It’s Official: Netflix is Coming to PS Vita

As you may have heard during today’s Sony Electronics press conference at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, PlayStation and Netflix are teaming up again to bring tens of thousands of hours of movies and TV episodes from Netflix to the PS Vita for US customers.

The PlayStation 3 is of one the most popular devices for watching movies and TV shows streamed over the internet from Netflix. Now all those movies and TV episodes can be watched on PS Vita’s stunning high-def OLED front touch screen. The addition of Netflix streaming to PS Vita’s unique, powerful gameplay experiences gives users even more access and flexibility to the content they want, when they want it and where they want it.

Stay tuned for more exciting updates as we near the February 22nd launch of PS Vita!

  • Netflix + OLED = Bliss + unemployed

  • And Canadian customers too… right??

  • Nice! Since I won’t be able to afford a game (let alone a flash stick) at the time I purchase a new Vita here in Canada, I’ll need to do something on it! Hopefully Netflix? Might not even be available in Canada, or available without a flash stick D:

  • Sweet!!!! February 15th can’t get here fast enough!

  • Well yeehaw alert the media!! This is so worthy of a blog post!!

  • looks like i may have to start up netflix again when I get vita, would prefer vudoo but thats just me

  • Small problem: The 3G plan is horribly expensive.

  • Here we go, a guy in “Business Development”. Yay cool, 3G prices suck. But anyway:
    Posted elsewhere, still deserves answering:

Whats the delay on Ico/SotC digital, its been available on the UK store. Why isnt LBP2 Full game on the US store yet? Where are the good full games, like SCEE has..and also why is Motorstorm Apocolypse $59.99 when it’s £19.99 on the UK store? If anything check out the selection the UK store has of PS3 full games, its waaaay ahead of the efforts of SCEA..Sports Champions/Toy Story 3? Really? What about BF3? Deus Ex? Crysis 2? Deadf Island? etc etc. Look at the selection, why is SCEA lagging so far behind on Full PS3 games?

This will fall on “skipping this post” eyes I’m sure but ANY explanation would be nice..maybe even touch on those “psp remastered” classics, or heck why not address why, after all these years, Crisis Core was never released digitally. Because as it looks now, SCEE seems to know what ppl want and gives it to them.

But to add to the relevance of this thread, yay Netflix, 3G prices, 20MB limits..mem prices, system activation handicaps..yeah sounds great!!

  • Suhweet! That’s MEGA money considering the service just arrived today across the pond :)

  • Does this include Canadian customers as well? I don’t see why it wouldn’t as we have access to Netflix on all of our other devices such as PS3, iPad and others but just making sure.

    Thanks

  • Why can’t you guys improve the PS3 netflix UI?

  • Will the first edition ps vita’s little deviants be a full retail game or a downloadable?

  • oooo shiny…. now if only sony would release an amazon video app. my free student amazon video prime account is wasting away.

  • Sounds great! I’m looking forwards to this.

    And @11/BlooodyCow:

I believe that all of the Netflix apps, whether for PS3, a TV, or Xbox 360, are designed by Netflix itself. Go talk to them about it. I think that the PS3 Netflix app works fine. I just wish I could use my keypad when I search for things instead of typing with the onscreen keyboard.

  • Happy to see Netflix coming to the Vita!

Hopefully, Hulu Plus, Crackle, and HBO Go will be available as well shortly soon after.

Keep up the new features and software, Sony!!!

  • Sweet.
    :D

  • @qwertyuiop357
There is 3 difference UI for the netflix app on the PS3. Lets just say I have the worst of the three. I find the Netflix App that pre-installed on my Sony XBR HX929 to be much better than my PS3 one.

  • @8 Hmm…what *about* Dead Island? Do you think the game will feature significant differences from the last experience I attained, what, 3 months ago or something?

I mean, if I turn it on.

  • That’s cool and all, but really whats the point? you’ll watch a couple movies or shows over 3G and you’ve already reached your MB limit for the month. And there’s no point on watching it on Wifi because you’re supposed to be on the go with portables after all right?

  • I knew this was going to come to the Vita I just knew it!!! :)

  • meh. I’ve been wondering for a long time why the psp didn’t have Netflix on it. Now I know. Trying to sell some more vitas.

Way to catch up to the DS, guys. Still not buying one until the price gets real.

  • okay, that’s great and all, but when will the Netflix interface on the PS3 get on pace with EVERY OTHER platform out there? Let’s hope the Vita version will be better than the current PS3 version. And perhaps inspire a redesign of it.

  • what about Hulu , HBO GO, and youtube apps… we want this too

  • Yay? I’m sure I’ll use it as much as the Netflix client on my ipad – aka never.

  • Let’s be honest here: The 3G plans for A&T suck.

250 megs for 15 dollars, or 2 gigs for 25

I no doubt the plans up here in Canada would be no better.

Assuming the best I can get is 2 gigs a month why on earth would I ever get 3G plan if I want to use Netflix? Considering that 2 gigs is at most one movie or 2 episodes, assuming lowest picture quality, you will eat up your bandwidth within 2 hours or less.

The counter option is to use WiFi to watch my Netflix – this is a potential idea. Honestly, though, would you rather watch your favourite TV/Movie shows on Netflix on your Vita or on your big screen tv?

Now I am not saying Netflix on Vita is a bad idea – however it is unfortunately a victim of horrible data plans and better alternatives.

  • *I doubt the plans up here will be any better.

(I wish we could edit our posts)

  • What about CANADA? Please answer.

  • This is GREAT NEWS! Where is everyone getting the 3G plans? How much is it?

  • Another overpaid suit trying to sell my own content back to me. Ah well, at least you don’t work for apple.

  • SWEET! glad i never activated my free trial on my ps3!

  • Great news !

Keep bringing this stuff to the Vita and sales will increase.

@ 7 – MarkakaJin – The 3G may be overpriced, but I read that the Ipad 3G price is the same as the Vita….so it’s competitive.

  • I agree with #13, why no Amazon video app? I am a prime member and would love to use it to it’s full potential.

  • Now if only the PSP2 had HDMI out! They it would be possible to connect it to any TV anywhere — WITHOUT the burden of having to first buy, then remember, and finally bring a proprietary cable. Truly portable, you know?

  • Nobody going to mention Netflix’s increased price and how they lost many customers do to overseas ventures? Haha. I can only stream movies now and they are just now getting better with instant movies. I see the whole thing as their loss and their employees loss too. America needs to stop with outsourcing jobs and business on the level that it does. But go ahead and call me crazy even though you don’t know me.

  • This doesn’t surprise me at all seeing as how I have netflix on every electronic device I own.

    @33

The same component cable used for the pspgo can be used for the vita. My only issue with this is the multi out port will only allow you to either charge your vita, or connect it to your tv but not both at the same time.

  • OMG FIRST I WAS CONSIDERING IT BECAUSE OF UNCHARTED THEN I GOT EVEN MORE DRAWN TO IT BECAUSE OF MARVEL VS CAPCOM IT SEALED THE DEAL WITH CALL OF DUTY JUMPING ONTO THE NGP AND NOW NETFLIX TOO ? GOING TO PRE ORDER IT RIGHT NOW BTW YOU GET UNCHARTED FREE WHEN YOU DO THAT :) GUESS WHOO FEELS COOL NOW :) YEAH ME!!

  • Also if people in canada have netflix it shouldnt be a problem on the ps vita but if you dont im afraid no netflix for the communities canadian players

  • a new way for me to get in fired at work buying it day one thank you netflix and sony

  • If only mobile data wasn’t so overpriced. Guess this is cool for when you’re in a hotel room or in bed or something but the wifi restriction really hinders the usefulness of this feature.

Not really your fault since you don’t set mobile data rates but still a problem none the less.

  • I’m excited! :P

  • I was super excited for the PS Vita. Looking forward to it more then the ps3. Then I heard it was an AT&T exclusive with a TERRIBLE 3g plan. Who can afford to watch netflix and game on 2 gigs data. Thank you for the upset Sony. Disappointed in you for the first time. I will not be getting the Vita.

p.s. Why would you choose the LOWEST customer rated wireless provider as your partner. Your company deserves better after all the negativity you have been receiving in the media this past year.

  • @DeathJynx
You won’t be watching Netflix on that 2gb data plan anyway… or playing/downloading games online for that matter.
From what I understand, the 3G is primarily for the social networking apps. If you want to watch a streaming film, or download from PSN you’ll have to rely on good old fashioned Wi-Fi functionality.

  • this is cool indeed! and i know at some point it’ll be available to us here in Canada, hopefully day and date as well, but if not, even it it’s a week later who cares

  • Any news on Skype for Vita? I know images turned up online back in the Summer (from a Brazilian Sony presser, as I recall) and I know that Skype is owned by a certain rival company these days, but can we get an official word on whether it’s going to be available for Vita or not?
Netflix is a great move, though. For those complaining that it’ll eat into their 3G data plan – I don’t believe the 3G will actually work with Netflix. You’ll need Wi-Fi for that, which probably means no Netflix on the bus to work for you. However, if you live in a metropolitan area it’s hard to find anywhere *without* free Wi-Fi these days, so this is just a nice bonus for everyone with a Netflix account (which is probably anyone who is considering purchasing a Vita, anyway!)

  • @26, they will probably be through Rogers communications up here, so it will probably be pretty pricey! But at least Rogers is good with their customer service!

  • Youtube app ? google + app?

  • Just came to my ps3 so not sure what to think of this never even heard of netflix untill yesterday.

  • @fester420
No, there is NO video out on the vita, they want you to see the games on the beautiful OLED screen, not all pixelated on a 1080p big screen, the pixel density isn’t good enough on the vita to allow for video out to look good. not to mention it’s Sony’s way of not interfering with their own sales, if everyone wanted a portable and a home console, they’d be able to just buy the vita and the video out cable, and then avoid buying the ps3.

So yeah, check your facts! :p

  • Cool nice to see Netflix on it.

  • well i hope its better than watching netflix on my 3DS.
