A new system software update (v4.00) will be released this week. In preparation for the launch of PlayStation Vita (PS Vita) in Japan, this update will prepare PlayStation 3 (PS3) to serve as a content management device. It will allow users to copy their digital content such as games, music, photos, and videos between PS Vita and PS3, back up PS Vita game games including save data to your PS3 hard drive, and update the system software for your PS Vita system using the network features of your PS3.
Other changes to take effect with this update include:
- PlayStation Plus members can now choose to enable or disable each automatic update feature
- Game patches
- System software
- Recommended games and videos
- Sync trophy information
- New PlayStation Network settings for filtering friend requests and messages

wow that final bullet point about filtering Friend Requests & Messages would seem like a huge plus for Home users. Can’t wait to update my system & check it out
I also found other features in 4.00 such as a health warning after booting the PS3 everytime and a PS+ Icon under the PSN tab.
Just to make clarification on my other posts I dont want them to change the look of the XMB as I like it just rework the whole processing part of it so it takes less room and it allows better features.
Betcha they did this so that developers and their beta testers can fix anything that comes up (makes sense, 6 weeks of intense beta testing before their software goes gold).
And now that it’s out in the wild it also let the Sony team fix any bugs that crop up among the different SKUs before the firmware for that system is finalized.
This is very disapointing indeed…i confess myself disapointed not complaining about ps+ features, i could care less about that. what i am disapointed about is the fact that this is THE 4.0 update. And you mean to tell me minimal features? where is the logic in that? as was previously mentioned the XMB is getting old and a bit stale. i love my ps3. and i wont switch consoles just because of this. but if sony doesnt at least evolve and add new features evuatually it will crumble.
Also for those of you asking for cross game chat for the millionth time its never going to happen NEVER stop askinf for a feature that wont happen. wait for Vita
Now a feature that would be nice is the in game recordingf software. now thats something goof. maybe trophy deletion, management of friends list. perhaps amout of time playing a game being logged. kind of like X-fire for those of you who have a pc.
i have to say im dissapointed but nevertheless. perhaps this is just a stepping stone.
@Kratos1984 I agree. I think Sony should make 150MB available to everyone. And 500-1GB for PS+ users. I mean really, is 1GB of online storage even that much these days? Granted the save files are usually no bigger than 5MB, but if we have another year like this in gaming, my memory for online saves will run out, just like my bank account.
Well, all I can say is this feature is almost useless right now for our region. Almost. While the Vita is said to be fully region free, not many people here will have one just yet, and or are waiting for the NA release. While the update is good in the aspect that the Ps3 is getting prepped for Vita communication, right now it’s just a waste of time to download. Good intentions Sony, but too soon for this. However, would have been nice if there was at least one or so new features we could all use you know?

This is the first time i ever comment on their blog and im really disappointed. I turned on my ps3 and as soon as i logged in there was the 4.0 update and i screamed and got excited because i thought it was gonna be something new and just now im reading this, and this is just disappointing. it would have been like a 3.90 update instead of 4 .i really wish they at least had some new feature that can make the ps3 a little better but i guess that’s not happening.
Also, found something out that I’m not sure was in the last firmware.
You can now sort your friends list alphabetically or by status.
And this I’m positive wasn’t in the last firmware, because it was bothering me earlier today.
Now when you press Triangle and go to your friend’s message list (i.e. sent and received messages to/from only that friend) and select a message then back out, it no longer drops you back to the friends list, but rather to the message list.
Now the message list is actually useful for finding something you and your friend were talking about.

This update is garbage sorry Sony but it’s completely useless for me I will not buy a PS vita. Rename it 3.8 not 4 this patch is for vita and not for ps3.

Now release System Software Update (v.4.01) which offers an opt in / opt out setting for the health and safety warning.
For some reason when I saw this I was hoping they would have added the option to be able to look at your friend’s friends… But I guess not.

Having a few issues after updating to 4.00:
-First off, the copy function is gone under all of my games, meaning I can’t copy any minis or PS1 classics from my ps3 to my psp.
-Second, I downloaded the free mini for plus from the store, and it left the installation file in my games instead of installing it (no, it wasn’t a background download). I installed it manually, and when I went to delete the installation file, the warning it gave me made it sound like I was deleting the actual game.
-And just a comment, but we don’t need any more health warnings! They’re already pretty much on everything you can do on the ps3. We don’t need them uglying up the boot up screen, too! Tell your lawyers to relax! It’s all good!
i got a question if i dont get ps vita day one can i still play vita games on my ps3 through downloading from the ps store i hear some games olike ruin you can pick up where you left off on your ps3 or on the vita through the online storage feature
How about an update that doesn’t get an error the first 4 times and also doesn’t take hours to download? Also, maybe post the current update, not 3.73, on your support website so we can download it with our pc?
There are 7 days in a week, 5 of them workdays, what complete and utter moron scheduled the firmware and store updates for the same day? Up yours.

It only took 2 maybe 3 minutes, 5 at the most. You must have a seriously bad connection for any update to take hours. And its something wrong with your system if you get an error the first 4 times. My first and only download was perfect.

Whoa. This is messed up. You’re right. I can’t copy PSP, PS1, or Minis from my PS3 to PSP anymore, despite being signed in under the account I purchased them on. Sony I know you’re throwing the PSP under the bus but this just isn’t right.
I can’t even play my Mini on the PS3 itself. What is going on?? :(
WTF is with people? Why you want the XMB bar changed? Is great the way it is, it’s fast and easy to use, I know the update is uselless right now but it IS a great step for the PSN in terms of having compability with the next portable console, It IS a big deal and It DOES deserve to be 4.00. People just want feautures that can’t be done on the PS3.

I have owned a Playstation 3 for 4+ years now. I didn’t need this health warning before and I don’t need it now. It is irritating. At least give us a freaking option to get rid of it.
Why oh why can’t we have a cool startup like the PS1 and PS2? How many freaking ridiculous warning screens and other splash screens must we go through before we can actually startup a game?
I’m extremely upset with this. Must I seriously, really look at my manual every single time I startup the PS3 for my health and safety? WTF?!
Nevermind the last post, you could never play Tetris Mini on PS3. I’m an idiot for forgetting that!
But the first point still stands: the PS3 -> PSP copying system is messed up now. :(

Here here! The XMB is great. I’d like options to disable particular icons, but I couldn’t imagine browsing all of the content I have on my PS3 in any other manner!

When are we going to be able to delete trophies for games we no longer play/own? My Trophy folder is awfully full and cluttered.

I have to agree, remove the health warning. Every time I do anything I get one. I can’t even start a game, walk away and hope to be at the start menu with out the darn “this games saves to the HDD” click ok.

I am not sure why everyone feels entitled to more and more stuff with updates. I use my ps3 all day everyday. It does everything I need it to do. When the Vita comes out we will need those new features concerning Vita. They can get the wrinkles out now if they put out an update. Imagine if the Vita came out and it would not work properly with your PS3? Imagine the hate comments then!
When I bought my PS3 launch day it did a ton of stuff, I can’t believe the things it can do now! It might be a lackluster update, but I do not remember ever getting a promise that 4.0 would do amazing things that they did not deliver on.

To anyone that’s updated (besides me) can you move a PS1 game from the PS3 to a PSP?
@28….i agree 100%….i am at 1208 downloads and can spend anywhere from 30 minutes to 45 minutes searching if i have to reinstall something because of corruption (happens more than i would like it to).
Here are some things that I formally request be added in the next firmware update:
1) Ever since FW 3.0: After a couple seconds, all the choices in each column in the XMB disappear except for the currently highlighted item! When I am trying to decide which video I want to watch, which game I want to play, etc. I want to see all of the files in a list the way it was before FW 3.0. Please at least add an option to stop all the items in a list from disappearing, fading away, or becoming dim.
2) Add the ability to “Select multiple” and “Select All” to copy PS2 save game files. It is way too onerous to back up PS2 save files one at a time the way it is now.
3) Backup PS2 save game files when using the “Backup PS3” option in the settings menu. Movies and PS3 saves are backed up, but PS2 save files are not.
4) Add a way to disable the news ticker. It is annoying and distracting. You could disable the old orange info bar before FW 3.0, so I am puzzled why they removed this option for the new news ticker.

5) Save where we met each person in our friend’s list. As it is now, it will show what game we met a friend in only while their name is still in the “Players Met” area. After our friend is no longer in the “Players Met” section, it will not show where we met them any more. I would like that information saved permanently so I could go back and remember where I met a PSN friend I have had for years.
6) Allow a way to categorize friends. I don’t care if it is by folder, demarcation or whatever. Just add a way for us to customize our friend’s list, and sort them in our own way.
7) Allow us to add more info to our profiles. Allowing a short phrase for “about me” and another short phrase for the speech bubble coming out of our avatar is not enough. I would say at least a paragraph would be good or at the very least a field to list our favorite game or genre.

Don’t like the health warning at boot up? Why? Cause it takes 2 seconds then goes away? We all know why it has to be there, not a big deal really. and if you can’t copy a mini to your psp, try downloading it to the psp from the ps store. Pretty easy solution.
I agree it is strange for the option to be gone, but it’s not like it’s the only way for us to get the mini to the psp.

And threatning Sony with not buying their next system unless they get active party system is silly. Since the Vita will have a party system I’ll just use that when playing on the PS3. I could always use skype, or *gasp* a phone!
