PS3 System Software Update (v.4.00)

A new system software update (v4.00) will be released this week. In preparation for the launch of PlayStation Vita (PS Vita) in Japan, this update will prepare PlayStation 3 (PS3) to serve as a content management device. It will allow users to copy their digital content such as games, music, photos, and videos between PS Vita and PS3, back up PS Vita game games including save data to your PS3 hard drive, and update the system software for your PS Vita system using the network features of your PS3.

Other changes to take effect with this update include:

  • PlayStation Plus members can now choose to enable or disable each automatic update feature
    • Game patches
    • System software
    • Recommended games and videos
    • Sync trophy information
  • New PlayStation Network settings for filtering friend requests and messages

You can find more details after the firmware goes live here. We look forward to your feedback.

  • Since this update I can’t get my Bluetooth to connect with my PS3. I know my Bluetooth works with the PS3 because it s the PS3 Bluetooth. Any one else having problems like this?

  • Is there any way to get an answer from these people? Twitter….. no answer…… here……. no answer……..

  • Wow… I have just lost all respect for Sony. I’ve had my PS3 since launch and I think this has to be one of the worst updates so far since the update that removed OtherOS (Linux). Really? An annoying health warning every time we turn our system on? Just make it show once then remove it or at least give us an option to remove it, that way it will be our fault and not yours. The PS3 has lost everything that once made it great. Whatever happened to the commercials with the Ladies and Gentleman song by Saliva that showed how crazy the PS3 was? Removing support for PSP games is just messed up too. At least Microsoft supports their customers and listens to them. I will definitely not be buying a Vita just to have support removed for it in a couple years. I will stick to gaming on my iPhone with my $0.99 games. From now on I will be cautious when buying a Sony product because I now have to fear the risk of losing support or features being taken away.

  • Check this out people, this does not look good for Sony Playstation In North America. Sony loses two key executives. VP of Marketing Scott Steinberg & SVP of Publisher Relations Rob Dyer.

    http://www.industrygamers.com/news/playstation-team-loses-two-key-executives/

Maybe they left because they were upset with Firmware Update 4.00 :P

  • The warning is going to be annoying, but I didn’t notice that it took any longer. It’s just there instead of a blank xmb screen at start up.

I’m so excited for the Vita! And for those complaining about how early it is, remember, this is the same update Japan gets and the Vita is out next month in Japan, so they had to implement it now, they were just telling us why.

The only thing that bothers me is the inability to swap PSP games. Let’s hope that’s temporary.
If it’s not, I’ve bought my last PSone classic until Vita! (If it supports them) since there’s no way I’m downloading a 2gb game directly to my PSP!
All my PSP content is still transferable at least.

  • Don’t know if it’s just my imagination but the XMB seems to be loading faster now and running smoother.

  • Since when has video gaming been more about the firmware updates than the actual games? People love to hate. Simple fact. Move on…

  • DO NOT UPDATE IF YOU DO NOT HAVE TO THIS NEW UPDATE IS CRAP!!!! AND EARLIER MY POWER WENT OUT AND I HAD TO WAIT THROUGH “CHECKING AND RESTORING FILE SYSTEM” WITH NO WAY TO EXIT IT AND IT TAKES FOREVER!!!!!!! USELESS GET RID OF THAT ANNOYING AND DON’T WANT IT AND I’M SURE EVERY ONE OF YOUR BILLIONS OF PS3 OWNERS WOULD AGREE ABOUT THIS, I HAVENT TRIED TO PLAY A GAME YET SO I DON’T K NOW ABOUT THE HEALTH WARNINGS YET, BUT I WILL CHECK THAT IN A MOMENT, BUT MY MAIN ISSUE AS IT STANDS NOW IS THE “EXPLETIVE” RESTORE IT DOES ANY TIME MY SYSTEM FREEZES OR MY POWER GOES OUT, WHAT A JOKE SEEMS LIKE EVERY TIME THERE IS A NEW UPDATE THERE IS SOMETHING ELSE WRONG OR JUST PLAIN USELESS WITH IT, SONY SORRY TO SAY THIS AS I AM A LOYAL CUSTOMER I HAVE BOUGHT THE PS3 MOVE, AND THE NEW WIRELESS STEREO HEADSET, AND THE TV AND THE SURROUND SOUND FROM YOU GUYS, BUT THIS TIME YOU TRULY DROPPED THE BALL ON THIS ONE AND I WOULD LOVE TO SEE THIS RESTORE THING CHANGED TO GIVE ME THE OPTION TO CHOOSE TO DO IT OR NOT RATHER THAN HAVE IT FORCED UPON ME EVERY TIME I FREEZE UP OR MY POWER GOES OUT!

  • ALSO WHY NOT GIVE US AN UPDATED BROWSER THAT IS SOMETHING THAT PS3 HAS NEEDED SINCE IT WAS FIRST RELEASED AND WE STILL HAVEN’T SEEN OR HOW ABOUT THIS IF YOU DONT WANT TO UPDATE “YOUR BROWSER” WHY NOT GIVE US DEDICATED APPS FOR FIREFOX OR GOOGLE CHROME SO WE HAVE A CHOICE OF WHICH WEB BROWSER WE WANT TO USE, BECAUSE FRANKLY PS3 BROWSER IS A SAD SORRY EXCUSE FOR A WEB BROWSER IN THIS DAY AND AGE.

  • Dude, Slim down the in-Game XMB! Only show items we can select during a game and disable the fricken animation to make it load faster. Seriously, What’s the point of a “Video” Category when you can’t do anything with it anyway?

  • here is another thing i would like to see how about if we could purchase 50 new friend slots from the ps store for around 5$ so that we don’t have to delete friends to add new ones this is getting annoying as well and i would gladly pay 5$ to have 50 more friend slots available to me so i can add new people without deleting other friends

  • A health warning at each boot-up? ARE YOU FREAKING KIDDING ME? At least give us a way to disable this. This warning should be in the operating manual of the console, we’re not kid, what’s the deal to force this message upon everyone?

Are you on drugs? Are you wondering what to implement?

Here’s a great idea: Why not implementing a login windows to use the PS3 account, so that your girlfriend/kid don’t mess up with your saves, AND, in case your console get stolen, nobody has access to your PSN accoun if you’ve the PSN set to auto sign-in.

Seriously, these firmware updates are lame, one after the other.

  • Oh, and here’s another thing, gives us an option to stop prompting the BD-Live crap each time you put a blu-ray movie in. We only have the option to always allow or to ask. Why not always deny? Why would I want to go on the internet ee exclusive crappy content. Why would I want holywood to know what movie i am watching.

    never heard of privacy settings?

  • wth happened for the PSP to PS3 support??? :O

  • Well, reading these posts got my panties in a bunch for no reason!

    Myths –

Remote play with PSP is broken…

You can’t transfer PSone, Mini, or other content to your PSP

    Facts –

Remote Play works just fine (I registered my PSP a second time, works great for me)

PSone games have to be redownloaded, and when you install them on the PS3 it doesn’t get rid of the install file. It installs the PSone game and then you have both an installed (non-copyable) game, and an install file of the game (which is copyable). The minis are now the same way.

Minis are the same as PSone, you can transfer to PSP, if you have the install file…not the game files.
When you download it will give you the installed game (not copyable) and the install file left over (copyable).

So there is no reason to keep ranting on here that you can’t do Remote Play or transfer to the PSP.

Only downside is there is no “install file” folder, so if your like me you will have 60+ icons between the game disc icon and your first folder or installed game.

  • Only other issue I’m having is that my quick PS+ icon shows up until I sign into the PSN on my PS3 then it disappears, but oh well, I can’t win them all.

Seems to be a fine update to me. Nothing to drastic or out of the normal routine.
It will be great for the Vita I will be getting (I’m a Sony fanboy now).

I’m sure with 4.01 all the minor stuff will be fixed. Give it a week or two…maybe sooner.

  • Wow, you think with all the complants, people were expecting the next coming! its a fine update esp. for those picking up the vita early on. And idk what some people are saying its taking forever to download the update, must be personal issues. Only took me about 6-9minutes to DL and install.

  • Hello sony. this is my first post on the blog since you guys wont allow us to sing in on here and leave a comment through the PS3’s internet browser. Okay so i was wondering about the new PS3 update version 4.0. What i was wondering is if were still able to Japanese Disc based/ Downloaded games. Because i know that the system was Bluray game Region-lock free. but i just downloaded a demo or what ever it was from the Japanese PSN and it sayed something about it being region locked so i couldn’t play it. So is the PS3 still Region-Lock free or did you guys take another great feature away from your fans? Please respond to me, or even you guys from the Blog. Can someone tell me if the PS3 is still region lock free.

  • In-games music for the next update Yeah?

  • Anyone having issues after updating.. I cant transfer my psp games from the ps3 to my pspgo it says my ps3 isnt recongnized I need to log in to the account I purchaced them on and tru again… I am on my only account I dled these onto the ps3 so I could acess them whenever I wanted to put a new one on my psp god I hope I donr have to redownload it all

  • I to had this power serge. This is what happened!
I got 3 messages at the same time, I doubt this was the cause. I pushed the PS button in game SR:TT and the screen went black for 5 minutes, Occasional flicker of dark grey possibly the system failing and the TV wondering what the data it was receiving means. ALL lights turned off. ALL! I had to wait about 1 1/2 Minuit until I could turn it on. Green light lit up and the blue light flashed. Went dead again. I tried again and the same thing happened. Then it went OUT again. NO LIGHTS WERE ON! NOT EVEN THE RED ONE! So i hit eject. It gave me my game and shut off again. I unplugged it in ran safe mode. Plugged it back in and held the Power button. It did not let me do safe mode as on the third beep, It restored file system. No telling what this Update did to the system.

  • PS I have a 160GB CECH-2501A which is still a fairly new system and this is the second time my OS has failed me.

  • Before this update my PS3 was the center of my Sony gaming experience, it was easy and intuitive. I bought psone and PSP games, installed them and copied them over. Now I have to jump through hoops, updates are suppose to make the users experimce

  • Before this update my PS3 was the center of my Sony gaming experience, it was easy and intuitive. I bought psone and PSP games, installed them and copied them over to my PSP. Now I have to jump through hoops, updates are suppose to make the users experience more enjoyable and easy. Sony will never change, I might have to pass on them for the next system cycle.

  • Man some of you guys know how to troll. It’s pretty much mandatory to update if you want to play online.

Grow up and deal with the update, seriously.

  • I was looking for the option to turn off the god awful health warning. Absolutely ridiculous! I really wish Sony would refine the backup utility for save files, so I don’t have to back them up one by one. I seriously don’t know how that has not been implemented, but the health warning has.

All in all I’m happy with the system for it’s simple design. The only other gripe is the useless top menu button. If I wanted to watch 10 minutes of trailers I would go to the movies.

  • @460 You’re right! Where are the new plus options? Am I missing something? Under system settings, it still only has the single auto update option for everything with the only options being on/off. The plus icon is under the account section, but when I select it, it asks me to log in and then, when I do, takes me back to the xmb and the icon disappears.

Are the new additional plus features not working on top of the mysterious loss of ps3 -> psp functionality?

  • ugh with all the input you have collected from people for future updates it seems these have all fallen on deaf ears come on sony give us a update that we can all actually use!

  • So is the ps3 acting as a content hub for vita does that mean no media go for vita. I really like media go and use it all the time with my psp

  • PS3 Firmware 4.10 – PS+ users will be able to toggle the health screen off.

  • I request to have a Settings on Notifications so anyone can place it wherever they want to display and make it animated like the X360 has.

  • I called Geek Squad about problems I’m having not being abble to transfer my PS Minis and PSone games to PSP from the PS3. They didn’t know what I was talking about and They ask me what a Vita was(:

  • Thanks for ruining my PSPgo setup. I had to delete over a hundred PSP games off my system because they no longer work. Then I download some of them again, as stated in your error message, and every one of them error upon trying to install them on my PSPgo. The PS3 is now useless for the PSPgo! And you want me to buy a Vita?!?!?

Did the babies from the e Trade commercials get hired to start working on firmware updates?

  • lame. is expecting major features but dissapointing as usual psplus gets some minor updates and all for the vita aka lame

  • the only thing more useless than this PS blog and PS twitter to finding answer is customer service

  • For those of you “bashing” others for expecting a “major” update, I don’t think you understand how software versions work. Typically, a whole number jump signifies a significant update, and anything else is typically considered minor. That’s why people are all upset. I don’t blame them. When I saw the update on the Blog that read “4.00” I immediately got excited, only to be disappointed. Granted, it is a major update for those in Japan who will have Vitas. It is essentially allowing you to manage and store your Vita software on your PS3 without having to get an absurdly large memory card for it (similar to how the PC software works) so I can understand where the 4.00 came from. However, this just doesn’t offer anything real for pure PS3 owners, like myself.

  • I guess I will see this weekend how the update is, but by the sound of it, it doesn’t sound all that great. I can understand the Vita updates since the Vita is close to launch in Japan. This health screen at start up is pretty ridiculous. So essentially you have to view the same health warnings twice before you get in game? That’s pretty ridiculous. Unless there are some “not released to the public” instances of people getting seizures or something before using the XMB, IDK. Or if it’s the Move health screen, maybe it’s for navigating the XMB with the Move, which would be an interesting update.

  • As for XMB “updates”. I wouldn’t expect an overhaul, I’d just want it to be optimized for in game usage. It’s sluggish in game and there are many alternatives to the in game version. Like many here have stated, it should only show options that you would use in game. This would optimize it a bit. I don’t need to see my game list when in the in game xmb. I don’t need to see my videos, video services, pictures, etc. in the in game xmb. You should only really need to quit teh game and access your friends list / messages. Everything else should be reserved to when you aren’t in game. There’s no reason to waste memory on the extra stuff.

  • As for the people having PSP issues, they do need to resolve that. Sure some of you aren’t having problems and have just reinstalled your psOne library, but for those of us who have Plus and have purchased many psOne titles, we don’t want to reinstall 100+ titles just to continue doing what we have been. That’s pretty ridiculous.

Sorry for the quad posting, but they don’t allow walls of text on here.

  • Seriously… Why make things such a hassle for your psp customers? Many of us have dozens of psp and psone games stored on our hard drives that we just transfer over to the psp when we want to play them. Now we have to re-download all of them again?

If you’re going to keep this system, at least give of us the ability to keep the install files IN THEIR OWN FOLDER on our ps3 hard drive.

Also, since you’re basically forcing us to use the Playstation Store as cloud storage for our games, give us a “My Games” area in the store containing anything we’ve purchased so we can choose from our own games easily without having to navigate through all the games we don’t own.

  • I have two more suggestions.

    1. We need a way to delete corrupted files on the :PS3 there should be an option through the system settings to delete corrupted files. If this is already present someone send me a message through PSN but i am sure we don’t have this option.

    2. Is the PS3 not smart enough to know if i am playing single player compared to multiplayer online? Every time i play a game online the next day or so i get a message saying that new save data was uploaded to the cloud storage. Since i wasn’t playing the single player what is the system uploading???? This should be resolved.

  • I wish people would stop moaning about cross game chat/ new xmb’s and other things that make a playstation a playstation. News flash this is not a XBOX…sure the cross game chat is fun at times but when you have a friend or someone u dont even know blasting you with invites to parties, boosting lobbies, and other nonsence it gets old. there is a chat function that can hold 6-8 people ive used it and its fun. Please stop harrasing Sony about what comes in the updates…and stop begging for stuff that wont come. It was announced that xgc wont happen…it may be included in the vita to an extent but thats it. the xmb is great i dont know how many times i’ve wasted time trying to find something on the xbox’s dashboard…its full of advertisments. the playstation is the better machine why try to make it like the xbox which constantly puts out new systems to cover for flaws that it has…be happy you have what you have and it works…had the xbox since february and its messed up…my phat playstation is still goin strong after almost 6 years

  • OMG What is this, I try to download and it keeps failing, i turn my internet off and on and it keeps FAILING. Due to me not me being able to download it, i can’t go online and if i cant go online, then theres no point off a PS3. I keep getting error code 880 something something something. Any help would be fantastic

  • @saab01 the system usually has multiple save files..one for multiplayer and one for single

  • how about just downloading the update to a flashdrive and using that…or has that been wiped out….

  • Ok @483. Cross game Voice chat should be used by people that we know that are co workers, classmates, and other distant friends. It is NOT ment for kids who play Modern Warfare 3 and decide to make a party to cheat.. That is wrong and is not the sole purpose of Cross game Voice Chat. Thank You.. Congrats on you having your ps3 for 6 years.. even though we celebrated the 5th birthday 11-17-11… Good Day

  • @487 still going strong after ALMOST 6 years…and yea Xbox is for kids…cross game chat would be nice but its not possible we should stop beating the horse…its rotting

  • Nothing too extraordinary in this update, but am really unhappy with what they’ve done to the game save copying process.

Whereas before, you only had to confirm once to overwrite a save, you now get two confirmation screens. The first one tells you a save with the same name already exists. Then, when you confirm that you want to overwrite, you get *another* screen telling you that overwrting the save will mean the old save will be lost, and you have to confirm it again.

Really? Is that what *overwriting* means? I honestly don’t understand who thought this would be a UI improvement. You just turned a one-step process into a two-step process, increasing the time it takes to perform what is already a laborious task (due to how bad the save utility interface is) of backing up saves. What the hell?

  • I did not expect much from the 4.0 update.. but getting this health warning message every time i start my ps3, is a bit to much. It ruin the whole playstation experience… if there have been an option to turn it off, i would not have said much, but there is no option for it!!. STOP BEING A JERK SONY. I DID NOT BUY A PS3 TO BE FORCE FED HEALTH WARNING MESSAGES!!

  • @ silentdragon2k8

The PS3 gameplay of online games saves with the online server so it has nothing to do with the actual single player game save. The PS3 should be capable of knowing if the user is playing single player or online.
