the graphics look a bit basic (certainly compared with the recent Crysis downloadable, at any rate) but graphics aren’t the be-all and end-all of what defines a good game.
Aside from that, I agree with your post. Constant whining about the store (It’s late! Terrible update! Why is Super Panty Fighter Turbo X $14.99? Bawww!) gets really tiresome. I think Grace must be a total saint. If I were her, I’d just let loose on here!

  • Sooooo…..any chance of seeing the store update before midnight. Delayed DLC for GT5 was a bad start to the day, but no store update ? Seriously – hire someone that can do the job, and give us a proper update – every tuesday – at a set time.

  • Heeeeeelllllsssss yes :D Thanks :) It’s sooner than I expected.

  • Just did a spittake irl. Great!

  • I won’t buy it unless you use a carrier other than AT&T.

I won’t buy the Wi-Fi only model because I already have an iPod Touch that fills that void for me.

Details on non-gaming features (camera, web browser, full app list, etc.)?

I’m not that desperate to play my Playstation titles on the road, so I think I will stick with iPods & iPhones for now until the Vita becomes more competitive in the handheld market.

  • awesome, now i would like to play payday, show us some love and updte the store, please!!!

  • @DMcgee627
Primero didn’t mention 360… guilty conscious much? lol. I certainly don’t have that console, nor will I ever short of someone gifting/donating one to me (which I’ll turn right around and sell).

I am however the proud owner of a PS3 whose blu-ray drive died within three months of purchase. Got YLOD nearly two years later. And got YLOD again 16~ months after that. All the while losing numerous PS1, PS2, PSP, & PS3 game saves along the way (bacon you copy prohibted saves). Oh and each time they send you back a PS3 with a different serial number, meaning the system backup you’ve made? Utterly useless. How fun it is spending days re-downloading games, patches, and re-doing game installs. Reorganizing hundreds of photos, dozens of soundtracks, and countless videos is also quite a joy (not).

  • YEA!! WAY early than i thought i was thinking march. Good job Sony :)

  • Great news, two questions:

    1) Will it have an A/V output so that i can connect it too my TV? Maybe mini-HDMI.

    2) Will I be able to use a Dualshock 3 controller via Bluetooth with the Vita?

  • @megamixer I have all 3 main systems, a DSi and PSPgo and a PC.
I think people should enjoy games, no matter what system they’re on.

  • LOL just realized same day as Killzone 3 came out lol nice. Megamixer I love your post :)

  • test

  • Well my last 3 posts didn’t show up, so I’ll try this again…

DMcgee627: When did I ever say they were 360 fanboys? There is no constructive criticism in their posts, just cynicism.

And I’ll ask megamixer his own question… where were YOU shopping? I never paid $40 for a PS2 memory card…

  • ?

  • Do have this on pre-order but will probably cancel it as I’m uninterested in paying 300 or even 250 dollars for this then another +-100 to get a 16GB memory card (anything below that is crap). The cost for your special cards is just way too much to make getting this worth it. And note that the box pictured does say “Memory required (not included)”.

  • Can’t wait for this baby, my ps3 graphics but in the palms of my hands, and to be honest im not a big handheld kinda guy but im pretty excited :D

  • Only my “test” and “?” posts showed up… where’s the rest?

  • I really like how the release date went from Dec. 31st to Feb. 22nd..sarcasm..Still pwning it day one. Yes i said “pwning” :)

  • My ONLY problem w/the Vita/Sony is that they chose a p.o.s. carrier like AT&T…derps

  • @Deathspear666 December 31st is usually just a placeholder date for online retailors

  • @CynicalNerd
I hadn’t posted on this blog for roughly 3 months, ever since my PS3 did. Nice to know that even after a quarter of a year has passed, my legacy (get it? because I used to post begging for PS Legacy games??) lives on! :D

    @PrimeroIncognito
The blog is eating our posts! The store update cometh!

  • AGREED……..MAKE THE MEMORY CARD COME WITH IT EVEN IF THE FACTORY ONE IS SMALL ITS BETTER THEN EXTRA $$$$$$ especially on realease!

  • My last 4 posts didn’t show up, so I’ll try this again…

megamixer, I ask you your own question: Where were you shopping? I never paid $40 for an 8MB PS2 memory card…

  • Heil my Führer Jack Tretton

  • A little over a week after my birthday and day one for sure.

The Vita looks like a solid product that has had a lot of thought put into making it a great experience.

  • I don’t even believ MEGAMIXER has a PS3! His Avatar never EVER Changed! Lmaoooo

  • keniken said: Seriously – hire someone that can do the job, and give us a proper update – every tuesday – at a set time.

I second that! This is absurdly unprofessional to have the store update STILL not up at this time!
Microsoft must be laughing right now at this.
They might be a bad company (from their policies), but they know reliability and a set time for updates is important to customers.

  • @Budapesti – Watch any of the videos of the game on youtube, mainly the respectable reviews. It looks dated and the gameplay is ick. All these people that pre-ordered it are in for a rude awakening…and to me its funny that they are whining about not being able to get it yet.

Glad to see I am not the only one who is annoyed by the constant whining on here.

  • @PrimeroIncognito
I got my first PS2 memory card in the summer of 2001 when I purchased my system. The card cost $34.99 plus tax. I’d dig up the receipt and snap a photo of it as proof for you but a.) my post would be in moderation hell for posting a link, and b.) the 3DS camera is my only camera, and its awful. Also, I don’t want to exit the game I’m currently playing on it to do so (a DS game, and so all is right with the world). If I got it for $35 8~9 months from launch the $40 price seems spot on to me.

    @polo155
What do avatars have to do with anything?

  • @174
I’ve now paid $280 for refurbs direct from Sony. I’ve spent nearly $1000 on PSN content alone, never mind the 29 physical PS3 games I own. I now have to “fight” with them to allow me to re-download purchased video store content because of their 1 re-download rule, which I’d used back on PS3 refurb #1! Did I mention how my debit card which was attached to my PSN account mysteriously got hit with fraudlent charges during the time of the PSN hack?

If anyone has a right to hate Sony, don’t you think it would be me? But no. I don’t hate. I keep coming back for more. I’m just not blindly in love with them like the countless amount of shills we see on this here blog. :D If something is great I’ll shout praise to the heavens in its name. If something is dud or looks to be one, and could have mistakes corrected before its to late I’ll call anyone out.

And as a big fan of digital distribution, to me a dud is exactly what the Vita is looking to be. They can’t even include a 1 gb card? That is utter rubbish when even the 3DS comes with a 2 gb card. Vita may as well not have a digital storefront (just as the 3DS did not for the first several months of its life, smh) as it will do even worse than the PSP one. :|

  • @DMcgee627…There is a BIG difference between Dec 31st and Feb 22nd online or not…

  • OH SWEET! It comes out the day before my birthday! Can’t wait till it comes out b(^_^b)

  • Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee, Cannot wait it feels like an eternity now only Four more months. :-D
