The Last of Us for PS3

Videos have been flying around all week about a new PS3 exclusive called The Last of Us. It was revealed at this year’s VGAs and we’re very excited to confirm that The Last of Us is developed by Naughty Dog Inc, the creators behind the UNCHARTED, Jak and Daxter, and Crash Bandicoot series. Neil Druckmann, Creative director and Bruce Straley, Game Director chime in below to divulge what The Last of Us is all about.

The Last of Us is a genre-defining experience that blends survival and action elements to tell a character driven tale about a modern plague decimating mankind. Nature encroaches upon civilization, forcing remaining survivors to kill for food, weapons and whatever they can find. Joel, a ruthless survivor, and Ellie, a brave young teenage girl who is wise beyond her years, must work together to survive their journey across what remains of the United States.

We hope this teaser trailer has whet your appetite. We’re excited we can finally begin to peel back the curtain on The Last of Us and discuss how we’ve been working as a two team studio. For further information about The Last of Us, the PlayStation.Blog will be the first place to hear about this exciting new title from some of the industry’s most talented game designers.

Looking forward to it, I know to expect a good game when it’s under Naughty Dog.

Slightly off topic. I’ve noticed your natural studio progression is three games in a franchise and then a cart racer. We need an Uncharted kart racer. xD Just like CTR or Jak X Racing. Even if it’s just a short downloadable title…it would be a hell of a lot of fun.

So…. its the The Road, but with mutants, and a little girl rather than a little boy who looks like a little girl. There are too many post-apocalyptic games and movies now. I was hoping Naughty Dog had more originality than that. I hate to belittle ND, but this doesn’t look good with all the statements that Uncharted was unoriginal and played off Tomb Raider and the Indiana Jones series. Just make another Jak game like everyone wants.

+ JimBuster007 on December 11th, 2011 at 4:05 pm said:

Why is everyone hating on Valve? No doubt this game looks amazing, but Valve makes quality games.

I love you Naughty Dog!

+ rabidninjamonky on December 11th, 2011 at 4:33 pm said:

This game looks great, but did you guys have to pay any royalties to Will Smith? It’s basically I am legend the game, with a white will Smith and a girl instead of a dog. Still gonna get it though lol.

Very excited for this. The Naughty Dog logo pretty much sold me the game before I even saw the trailer. Sony has a great caliber studio under its belt.

Things I hope the game does:
1. Make it survival based. I want to have to search around large areas to find items to survive. If you’re not making it open world, at least go the Crysis 2 route and give me some options. Uncharted is great as a linear game, but this should be a bit different.
2. Better hit reactions. Uncharted’s are arguably 2nd or 3rd best in the industry but when you look at something like Red Dead (or Max Payne 3), they’ve just managed to nail those ragdoll physics.
3. Make it a long game! I can;t see this being a multiplayer game (unless you put in a horde mode) so I want to get a lot of value out of it. Uncharted 3 was just a little bit too short for my liking.

Those are my only concerns. Uncharted 3 is my favorite game that I’ve ever played and I have a lot of faith in Naughty Dog to deliver something truly “genre-defining” and extraordinary.

+ ABACADA6494 on December 11th, 2011 at 5:52 pm said:

So we have Naughty Dog as a two team studio… hmm one team working on this and the other working on ??? hopefully the second team that isn’t working on this is getting into Jak 4? pretty please? But this game looks awesome. I don’t know a darn thing about it but it looks cool. It’ll turn out awesome

+ ABACADA6494 on December 11th, 2011 at 5:56 pm said:

Oh and for people saying Naughty Dog has no originality, they never really did. Uncharted was just a really really well done rip off of Tomb Raider and Indiana Jones. Uncharted became a great bunch of games because they ripped off from the best and made very well told personal stories. Jak and Daxter was just another platformer adventure game in the same vein as Mario 64 and Spyro and stuff. It was and is wonderful, but not really original. Jak II just ripped off the guns of Ratchet and clank and fused them with an open world a la GTA III. Jak 3 just built on that. and Crash Bandicoot was just great 3D platformer. They have originality in their characters and stories, not usually gameplay and settings.

+ jazzyrider on December 11th, 2011 at 6:28 pm said:

Looks like another winner from Naughty Dog. As someone else pointed out, it reminds me of Will Smith’s “I Am Legend”.

+ vince8502 on December 11th, 2011 at 6:57 pm said:

I really wish Joel was actually Nathan Drake, Ellis was the baby Drake and Elena created together, and halfway through the game they reunite. Either that, or put Drake and Elena somewhere in the game…

One interesting thing I noted was that unlike most survival/adventure games that start at the same time or slightly after the outbreak, indications are that these characters have been living through this for a few years. While it likely won’t impact gameplay, it does allow from some unique narrative freedom that most other zombie based games do not have.

+ KILLA_KING_007 on December 11th, 2011 at 9:47 pm said:

So……when’s it coming out ?

+ SkyShadowNinja91 on December 11th, 2011 at 9:55 pm said:

what i hope LOU includes:
-Online coop/multiplayer (maybe like one team the creatures and other team the surviors)
-many hours of gameplay
-able to go inside many buildings

When i saw the logo my jaw dropped. Frostbite Engine + Naughty Dog + zombie-like genre game = $$$

I hope there is a collectors edition of the game!

+ GENBortlett on December 11th, 2011 at 10:17 pm said:

+ mustbehiggy on December 11th, 2011 at 11:02 pm said:

When I seen her picking through the empty rounds to get the one useable round, I couldn’t help but think of Fallout: New Vegas. I hope this game is somewhat like that, it gave me a Dead Island feel (which I haven’t played) but I know Naughty Dog are awesome. I think this style of “survival” game shouldn’t be quite as linear as say Uncharted franchise.

I hope it’s set out like New Vegas style but maybe not QUITE as big because I tend to feel I get stuck in a game like that and then after a while there is actually so much to do that I get somewhat bored of it.

@36 WOW, your a moron. Half life 2 garbage? Easily one of the best games…ever. Valve dead? They re one of the biggest and best devs around period. Left for dead doesnt look like a ps1 game either. Also, gameplay > graphics. L4D was all about online and co-op. Half Life is amazing.

Ever hear of Steam? Portal? Valve are huge and an amazing creative talent. Your an idiot. Valve dead? LMAO, yeah all those million they make means they are dead, they are huge off steam alone.

+ mastorofpuppetz on December 12th, 2011 at 4:48 am said:

@165, you see how ignorant PS3 fanboys can be. Valve is prob the most consistent quality developer around. Theya re butt hurt, because valve didn’t like PS3 because of its terrible architecture. Valve games are better on c anyway, consoles are outdated.

Looks pretty good. I don’t think it will beat Uncharted in sales though.
its got a feel of Resident EVIL meets Uncharted
The girl you help around She reminds me of RE4 Girl you had to help around also.

+ krae_man on December 12th, 2011 at 7:59 am said:

I hope this game is good. You sacrificed a lot of quality in Uncharted 3 to develop this game at the same time. Seriously, Uncharted 3 was a broken buggy mess. Not Skyrim bad, but a real disappointment compared to Uncharted 2 which can easily be put in the “best game of all time” discussion, while Uncharted 3 isn’t anywhere close to that with it’s crap load of bugs, Features removed, Story ends so abruptly it feels like the real ending was cut for time, etc.

Not your best work Naughty Dog, I hope you make up for it with this game.

Umm, I’m not on a horse, I’m on a public forum on Sony’s Blog where a whiny, fake Naughty Dog “fan” (YOU) chose to post your sad, whiny thoughts on a trailer for a game we know next to nothing about.

Don’t be mad at me because I pointed out that you are a whiny poser. Seriously, I didn’t type your post. You did.

Go Naughty Dog!!! I trust you to make an amazing game!!

A Real Fan ;-)
