The Drop: Week of February 20th 2012 New Releases

PlayStation Vita is only days away from arriving in North America, and we’re continuing the celebration with another phenomenal week of releases on The Drop.

The quirky and addictive worlds of Plants vs Zombies and Touch My Katamari roll onto the PS Vita. On PS3, we are introduced to the science-fiction worlds of Asura’s Wrath and Syndicate. PSN brings demos to one of the most anticipated games on PS Vita with Unit 13 and SSX for the PlayStation 3.

New York City, are you ready? I’ll be in the big Apple with Jeff this week, ushering in PS Vita to the gaming world this Tuesday night at 550 Madison in Midtown New York, see you at 8PM!

Enjoy this week’s The Drop!

PlayStation Vita

Shinobido 2: Revenge of Zen (PSN/Game Card) — Shinobido 2: Revenge of Zen raises the bar over the original with even more stylish ninja action, new gameplay features, intuitive touch controls and a thrilling dynamic storyline. Players will scale sheer walls, leap across roof tops, sneak up silently on their prey, and expertly dispatch enemy after enemy with their razor-sharp blade. New gameplay features include Assassination, which lets players make silent and satisfying kills more easily. Throughout the game, players will hone their skills to execute numerous different attacks and finish their enemies in elegant style, while the game controls will make full and intuitive use of the touch screen capabilities of PlayStation Vita.

Plants vs Zombies — Help! The zombies have invaded! And don’t look now, but they’re coming for you next! You’ll need to think fast and plant faster to fend off this mob of helmet-clad, pole-vaulting zombies.

Hustle Kings (Demo Available) — Rack ’em up and hustle your way to the top of the leaderboards with Hustle Kings. Set in contemporary and stylish pool bars, the Hustle Kings game allows players to hone in on their billiards skills in one of the most realistic looking billiards settings ever realized.

Touch My Katamari — Roll up some fun with this portable entry in the beloved Katamari Damacy franchise. In Touch My Katamari, the ever-growing ball of bits and bobs is controlled by touching the screen or using both analog control sticks to roll it in any direction. A completely new Katamari gameplay feature allows players to use the rear touch panel of the PlayStation Vita system to stretch the ball either horizontally or vertically to pick up more objects at once or squeeze through a narrow gap. With many more details yet to be revealed, the Prince is already limbering up in the wings to bring a dose of irresistible Katamari oddness to the PS Vita.

Ben 10 Galactic Racing — The first kart racing game set in the popular BEN 10 universe and based on the hit Cartoon Network TV series features Ben and his alien friends competing in an over-the-top, galactic grand prix race through a variety of tracks on five different planets! Compete for the best times in the high-speed grand prix modes or engage in four-player multiplayer mayhem!

Army Corps of Hell (PSN/Game Card) — A bloodmoon shall rise over battlefields of endless warfare and ritualistic sacrifice when this hellish action game of regimented slaughter invades the PS Vita!

Dynasty Warriors Next (PSN/Game Card) — Tecmo KOEI’s massive battle franchise Dynasty Warriors comes to the Playstation Vita.

Tales From Space: Mutant Blobs Attack — In Mutant Blobs Attack players take on the role of a twisted mutant blob with a bit of an attitude problem. Players explore, puzzle and platform their way through a world that takes them from the size of a quarter to that of a giant city – devouring everything around them all the while.

Using a range of inputs including touch-based Blob movement and world manipulation controls as well as good old fashioned thumbstick platforming, players will explore a unique gaming experience never before possible.

Asura’s Wrath — Inspired by Asian mythology and fused with science fiction, Asura’s Wrath aims to redefine the action genre by delivering unprecedented levels of dynamism, drama and interaction. Once a revered deity, Asura was betrayed by his fellow gods and stripped of all his powers. Consumed by anger at the injustice he has suffered and swearing vengeance, Asura discovers he can use this fury to his advantage and turn it against his enemies. By channelling his inner rage, Asura is now able to unleash devastating attacks and wreak havoc as he battles against the deities who have wronged him and their earthly forces. Inspired by episodic dramas, Asura’s Wrath is split into distinct sections with gameplay and narrative unfolding as one and building to a final climatic conclusion.

Syndicate — Set in 2069, Syndicate takes players into a dark, Machiavellian world run without government oversight with many syndicates vying for total dominance of their local market place. With no one to question their intentions or actions, three mega corporations – Eurocorp, Cayman Global, and Aspari – are at the forefront of this brutal war for control of the pivotal American market.

In the world of Syndicate, everything is digitally connected, including the people. Players aren’t limited to the weapons in their hands. Through DART 6 bio-chip technology implanted in their head, players can slow down time and breach the digital world around them to take down their foes using a variety of upgradable hacking mechanics. Syndicate’s blend of fast-paced, futuristic, action shooter settings and story combined with innovative chip breach gameplay instantly immerses players in a unique digital world.

Mafia II (PS3 Digital Download) — Mafia 2 immerses players in the mob underworld of a fictitious late 1940’s / early 1950’s scenario. The game engages you in a cinematic Hollywood movie experience in a living, breathing city, fusing high octane gunplay with white knuckle driving and an engaging narrative.

Star Wars: The Force Unleashed II (PS3 Digital Download) — Explore more of the hidden shadows of the Sith with this sequel to the hit game Star Wars: The Force Unleashed. Starkiller, Darth Vader’s apprentice, returns with over-the-top Force powers and embarks on a journey to discover his own identity and to reunite with his one true love, Juno Eclipse. In Star Wars: The Force Unleashed II, Starkiller is once again the pawn of Darth Vader — but instead of training his protégée as a ruthless assassin, the dark lord is attempting to clone his former apprentice in an attempt to create the Ultimate Sith warrior. The chase is on — Starkiller is in pursuit of Juno and Darth Vader is hunting for Starkiller.

Soldiers are placed in a tense, hostile, and claustrophobic environment where they must complete a variety of military objectives. Players act as the Squad Leader, providing direction to Alpha and Bravo fire teams. The successful Squad Leader effectively uses cover in the environment and moves his fire teams in a coordinated fashion so they can protect themselves from possible attacks that could come from any direction. Full Spectrum Warrior puts you in the dirt with your men, where danger lurks around every corner.

  • Tho my inner child is telling me to “GET IT GET IT GET IT NOW” for the vita. Im still going to wait till its no longer new in the market because i cant afford nethir the Wifi only or the 3g/wifi model. and by the time I have enough money for the VITA. there will be a PSP Vita slim. sure its going to be awhile before that happens. but i’ll probally be done with college (once i get several more K, without taking out any college loan to start that is)

  • Can’t wait to pick up my Vita! I’ve been debating for a while if I should get the regular Wi-Fi or 3G edition. I finally caved in and pre-ordered the 3G and I’m happy about the decision! And I’m super surprised about the Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm – Generations demo! This week will be awesome!!

  • SSX demo is really nice. The last time I played SSX it was… on DreamCast, lol. It’s been a while! =D

  • Still no Gravity Rush demo? That’s not cool, especially considering that the GameStop Vita demo units have it. Without sound.

  • hey rey when will the monster rancher 3 and 4 game be on ps store as ps1 Classic i hope some time soon.

  • please give me some good news that its coming soon.

  • Nothing about the psone classic: mickey wild’s adventure?

  • Hi from Canada Rey !!! This is my first post on playstation blog, and I would like to say thanks for all your hard work and dedication to your job. Also I have a question about PS2 and PS1 classics, why isnt there a larger volume of classics being issued on PSN ? there are also some questionable choices for games released on PSN.(too many examples)
What dictates a games release and what factors into the decision to bring a game onto your service?
I really am curious as to the whole process from start to finish, even a short summary would be great.

Thanks rey, for taking the time to read this blog every week

P.S. here is hoping the wizardry ps2 game and other great ps2 classics are released!! (ff 10, haunting ground, etc)

  • Why is there no Ninja Gaiden Sigma Plus?????????????????

  • Please tell me that Ninja Gaiden Sigma Plus will be digital and there as well.
Don’t tell me that the retail + digital promise for Vita games will be broken on the very first week.

  • Please release Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep so we Vita owners can play it :) A lot of Vita owners never owned a PSP and we want access to these classics ^__^

  • Is there still no official release date in the US for Gravity Rush? It’s already out in Japan, and nobody seems to know; it has been on SCEA’s list of launch titles but now I’m seeing May.

  • It seems like Naruto Generations is getting left out by fans and it also seems like i’am the only one looking forward to the demo….

what time will the demo be out ?

btwn i already played the Japanese demo lol but i wanna play it in english

  • Hey im about to buy ffiv on the store for psp its not goin to be droped in price tomarrow is it?

  • What time this week is the Naruto demo coming out?

  • when does the store update

  • @100 Taylor, i´ve found a solution to that problem, it should be explained to us! i was looking to that a long time, just pre triangle on the game-demo you want to organize, let´s say it´s virtua tenis, press triangle and select where it says album” or folder” and name it “sports” , repeat with every sports game, then with every racer etc., then choose to order content by folders, and done! you have folders with specific content, i have folder fors ps3 full games, ps1, minis, racers, retro, demos etc

  • Can us people that already got Plants vs. Zombies on the PS3 get at least a discount for it? Come on…I know my kids would love to play that on our Vita, as it is I have to remind my son that his 3DS is feeling very lonely lately. He can’t put down Rayman Originins. Lol Also, a small suggestion, when you guys update the browser I think it would be a good idea to allow us to browse sideways. I think some of us would really like that. Other than that keep up the good work guys! Viva la VITA! :)

  • I got the first edition bundle PSVITA last week I have to say im 100% satisfied, loving the games, trophies and features of the system, cant wait for some of the games this week!!!!!

  • hemm could really careless about the vita i want some more PS2 games to come out on the store so far there are nothing but crappy games on there aside from RESIDENT EVIL 4 AND TWISTED METAL BLACK

  • when will naruto generations demo be out? at what time?

  • Hey Rey,
Any chance the .hack// series will be released on PSN?

  • No mention of Ninja Gaiden makes me VERY nervous. Hope the “every game will be available for download on retail’s day one” promise holds for more than just the week between the first edition and regular launch.

Prove me wrong, guys! I’m pretty much begging you here!

  • ANY NEWS ON YOUTUBE FOR VITA… AND “”WHAT VERSION OF FLASH”” WILL IT COME WITH.

  • Hey Rey
what time it the new stuff will on PSN, I’m in Psn store right now and there nothing new on here?

  • Stoked for the SSX demo. Another ps2 classic thats not really a classic for me :| The store should re-release Champions of Norrath 1 and 2 Id pay 60 bucks for those! Hell Id pay 60 bucks each for those!

  • SSX looks pretty good. Might try out the demo of it.

  • When can we expect Netflix or Skype on the Vita? And is there any chance of Hulu Plus coming to Vita?

  • Wouldn’t switch to xbox if I was paid to, but I do have a complaint. Why does installing a game take so long? I am on a broadband connection, and it took almost an hour to download the full game trial of Brothers in Arms, then it took just over an hour and a half to instal it after it finished downloading. What’s up with that? I can download the same size files of mp3 or jpeg and it is almost instantaneous.

  • PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE get square enix to release Final Fantasy XII (12) for play on the PS3. (I really miss that game – best ever made!)

  • But of course, would it be too much to ask that you guys place a warning when purchasing a PSOne classic? In case you haven’t noticed, you cannot save your game progress on any of those downloaded PSOne classics.

  • is the new dlc for sain’ts row 3 coming out this week too?

  • when can we be expecting these to be on the PSN?

  • @bigdave1955 You can’t be serious. You need to create a virtual memory card on your ps3. You can save game progress.

Anyway, it would be nice if we could get frequent updates on psp game compatibility for vita. I have several that will not work on it that I would like to continue playing.

Also need to bring Crisis Core to psn already.

  • I’ve been waiting for the North American Naruto Shippuden Ultimate Ninja Storm Generations demo, thought we would never get here. Now if we could get some Dragon Ball Z imports for Japanese PS Classics it would be freakin sweet!

  • “+ ThreeLeggedFreak on February 19th, 2012 at 8:10 pm said:

Still upset about PvZ having to be bought again if you already bought the PS3 version. SCE supposedly has control over SOE, but Sony Online Entertainment said F that and is being way too greedy here. I hope people pass on this product.”

Wah wah! Why not cry to Nintendo for releasing Mario & Sonic at the Olympics on the Wii and 3DS and charging $39 each. Why not cry to Activision for releasing Call of Duty games on the Wii, PS3, X360, DS, and charging people for each version. How about complaining about John Madden Football to EA Sports? That’s on every system AND smartphones, and EA charges for each one. Not only that, but each year, people buy a new Madden game even tho it is largely unchanged from the previous year’s release… If I spent $60 on Madden 12, shouldn’t I get Madden 13 for free? Hmmm????

You people disgust me. Rather than whine, why not THANK the developers for putting quality games on the system.

  • Sony and any third party developer who reads the blogs:

I, for one, want to thank you for offering one of the best launch line-ups in gaming history. There is a little bit for every gamer here. At 33 yrs old, I’ve been witness to every system launch from the Atari 6400 to the Vita, and of all the systems, the Vita has the strongest set of launch titles. Add to that the expected 1st year selection of titles, and you’ve got a great start! Uncharted. Marvel Vs Capcom 3. Mortal Kombat. Call of Duty. Madden. Metal Gear HD. Wipe Out. Street Fighter X Tekken. Many quality titles, all between $29 to $49.

I look forward to many years of enjoying my Vita. Not only with games purchased at local stores, but also fun arcade titles on the PSN, Just remember, Sony, that for every single whiny crybaby on the blog or Facebook, there are hundreds of kids, teens, and adults enjoying their PS Vitas, blissfully unaware of the crap you guys put up with day in and day out.

  • LOOK AT ME I AM ON THE SONY BLOG :D

  • At what time does PSN store update? im dieng for the SSX demo

  • Hey Rey! I would like to kno will there be an Oovoo app for the PS Vita & PS3

  • Naruto Generations demo is not yet out! When will it be?, Im going crazy!!!

  • I’m looking for the store update, usually it’s been done by now, but it’s not. I really want to see the apps in the Vita store, been waiting nearly a week … and then the Unit 13 demo …. was hoping to get it all tried out before bedtime, but that’s coming fast in the Eastern US!

Also wishing for something on Pixel Junk Monsters Deluxe … their jp website says something about it via an icon on the page, but I’d like some English in paragraph form as to what it will mean exactly and when we can use that game on the PS Vita., any updates to it or what, when, why, why not, etc. I feel like I’ve asked about it ad nouseum with no response, plus I’m not the only one asking about this beloved game.
