This Thursday, December 8th, we will release the latest update to the PlayStation Home client. PlayStation Home version 1.60 delivers a wealth of improvements and updates to the core client, not the least of which is a doubling of the item placement limit in personal spaces! Here’s a look at what’s coming to you as part of PlayStation Home v1.60:

How to Apply the v1.60 Patch
If you are upgrading from an old version of Home (v1.40 or earlier) then when you attempt to apply the v1.60 patch please wait for the orange “hard drive activity” light to stop flashing on your PS3 before commencing the patching process.

NEW FEATURES

    Furniture Placement Limit

  • We have doubled the furniture placement limit in personal spaces and clubhouses from 50 to 100 items.
  • Standard and active furniture limits have been merged into the same system. Currently all actives take up 22 furniture slots in the new system. Thus you can now place a variety of different combinations:
    • 100 standard furniture items or…
    • 78 standard furniture items and 1 active or…
    • 56 standard furniture items and 2 actives or…
    • 34 standard furniture items and 3 actives or…
    • 12 standard furniture items and 4 actives.

GENERAL IMPROVEMENTS

    Targeting in Personal Spaces

  • Targeting in personal spaces has been improved.
  • This means you shouldn’t accidentally target furniture items through floors or ceilings any more.
    • Although we have made exceptions for wall hangings and lights as these tend to be placed quite high up.
    • If you find any items of furniture in places you can’t reach then you can always remove them through the furniture browser and place them somewhere else.
    Portable Items and Companions

  • We have changed the way that companion portables work so they will now automatically re-activate after you enter and leave a game or relocate between spaces. No more having to put your companion away and take them out again when you do this!
    Help System

  • There is a new help system to aid new users as they explore PlayStation Home for the first time.
    Arcade Games

  • Arcade games are no longer subject to the 3 minute inactivity timeout when placed as furniture in Personal Spaces or Clubhouses.

CHANGES

    Menu Pad

  • We have removed the “Community” section of the Menu Pad. The information that used to be contained in here is now communicated via the Message of the Day pop-up at login and the new loading screens.

Of course, there are plenty more bug fixes and enhancements that are part of v1.60 as well which will help improve your day-to-day experience in the wide world of PlayStation Home. There are also additional tools for developers that will enable them to make better games than ever before possible on the platform are coming as part of this massive update. We’re excited to bring you a bigger, better PlayStation Home just in time for the holidays. Log in this Thursday to check out this upgrade and, as always, please give us your feedback at the official PlayStation Home forums.

In other news, it appears that ol’ Granny Lockwood’s been hard at work again, and this time she’s taken her inspiration from the chilly extremes of the planet the North and South Poles! Pumpkin Pie the Polar Bear and Popsicle the Penguin can’t wait to play with you. They both love to do tricks – be patient and they’re sure to show you what they can do (Granny Lockwood also knitted them some cousins just for the Gift Machine – look out for them – they’re only available for a limited time!)

Midwinter Angel or Burning Desire? This Winter Medusa line brings you the latest hairstyles, perfect for relaxing on a frosty afternoon or heading out to a glitzy evening party. Men have the choice of a new short, mid-length, or long look. The Troy is a side-parted, clean-cut look with just enough tousling to ensure it won’t look out of place with smart or casual attire. For those with angelic tendencies, there’s the wavy mid-length Gabriel, and for those who want a more casual look, The Tropical Dreamer is a long dreadlocked style.

Ladies can opt for up, down, or somewhere in-between. Up is The Burning Desire, an exquisitely complex do incorporating pinned waves and plaits, while down is The Eve, with gloriously long waves. The Midwinter Angel offers the best of both worlds, with pinned back sides and long loose locks. If you’re not sure which look to go for, the Medusa’s Winter Hairstyles Packs are available for both Male and Female – mix it up for each party!

Those of you that visit the new PlayStation Home Mall this week will also find awesome new items like VEEMEE’s “Devilrobots” companions and “Smug” furniture line alongside Mass Media’s latest additions to their Weird Wear series and various other items including new animated emoticons, companions (who doesn’t want a peacock?), new items in Threads (such as the Hollywood Celebrity line) and furniture (like the Star Projector)! Log in this Thursday to add these items to your collections! I hear there are going to be some freebies scattered throughout many of the shelves in the Mall this week as well…

Community Theatre

The PlayStation Home Community Theater is updated this week with new content from Gamer Indepth—ShoutOuts, episode 20 and Luge Control, episode 3. In ShoutOuts, the team covers recent holiday community events, and showcases some of the spooky content releases, and Luge returns covering her first experiences in Home’s newest game RC Rally.

Lastly, our friends over at nDreams are excited to give you a sneak peek of their new War Room Clubhouse, coming soon to PlayStation Home. Check out this early screen shot from nDreams:

nDreams War Room

For those who may not know, PlayStation Home Clubhouses are unique private spaces where users can invite dozens of their friends to be members of the club, and anyone on the members list can come and go from the space, even when the owner is not present. These are excellent for building and sustaining gaming groups, clans, brotherhoods, sisterhoods, etc. because of this very flexibility and access as an invite-only space.

In addition to all the standard features you’ve come to expect from PlayStation Home Clubhouses, the War Room has a very unique social feature that helps club owners or team leaders get their message across during club meetings or discussions. It also includes a special access point allowing users to teleport from the War Room to other set locations. We’ll have more info regarding this awesome new Clubhouse soon – keep your eyes on this Blog to stay in the loop!

See you in Home!

Cannot believe Sony keeps wasting time on home……Sony will leave gaming all together if it fails as bad with the PS4 as it did with PS3.

You should post your ideas in the monthly suggestion thread on the forum. A lot of things we have in Home came from that “tool”. Including many of the features for tomorrow’s update.

Efforts spent on home would stop being wasted if they started doing what those using Home actually wanted got implemented. But masterofpuppetz is saying openly what many are thinking. Unless SCEA changes course completely and immediately their ship will sink like a 21st century Titanic.

I’d like a patch where I wouldn’t get knocked off every five minutes. It happens even when I connected with an ethernet wired connection. Not much incentive to spend time there when I have to re-log on every few minutes.

Wow. Just wow. You guys dropped the bomb on us this weekend. This announcement is even more epic than the new spaces being released. 100 Item Limit, a new Clubhouse on the way and variations for up to 4 active items; now that is impressive. Glass, my hat goes off to the geniuses who figured out how to reallocate the memory patterns to fit more stuff. That is what efficient programming is all about. I’m also really excited about the fact that third parties in Home like NDreams are finally paying attention to Clubs. This update is long overdue and will certainly take Home to new levels.

One question:

Can we finally put up picture frames in the clubhouse as a result of this update?

Once again, to you, Locust and the rest of the Home team as well as the third parties, thanks for the incredible update and keep up the good work. I can see that I will be having a lot of fun one this semester is over.

I see a few people come here to knock Home but I have never seen your names on our Home forums. Gang, I have seen this place come from just a hole in the wall to what it is today because of it’s very vocal users who are constructive in their concerns, wants and wishes about Home and have help build Home from within.

So while some may talk about what Home is not, I’m gonna put on my Drake avatar outfit, head to my Fortune Hunters Apt and put up all the cool stuff I won from the UC3 Home space and then game launch into UC3 from my Apt and think about what Home is and what it will be..

Oh my goodness!!! THANK YOU SO MUCH ! ! ! !
More room! This is wonderful news.

By the way…..I really need this please unless you can share a workaround:

>> Can the PlayStation® HOME’s browse pictures from HDD feature group the pics by month or something? When I’m choosing pictures for my picture frames, it is very tedious to have to scroll through hundreds of pics from my HDD just to find that one image that I know is down to the bottom of the list. Sometimes I need to try pics to see how they look (rotating the frame as well) and so it is time-consuming, frustrating and tedious to have to scroll through hundreds of pics (each one necessary to keep on my HDD) everytime.

Much appreciated if you can solve that problem.

I get this is free and I really shouldn’t be asking for much, but Home really needs to change to even compete in the gaming world.

I have played MMOs and open world games for years now and I can tell you that the vast majority of time I spent in these games is just messing around and exploring, Skyrim is a perfect example. What I like about these games is that I “go to” these games and not so much “play them”. So please make Home an open world experience where I can go and join friends and meet new people.

Ok this is my vision of what Home should be if I was in charge… I wish. New engine, make it less realistic and more stylized so that when new customs are introduced they don’t look out of place. Much more animations so that your avatar looks and feels like a game character and not a forums avatar that walks around and can wear different stuff…. I want to jump and run. I want an equipment or gadget system that gives me stats that are needed for games or other stuff. Make your trophy level your “in game level” that gives more stats and many skills. These are game mechanics that work pretty well and are not exclusive to any platform or even time.

70

+ Glaukon on December 7th, 2011 at 2:36 pm said:

Like I said I played MMOs before, but I always leave because the only way to continue “progress” after you reach the level cap is to raid or pvp, which of course depends more on others than me, so I need to commit to a time and so we can all play. That sounds like work… so no thank you. Home can do that and more; imagine quests and story lines that reward you with PS3 trophies so that you can “level up” instead of experience, even though it is the same thing.

+ Glaukon on December 7th, 2011 at 2:37 pm said:

Image you are RUNNING or on your spaceship or simply your super fast magic horse and you near a beach, on this beach there is nice bar that is full of not so nice people. Still you keep looking for a friendly face and then there he is, Nathan Drake. You start talking with him and he tells you that there is this ruin near by and he thinks there is some very valuable loot to find there, so he asks you to join him. Next the two of you are fighting a bunch of pirates, then monsters, then zombies and when everything is over you reach for the loot but its missing. Drake tells you that maybe someone already took it, so he looks for clues then asks you meet him back at the bar for the next step of your journey. On your way back you find Zeke from Infamous and he tells you that Cole has been kidnapped by zombies and he needs to be rescued and asks you to join him…

72

+ Glaukon on December 7th, 2011 at 2:37 pm said:

This is what I want from Home, a meta video game. Image a world 10 times bigger that skyrim but not as detailed where all of the playstation franchises exist forever on persistent world. I have always found it sad that the amazing worlds and art created for games become irrelevant once the game is “over.” While I know I can go there or play the game as many times as I want I know that I am simply going back to repeat a scenario that I have already been through. MMOs fix that problem but I have no connection to a building or a beach just because they look pretty. If you played uncharted 2 and saw drake hang out on the bar and then YOU can hang with him along with your friends and other people, or in that little village in Nepal… I can’t see why people who are a fans of the game wouldn’t find that amazing. Image you could go a mission with cloud from FF7 or Sev from killzone, cole from infamous, Jack and daxter. One thing that Playstaion does not have a shortage of is characters.

73

+ Glaukon on December 7th, 2011 at 2:37 pm said:

Home in this case wouldn’t be so much about having a personal space and buying useless junk for you house so you could play doll house with you friends over the internet. It would be PlayStation The Game, it would show the history of franchises, every major game would have its own space and its followers who would advertise the game themselves. Games are not movies or books so why advertise them as such? You play a game and experience something unique so why sale it the same way Hollywood sales movies? Sale the experience in a language that gamer understand and immediately connect with. If a game developer wants to sell me a story then allow them to use Home sell me something that nears the experience that I can buy. There are around 55 million PS3s out there but ps3 exclusives can’t seem to go beyond the 1.5 million mark in the first month with its sales. Home can do wonders if used properly.

74

+ Glaukon on December 7th, 2011 at 2:38 pm said:

Do not stream content give me the option to install the whole experience to our system so that when i am exploring I see nothing that interrupts my immersion. Or even more greedy make whole experience Home so that when I turn on my ps3 or ps4 I show in my personal space, with all my furniture and clothing but when I want to go explore i simply walk out the door. I can access all my media though my space, netflix, twitter movies, but can also pull out a gadget that lets me use an UI similar as the one that is on the ps3 now. Instead of selling ps3 themes sell me big personal space where i can store and see all my PLATINUM trophies.

75

+ Glaukon on December 7th, 2011 at 2:38 pm said:

I play all of kinds of games but my favorite is the console because I know it’s a dedicated machine that focuses on providing me with my favorite type of media. I hated when people say that consoles will die because of its limitations, but also get scared I find a little bit of truth in there views. Playstation is not a machine but a platform and it shouldn’t only be about its horsepower but also on its uniqueness. Only possible on Playstation. If Sony wants the Playstaion brand to remain relevant as new technology is introduced it needs to redefined what it means to play with the playstaion. An experience like the one I been trying to explain would definitely put SONY as the revolutionary of entertainment that so badly wants to be. I would ensure its presence in the future as the technology reaches the point when graphics become a constant and games are differentiated but its gameplay and story.

This changes are definitely not happening anytime soon if ever but this is my vision… what is yours. I really hope someone reads this because as you may know I spent a lot more time on this post that I intended. Tell me what you think what changes you make and other features would u add how the many different genres of games would feet in Home but still feel retained its soul.

I have owned ps1, ps2, psp, ps3 and will likely buy psvita but this is my first post on this blog so be gentle and I will probably post on the forums as well too because I really want to see what people think about this and also from the developers of home. And understand that it is because I love the idea of home that all of this ideas come out

Also, since message of the day can no longer be viewed from the menu (in black and white) is there any chance of larger text or making MOTD black and white, because I can never read the MOTD in the pop up, but I can in the menu (has something to do with the high contrast text).
