PS3 System Software Update (v4.10)

Eric Lempel's Avatar Posted by on Feb 07, 2012 // SVP, PlayStation Network

Hi, everyone. We are releasing a new system software update (v4.10) for PlayStation 3 today that will include a few minor changes that we want to make you all aware of.

First off, once you download the new system software, you will be asked to accept a change to our Terms of Service. In an effort for more unity between PlayStation Network (PSN) and other Sony Entertainment Network services, your “PSN Account” will now be named “Sony Entertainment Network Account.” Please note that this change is one in name only and will not change the PSN that you know and love. You’ll still play games online, still have access to the latest downloadable games and add-ons, and still experience a wide variety of movies, sports and music across PSN.

With this system software update (v4.10), we’ll also be updating the PS3 Internet Browser with improved display speed.

You can find more details after the firmware goes live here. We look forward to your feedback in the comments below.

Any word on whether or not we’ll ever see an update to the PSX emulation software on the PS3?

It’s been years and still no ingame-XMB, and it’s lacking functions that even the PSP has, such as faster read speeds, and remapping controls around.

ok wipeout 2048 is $35.99 , Modnation racers road trip is $26.99 , why Uncharted golden abyss digital version is $49.99 ? it should be cheaper come on

the browser update may be nice, but at least let us stream videos in 720P on youtube.. i think its sad that the PS3 cant do that, but it can stream HD shows off of Netflix just fine. please think about this before releasing an updated browser that really did nothing for us.

+ TUSTIN1 on February 7th, 2012 at 7:40 pm said:

Is there a way to turn off the prompt that keeps asking if I want to run the damn plugin every time I click on ANYTHING?

Hey Eric
with all Sony’s genius, how come they don’t allow us to have 2 ACTIVE PS’3s? I have an orig. 60gb and a newer PS3 Slim. Since we register BOTH PS3’s on the Sony site, and you know of our registered physical addresses, along with the IP addresses, it shouldnt be penalizing us for spending a boat load of money too Sony.

I have a new PS3 slim in my bedroom where i play all my games, watch movies etc… My niece and nephew were over and wanted to watch a movie on the PSN, but I couldnt since that PS3 is in my room.

Why cant the genius’ at Sony, figure out a way where we CAN have both PS3’s in our homes, at the registered mailing address that you have on file that allows us to DOWNLOAD and watch any movies on EITHER PS3, without, having to Deactivate or reactivate either PS3?

Thank You Sir,
Eddie ” Haskell420″ the Master BETA’r

the browser froze on me the first try when i tried to search for a tv show on a site search bar. didn’t show that it was loading and when i pressed the PS button it wouldn’t do anything only when i held it, it gave me the option to shutdown the system or controller and when i shut it down it would take a while then beep like when you force it to shutdown by holding the button. I’m still trying right now, but it’s still freezing, i tried using google search and it worked so i don’t know what the problem is, i never had this happen before.

you guys should partner up with Mozilla or Google so they can make a better browser

also when are we going to get a better GUI?

+ JEC94 on February 7th, 2012 at 7:46 pm said:

We also need XMB support when watching dvd or blu-ray movies and when playing PS1 games please. Is stupid that you have to be offline!

HURRAY !! Another update that is all but completely useless !!!

It’s like they enjoy wasting their time, and our time.

But the joke is still on me, because I’m not gonna jump ship to an X box or a Wii or 3DS cause.

You guys are scaring me with all of these bug reports. There’s still time for me to cancel the update. What should I do? The one guy that can’t turn his ps3 on really got me.

Does the PSN name and logo on the XMB change to the SEN name and logo?

Plus,I was not asked to accept a change to Terms of Service after downloading the update.

+ GT_168 on February 7th, 2012 at 8:10 pm said:

I like this……just wish I could still call it PSN. Now how am I going to search news on google about PSN? Public Service Network was bad enough bumping heads with it but now I’ll have to deal with Senators? Oh well, guess I’ll just use the blog more, its just my lame iPod doesn’t handle ps blog very well.

Hey, thanks for the browser update! So far so good but I haven’t tried HD video on YouTube yet.

HOWEVER I have one simple request —

PRETTY PLEASE!!!! The PS3 is supposed to be a home entertainment system… it just now got its act together in regards to displaying websites like Google and YouTube (hint hint) and that’s something my WebTV could’ve done 15 years ago!

DO IT!! Pandora Radio built into the PS3 so I can do other stuff in the background. I can’t leave Pandora open in a browser window and switch to another window and still listen while browsing…

don’t get too excited people , the supposed new and improved ps3 browser is still not workable

I spent 10 minutes trying previously unusable sites and they still are unusable , some that STILL do not work are

ps blog , ps forums , ps support , this is inexcusable in my opinion but you still cannot even sign in on these sites using the ps3 browser , only read the pages is you can load them ( FORUMS still can’t load past the initial page of any post , replies are not loading )
e-mail client hotmail or msn mail unusable still , as is sign in on you tube

yahoo mail actually worked to sign in but the browser is unsupported so although you can sign in you cannot read mail or send via yahoo

several others , all sites that require sign in to post on the site are unusable still via ps3

yes , it loads a but faster os sites it always could load , big fat deal , that’s nothing to brag about as the big new feature in the browser , must be just a way to get everyone to accept new t.o.s. easily

+ Kchow23 on February 7th, 2012 at 8:16 pm said:

Hopefully the browser keeps being improved on..

Hey Eric,

Could you please pass on this small addition to the firmware team, since the PS3 is looking like it won’t be getting supported with updates too much longer unless it has to do with Vita Compatibility (Which is appreciated by the way) Anyways though please add…

– Add Shuffle Pictures & Video’s
– Add Playlists under Video
– Add Sleep Timer to Music & Video’s

I’m glad the web browser is finally getting some attention, hopefully it will fix all the freezing problems as I’ve had to hard reset my PS3 more times using the web browser than I’ve ever had to with games

The only other things I could as for more after you add the above in is more Visualizations for the Music and better Remote Play compatibility but the most important things are the things I mentioned above, please get those in before the PS3 is no longer supported with firmware updates.

“Sony is just putting more limitations on us like every other update for the last 2 years.” Limitations? Are you really serious! What limitations are they doing with this update. All they’re doing is allowing 1 centralized username and password for all sony services. It’s about damn time, as Blizzard has done this for years.

“please fix the PSOne classic system. the graphics look terrible” It’s a PSOne titles, what kind of graphics are you expecting? Uncharted 2? Really these comments are baffling.

+ xxnike629xx on February 7th, 2012 at 8:28 pm said:

Oh? Finally an update for the PS3…?!

Why does it feel like a miracle each time the PS3 gets an update. Anyway, it’s cool that you guys are finally improving the horrible browser, but I actually just use the PS3 to play games, ya know? =D

I have the computer for browsing the Internet. I’m sure that there are more things here and there that you guys improved with this firmware update. I’m just glad that we finally got a new firmware though. It was about time…=D

Anyway, please continue to work on making the PS3 better, and please support the PSP. I really hope that you guys can get the US God Eaters 2 as well as a remastered release of Final Fantasy III, Final Fantasy V, and Final Fantasy VI before calling nit quits for the PSP.

The Vita is great and all, but I don’t want that many games for it aside from Uncharted Golden Abyss, Resistance Burning Skies, and Ninja Gaiden Sigma Plus…. So I will be buying the games, but not the system quite yet. Besides, the system is still a little expensive and those memory cards are just too expensive as it is. I’m sure that in a year or so later, you guys will improve the hardware, improve the quality of the memory cards, and lower the price on it all.

I downloaded the new UPDATE, and now my PS3 turns on with a black screen. I attempted the “safe” start and still nothing! What happened here??!!!

+ Kanon_of_Gemini on February 7th, 2012 at 8:32 pm said:

You know what we really need…. private chat, and cross over chat between games, that would be awesome. that is the ONLY thing that I envy from xbox360

Hey don’t chnage the DASHBOARD, I mean if it aint broken why fix it?, I love the XMB, the way it is, lets you acces to all you movies , pictures games etc in an easy way, as well it lets you have a wallpaper of your choice and you actually can see it while you’re browsing in the XMB, it is cool the way it is, actually I kind of hope that the PS Vita lets you choose between the new bubble DASHBOARD, and the classic XMB, that’ll be cool.

+ altered_beasst on February 7th, 2012 at 8:36 pm said:

Ignore, I stripped my whole system down (meaning the surround, amp, hdmi’s etc… and its now working…. must of been a coincidence that it stopped at same time.

Was like huh? Was logged out?

Then I came back it had firmware!

I was like YES!

Only I seem to be really excited about the firmware updates.

You know what would have been a nice change along with the rebranding of SEN? Allowing users who are over the age of 18 to grow up. We were honest with our age when we signed up PSN under the age of and this is what we get, to be treated like a kid forever technically?
