Reality Fighters for PS Vita: Introducing Your Sensei, Mr. Miyagi

Reality Fighters is the Augmented Reality beat ‘em up coming exclusively to PlayStation Vita on March 13th in North America. As well as putting yourself into the game and going toe-to-toe against opponents of varied looks and styles, your in-game tutor will be the world’s most famous sensei: Mr.Miyagi! Players who persevere will be rewarded with the chance to play as Miyagi-san himself, and unlock his trademark handyman uniform and family headband.

Providing the voice of Mr. Miyagi is Jim Ward, a prolific gaming voice actor who has also performed in Call of Duty, Ratchet & Clank, Metal Gear Solid and more. Here are a few words from Mitsuo Hirakawa of SCE XDev Studio on the thinking behind this special guest appearance.

Q: Why did you decide to include Mr. Miyagi in Reality Fighters?

A: Mitsuo Hirakawa, Producer, SCE XDev Studio: Reality Fighters is a new kind of fighting game. Not only does it introduce Augmented Reality elements that allow players to put themselves in the game and fight in real-world environments, but the game also uses many exclusive PS Vita features like the rear touchscreen, sixaxis motion sensors and more. In addition to introducing players to the new hardware and unique gameplay, we wanted to create a mechanism for players to learn and develop throughout the game.

Eventually we decided that this mechanism should be a character who acted as the player’s guide. We specifically chose Mr. Miyagi for several reasons. Firstly, we needed someone who was a true fighting master who could easily take on the best fighters from around the world, but was also wise, and capable of teaching the player. Plus we had to consider the tongue-in-cheek nature of the game; some of our fight styles include ballet and break dance, as well as some unusual weapons like a toilet plunger. We needed someone who was tough, but also had a softer, more humorous side.

Q:What is his role in the game?
A: He is the sensei and guides we all know. He’ll teach players how to set themselves up as a character in the game, choose clothing and costumes, learn special moves and more, as well as giving encouragement before a bout and wise words whether the player is victoriou…or not so lucky!

Q: Did you consider any other famous names for the role of guide?
A: Before we decided on Mr. Miyagi, we shortlisted various characters such as Jackie Chan, Bruce Lee, Chuck Norris, Jet Li and even Mike Myers! It became clear that Mr. Miyagi ticked all the boxes for us in terms of a true master who has a humorous side. The Karate Kid movie being a worldwide hit and a film that we were all huge fans of also helped a little …

Q:What is your favorite Mr. Miyagi moment?
A: Like many fans around the globe, I grew up watching The Karate Kid and I must have seen the film more than 10 times! There are so many memorable moments I can recall like the Halloween fight scene, the Cobra Kai dojo fight scene … but my personal favorite is the “Miyagi vs. Kreese” moment. Kreese goes crazy and he starts beating up Johnny in the car park. Mr. Miyagi intervenes and has a one-on-one against Kreese. After Miyagi forces Kreese to his knees he says “Mercy is for the weak… when man confronts you, he is enemy…enemy deserve no mercy.” The audience expects Miyagi to deliver a fatal blow but instead he brings his fist to Kreese’s nose…and honks it.

This scene is a great example of who Mr. Miyagi really is – tough, wise, playful – and this is the character we have tried to bring to life in Reality Fighters.

Q:Noriyuki “Pat” Morita, the actor who played Mr. Miyagi, sadly passed away in 2005. Who provided the voice for this latest incarnation of the karate master?
A: We went through an extensive casting process and after meeting dozens of applicants we unanimously agreed that American voice actor Jim Ward was the most suited to this role.

We weren’t aware of Jim’s previous voice acting background when we decided to go with him, but his knowledge of how the voice files are played in game (when, where, how) really made a positive impact on the recording sessions. Jim’s been one of the best voice-over talents I’ve worked with and he has great experience having worked on Call of Duty, Metal Gear Solid, Ratchet & Clank and many more great titles.

From the moment we briefed Jim, he instantly ‘got’ the role so recording went really well, allowing us to capture over 500 lines.

  • will there be an online multiplayer demo ?

  • that’s pretty awesome, will this game use those cards like the soccer game? do all AR games use those?

    • Reality Fighters will give you the option to play with or without the AR Play Cards. Using the Play Cards enhances some features (e.g. you can zoom in and out on your brawl), but the game still fully functions without them for those of you who plan to battle on-the-go!

  • how much will it be?!! i will probably download this game but depending on the features right now i think it’s worth from $10-$20.

  • Too soon!

Well, maybe not since as you point out he died back in 2005. Just feels wrong, especially if players start adding Brandon Lee or David Carradine characters for him to fight with. ;)

  • augmented reality is a selling point for me when it comes to this portable fighter, cant wait to fight on a pizza lol

  • PLEASE Market the Vita, nobody knows it even exists. You can walk up to a random person and they won’t know what the heck you’re talking about. It’s making me sad and it’s the reason why the Vita may not do as well as everyone hopes. :(

  • I second that, more Vita tv promo EVERYWHERE US and CANADA.
The lack of tv publicity on the major networks really hurts the playstation brand.
Likewise, it is a recipe for success of Apple and they make BILLIONS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

TV promotion is the most effective way to promote your products, keep sending free trailers online, that helps but you’ll need a good 400 million $ promotion on tv publicity.
CBS, ABC, NBC, FOX, Spike, MTV, etc.
On Canada; CBC, CTV, Much Music, YTV, etc
Quebec “french” has millions of clients; TVA, V, Music Plus, Vrak TV.

At least theses channels will cover a wide area of audience.

  • I heard that Final Fantasy Type-0 is coming to the US on the Vita.
They are to add trophy support and second analog control.

If that’s the case, while you’re at it, why not make the menus accessible via touchscreen with the option of using buttons. I’ve played Eternal Legacy on tablet and it feels so natural.
It’s faster to input commands than with buttons.
(with buttons, you have to move with analog or digital buttons and then press x to select, with touchscreen, you just press to select)

They could also change the ‘camera’ view angle using the rear touchpad instead of the second analog stick, also as optional like Drake’s Uncharted “play the way you like” motto.

They could have functions for the front and back cameras.
But multi-player options would be much appreciated, two vitas could work side-by-side in ad-hoc or infrastructure mode (Wifi/3G) in co-op story mode, 1 player controls certain characters, the other controls other characters, etc.

  • A versus mode could also be in place. That way, if another Dissidia is on it’s way on Vita, Square-Enix could get some feed-back on what they can do to improve their online experience that currently doesn’t exist beyond ffxi and ffxiv. (Dissidia in Japan only)

  • I think you guys should give Jim Ward more credit than just video game voices. He’s also done voices on various cartoons, like Fairly OddParents.

  • Easily one of the best games at the Vita Club, and Miyagi plays a big role in that! I’m not even a huge fan of his (90’s kid here), but his implementation into this game was pitch perfect. Him combined with all the augmented reality tech was what really set this game apart from the rest of the Vita launch titles.

  • And its true, Vita is huge with all of us in the community who knows about it, but everyone else is oblivious to it. And IF they even knew about it, they think its just another PSP. Sad sad sad, really needs some marketing and exposure.

  • While this looks interesting I have spent too much on the Vita already. It’s not even out yet!

  • Did somebody say Jim Ward? He is on a daily morning radio show here in Los Angeles & he is the funniest guy ever. I didn’t even know he did video games until I saw him as a credit on the Hobbit game.

I know Jim will be a great Miyagi. He regularly does a Kim Jung Il impersonation that is so funny it makes me cry but as over the top as it is, it’s not the least bit ethnically insulting. If you haven’t heard it, make him do it for you @ the SCEA offices.

Oh, & Jim is a Bruin like me, so doubly OK.

  • This is one of mine and my friends day one buys for sure!

  • TO SONY / playstation vita developers :
sony is promoting the ps vita to be the Ultimate connected handheld device and indeed the system is very powerful and has full psn integration so why limit it ? i mean its like having a ps3 on your hands so why not releasing multiplayer online demos ? how about Resistance burning Skies beta? uh ? how about that? you want the vita to be the ultimate multiplayer online console to own well there you have it , how about Call of Duty beta? How about Little Big Planet online multiplayer demo ? wipeout 2048 , Reality Fighters online multiplayer demos ? how about that?

we dont want just online leaderboards , challenges , notifications , sure they are all nice and all but we want full psn integration some games dont even support head to head multiplayer online racing lol , even other companies with old technology do that so whats up with that ?

  • Pfft… ask 99% of random people on the street about any *UNRELEASED HARDWARE* and they won’t know what it is. Good grief people. No one knew wtf a 3DS was before it was out and many still don’t understand it’s not a DS with 3D slapped on it.

That’s how random people work. They’re ignorant of these things. They’re simple. What they know hardly matters. Most don’t and won’t have any interest in a dedicated handheld at all.

  • – A LOYAL SONY CUSTOMER (Avid PS3 & PSP user and consistent PSN spendah’!!!)

IF there is absolutely NO PSN digital download discount for VITA games (when I check on the 14th). THEN I will immediately cancel my VITA preorder & save for the NextBox…Sad to say, but it is the ONLY manner in which I will be able to voice an audible opinion on such greedy tactics. Hoping for continued symbiosis…

  • Best Miyagi moment is when catch fly with chopstick.

I have an iPhone and yes it’s cool. I’m using it to type this rIght now. However it cannot play “real” games like Vita can. The games a from $0-$5 for a reason. That’s all they’re worth. And if Sony didn’t buy at least one 30 second spot during the super bowl then their advertising dept needs a good firing. Talk about exposure; that’s one billion viewers worldwide. I hope they do something rather than rest on their reputation like usual.

On topic, I’m buying this for sure. I’m glad you all took the simpler version and blew it up to a full experience with powers and unlockables, etc. Looking good!

  • How deep are the mechanics in this game? Or is it just a masher?

  • Model needs work. Its right arm is doing some crazy stuff around the shoulder in that punching still.

  • I’m guessing that if this hack is voicing one of the greatest movie characters of all time then Pat Moritia wanted too much money………

  • Will there be a demo? I think that the AR features are really neat, but the gameplay doesn’t catch my attention when I could get UMvC3, Skullgirls or Streetfighter X Tekken for PS3/PS Vita.

  • KingDubin,

Pat Morita died back in 2005. Fail. ;) Oh, and this “hack” is a well respected voice actor in gaming and television…read the comments, apparently he has quite a following. I know I have heard his name numerous times before this.

  • This game is getting more and more interesting. The launch of the Vita and these games are so close. Market this thing. 3 words…..Super Bowl Commercial!!! We also need more videos. Show Pat Morita character in a video showing training and customization. BTW, Pat Morita IMO does fit perfect for this role and the game.

  • a must have for the VITA

  • @21
It is a very Casual fighter, you wont see any tournaments come out of this. BUT, it does so many things that other fighters (Marvel, SF x Tekken, Skullgirls, etc.) just simply dont do, and is probably the best piece of tech to both enjoy and show off for the Vita. Its like the Sports Champions of the Vita. I highly recommend at least trying a demo (assuming they release one) even if your only into hardcore competitive fighting games. This game can still be very competitive as long as the atmosphere is kept fun and light, instead of seriously, like the first Mortal Kombat game. It’ll deliver good laughs for sure too. Imagine seeing yourself towering over a defeated friend.

  • Can you finish guys off with a nose honk?

  • where do i pre order to get Mr. Miyagi

  • i mostly go to game stop to get my games but if Mr. Miyagi is not there for the players who get persevere for him i will go to where he is at

  • i cant wait…..this is one of the games i want…
