A new system software update (v4.00) will be released this week. In preparation for the launch of PlayStation Vita (PS Vita) in Japan, this update will prepare PlayStation 3 (PS3) to serve as a content management device. It will allow users to copy their digital content such as games, music, photos, and videos between PS Vita and PS3, back up PS Vita game games including save data to your PS3 hard drive, and update the system software for your PS Vita system using the network features of your PS3.
Other changes to take effect with this update include:
- PlayStation Plus members can now choose to enable or disable each automatic update feature
- Game patches
- System software
- Recommended games and videos
- Sync trophy information
- New PlayStation Network settings for filtering friend requests and messages

its been proven they will never have cross chat due to an error with the way the video card is. Sony used 1 video card in the ps3 which cross chat requires 2 to make it work in game. 360 has 2 cards, which is why it has it.
Has anyone else lost functionality of some dynamic themes? I lost some on both of my PS3s
btw sony, make a new internet browser. its pretty bad when we cant visit your own sites on YOUR own ps3. I cant access any sony site correctly due to the over needed use of flash player and java…
For a powerful console, its got a horrible internet browser. I can get better results on a PC from 1995 with win98 and firefox.
SONY never said Cross Game Voice Chat wasnt possible. They only said along side the PlayStation Plus announcement that it was never announced.. They did not say if it wasn’t possible or not.. If its possible or isnt possible you will see it here first. Not IGN or any other website.

I just want my PS3 to run like a charm like it is right now it’s the first reason I got a PS3 after I did the mistake of buying a 360… I got scared of the PS3 price and went for the cheapest I regret it! I’ll never do that again. I don’t want my PS3 able to do thousands of useless things witch makes it slower and froze all the time… first time my PS3 froze was in dead island right in the middle of an autosave because of a guy quitting the session at the same time Now the save file is corrupted and I can’t play it anymore, I had lots of nice weapons and was level 47… THIS is the kind of things I don’t want to happen, these are the things sony should work hard on! Stuff that ruin our gaming experience! not stupid cross game chat!
after the update, I disabled my remote play and reactivated it via internet connection and turned off my PS3. I started up my PSP and went to remote play via internet and it worked. listening to music that is on my PS3, on my PSP as I speak. if deactivating and reactivating does not work, it has to be bad update.
Wth! Health warnings??!! Psp support??!!! Time to throw my ps3 off the 20th floor of this building..

Actually, they have said it will not be possible on PS3 due to ram. If they allowed XGC now, they would have to tell developers their new ram budget and any game from before they told them would probably not work with XGC. It just isn’t feasible at this point.
it can work its just that they are probably waiting and on top of that the developers can make it happen if they wanted too, they need to make more ram and other stuff.
Developers could make it work in new games, yes. The problem is telling people that the hundreds of games already out there do not work with it. Its not even worth the PR headache this late in the game.
Vita has XGC and PS4 will. PS3 will never have it.

Obviously people are annoyed you can’t do it on an installed game anymore, but i just found the option to do it on an uninstalled PS1 game. Still a terrible change, but at least the process is still available through PS3.
Really disappointed in Sony, this is not what 4.00 update should be. The updates they added is good to be called 3.90. You mean to tell me this justifies the extra 27 extra number to hit 4.00?
Less dropping the ball Sony. 4.00 was supposed to be a massive PS3 update, on the scale of something like XMB redesign or maybe new features like trophy cards and customizing them with deeper features. :(

I just want to rest my head and be done with this XGVC (Read: Cross Game Voice Chat) for those that dont know what XGVC is. I will always be a PlayStation gamer no matter what though! I will be buying the PlayStation VITA.. and The Wonderful PlayStation 4 when it makes its debut!
The PS3 must have its own youtube app. Navigating youtube through web browser is a horrible experience.
wow this is just great … another update with very few to show. this is just getting to a point that maybe i bought the wrong system and maybe i should have just bought a crap box instead. how is it that nothing has change in this past year and now 4.0 is here and im sure many of us was expecting something nice and what do we get?? sony you guys are not listening to your consumers , we have been wanting something new for the longest !!! the last thing i can remember that changed was when they added the glitter for the background. REALLY? … and for the ps vita? well that was a first day buy for me until i heard that there will be no type of memory inside the vita, you will have to buy the sd card that only works and is made for the vita. not to mention $120 for a 36gb that you will have to buy with your ps vita … almost $300 for just the ps vita and YOU HAVE TO BUY a vita sd card with your ps vita…. get real sony… i can tell you something, ps vita will not be first day buy for me no more… screw this crap .. WE ALL NEED TO STAND UP AS GAMERS AND SAY NO TO ALL THIS BS GOING ON … WE PAY THIS BS AND THEY’LL JUST KEEP PUSHING THIS CRAP ON US… sad really cause ive been with sony since their first playstation and this right here was just an eye opener …
I’m starting to believe we won’t see anything worth while until the PS4 comes out.
I’m never the usual complaining PS3 user talking about useless firmware updates, but for 4.0 I really expected something. For God sakes I would be happy with invisible sign in and a categorized download history list. It shouldn’t be that hard.
everyone needs to chill out, we all have ps2s and ps3s psps, whatever product of sony that brings us constanly to this webpage, everyone thats complaining sounds rediculous, you guys sound like u want the ps3 to become a ps4, thats crazy…damn, buy a ps one those dnt have updates or the perfect xmb and the 360? i have all 3 systems honestly id prefer the wii then xbox exclusives, and when u buy it you too will realize sony is alot better…

Nevermind I found it on Eurogamer!… Darn once ram is used it cant be used by the System OS… So new games will work with Cross game voice chat.. but it cannot be retrofitted to older games… Bummer… well bring on the games, and a bright future to come.
Anyone else having a problem with black ops? Since this update it loads very slow while I’m signed in and when it does load it’s not playable because it’s so slow!!! Please fix this Sony!!!!
i really want a new xmb but i cant complain loving the nfl app since i cant put up a sat dish on my app building but on the ps vita front i would like a google plus app and other google apps like maps and lattitude and also will they have music unlimited for vita

With any luck they’ve heard the cries of us who got this botched update and have removed it for the time being while they work on releasing a fix.

This update totally messed my system up. I downloaded it and it restarted as normal but it cant run the software. It wants me to reinstall the 3.72 update. Anyone else having this problem?
The only problem I have with the update is that damn epilepsy warning that you’ve added to start-up. WHY!? Wasn’t the reason you removed the “Playstation logo” start-up screen to make it quicker get into the game? And now you’ve added another 4 seconds to the startup for a warning we get ANYWAY? Get rid of it!!
Don’t know why people are complaining about the XMB…. I think its fine, a very nice menu with everything in its own column – makes it easy to get to where you want to…. if you want to watch video, go to video column; if you want to listen to music, go to music column; if you want to play a game, go to game column; etc..
I really don’t see why people are asking to change the XMB, when there are quite a few other things that Sony could work on improving, and not waste time changing something that is already great.

I am surprised 4.0 actually came out for the PS3, I was expecting v4.0 would be a brand new operating system for when Playstation 4 hardware comes out.
Sounds good to me, not sure why there is the clamor for a new XMB. The XMB works so amazingly well, there’s no need to fix what isn’t broken. It’s quick and you can get to what you need pretty easily. It’s like the Dual Shock, you perfect it the first time and there’s really no need to change it.
I would rather have PS2 playback back in a PS3 really :(

The PS3 doesn’t automatically delete install files once the game is installed. I noticed after installing the update and installing the Where is my Heart? mini.

It auto deletes PSN games, but not minis or PSone games. I think in case you wanted to put it on PSP as well, since you can’t put an installed game on PSP anymore.
