The Drop: Week of February 6th 2012 New Releases

Sports! Apparently there’s a huge sporting event happening today? I’m not sure, something about Giants from New York? Anywho, I’m rooting for Mecha Godzilla.

The Drop this week is nearly as big as Super Bowl XLVI, with a massive blow-out of PS3 Blu-rays, PSN digital releases and a PS2 classic. Speaking of classics, the Jak and Daxter Collection arrives this week on Blu-ray as a full packaged HD triple-combo, or single jabs as individual purchases on PSN.

Also, it was a pleasure joining the stage with David Jaffe and members of Eat Sleep Play last Thursday at the Twisted Metal community event, where we raffled tons of prizes and booed each winner onto the stage. A big thank you to PlayStation fans that made it out and turned it into an amazing experience!

Hit the jump and bask in the glory of over ten PlayStation games on this week’s The Drop.

PlayStation 3

The Jak and Daxter Collection — The Jak and Daxter Collection features all three best-selling PlayStation 2 classic hits — Jak and Daxter, Jak II and Jak 3 — fully remastered in high definition and stereoscopic 3D. This collection follows fan-favorite Jak and his sidekick Daxter through a series of action-packed adventures. The Jak and Daxter Collection blends action, shooting, driving, and platforming into one complete PS3 package.

  • JAK AND DAXTER: (Available on PSN) While exploring some ancient ruins on a forbidden island off the coast, Jak’s best friend, Daxter, is knocked into a vat of Dark Eco–a terrifying and deadly substance that could corrupt the world forever — transforming him into a weasel-like rodent. The village sage, Samos Hagai, tells Jak that there’s only one person who holds the secrets to transforming Daxter back. Now the pair must set out on a quest in search of a wise old sage who has the power to restore Daxter to his former self.
  • JAK II: (Available on PSN) In this darker themed follow-up to Jak and Daxter, hero Jak tries to control the dark eco injected into his system and, with his sidekick Daxter, attempts to thwart the tyrannical powers ruining Haven City. Players earn the chance to wield four heavy-duty weapons, they can jack any vehicle in the massive open city, and they have a chance to use a jetboard to navigate special platform levels.
  • JAK III: (Available on PSN) Jak and his faithful companion Daxter are exiled to the unforgiving wasteland, where survival of the fittest is the law of the land. But deadly lands and dangerous creatures are only the beginning. Soon, the worst nightmare imaginable finds Jak’s world, threatening to annihilate all life with eternal darkness… This third chapter offers an exciting new open world that stretches from the farthest reaches of the wasteland to the strife-torn heart of the city.

Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning — An open-world action RPG, Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning is set in Amalur, a rich and deeply immersive world underpinned by 10,000 years history, created by 22 time New York Times bestselling author, R.A. Salvatore. Immersing players in a rich, living, breathing open-world dripping with magic and rife with danger, underpinned by strong storytelling, Reckoning lets players define their destiny as they engage in intense action combat while exploring the huge, vibrant and varied world of Amalur as envisioned by the visionary creator of Spawn and acclaimed artist, Todd McFarlane.

Designed by open-world RPG legend Ken Rolston, Reckoning offers players unparalleled choice in a world of infinite possibility. Together, the visionaries and development team behind Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning are creating a game that aims to forever change the RPG genre.

The Darkness II — The Darkness II takes players down a brutal and personal path as Jackie Estacado, wielder of The Darkness — an ancient and ruthless force of chaos and destruction. Based on the supernatural horror comic book series created by Top Cow Productions, Inc., The Darkness II breaks out of the sea of conventional first-person shooters with its fervid Quad-Wielding gameplay, which will allow players to slash, grab, and throw objects and enemies with their Demon Arms while simultaneously firing two weapons. The game is layered with the use of dark versus light, steeped in deep and twisted storytelling, and engulfed in stylistic violence that is visualized through a hand-painted graphic noir technique that stays true to its comic book origins.

It’s been two years since Jackie Estacado, now the Don of the Franchetti crime family, used The Darkness to kill the men responsible for his girlfriend’s murder. He’s been unable to shake the memory of Jenny’s death since bottling up his supernatural power, and now The Darkness wants out. A sudden, unprovoked attack on Jackie’s life heralds the start of a full-scale mob war, which has clearly been orchestrated by some outside force. The botched attempt opens the door for The Darkness to reemerge, and sets Jackie on a journey to hell and worse, as he unravels the mystery behind the attack and the motivations of The Darkness itself.

Shank 2 expands on the original game’s amazing visuals and combat system to redefine the 2D side-scrolling brawler.

Posing as amateur vigilantes or villains, gamers will create their very own Bats and Jokerz characters using unprecedented customisation options including insane costumes, homebrewed gadgets and a wide range of traditional and imagined weapons. The game features maps and modes inspired by DC Comics’ Batman license.

Trouble is, she’s starting to talk about long-term commitment, something Vincent’s spent his entire life avoiding. Since romantic complications are the last thing he wants to deal with, Vincent meets his friends for their regular night of drinks. Little does he know that he’s about to be blindsided by a beautiful, seductive, irresistible freight train named Catherine. Suddenly, he’s hung over in bed next to the most beautiful woman he’s ever seen, unsure about the previous night’s events. Was it just making out, he wonders, or did something more serious happen between them? Should he tell Katherine? Will he ever see Catherine again? Vincent’s about to find that a stumble on the staircase of love can turn into a horrific, fatal plummet…

  • Still no Legend of Dragoon? I am highly disappointed Sony. When will you LISTEN to your consumer base and give the people what they want?

  • sponge bob :P

  • Are you kidding me? Sponge Bob Square Pants? Where is KILLZONE!! >:(

  • Didn’t Inversion get pushed back?

  • lol ya people think he going to respond they wont

    • I may not respond all the time. But I do read every comment. You guys do a great job of catching my errors and fact checking everything. The Drop organically changes every Sunday afternoon, thanks to you guys!

  • Give us the ps2 titles we want.

  • This update needs more cow bell.

    And bacon.

  • Hey, Sony. See my first post? It’s number one.

    I know you saw it.

    So answer my question.

    Where. Is. Legend of Dragoon?

  • THIS WAS A GREAT UPDATE lots of cool games and love the expanding ps3 full game lineup!! always wanted to try the jak games AND

    SPONGE BOB!!!!!

  • Speaking very honestly, the Playstation 2 classic Killzone was promised two weeks ago. It missed its date and I’ve been hoping it will be released soon. Two weeks on, and the only PS2 classic we get is Spongebob? Way to drop the ball on that. Where is the PS2 classic and why did it miss its release date?

  • ::Looks at 20 dollars, looks at the drop offering for PS2 Classics, looks at 20 dollars….. places 20 dollars in wallet and walks away:::

  • GIMMIE KILLZONE!!!!!!!

  • Can’t wait for The Simpsons arcade game, looks like another one of my ideas on blog share came true. and YES, I KNOW THE PRICE IS $10 which is fine by me.

  • According to GameStop, Inversion comes out on June 30th.

    http://www.gamestop.com/ps3/games/inversion/90107

  • also whoever is in charge, can they go over at least my ideas on blog share and check them off as being in action i.e. Parasite eve 1 and 2 psone classics, the simpsons arcade game, and another or 2 (can’t remember at the top of my head)

  • Also, METACRITIC says that Inversion releases 30 days from now.

  • rey, no word yet on the rainbowmoon game?

  • It’s nice to finally see some PS2 classics again, I have some hopes for a few games I would love to play again… Namely Dragon Quest VIII, Soul Calibur III, Okami and perhaps Katamari Damacy. But I must admit… A SpongeBob SquarePants game based on a movie seems like an odd pick. At least Soul Calibur II or III would have been nice to see to coincide with the release of SC-V last week. That’s just beyond random.

  • I thought Inversion was delay to May or something? and what happen to Rock of Ages?

  • I want jRPG on PS2 Classic please!

  • I love SpongeBob!!!!! How about Jak X as a PS2 classic?

  • omg killzone finally!!! oh wait its just a spongebob game. :(

but for real you guys need to get the lead out on some of the good games so get out and talk to some of the devs and get them to place some games up

  • Seriously? Spongebob? Spongebob. We’ve been waiting weeks, if not months for a new PS2 Classic title, something from the vast catalog of the Playstation 2 lineup that many players would love to be able to play again and have been requesting for ages, and you give us SPONGEBOB!? Normally I’ll support some of the more obscure, outta-left-field titles you guys put on the store, but THIS? Come on!

  • um not to sound like a punk but

Inversion was pushed to March…not Feb..

  • Here is a list of PS2 games I want to see on the PS Store:

-Crash Bandicoot: The Wrath of Cortex (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crash_Bandicoot:_The_Wrath_of_Cortex)
    -Crash Twinsanity (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crash_Twinsanity)
    -Jak X: Combat Racing (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jak_X)
-All the Ratchet and Clank games, or just make an HD collection for them.

  • I agree with @20. how about Jak X as a PS2 classic

  • Quit asking for Killzone when its nothin but a lame, half re-heated bunch of BS. Killzone deserves a full on HD upgrade like GoW. Anything else is simply an insult.

  • @20 @25 Yeah, don’t even think about making an HD collection of Jak X, Daxter, and J&D The Lost Frontier.
Daxter was good on PSP, but I don’t think it should be in an HD collection. The Lost Frontier just sucked. That leaves Jak X as a game that should be ported on PS3 or just remade in HD by itself.

Also, when remaking Jak X, make sure to make the online work. It would be even better if it was made for PS3’s PSN.

  • any plan to make digital copies of uncharted 1-3 or heavy rain on the psn

  • I would very much like to see the .hack//Infection, mutation, outbreak, and quarantine games on the store eventually, as well as the PSOne Classic of Ape Escape. Also for all the games to be playable on the PS Vita. Other PSOne Classics i would like to see are Jersey Devil, Legend of Legaia, Gekido, Sled Storm, Digimon world 1 & 3, Dragon Valor, Croc, and Ace Combat 3 Electrosphere.

I pre-ordered the First Edition bundle and would love to have some of these games to buy/play when i get it or shortly after. I know a lot of people want to see the .hack games as well as the .hack//G.U. games on the network as well.

And as per everyone asking about the Legend of Dragoon to be on the network, I must voice my desire to see that game as well. Even though i have the actual disks for it, i would love to see this game on the network so i could have it on the go as well.

I can understand that there is a lot of legal work to do in order to get the games on the network, but i would love to see them on there and am merely throwing this out there as little more than something for you to think about and I hope to see at least some of these games come to the PS Store.

Thank you for taking the time to read this and have a good day.

  • @DuffBeerLight The Uncharted games are too big to be downloaded. Not sure about Heavy Rain.

  • After some long months, Rey is finally responding our comments once again.

  • Nice, cant wait for the simpsons arcade, hope someday the simpsons game (2010) will be on the PSN too

    Whats the price for catherine?

  • I’ll be picking up The Darkness 2 and Shank 2 this Tuesday and next will be Playstation Vita and Twisted Metal! February is already looking like a kickass month for Playstation!

    • Our PlayStation Vita launch line-up is insane! Are you picking up a First-Edition bundle? Or grabbing a Vita on the 22nd, like a “normal.”

  • here is my list of what i want on here some time

    PS1
    Fear Effect
    Fear Effect 2
    koudelka
    Lunar
    Lunar 2

    PS2
    Persona 3 FES
    Persona 4
    Nocturn
    DDS 1
    DDS 2
    Devil Summoner 1
    Devil Summoner 2
    Shadow Hearts 1-3

  • Are the Jak and Daxter games coming to the Vita as well? If we buy the PS3 digital versions, will those also work on Vita when it comes out?

  • Very good!

But please sony, we want rpg’s in ps2 classics!!!!! Kingdom Hearts 1 and 2!!! Dragon Quest VIII!! Tales of the Abyss!!!! Rogue Galaxy!! Magna Carta!!

  • Hey Rey, Inversion is NOT dropping this tuesday. Sorry buddy. It was pushed back again.

  • Ow, i forgot one incredible game, Mega Man X Collection!!!!!

  • oh and speaking of megaman how about them Legends games

  • PEOPLE SERIOUSLY STOP NAGGING AND BIT**ING ABOUT LEGEND OF DRAGOON SERIOUSLY. JEEZ YOU PEOPLE DONT KNOW WHEN TO LEAVE STUFF ALONE. THEY HAVE A PLAN FOR EVERYTHING SO STOP.

  • Simpsons Arcades is by far the best thing on this update. I remember spending countless hours playing it at my local arcade. I bought it on xbox, plus im getting it on the ps3 from ps+ (finally getting things i enjoy from this program, hope its not the last)

Again though nothing for us Psp users. again i would assume with the Vita almost here (10 days) i would assume they would be pushing some classic psp games, but i guess not. So sad too. one would think some people never got to enjoy the psp library, and Sony could have done something for that by release all their classic games like Crisis Core, Kingdom Hearts, etc. But like with everything else they dont care for their costumers. Still ill enjoy the Vita for what its worth, but judging by their lack of ads for a new system it seems they (Sony) doesnt care about it as well just like the Vita.

  • hey rey! can you please give the price and the download file size for Gotham City Impostors & Catherine!
    thanks.

  • Why does the UK/Europe store have more Full PS3 Games (digital) available for down? They have Rayman Origins (really cheap), Sonic Generations , Battlefield 3, Fifa 12, Deus Ex : Human Revolution, they’ve had LEGO Pirates of the Caribbean and many many more games….Why aren’t those games made available here in the US?!

  • Thanks Rey for the update!
Never got a chance to try Jak and Daxter last gen so looking forward to that. And then there is Gotham City Imposters. the game that has been taking up my whole week. So much fun and is not too hard like other FPS games *cough MAG cough*.

I really appreciate all the time and hard work you guys do in your extremely busy days to update all us loyal fans. Keep up the amazing work guys!

  • Waiting for Fahrenheit to come to the store

  • Hi, Rey Gutierrez.

When Final Fantasy 4 PSOne Classic version will be appear in PSN ?

    Please :)

  • The Jak and Daxter Collection <3 Can't wait for Feb 7th! I'm getting the collection as my main birthday present =D. I LOVE Jak and Daxter and I was one of the many people who supported the release of the collection. On the topic of PS2 classics, could you consider re-releasing Magic Pengel: The Quest for Color as a PS2 classic? Also it's sequel, Graffiti Kingdom? It's becoming hard to find and is considered by many to be 1 of the biggest hidden gems for PS2. I already submitted the idea to the share portion of the blog.

  • Good: Catherine. Nice to have AAA weird Japanese games on the PSN.
Not good: Only SpongeBob as a PS2 Classic? Seems like a joke.

  • Pre-ordered Kingdoms of Amalur today, pretty excited for that.

Can’t wait for my free copy of Simpsons Arcade as well. <3 PS+
