A new system software update (v4.00) will be released this week. In preparation for the launch of PlayStation Vita (PS Vita) in Japan, this update will prepare PlayStation 3 (PS3) to serve as a content management device. It will allow users to copy their digital content such as games, music, photos, and videos between PS Vita and PS3, back up PS Vita game games including save data to your PS3 hard drive, and update the system software for your PS Vita system using the network features of your PS3.
Other changes to take effect with this update include:
- PlayStation Plus members can now choose to enable or disable each automatic update feature
- Game patches
- System software
- Recommended games and videos
- Sync trophy information
- New PlayStation Network settings for filtering friend requests and messages

I cant go online in Midnight Club Los Angeles with firmware 4.00. Anyone have problems going online in games?
Since installing this update my bluray/dvd remote does not work properly. I have to do everything with the regular playstation buttons (X,O,square,triangle) which defeats the purpose of having the controller with all the extra buttons. Has anyone else had this problem since the update?

ok. i love playstation. I’ve always had playstation. But if you don’t step it up a notch with online comunication or game patchs or network connection and being able to have software update people actually want then eventually you guys will go down the drain. i am only saying this because if spend money on things the gamers actually want your sales will actually go up.

OK. So why did i spend £300 on a ps3 again? Awful browser, outdated XMB menue, time is wrong, slow startup for games, slow paced system, no “PS3” sign when you first turn on your ps3, and also when you start a game theres no “PlayStation 3” logo that should come up…PS2 used to have that, but ps3 dont? :S honest the PS3 doesnt even feel like a games console…just a terrible little computer that you can play games on…fix these things whats taking them so long? its almost 2012
Yea, I was thinking of getting a Vita…but right now if feel so bitter that PS3s 4.0 is pretty much a vita update.
Were are new features for the PS3, or updates for the browser. I mean I have to go to my I-pad to even be able to sign in on the PSblog to post this.

I enjoy updates and I dont mind waiting for it to get installed but this cannot be a 4.00 Update no offence sony but this update is crap especially for people who don’t have Playstation +, you guys treat them as if they’re the only ones who bought the system, anyways when I saw update 4.00 I was extremely happy but seriously, Everyone wants a new Updated Browser on the PS3 , i dont really care about the xmb but people complain so I wouldn’t also mind getting an update for xmb, you might aswell have named this update 3.80 or 3.90 but not 4.00 because it was the biggest disappointment for millions of users around the world, especially who expected a new browser. I really enjoy the PS3 and all the exclusives but you guys better have a good excuse for me/us buying your next console because all the updates are pointless and are just to make sure we don’t jailbreak our PS3
, I obviously would want a better security but add some features along with the security patch, I spent thousands of dollars on Playstation/Sony and am expecting better features along with the PLAYSTATION USERS not ONLY PLAYSTATION PLUS USERS, because we also paid for this system along with everyone else, Features are welcomed! We have had the same browser since 2006 and it’s really annoying and freezes on some sites for example when I watch WWE Raw and Smackdown from my PS3 every week, I know it’s not a computer but if you updated your browser I’m guessing that the browser would not freeze, Browser Update is DEFINITELY NEEDED!!!!!!
Seriously, all 4.0 did for ps3 was make the system have more annoying and inconvenient prompts or data management problems…and I HATE your politically correct health prompt as if that stupid advertisement ticker wasn’t enough to shove down our gullets. Obviously the ps3 is SOOOOO dangerous right? What’s a matter? Get sued? Does some one wanna sue over features being taken or no new ones being developed, maybe that would help…
This is super worthless if you do not auto download or plan on getting your new golden child(vita).

Every change here has one thing in common, protecting sonys bottom line.
Wether is letting us download less automatically or protecting them legally or pushing the move to new hard ware. NONE of this would bother me IF we were still getting neat features, but obviously we are not.
Hey, PSN friends/Blog Managers/Technical Troubleshooters.
I downloaded the update on my PS3, yesterday (11/30) evening, and now I cannot log-in to the PSN, via my actual, physical console.
I can still surf the Internet (via the Browser), and I still receive PSN updates on the “What’s New” tab, and across the banner on the top right of my XMB home screen; however, every time I try to log-in, it tells me that my connection to the PSN has timed-out.
Is anyone else having this issue? I have an older, “fat” model PS3, and I – of course would like to continue climbing the ranks in my Uncharted 3: Multiplayer.
It had been operating fine, until the update finished installing. Hell, I was logged-in on my console, right before I performed the install.
Any help/advice is accepted

This update has eroded the last shred of confidence I had in Sony. This was suppose to turn my PS3 into a “content management device” is that right? Then why can I no longer transfer any of my 40+ psone games to my PSP like I was able to before? I now have to keep 2 copies of psone games on my HDD if I want to copy a game over to my PSP. Why are the 80+ games and add ons in my PSP folder useless now? I can’t copy them anymore. They all tell me I need to re-download the file. That’s days worth of content to re download, thanks to this mandatory update. I really can’t wrap my head around this update. It actually made it more difficult to manage my content.
Good now includes the Portuguese language of Brazil as a language system to your PS3’s XMB. To what end-Sony thought the Brazilians.

Ok seriously are we just being ignored now I have been a loyal customer I even own and enjoy my pspgo mainly because I can store my digital psp games on my ps3 & moving them to my go when I want to play. I read wgat this update was supose to do basicly add vita support but why exactly did it remove psp support?
Seriously the drm is getting bad please stop punishing your legal customers, oh and get it out of your heads that you own the games we buy and our purchaces are just licenses to use them. This attitude is the primary reason dor most pirating by the masses.
Hey…. Anyone else having Screen Ratio problems? Before the Update My XMB was fine.. now the sides are cut off. I tried resetting the Display settings to no avail. Looks like about 1/2 of an inch on each side is cut.
Vita is going to be a failure, Sony has learned nothing, with those gross prices for mem cards and no internal memory its way too expensive…….. Sony is going down..fast.

At the moment, they’ve been rendered useless and are just taking up space, but if there’s any hope of a “fix”, I’d rather not have to re-download everything.
What’s up with the system file restore EVERY time the system freezes? Plus XMB freezing when navigating various areas? Can we have 3.71 back, at least it didn’t force a file restore every freeze, which happens in Skyrim frequently? SONY, get Google to compile a version of Chrome for U – DO YOU WANT TO LOAD PLUGIN, come on…. PS Browser freezes your systems as well.. Who do you get to test out your firmware updates, mmmm, ah, in-house programmers.. Should Beta test this on 5 or 10,000 RANDOM users for a week B4 releasing to your user base…. SONY GET WITH IT……..
Thank you so much sony for the new privacy settings. I’ve been waiting for these settings. no more worry about dealing with spam,hate,douche,and just plain annoying messages etc. only friends can send me messages and no one can add me :D.
So all in all, Sony will meet our request once the ps4 comes out in about 2 years??? Then Sony will say ps4 is amazing even though it has features Xbox360 has, and we will be happy! Then, we will get bored of the software and start bitching all over again..

If they have no lives a 2 seconds message isn’t going to slow them down. More than likely the update is just to combat hackers/modders and the vita crap is just thrown in so they don’t seem completely insecure.
@504 I read you post and seemed to have the same problem, but then I changed my BR/DVD Controllers batteries and it works fine. I have the original 60GB PS3 with the integrated PS2 Emotion Chip (CECHA01) upgraded to 250GB, still working sibce I bought it almost 5 years ago, just in case it is a system issue as apparently updates work different on different system versions, because of this reason, I personnaly think that when mentioning hardware problems it would be better if we entered our system version. That way if Sony really reads these blogs, they would have an idea of what system chips are working properly and which aren’t. I have an original CECHA01 60GB PS3, and ever since the 4.0 Update, when I turn on the system via the controllers PS button, the system starts fine, but the controller does not connect. To temporarily fix this I either connect the USB Cable, sometimes twice for it to recognize the controller, or I leave the controllers PS button pressed for about 30 seconds until the controller turn off and upon pressing the PS button again to turn it on, it reconnects properly. Please fix this issue as it takes away from the pleasure of using my PS3. Any Original PS3 users having the same problem?
I think sony sould give us back the option to install a OS on to our systems. Seriously what has happened to the playstation3 it use to be better than the xbox, now besides it just being a bluray player it seems to be getting less atractive to me, they keep removing the things that made it kool and keep adding useless crap at least for the majority of us that aren’t +members.
The only real difference I notice from the last update and 4.00 is they took away almost half of the symbols in the symbol box on the keyboard. Why would they take those away? How about adding cool features like customizable profiles or something NEW. They did the right thing with adding colors to the profiles but havent done anything since
Hey there, I upgraded my 80GB PS3 fattie to the version 4.00 firmware yesterday and now my themes do not work. To clarify, a while ago I bought some dynamic themes from the PlayStation Network Shop, including the “Deus Ex: Human Revolution” dynamic theme and the animated “Source Code” theme. Niether work anymore. Now, I understand whay Sony disabled home-made themes. I don’t agree with that either, but I understand they run their business for profit. Fine. But what I cannot tolerate is when I pay money for things with the assumption that I can, you know, ACTUALLY CONTINUE TO USE THEM, and they get stolen from me. That’s a cold move Sony, and I feel like I got robbed. Please fix this. Either that, or refund my money for all the dynamic themes I bought on my account on PSN. And yes, I know that things could be worse (at least my system wasn’t bricked after the update like some were) but you owe it to the people who purchase things from your store. If not, perhaps I and the many other gamers could put together a class-action suit. Ball’s in your court.
Whats a Vita? Who cares? Why the hell should my PS3 be updated for a Vita? Sony do some good and stop patching. Do a real update.

Just for an experiment, I tried to log-in to my PlayStation Home – something I haven’t done, in nearly a year. I clicked the icon, and it downloaded 3/3 updates for Home, version 1.55 – I believe. It performed the download and install, like a champ…
Then it prompted me to log-in. I filled out my information, and I was again told that my “connection to the PlayStation Network has timed out.”
I still receive this message, every time I try to log-in. This even happens on my alternate ID, and a buddy’s ID, who tried to log-in using my console.
Is anyone else unable to log-in, via their console?
fix the controller sync. this is stupid that this is even an issue. how can you mess up something like this in an update? you need to fire whoever released this without testing it. stupid, stupid update. such a hassle to have to plug in my controller EVERY TIME i start my playstation. im about done with you, sony, ill be getting myself an xbox for christmas.

I think this could have w8d i mean im sure you will have an update that matters to the rest of the community not just the 5% who are gonna run out and buy Vita day 1 . You do have 2 more months. The plus stuff is nice but i would rather see larger updates or maybe im annoyed cuz i stayed up to download a game went to play and got your fimware is out of date at least give us an option to postpone for 24 hrs something anything other than we are the gate keeper do our bidding or get out. I do understand the need to keep security up to date but another 24 hours isnt much to ask for some people get outta work at midnight and have limited time to play dont wanna be forced to update and lose the precious game time.Why not have the option to update on power off kind of like a (shutters) windows PC . Your silly update for the PSVita, which isn’t even out yet, broke my Deus Ex: Human Revolution dynamic theme. This item is something you can PURCHASE in the PSN store. It no longer works thanks to some of the new “security” measures you put in place relating to dynamic themes. You guys should have really made sure all the products you are selling in your own store work before you steamroll an update out.
I am now completely unable to use a product I paid for, a product that you also are still selling on PSN. I advise you to fix this, or refund everyone that bought this theme and take it down from your store. As is, it will not work with this update.
I was a happy ps3 owner and a happy xbox 360 owner…for about 2 months my ps3 has been collecting dust..I thought I would expect more from sony with these updates….Come December 6th Xbox 360 gets a HUUUUGE Update with tons of entertainment being added on like live T.V. HBO GO and like 30 some more partners jumping on NOW THAT IS A UPDATE GUYS, Sony take notes cuz microsoft comes out with solid updates A LOT
