The Last of Us for PS3

Videos have been flying around all week about a new PS3 exclusive called The Last of Us. It was revealed at this year’s VGAs and we’re very excited to confirm that The Last of Us is developed by Naughty Dog Inc, the creators behind the UNCHARTED, Jak and Daxter, and Crash Bandicoot series. Neil Druckmann, Creative director and Bruce Straley, Game Director chime in below to divulge what The Last of Us is all about.

The Last of Us is a genre-defining experience that blends survival and action elements to tell a character driven tale about a modern plague decimating mankind. Nature encroaches upon civilization, forcing remaining survivors to kill for food, weapons and whatever they can find. Joel, a ruthless survivor, and Ellie, a brave young teenage girl who is wise beyond her years, must work together to survive their journey across what remains of the United States.

We hope this teaser trailer has whet your appetite. We’re excited we can finally begin to peel back the curtain on The Last of Us and discuss how we’ve been working as a two team studio. For further information about The Last of Us, the PlayStation.Blog will be the first place to hear about this exciting new title from some of the industry’s most talented game designers.

I felt Uncharted 3 was a huge dissappointment, It was way to on rails, same old same old and even shorter and the shooting was suspect. Figured ND would try to add more to the gameplay but they just did the same thing they already did in UC2.

Great to see ND are given the creative freedom to explore new IPs. Lookin’ forward to new info. By the looks of it Ellie is in fact Ellen Page. Her mimics, gestures and voice fit. Looks like ND’s full performance capture method used in Uncharted.

Not to get off topic of this game, but to those few people mentioning that this is “ripping off” Will Smith and the movie I am Legend. You guys do realize don’t you? That I am Legend was just a Remake of an older movie called Omega Man from 1971. So no they don’t need to pay Will Smith anything, because he doesn’t do anything original to begin with. LOL ;)

I’m very excited for this title; I full heartily believe this game will rank amongst the greatest games made if given the full Naughty Dog polish. If there is one suggestion I can make… it’s to make the game play deep, not full RPG deep but a little more open world than Drakes and item collection will make this title EPIC. Most don’t mind back tracking if its worth it in story and game play satisfaction. I really can’t wait to see what creativity Naughty Dog brings to The Last Of Us.

@OleGunnar – It’d be nice if you grew up out of your lonely elitist world. It’s obvious you don’t know what whining is, so it’d be nice if you knew what you were talking about before you hit that Post Comment button below. And yeah, such a “true fan” as you doesn’t even play the mulitplayer, so i’m sure they can thank you for all your feedback on that.. oh wait. You don’t have the platinum either, i figure a true fan would take the time to fully appreciate a games and do everything they could in it that the developer would want people to do. But blindly do what you will sir.

@169 – That’s what i’m saying.

Ehh? yet again another “survival and action elements” video game coming out , haven’t america already overused this genre quite enough . What in movies , tvshows , and video games i thought the graphic masterminds of ND would come up with something … more unique as any other game developer should . I wait till this baby comes out to see if it hits my interest . Cause the trailer looks a bit (seen that , been there
) feel

Wow…I had to stop reading comments because I accumulated so much to say. First, to shadysaiyanz, I can’t with good sense see how zombies and brain-infected people by any means have the exact same behaviour. “Brain-infected” (which could mean anything, by the way…not sure where you’re taking that) would not have a typical movement type. If the mobility center isn’t infected, they can keep balance and run. If higher logic isn’t infected, they can use guns and tools and machines. A “Brain-infected” person is by grand degrees of variation just a human that by no will of their own wants to kill other people, either to eat them or just out of anger or maybe to collect their pretty teeth or whatever. Zombies are reanimated dead. Zombies typically shamble. Zombies must be shot in the head. That’s a…kinda solid box they fit into.

For those that think Naughty Dog should not have made a survival action game when so many exist, I want to know if you argued that same point when the third or fourth IP hit the market from some other developers. Or even if you cried foul when Crest developed their 5th kind of toothpaste, or Hamburger Helper came out with its 12th version of meat and cheese. There is variety because people have different tastes and needs. I personally have not found a survival horror I am particular excited about until this. This looks to focus more on the adrenaline of survival and less on the horror to be survived. When similar elements came up in the first Uncharted game, I loved it. If the whole game had been marketed like that, I wouldn’t have. This is different enough that it does have a place in this “saturated” genre you speak of.

Concerning gameplay, this trailer is not comparable to the Dead Island trailer. That trailer was a thematic trailer setting the mood for the game, while this TLOU trailer is actual in game CGI as it would be seen on the PS3. Given its comparable quality to other games from the same developer, I would say gameplay would at least look as good as UC3. I really don’t think this would disappoint you as a fan of Naughty Dog if you’re truly a fan of their work and not just a fan of the types of games you’ve played by them.

+ Crash15 on December 13th, 2011 at 2:37 pm said:

That girl looks like Ellen Page man I have a feeling you modeled out her character haha . Man right on the dot you guys never disappoint looking forward to this game these are the games I like adventure with survival on top that’s why I loved the Crash Bandicoot series but, if only Jason Rubin was with you guys it would be awesome to see him again.

Cool. Now bring Jak X to the PS3 goddammit! And Jak 4 or Mar or something…

+ omega_alpha-619 on December 13th, 2011 at 3:59 pm said:

It IS NOT Ellen Page, the female lead character is played by Ashley Johnson. Google it. o.0

+ shadysaiyanz on December 13th, 2011 at 7:48 pm said:

@ShadowPhoenix18 – Thanks for the feedback Phoenix. You’re right that there is probably some brain too them but i don’t expect them to be any smarter than what we saw, if they are all brain infected there can’t really be multiple tiers can there? if there are they’d surely be even worse right and even less smart i think.

@Omega – it is Ellen page, Ashley is the voice actor for the Ellie model is all, which is a bit weird since the models and characters in Uncharted were the VO actors fro their respective models.

+ LordRaoh on December 13th, 2011 at 9:38 pm said:

Hey Sony wake up. Don’t you own a video streaming service? Why are you not posting The Last of Us trailer through your own site since everyone going to the main website is getting the copyright error.

Or does the reveal trailer now belong to them?

Next time host your own reveal before or after the show on your own dime, screw viacom.

+ Feldinan on December 13th, 2011 at 11:32 pm said:

the the girl in the game its (Ellen Page) I think..

+ Crash15 on December 14th, 2011 at 7:32 am said:

@ Omega I said she looks like Ellen Page cause of her model. I didn’t say she voiced the character. Next time read before commenting others.

+ omega_alpha-619 on December 14th, 2011 at 10:30 am said:

No it is not Ellen Page, it was NOT modeled after her and if you think it was, prove it? You can’t so don’t bother trying or flaming me, because I don’t care and won’t be back to this Den of Tools to read your ignorant comments. Too many naive little kids and ignorant, delusional “adults” on this blog.

Using a end of the world with zombies or zombie-like enemies premise is kind of dissapointing but if the gameplay is good I’ll buy. i just wish the premise was a little more original or different than most of the stories out there. There is so much entertainment saturated with zombies set in post-apocalyptic worlds that it’s getting really old and played out.Seems like nobody can come up with a really good and original concept. The last really good exciting post-apocalyptic story was in The Matrix, but they ended up making that kind of uninteresting by the last movie too They started relying on long action sequences and special effects rather than good storytelling. I’m not saying I can come up with anything better, but I just wish someone would. Seems like entertainment these days is full of nothing but sequels and remakes and recycling old stories that have been told a million times already.

you know i remember quite clearly when the generation of consoles was in their second year and everyone kept bashing the PS3’s capabilities….or criticizing the console in one way or another, yet i stood by it and claimed that we would indeed see the PS3 with games that far outpace what we see on the crapbox, and here it is. AND this is just one of the many that will come and that are already here.

After seeing I am Legend, i have hoped that someone somewhere would make that perfect game, yet after left 4 dead, Dead Island and Dead rising i have been left completely underwhelmed. Due to the other games also being on the 360, the developers obviously just couldnt get the atmosphere right. I didnt care about the characters, the gameplay, or playing them at all for that matter.

Now, and go figure Naughty Dog would be the team that makes the game im sure many many people like me want, and the console that has the hardware to make it happen is the PS3.

I called it years ago just as i will call it now. This WILL be the game to own, and it will blow everyone away, now i just have to learn patience!!!!!
