PS3 System Software Update (v.4.00)

A new system software update (v4.00) will be released this week. In preparation for the launch of PlayStation Vita (PS Vita) in Japan, this update will prepare PlayStation 3 (PS3) to serve as a content management device. It will allow users to copy their digital content such as games, music, photos, and videos between PS Vita and PS3, back up PS Vita game games including save data to your PS3 hard drive, and update the system software for your PS Vita system using the network features of your PS3.

Other changes to take effect with this update include:

  • PlayStation Plus members can now choose to enable or disable each automatic update feature
    • Game patches
    • System software
    • Recommended games and videos
    • Sync trophy information
  • New PlayStation Network settings for filtering friend requests and messages

You can find more details after the firmware goes live here. We look forward to your feedback.

  • tell us wat we want for the ps4/ps3

  • Seems like with the Vita coming out, they have forgotten about keeping the PS3 fresh.

  • Thanks for the firmware update, sony. The PS3 system is now version 4. It’s a very nice update, but only tiny bit problem is unable to install PSP content after downloading it on PS3 system which is kinda sucks. Thought maybe sony can resolve the problem as whenever a new firmware comes out in the future would be great.

  • Update did nothing!

  • Okay, I admit it… I’m new to the PS3 scene having just acquired one of the original, reverse-able units. Unfortunately this came without controllers or a remote – and of course, no instructions. So, I’ve got it connected but need help getting the software updates, how to load them, and answers to other questions I’m sure will arise… One in particular is: do I need to get a plug-in controller to get started? I purchased a wireless remote and controller, but find they need the newer software before they’ll work… Is there a work-around without having to purchase a wired controller? Thanks!

  • is this a blog? 555 comments and not a single reply from the poster. Granted this is probably not really “Posted by Eric Lempel // VP, Sony Network Entertainment”, but is anybody at Sony bothering to read this? I find it disturbing that they can make such drastic changes to the PSP transfer functions without notifying us of the required new process.

  • It’s been almost a week now and still not a word from Sony. I’m assuming they just don’t care at this point and this was planned as part of the update all along.

  • Please tell me there is going to be a 4.01 update soon. Since the update, my system has been having slowdowns random freezing and restarts and no official word from sony makes this frustrating.

I’ve even read that the people with the same problems eventually had their consoles brick on them. Which I don’t want to happen since my PS3 is a old 60 gig model that plays PS2 games.

  • @555 u need to plug-in ur wireless controller at least once to be able to use it
    Reason?
1 – So PS3 register it on its memory, to dun interfere on other PS3
    2 – Battery

  • As DavidShrader pointed out not one reply from Erec Lempel or anyone else inside SCEA well not officially. We still got the D-bag comments by the trolls which are universally ignored by gamers. I’ve noticed this before especially where Erec lempel is concerned he is very cowardly about things he knows will negatively impact gamers who incidentally are the people who keep him in a job. Surely most of have already noticed this new firmware is another sham engineered by SCEA’s marketing quacks. The sole purpose is not just adding vita support which the vita itself wont reach these shores for another 3 months but its a vapid attempt to force PSP owners to abandon their handhelds by making them increasingly difficult to use. Really a dispicable business tactic and the sleaziness of this companys continued actions is revolting. Unless changes start appearing immediately expect an even large exodus in the future. My point is this: screw with your sole source of revenue and you’ll lose.

  • I didn’t take the time to read everyone’s comments but is anyone else having issues since the update? Immediately after updating, I had issues getting the controllers to work. My game was incredibly slow and kept freezing. The other night I had some friends over and everything worked fine… we played two different games and even played SceneIt. And now tonight, I tried playing a different game that kept freezing so I gave up and started to watch Netflix but even had issues with it.

  • This is one of crappiest updates yet. Thanks for new features. I love how much more work I have to do, if I want to put a PSone game on my PSP, and that I cant have any new PSP games in a neat little folder. This goes right up there with you limiting any account to only 2 PSP systems and 1 PS3 system.

  • i’m sorry if my english is not good but i have something to say bout this v4.00 update.
My PS3 have been acting weird lately because of this update, my ps3 often freeze now and cause my every data in my PS3 currupted so i had to format my hardisk and redownloading everything back. what happened to 1 of my friend is even worse, his hardisk is broken so he had to buy a new 1 and redownloading everything back too.

This didn’t happen to all user but some of us experiencing this and i hope sony can release a new update version soon to fix this problem cause now i’m do not dare to turn on my PS3 and will not buy any new games until sony release a new update.

  • Safwan_hearts is on to something. SCEA is doing this for one reasin: forcing gamers to junk their PSP’s and run out and buy the vita necessitating re-purchase of all the software they had on umd as part of the process. Yet this is PS3 firmware. No adding yet another usless ICON for PS Plus on the xmb isn’t even remotely a feature. The word for that is SPAM. I’ve gotten very tired of SCEA’s PI## poor attitude to gamers who’s purchases happen to keep them operating. There are those who say buying PS3 was a mistake and this is just one more thing proving them right. SCEA you shouldn’t be doing that you should be trying to prove them wrong.

  • i totally agree with CaptainJames99. ever since i was a kid i always play and love Playstation games, i owed PS1,PS2,PSP and PS3 and will buy PSVita but if this keeps up i think i will have a change of heart because i never heard other console have this kind of problems.

so far i’m a loyal fans of Playstation console games, SCEA but don’t forget Kojima Pro games, Final Fantasy games have become multiplatform and Forza 4 is better than GT5 so please don’t mess around with us otherwise you’ll lose more of your loyal fans.

i’m just 1 of the gamers who wants to enjoy my games, so please fix this update problems.

  • The 4.0 update bricked my ps3. I had it from 2006 working great play skrim got to level 9 and updated over network and reboot crashed. RYGR light of death. Called and SONY said 120 to fix it if i didn’t open it. I have’d replaced the laser in it 2008. Now all my rock band and guitar hero stuff all gone. SONY SHOULD BE RESPONDABLE FOR UPDATE CRASHES AND ALL WE SHOULD PAY IS FOR IS SHIPPING.

  • I have a VERY important question and I NEED YOU TO ANASWER. Will there ever be a Steam app where you can view friends and do the stuff you can on the Steam for the PC. (I have Portal2 for the ps3)

    Hope you guys answer :D

  • And the 4.00 update scared the **** out of me. This is the story- A day after my update i was playing my game happily at night than uh oh my PS3 crashed. Than when i restarted my ps3 it gave me a message saying my Hard Disk may be corrupted it will restart and do a scan. it will take 2 to 3 hours to complete. I was like “???. Oh ****”. I am VERY dissapointed in this update. It killed Kinslur”s PS3. You guys must be dissapointed. Since my ps3 said it may of corrupted. Now im scared that if i play my playstation for a lot now it will just die forever. I hope sony WILL RELESE A PATCH FOR THIS PS3 CRYSIS!!! YOU BETTER PATCH IT

  • All we want is to know if a patch will becoming out soon to fix these problems, most of my games now are unplayable since the update.

  • OMG! This is the worst update EVER!! I’m thinking about modding my PS3 and put custom firmware. HOW DO I GET RID OF THE HEALTH WARNING SIGN WHEN I TURN ON MY PS3 EVERYTIME!? All I can say is, I still haven’t pre-ordered PS Vita (yes it’s a dumb name, I’m still calling it PSP2 though). It’s not on my list. There was a guy and he said he’ll give me $20 if I pre-order PSP2. I ended up pre-ordering PSP2 at GameStop (yes I know people say GameStop sucks because they’ll rip you off). There you have it. I just didn’t pre-order.

    Sony, you’re a complete failure.

    1. We have to exit a game to log onto another user.

    2. We can’t even have a voice chat outside of game chat.

    3. We see a health warning sign whenever we turn on our PS3s.

You seriously need to sort your ideas out otherwise you will lose MANY customers. You just lost omega_alpha-619 as a customer. Over 21% of PS3 users have defected to Xbox 360 because of your lack of security.

Oh, and this anti-law suit TOS isn’t helping you either. More PS3 users boycotting Sony products.

    GOOD LUCK.

  • I HAD TO INSTALL A USLESS UPDATE BUT I JUST WANTED TO PLAY MODERN WARFARE 2 ONLINE TODAY!

  • Yeah, I’m so glad I had to download this update. It caused my system to stop reading discs and movies. I’ve had my 60 gb system since launch and I’m not about to pay $130 just to get it fixed when it wasn’t my fault. I hope an update comes out and fixes my system and all of my friends systems. I wish Sony would take responsibility forcing us to update for something I don’t need. I’m am very disappointing by hoe the PlayStation 3 representatives have handled this situation. I have had no problem with Sony Vaio Laptop representatives or Sony TV representatives. This is an outrage. I paid over $600.00 on this system. It should last. The system itself looks brand new out of the box. I hope it starts working very soon.

  • I sent Sony a question concerning the update because I hadn’t downloaded it yet. I’ve been reading all of these comments about the damage it’s doing to the consoles and all of the stories I’m seeing seem to match up, but Sony responded saying that there was no way the update could be causing these problems since updates affect all PS3 systems to same. But if that’s true, why is everyone suddenly having the same problems right after getting the update! It seems to me that most people suffering are the people with older, 60GB PS3 consoles, but I’m still afraid to sign in because I know they’ll force me to get this update which apparently corrupts PSP data saved on the PS3 and freezes up newer games. This isn’t fair that I can’t even trust Sony to tell the truth when I go to them for help. I’ve put a lot of money into Playstation Home and the online games that I’ve bought! I should be able to feel safe when I log on to use these services!

  • I can’t till PSN gets hacked again! I’d rather take an Xbox 360 over a Vita.

  • Help! My PS3 won’t update to 4.00!
I just bought my PS3 in August and have only have a few system updates occur before 4.00. When I try to update via the internet (wireless or LAN), it gets to 99% complete and then just gets stuck. When I try to update from a thumb drive (following all the instructions, UPDATE folder>PS3 folder, etc.) it gets stuck instantly and reads “Checking… Please wait” forever. I’ve tried updating at least ten times now in normal AND safe mode, but to no avail. When I called tech support, they simply read me the same web page I found the manual update information on. Anyone else ever have the same problem?

  • I looked EVERYWHERE to find that health warning notification to turn it off but it’s NOT there!! If Sony puts up another useless update, there will be a hell to pay! You guys at Sony are a disgrace! Its no wonder people are leaving in their droves and heading over to Microsoft. A word of warning, if theres any more health warnng signs on the PS3 boot screen, it had better be removed IN FULL by close of business the next working day or Sony are going to have an assload of bad press to deal with. There’ll be no mums buying their kids PS3s or Vitas, just Xbox 360s. You guys constantly let us down from that fiasco with the Welcome Back Package, now to this!? No communication, no answers, no ideas? Sony sucks the big one. Sort it!

  • Because the fools that run Sony cant be arsed to have people working. Same every time, crap service, crap customer service just crap. Everyone is trying to copy Downloadable Content (DLC) from the PS3 to the PSP. But because of the stupid update, it won’t let them do it. As if they didnt know this was gonna happen!!

  • i’m sorry if i’m rude, XXCrazy1992XX. bout that health warning notification is not a bad thing cause there’s a cases where some hardcore gamers suffer some disease because of playing game too much so Sony just wants to take a safe step with their customers.

the real reason why people (including me) complaining bout this update is because it made our PS3 freeze too often or hard disc broken or all data lost.

in my case i lost all my data so i had to format my hard disc and download everything back which is bad because now we can only download 2 times without payment after that we have to pay again for DLC AND I HAVE TO REDO MY GAMES. my precious time………….

  • @safwan_hearts Because the fools that run Sony cant be arsed to have people working. Same every time, crap service, crap customer service just crap. Even if the health warning is not a bad thing, I want it to go away! I’m Mature! If I read the health warning, I’m gonna go play my Wii. Everyone should have backed up Downloadable Content (DLC) on the PS3 before they lose all of their date. As if they didnt know this was gonna happen!!

  • SONY SHOULD FIRE SOMEBODY FOR PUTTING UP A HEALTH WARNING NOTIFICATION ON THE PS3 BOOT SCREEN!

  • I am pretty upset with Sony removing the PSP transfer function. I have a Mac so I can’t use the media go program and my PSP won’t get on my wireless network because I guess it’s not compatible with wpa passwords.

Sony’s customer support solution was to find a wireless connection that will work for my PSP. Whenever I have called them with a problem their “solution” always involves either buying a new product or me being further inconvenienced. Why don’t they put out a PSP update that lets it use wpa passwords?

I asked for a refund on my remaining ps+ subscription since I really only use it for free mini games which I can no longer access and they told me no. After I realized Sony was going to be no help as usual I mentioned that I bought the playstaion 3d display the day it came out and that I wasn’t very happy it dropped $100 in price in less then a month and was told that’s called “buyers remorse”.

That comment took me from a day one vita owner to hopefully never buying it if that’s how they want to support products.

  • When is there going to be a new patch to fix this?
