PlayStation: The Official Magazine Outs 2012’s Hugest Games

It’s the start of the New Year and time for PTOM’s annual Hugest Games feature! With so many great games in the works, it was difficult to trim our list to a mere 14 titles. But it was even harder choosing the stars from that select company to grace our cover. In the end, we went with Ninja Gaiden 3’s Ryu Hayabusa, Mass Effect 3’s Commander Shepard, and DmC: Devil May Cry’s Dante because they simply looked totally badass together.

PTOM January 2012

We’ve also got new info on Hitman: Absolution, Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City, and the recently announced Rainbow 6: Patriots. And with PS Vita’s launch on the horizon, check out our hands-on impressions for a number of launch titles. And just for fun, our “Around the World in 96 Games” feature offers lessons in geography and culture based on information culled from PlayStation games. It’s everything you need to know about the world that you couldn’t be bothered to learn in school because you were too busy playing games.

PTOM also reflects back on the year that was 2011, looks to the future with some New Year’s resolution suggestions for Sony, and give our final verdicts on the last batch of games from this holiday season.

Some of our big reviews this issue are the highly anticipated Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim and Assassin’s Creed: Revelations, but it’s our head-to-head review feature for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 and Battlefield 3 that’s sure to inspire the most debate. We’ve already started receiving *ahem* heated comments from subscribers who have already received their issues.

Regardless of these occasional differences in opinion, though, it’s great to be part of the PlayStation family. So hug it out, peoples! And have a safe, prosperous, and happy New Year.

  • I forgot to ask. are you guys going to give away a 1yrs magazine subcription to a lucky gamer next yr.?

  • Is Ninja Gaiden 3 going to have Move Support? I thought I read that, but have heard jack since. :/

    • No further news about Move support. But we recently checked out the multiplayer and it is looking surprisingly awesome!

  • It’s a nice cover. I’m gonna go on record saying that you gave MW3 a higher score than BF3, which IS blasphemy if true.

Happy holidays to you PTOM staff!

    • Hoo boy. Nobody’s ever going to be happy when it comes to MW3 and BF3. Here’s my personal opinion: BF3 has better multiplayer. MW3 has better single player and good multiplayer. As a complete package, I gotta go with MW3. If I were only interested in multiplayer, I’d go with BF3.

  • Got my issue yesterday, it’s fantastic. I thought 2011 was a huge year for games but man looking through this 2012 is going to be a monster.

    • You know it. And we didn’t even get to include some games in the feature because companies were holding the info for the VGAs (grumble grumble). The Last of Us shoots to the top of my personal most wanted list!

  • At the Top of your Magazine it should say – PS3 / PSVita / PSP ;)
(but then again it’s not out yet in the US i suppose)

    • Yeah, I keep going back and forth on that. I see the reasoning, but visually, it’s nicely balanced the way it is because the PS3 and Vita fonts are similar and the PSP font isn’t. But maybe we’ll adjust it when the Vita launches.

  • Where’s Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time?

    • That’s what we asked Sony! Their response: “…” Our response: Can’t include it in the feature cause we got nothing to run.

  • To PTOM staff:

The Verge just came out with a definitive 11 page review of the PlayStation Vita. When can we expect to see yuor in depth review?

    • Yup, the Internet definitely has the jump on us with hands-on Vita coverage thanks to Japanese launch units. We’re definitely planning indepth coverage to coincide with the U.S. launch though. In the meanwhile, check out Vita coverage by our in-house web buddies, GamesRadar.com.

  • Awesome.

You guys really need to get a digital version of this magazine going so I can subscribe via my Nook Tablet. Make it happen guys!!!

    • Absolutely! We’re itching to deliver, but there’s nothing we can do until some business issues are worked out.

  • Grand Theft Auto 5 confirmed for 2012!?!? NICE!

    • Well, they didn’t actually confirm a 2012 release…but they didn’t NOT confirm it either. Let’s just we’re hopeful it’ll come out in 2012, but we also know that Rockstar does everything in their own sweet time.

  • Have very high hopes for PS Vita, GTA V, BioShock Infinite, and Max Payne 3.

Also hoping Just Cause 3 comes out next year!

    • OMG, as many triple A titles there are on the horizon, Just Cause has a special place in my heart. I will go insane if JC3 is on the way.

  • I hope that your magazine will do in-depth articles on Dust 514 and Mass Effect 3’s 4-player online co-op mode.

Is there a Google Android version of PTOM?

    • We’re definitely interested in more Dust 514 coverage, so stay tuned. As for ME3’s 4-player co-op, did you check out our preview on that mode in our Holiday 2011 issue?

There is currently no digital version of PTOM, but we are looking at all digital formats moving forward.

  • Hi Roger, got the january issue last week and it was a joy to read. I have 2 comments:

    1. You made a booboo in your preview of MGS Rising. You put, “Set between his surprise debut in MGS2 and badass revival in MGS4…”. The game is actually gonna be set many years after MGS4, due to storyline changes made by new MGS:R dev Platinum games. Though you most likely didn’t know that at press time.

    2. Thank you for that article about that bioshock infinite cosplayer. She looks so lovely as Elizabeth I want to marry her! :)

    • Yup, details were sparse as we went to press with the Jan issue. We’ve got more info coming in the Feb issue.

And yes, I’m crushin’ on BioShock Infinite’s Elizabeth–both virtual and real.

  • Have none of you heard about what the IGN poll results for MW3 vs. BF3 results are. BF3 won by a longshot in all 3 categories. Search it on youtube there are several videos from IGN and Battlefield.

    • I think all objectivity has gone out the window when it comes to MW3 and BF3 (at least on the Internet). I see numerous posts from people bashing one game and defending the other where they readily admit they haven’t played both games. One BF3 fan accused MW3 of having PS2 level graphics! C’mon that’s not even remotely rational!

  • Wow! Thanks for all the replies! Also, happy holidays to you! My question: Are you guys considering a digital version of the Playstation magazine? I am living in Japan now, so I bought an iPad to read western publications with ease, but a lot of my favorite magazines still aren’t supported.

  • Any news on call of duty 9? How about battlefield on ps vita? If no news, that’s fine. I’ll find out soon enough :) Merry Christmas and God bless you!

  • there should be a 3D review section now! all in all thx staff at PTOM for all the dedication and hardwork, happy holidays!

  • Hey Roger,

Any news on Final Fantasy Versus XIII. I just want something to be announced for that game. And I am still holding on to the hope that it will release in 2012!!!

  • Twisted metal and mass effect 3 will dominate the first of 2012 for me. Then I will go on hiatus until the last of us comes out :). K not really :P lmao

  • any word on when FFXIV will be ported to ps3?

  • Great update thanks

  • How come Dust 514 didn’t even get a mention?

  • I am so excited for The Last Of Us this game looks amazing.

  • I recently got this of the issues mag . =o)
