The Pop Culture Secrets of Worms: Ultimate Mayhem

Worms: Ultimate Mayhem is being released later today on PlayStation Store for PS3. In contrast to the Worms games released on PSN to date, Ultimate Mayhem is a 3D version of the crazy turn-based strategy series, being a “best of” compilation of the most memorable bits of Worms 3D and Worms 4: Mayhem. The game is crammed with surreal weaponry, wacky customization options, tons of destructive single-player content and multiplayer options, Trophies, and some really cool improvements to the original games. We also added enhancements and updates to the camera, the graphics, the audio and the aiming especially.

To celebrate today’s new release, we thought it may be fun to reveal some of the many pop culture secrets that can be found within the levels and content. The game is packed to its destructive core with some affectionate, and sometimes surreal, film and pop cultural references, all scattered amongst the numerous themes and landscapes. Here are just a few that we really like — see if you can spot more! (We don’t make any apologies for the terrible puns contained below!):

Destruct and Serve

Let’s party like it’s…err… 1955! Jump back in time with an iconic time-traveling car and also enjoy the town hall inspired by a scene from a very popular 1980s classic!

Nice to Siege You

It may be Ork-less but this map is still very much in the vein of a famous siege battle scene from a notable fantasy trilogy, complete with walls, catapults and destructible weak spots. Relive the classic battle with worms…or just blow each other up with explosive sheep!

D-Day

Storm the beach in this silly spoof of the thrilling opening sequence of a critically acclaimed World War II pic!

Plaice Holder

From a familiar-sounding boat, to an aquatic predator with a canister in his mouth all the way through to a sunny beach poster, this level has plenty of jaw-dropping references to a 70s classic blockbuster!

Tree Trouble Village

Head up to the tops of the trees in this cute sci-fi village and see if you can spot the references. Maybe you can use the force to gain an unfair advantage?! That is the ‘Endor’ of the references, and I will stop ‘Jabba-ing’ on now…..

  • I got all the references from the pics. :-) I’m going to pick this up as soon as I recover from the Vita. The Helms Deep pic looks incredible by the way.

    • The team promised me they’d be by first thing in the AM (British time) to answer your questions! They’re going to bed now but they’ll be back soon.

    • Thanks for the kind words, glad to hear you liked the references and the LOTR visual in particular – hope you enjoy the game when you pick it up!

  • Will there be a demo for this as well?

  • Any chance we’ll see Worms hitting the PS Vita?

  • I’ll bring some questions posted on “Worms Ultimate Mayhem Obliterates PSN on 14th FEB”, I hope Mark Baldwin answer some of them:

“I hope you have improved your servers =/
It was very frustrating playing Worms 2: Armageddon online.”
The servers for multiplayer online gaming is good and improved? or the same “level” that is the Worms 2 Armageddon?

    “So, WTH is “loyalty content”?”

“was the audio re-encoded with modern codecs (AAC, Ogg, FLAC) at decent sample samples (16-bit/44khz)? any surround support for those awesomely huge explosions?”

The ranked matches will have delay for team weapons? because I did read in some forums that some players use the team weapons on the first “move” and screw up all the game…

Thank You! I’ll buy the game when it appears on the Ps Store… Btw, what’s the exactly time that ps store updates? I’m anxious!

    • Hi – please see below:

      1) Online – with regards to Worms Ultimate Mayhem it has certainly undergone a lot of testing pre-launch, and we will monitor consumer feedback and comments as they play it online to see if there are any emerging issues.

      2) Loyalty content – sure, this is special content for anyone who owns either Worms, Worms 2: Armageddon or any of the Alien Breed games on PSN. If a user has bought any of these games, this unlocks some nice themed in-game content (customisation options for your worms such as hats, speech banks, glasses, hands and also maps) based on those games.

      3) Audio – the majority of the audio and sound effects were redone for this release so it does indeed sound great. Dialogue and a narrator were newly recorded for the FMV story sequences which work really well now, especially as the worms now lip synch to what is being said, and some of the music was updated too, especially for the front end.

      4) Ranked matches – A delay has indeed been added for team weapon usage, to prevent this happening, which does help with the balance in these matches.

      Hope you enjoy the game!

  • it updates at Grace Chan O Clock

  • And what, may I ask, is the Plus discount? I’m hoping for 30% .

  • Sweet! I love everything that comes out from Team 17! Keep the platinums coming :)

  • Oh yea, i forgot to mention – we’re ready for Alien Breed 4, 5, and 6 whenever you are!!!

  • So will we be able to play this on the Vita as well? If so, then I’ll definitely be getting this.

    • Hi, we don’t believe this will be playable on the Vita, but it is our understanding that Worms: Battle Islands PSP will be compatible with Vita from launch.

  • The Worms 2: Armageddon PSN release left me a little sour. Good game, but when I load up my Sega Saturn copy of Worms and see it has the Bungee & Minigun, along with a “password” system to create and keep your own levels while W2:A did not makes me sad. Then I load up my Dreamcast copy of Worms World Party and see countless weapons/utilities/features (text chat!!) all missing from W2:A and it makes me even sadder. :( You make the claim that Ultimate Mayhem isn’t gimped from past releases but I don’t know man. I just don’t know. We shall see, huh?

    • Hi, you make some interesting points, and we are always glad to hear from our fans of past titles from the Saturn and Dreamcast days! Sorry to hear that Worms 2: Armageddon wasnt quite to your tastes, and Worms Ultimate Mayhem is certainly an improved version combining Worms 4: Mayhem and the campaign from Worms 3D – hope you enjoy it if you choose to check it out!

  • I still intend to pick this game up when I can finally add funds to my American account (living abroad can be inconvenient at times), but I have two questions. Are there any plans for 1) Vita support, 2) Move support? My top preference is PS3 with move support, but under normal circumstances, I think I’d rather play it on the go. Still won’t complain to have it on PS3, though! Thanks for bringing it over!

    • Hi, glad to hear the game is of interest to you – we don’t have plans at the moment for either Vita or Move support though I am afraid. Hope you enjoy it on PS3 though! :-)

  • gotta get dis game…

  • I’m just playing Worms Ultimate Mayhem right now and it’s very awesome!!! Thank you Mark Baldwin for the replies about the game! I played ranked matches online and, until now, no problems playing! The only problem it’s a little lag moments when it comes a lot of explosions on the same time, but this don’t affect the gameplay! It’s very worth buying! I loved it!

Also, if someone want’s to add me to play online, do it! hahaha

    See ya!

    • Hi, great to hear that you are playing it already and think it is awesome! And you are welcome for the replies, hope they made sense to you, good luck in your online battles! Best wishes.

  • I have one suggestion for Team17 about this game: What about a Lobby, or a “Players Online” function? it’s because that gives us some perspective if the matches will happen… there’s not much people online right now, i think ;/

  • Encouraging to hear its improved. I’ll almost surely pick up W:UM at some point. As for W2:A, don’t get me wrong. I played the heck out of it. Its hard to make Worms not fun and in that area it succeeded. I was merely disappointed by the numerous missing things from game past. Keep up the good work!
