More Eco: Naughty Dog Remembers 10 Years of Jak and Daxter

Jak and Daxter Collection for PS3

It’s hard to believe it’s been ten years since Jak and Daxter found their way onto PlayStation 2 and into the gaming world. We are delighted at the place the franchise has found amongst the gaming community and the mark it has left on the platformer genre in particular. Given that we’re so close to the 10th anniversary, looking back at some of the work that went into making those awesome games seems to be in order. It’s amazing to recall just how the development of the Jak and Daxter franchise has progressed and just how far we’ve come.

With each outing in the Jak and Daxter series, we set out to create a game that offered the player a new experience that built on the previous game. As you go from Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy to Jak 3, the story will connect across the titles as the gameplay and technical aspects of the games and the tools used to create them evolved. From being on foot in Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy to the hoverboard and morph gun in Jak II to the dune buggies in Jak 3, new gameplay ideas were always in play and being fleshed out and amped up. On the technical side, for instance, Jak 3 featured a new terrain renderer that included bump-mapping, which is now a commonplace element in rendering terrain. Cloth dynamics and rag-doll physics, also standard features in many modern games, were new developments by the time that Jak 3 was released in 2004.

Jak and Daxter Collection for PS3

All in all, the evolution of the franchise was a long, fun and winding road, and we are delighted to be able to share it with the current console generation. With the Jak and Daxter Collection, we’re bringing the first three installments of the original PS2 series to PS3 on one Blu-ray disc. Mass Media has been working closely with our team at Naughty Dog to remaster Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy, Jak II and Jak 3 for the collection. Each title will now offer refined 720p High Definition visuals, smoother gameplay animation, full stereoscopic 3D functionality and trophy support.

Looking back at the old code and comparing it to this newly minted code is pretty amazing. Our beloved Jak and Daxter franchise and its colorful cast of characters looks, and still plays, truly awesome. The technology and the development work that went into making The Jak and Daxter Collection is remarkable. We’re looking forward to hearing your thoughts and stories once you get your hands on the collection.

  • Searching for all the precursor orbs was one the best times I’ve spent with my PS2, and i can’t believe it’s been 10 years since then. Great job Evan and the entire Naughty Dog team! I can’t wait for all of the PS3 users out there to enjoy the Jak series.

  • nice I wonder if there will be a Jak 4 announced at the VGA’s

  • Woot! Jak and Dax in 3D!!

Dreams do come true! Thanks guys!

    New installment coming?

  • Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy was the first game I got when I picked up (thanks dad) my ps2. What a wonderful TRULY wonderful game to start my ps2 gaming. I will be picking this up to relive such great games.

  • I can’t wait till these are released, I’ve missed Jak and Daxter

  • I will buy the ‘Jak and Daxter Collection’ ;) Was more of a R&C PS2 fan really but liked the PS2 demos of J&D(which i still got) LoL

  • The year J&D released, I got two copies for Christmas. One from my parents and one from my aunt. It’s the first and only time I’ve received the same gift twice. Guess I made it pretty clear to everyone that I wanted the game.

  • Naughty Dog makes the best games I ever played and my main favorite is the jak and daxter series (Jak 3 best) I WILL buy the Jak and Daxter collection and hope there is more in the future for this series

  • The Jak franchise also marks the first time in my mind that I can remember a game carrying out an over-arching plot over a trilogy and being successful at it from a story perspective. The final “reveal” in the 3rd game was incredibly satisfying and so well worth experiencing all the games for.

  • I love Jak and Daxter my first games that i ever played…cant wait to play them in HD but if i have to spend $200 to beat Jak 2 again im going to flip..i got mad alot lol i really hopes Jak has one more game in him. cheer to 10 years of Daxters bad/good jokes lol

  • I can’t wait to find out how Daxter’s Pants subplot ends again.

Are there any changes to the game?

    Examples:

Is the 93% game breaking save bug going to be fixed?
Is what’s her names character model going to change after you beat the game in the shooting gallary?

    • The games will run at 720p and be playable in 3D with full trophy support. The game breaking save bug shouldn’t be there either :)

  • Last Gen, I didn’t have a PS2 till really late. I never got the chance to play the Jak series. I was extremely happy when it was announced that they would be releasing a HD Collection because now I have the chance to play it :)

  • The HD Collection screenshots still look sub-720p native with no anti-aliasing. Very rough looking.

  • Jak and Daxter was the first PS2 game I ever played and it’s still hands down one of the best. I will most certainly be picking up this collection day 1.

  • I loved playing through the series. I’m tempted to nab the collection sometime in the near future.

  • Can’t freaking wait! This series was the best series on the PS2 and the only games I played growing up!

  • The Jak and Daxter franchise was a true experience when it came out, and it remains to this day. To think that I was only 12 years old the first time I got eaten by a Lurker Shark after diving off Samos’ hut repeatedly. At 22 years old now, I still play the games, and I’ll definitely be buying the Collection when it comes out!

Thanks for the memories, Naughty Dog!

  • Jak & Daxter is one of my favorite franchises on the PS platform. I remember how deep I fell into the story and wanted to collect all the precursor orbs and defeat those annoying metal heads. It would be nice if there was a next installment in the franchise following The Lost Frontier.

  • I’m going to play whack a mole 50 times then!

  • Thank you ND for the great games that you have brought to the PlayStation over the years. Thank you thank you thank you. I own and have beaten all 3 of the Uncharted games and will be getting platinum in them. I missed the Jax game series growing up and will need to get this collection so I can experience your guys last generation gem franchise.

Also Sony keep releasing the really great collections remastred on Blu Ray cause I love the fact that there are tons of old classics for good prices and put all the others in the store. I picture a future with every classic PSone and PS2 game available for download and play on either the PS3 or the PSV.

    Sold.

  • Thank you Naughty Dog. These ARE still my fav. game of all time. So many awesome memories with Jak and Daxter and this is the reason why I love Playstation consoles and you Naughty Dog being my fav. DEV’s. Keep up the Great work Dogs I will be sure to get these games day 1 and spend lots my time collecting power cells, precursor orbs and killing good old metal heads xD

  • I loved the trilogy on the PS2. Depending on the time(not difficulty) it could take to get the Platinum, this could become one of my priorities for me or not. You can’t blame me, I already enjoyed those game on the PS2 :)

My favorite one was the first one :) One of the first games that I played that were on my first language(I only knew Spanish at the time) ten years ago and liked the Spanish voice acting =D

  • Alongside of my favorite platformer of all time Sly Cooper, the Jak & Daxter series is definitely one of my favorite. I love Jak to 3, although rest after third game don’t appeal to me at all. I hope who ever owns the Jak Series makes a good game on the PS3. I will always have hope for the series. I will definitely pick it up, I really want experience the 3 games again.

  • I’m looking forward to playing the real Jak and Daxter games for the first time on this collection. I was not a fan of The Lost Frontier.

  • oh wow…first picture looks awesome!, i hope that’s how all 3 games will look like!, can’t wait to play them again in HD!!!!, sandover village here i come!.

  • I can’t wait until the Jak and Daxter collection comes out! I have been waiting for it for a long time! Those pictures look amazing!

  • also, i’d die for jak and dax to make a comeback with ND and the uncharted engine powering it on the ps3….do it!.

  • I would like to thank you guys for lending out the Jak and Daxter engine to Insomniac for Ratchet and Clank. I love both series and can’t wait to pick this up. Then I will wait for the inevitable Ratchet and Clank Collection while playing.

  • ND please bring back Jak and Daxter and have a new game on PS3, Jak and Daxter 4???

  • The Jak series offered me hours upon hours of endless enjoyment on the Ps2. I still own Jak II and Jak III for the system. Never being convinced with Naughty Dogs work on; the in my opinion on the slipshod Crash Series, and never truly feeling the excitement others did with the original but bare bones Jak and Daxter. Naughty Dog in my opinion became first class premiere developers with Jak II and III. Stunning visuals, some of THE BEST platforming missions, be it running and jumping through forests, sewers, complexes and ruins, mixing hover-boarding sections, paragliding or driving an armed buggy through the dunes offered within the two games story-line and fun arcade shooting mechanics to boot with crazy weaponry, it was immensely enthralling. Despite Jak IIs rough city scape a.i and design, initial difficulty and Jak IIIs ponderous start that elevated into the spectacular. Those 2 games in my opinion were hallmarks of the Ps2 era and are simply legendary entertainment. Cheers. We need you back boys for Jak 4…goatee and all.

  • “For those of you who are longtime fans, get ready to experience the Jak and Daxter you love in a fresh new light. If you’re new to the franchise, be ready to get hungry for more eco.”

Hearing those words from Evan Wells himself makes my mouth drool eco.

  • So glad Naughty Dog haven’t abandoned Jak and remember it! I’ve certainly remembered it, my favourite series of all time!

I’ll be picking up that collection the first second it is released! Be hunting those orbs, kicking those lurkers and getting the guards on the run all in HD on the ps3 with trophies!

Yay Mass Media/Naughty Dog & Evan wells!

  • I’m so excited! I have all three games for PS2 and a working PS2, but I’m still buying this. I have a few questions:
    1. How much will it cost?
    2. Will it be available on the PS Store on release day?
    Thanks!

  • Missed out on these 3 games, but thanks for remastering them! Looking forward to playing it on 3D and getting trophies.

  • Hate to break it to you eaglefan129 but there is already a Jak 4. It’s called Jak & Daxter: The Lost Frontier

  • @35 That game sucked. We need an ACTUAL Jak 4.

  • This is with out a doubt, the one game I will show to my children in adulthood.

  • I’m tempted to buy The Jak and Daxter Collection purely to show support for a Jak 4. But ONLY if Naughty Dog make it. I’m sure they need a break from the Uncharted series by now.. right? ;)

  • This a Merely a what if question…If you released jakX onto the ps3 would it have playstation network compatibility such as online play? PLEASE REPLY

  • Jak and Daxter= greatest games ever made, ever.

  • the first game i played on my playstation 2 was jack 2 and i had loved it! Never got a chance to play the 1st or 3rd but now that there being ported over i can finally play them! can not wait!!!!

  • I loved all 3 games and cant wait for this. Hopefully this sparks intrest in the series again.

  • i remember getting the first jak and daxter game, so much good memories, cant wait for this to come out

  • Jak and Daxter (1) is the only good game of the series, why bother making a ”HD” collection? instead just put the damn games in the ps2 classic section on the store

  • Andy Gavin and Jason Rubin should help out with the new Jak game if they do make one. They are the ones who started the series, same with Crash Bandicoot.

  • Also I would love to see the games in 60 fps

  • My all time favorite platformer. Kudos to bringing these games to a new generation of gamers in HD. I hope to also get a sequel to J&D:Lost Frontier, that was an awesome psp game. My Go is in need of this.

  • I’m looking forward to this collection, I got stuck in the second game on a Whack a mole mini-game man I was frustrated, won every other mission just to get stuck at that mini-game, Hopefully there will be a second Collection WITH JAK X, and probably Daxter and Jak & Daxter: Lost Frontier.

  • I will thank you til the end of time! THANK YOU, THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!

NAUGHTY DOG! YOU MADE MY LIFE BETTER WITH THIS! i’M SERIOUS!
