Beta Feedback: How You Helped Shape Battlefield 3’s Multiplayer

Battlefield 3 for PS3

On behalf of the entire team at DICE, I wanted to say thanks to everyone who played and participated in our Battlefield 3 Open Beta. The information that we’ve gathered from your play time is invaluable. It will help to make Battlefield 3 even better!

But it’s not all network load balancing and matchmaking algorithms; When it comes to data, the real star is you! Just look at these killer numbers we pulled down from all of you PS3 players:

Battlefield 3 Beta Stats

Crazy numbers and we couldn’t have done it without you! Just a few more days now before the game launches on the 25th, and as you may know already, PS3 players will get access to the expansion pack Back to Karkand one week early.

But before I leave you, here is a short selection of just some of the hundreds of changes and additions we are making to the game before launch, as a direct result of your feedback in the Open Beta:

Improved Squad Functionality

There will be improved squad functionality in the retail game (including but not limited to): the ability to create squads prior to launching into a game, sticking with your squad when joining a game and continuing together through future games (if team balance on the server allows it), inviting friends to a squad, and changing squads once in game.

More Accessible Settings Menu

The ability to modify your settings via the deploy screen has been added into the retail game.

Improved Kill Cam

In the Open Beta, the Kill Cam would sometimes behave erratically. This has been fixed for the launch of the retail game.

Netcode Optimization

The netcode is one of the many things that we tested as part of the Open Beta and it was not necessarily reflective of the final retail game. The DICE team appreciates, and has heard, the feedback you’ve provided and is further optimizing online play.

  • Be getting this on WED can’t wait.

  • can we get 8 man parties? 4 isnt enough

  • Can’t wait! Looking forward to it! Great job DICE/EA!

  • @ #1: Wednesday?! You’ll miss out on 24 hours of play time!

    @ #2: I heard the squads will be 6-man teams… but I can’t confirm that.

  • so i noticed they didnt say how many bullets hit the target. Perhaps thats because the ratio between fired and hit was not so great

  • what about Squad chat it wasnt working in the beta.

  • So I heard that you only let people rate BF3 who like the game series or beta? I guess you must be desperate for some good reviews?

  • Cheers to DICE on the upcoming release. I can’t wait to see what you guys have done with her. I have every confidence that this will be an awesome and unprecedented gaming experience, and can’t tell you how much I’ve been looking forward to it. But, I have to say that you guys really shot yourselves in the foot with how the beta was presented to the gaming community. A lot of us understood the difference between beta and demo, but it is my opinion that collectively, most don’t. Unfortunately, those who don’t usually have the loudest voices… Regardless, as one who is in your corner, I wish you all the best in summarily kicking some MW3 posterior….Happy Hunting!

  • day 1

  • Can’t wait. Only 5 more days.

  • It was a beta, not a demo as most people thought. It’s good to hear lots of stuff has been fixed, especially the settings menu on the PC version which was a pain in the ass to have change controls and graphical settings while in a live game.

  • Can’t wait!!!

  • Awesome news! The only part that concerned me though is this:

    “Improved Squad Functionality

I do hope it’s not like BF 1943, where my one friend and I got kicked out of our squad every few games because of the faction balancing. At this point I just hope they nail squads and the matchmaking since the latter is sometimes a little finicky in BC2. Other than these little qualms though, I’m psyched for the 25th!

  • That Beta was kinda garbage. The game is just … easy mode.

I’m no FPS beast and I was cracking off headshots left and right. The aim assist on this game is ramped way up. I’m playing a Battlefield game for the first time, a sloppy shooting noob, and I absolutely wrecked some dudes. Ran out of ammo, pulled my pistol, took out three more. Easy mode.

MAG had it right, too, on health recovery. Passive regeneration isn’t PLAYING the game; it’s hiding like a wussy to do NOTHING while you recover. What did MAG do right here? You carry health recovery equipment and you have to actively USE it. You have to PLAY the game to recover your health.

The FPS genre is in serious trouble when every other game out there wants to hold your hand and heal you up for you if you dip into a safe place and don’t actually PLAY the game for a few moments.

  • what is the largest online mode for PS3? 12 v 12? if so, thats lame.

  • I know, I alone shot over 1 Billion rounds lol.

  • Add a Split-screen for Co-op and Multiplayer in your next patch update please DICE

  • I played it 1 time and saw how buggy it was and deleted it. I bet final build will be better. Will be picking this up but probably after launch because we all know how Games get patched now a days.

  • Will be camping out at Best Buy for at least a good hour waiting on this release.Good job with the tweaks you’ve done to the game. Now let me go I must enjoy Batman and Payday a little while before this drops

  • Very nice, very nice. I’ll be picking this up on day 1. Nice to know that the netcode was a priority with optimization. The other Battlefields suffered from terrible server issues with 1.5Mbps bandwidth.

  • I just want to join and stay with my squad mates and not have to listen to other teammates.

Would be great if the server auto balanced the Lonewolfs if the sides get completely unbalanced.

  • Damn Sweden doesnt get it until 2 days after the US, but damn im gonna pewpew when i get it!!! RAWR!

  • Even though I’ll be getting this on the PC I just want to say well done on the beta. It played so well for me and I had a blast. My only real complaint was that sometimes there was too much going on in screen but that’s just a sign of the graphical times I guess. Will it be as good as the BF2 I played on my PC years ago? Only time will tell.

Either way I look forward to poppin’ some headshots on Oct 25th!

  • @ Hooligantuan You must have got in some games with some terrible enemy players. This “easy mode” can happen in any multiplayer game where the other team is not playing how they should. It was pretty easy to pick the COD players out of the crowd when playing the beta. Even playing MAG some games were done within minutes of starting. Also, take note where MAG is now, is was fun but not really all that great. The health system they had right, but you have to remember the business side, catering to the more casual players means more profit.

@ R_Navarro Impossible, the system can’t handle it. That was a sacrifice that had to be made in order for us to get nice graphics and destruction 2.0.

  • Server browser and ping would be nice to find lag free games. This was my biggest issue with the beta. Bullet sponges and me going from 100% to zero health.

  • Well my guess is more then what you stated was fixed, all the glitches going underground ect. Might pick the game up but theres just so many games i want this year and not enough money to support it!! My wallet hates me!!

  • I hope that mess of a system you guys call party/squad is fixed, why on earth would I make a squad with my friends and join a game to find that we’re all on different teams? lmao, what? Also, in the beta, the chat system was a mess, not being able to hear half the people that actually had a headset on. Besides that though, I greatly enjoyed the beta!

  • Midnight Release!!!

  • Awesome game. I have played every BF game except 2142. Best MP FPS series ever.

Just hoping I have the option to mute people (since some play music, eat crunchy chips, babies crying)
Also what about the knife kills? are they stelth only like the demo or can i actually knife someone in real time?

So glad we (PS3 Owners) get some DLC early.

  • Also will we get the High texture pack I have been hearing about?

  • Thank you so much DICE, you guys are the best! Can’t wait to get my copy Oct 25th! Just a few days left now!

  • Already got it pre-order. Be outside of Bestbuy on the first day to get my hands on it. YEAH BF3

  • What about the very poor graphics of the BETA. Are they going to fix that as well to make it look closer to the PC version?

  • the beta was amaizing but i just didnt like playing with a bounch of people that had hacked systems. I quit playing it after the third day because the hackers were so bad. there was aim-bots and walking through walls. If this is how the full game is going to be all unprotected and stuff i wont buy it.

  • Keep up the great work Dice!!!! I will be playing your games until the end of my days…

  • The beta was ok but cant wait for the real thing!!!!!!!!!

  • I had a blast playing the beta but the full game is gonna be so much FUN. As for the list of improvements…squad functonality is the most important on that list and getting it right from day one is extremely important. Being unable to play with friends was the worst issue the beta had in my opinion.

When the game launches, I really want to play with my friends as we are all huge Battlefield fans. DICE is one of the devs out there that I have tons of respect for and I am sure they will not disappoint. Can’t wait to get my hands on Battlefield 3…see you guys on the battlefield.

  • “continuing together through future games (if team balance on the server allows it)” doesn’t sound so good. I wouldn’t like my squad to split because there was one more person on the other team. In BC2 you could enter a game with 2-3 more persons and it worked. Someone is bound to enter the game.

  • To whomever was talking about how deeply troubled the FPS genre is because of hand-holding with health regeneration, you’re delusional. First off, if one is fighting a skilled player that player will have no problem taking you out if all you’re doing is camping one spot and relying on health regeneration. You do realize the player has to be out of combat to even begin this process, right? Furthermore, health regeneration is very tedious and is in no one a supplement for a combat medic who knows how to support his team well.

In addition to that, if you know anything about the Battlefield series then you know that “hardcore” mode is a staple of these games. If you want no chevrons, no health recovery aside form med packs, ammo count and no hand-holding whatsoever then play this mode.

If you don’t take all that I’ve said into consideration then you’re just complaining for the sake of it, which is not something I’m accustomed to pandering to. Nor is any self-respecting human being–including the developers of this game–going to tolerate. So please leave if that’s the sort of inane negativity that you’re going to bring to the discussion.

  • @39

“If you don’t take all that I’ve said into consideration then you’re just complaining for the sake of it, which is not something I’m accustomed to pandering to.”

Time to step off your soap box, you sound like a self righteous child with an overdeveloped sense of worth. There is nothing that Hooligantuan said that was incorrect including his statement about the demo being “garbage”. The game is nothing more then a terrible combination of everything that was wrong with Medal of Honor and BF:BC2 all rolled into one package with a neat little bow and labeled new.

And i’m pretty sure that DICE/EA reps can speak for themselves in this post and don’t need your misplaced altruism defending them. They sure had no problem strong arming reviewers into positive reviews by selectively sending out test copies.

  • im so excited i cant believe that in a few days this game is gonna be released

  • hopefully they fix the sniping cuz it suck in the beta I shot this guy 4 times and he never die and than when I’m reloading he kills me WTF

  • H-A-T-E-R-Z-Z-Z

  • THIS GAME SUCKS, I WON’T BUY IT

  • THIS GAME WAY OVERRATED.
    12 V 12 IS A JOKE
MAG IS WAY BETTER THAT THIS CRAP
    BTW THE BETA SUCKED

  • I tried mag, promptly deleted it from my ps3. Horrible game. For the dude complaining about the health regeneration on easy mode, ugh ever hear of hard core mode? Try it, see how long you last then.

  • 12 vs 12 seriously IS a joke. At this console generation, it’s not hard for a game to trim down its presentation to put more guys in a battle while still maintaining a respectable presentation.

I’ve already mentioned MAG, so forgive me for pulling a fanboy card here, but for all its problems (all of which were post-release developer bungles) it had the right idea – put MORE dudes in the fight. Its smallest game mode is 32 vs 32 and THAT is a HUGE battle. Nevermind its 256 player mode, 32 vs 32 should be a STANDARD OFFERING at this console generation. MAG crammed all those dudes into a fight and it still looks great. (I mean, its foliage could use some work, but that’s splitting hairs.)

Battlefield 3 pulling a measly 12 vs 12 is absolutely pitiful. Sure, for some game modes and maps, that’s horrible, but for its biggest mode? Really? Your graphics and modeling don’t look nearly good enough to call it a memory issue.

I am telling you, the company that does MAG’s formula right – large groups and actual BATTLES – will rake in the cash. Zipper almost did it right themselves until they shot themselves in the knees with bad patches and abandoned the ship for SOCOM4 (check the reviews on that gem).

  • It’s cool, MCP-511. Most people that can’t aim well prefer the popcorn games like Call of Duty or the campgrounds of Battlefield and such.

I mean, you eat enough bullets, you get full, right? It’s good to know when you’re full and leave the table. :D

  • all i have to say is the spawn layout of the last bomb sation was laughable…they put a 3 story building on top of an enemy spawn….unreal and the did this to speed up gameplay i wonder why…..COD…..only other problem is with going prone. going prone takes the skill of shooting out of this game …by adding fully prone it makes .. postioning more important then shooting…it gives people with higher ground too much of an advantage….these games are called first person shooters not hide up high in obscure spaces and team spawn or is it???//

  • final thing i know people will think im joking…but i would really look forward to a battfield bad company 2.5 or some kind of usage of their old engine frosbite 2? i know it also had its problem but maybe if they released a newer version of 1943 with frosbite 2 with more dogfighting a story mode….and more in depth multiplayer….please dice i loved your old engines more than this one so my moneys already burning a hole in my pocket
