PS Vita System Software Update (v1.61)

Now that some of you early adopters have PlayStation Vita in your hands, we’re going to begin keeping you posted on any changes to system software here on PlayStation Blog.

PlayStation Vita (updated image)

In preparation for Wednesday’s wide release of PS Vita, tonight we’re making System Software Update (v1.61) available for download. If you are just turning on your PlayStation Vita for the first time, this update will add the following features:

  • A new application, (Maps), has been added to the home screen.
  • In addition to photos, you can now take videos using the Photo application.
  • You can now publish stories about the products that you rate in PlayStation Store to Facebook.
  • In near, players’ information is now displayed on the Discoveries screen. On this screen, a list of the online IDs of up to 100 players that you have encountered, and the number of times that you encountered each player, are displayed. Tap an online ID to display that player’s profile screen.
  • The Mac OS version of Content Manager Assistant for PlayStation has been released. The Windows version has also been updated.

You can download Content Manager Assistant from here. Refer to the website to find out how to install the application.

If you have already updated your PS Vita to 1.60, 1.61 will improve certain aspects of the system software.

There are a few ways to update the firmware on your PS Vita:

  • Select “System Update” under the “Settings” menu and download the firmware directly to your PS Vita over Wi-Fi.
  • Connect your PS Vita to a PS3 or a PC/Mac and update via Content Manager.

  • Cant wait to get mine :)

  • First i see i am

  • Yes!!!!!!!!!

  • Is 1.61 mandatory, or can I stay with 1.60?

Also, can’t wait for you guys to enable Vita to play PSOne classics. Hope that firmware comes soon :).

  • By the way never get a answer on wich company in Quebec (Canada) will take care about the 3g.
Another tought : I hope Sony will ear their consumer to put a converter for the umd we already own (Like in Japan). I know like few ppl said if you want to play psp game just play them on psp, but when you want to bring only 1 portable system you dont want to bring 2 system with all the stuff ….. Thank you and keep doing the amazing job :)

  • Please make it easy to tell what game card is currently inside your PS Vita since it is annoying that you have to pull out the card in order to tell. Moreover, combine the following into a single app since it is really odd that they are separate (Friends, Party and Group Messaging).

  • Oh and it would be great if the PS Vita was able to automatically download firmware updates like you can on PS3.

  • Kind of related since PS is pushing social media more–my brother’s PS3 account was accidentally created as a sub-account to mine way back in 2006–which means he can’t use FaceBook now even though he’s 22–can you change that in an update so sub-accounts have access to FaceBook? Also, will this impact his ability to use FB on the Vita? Finally, I can’t seem to find the social networking icons in the PS store–will all those apps launch this Tuesday? My bro uses his Vita for when he goes to dialysis so he’s desperately waiting for news on the Netflix app!

  • @7 It is already changed… sub-accounts can use FB on PS Vita.

  • Its not a Sony product until you update it fresh out of the box! Not complaining though because I am getting mine In 1 day 3 Hours and 47 Minutes!

  • Gonna update anyways. I want my PS3 and my Vita up to date.

  • @8 nice :-) They still can’t use FB on PS3 though–but atleast on Vita he can!

Also, just realized another thing, there needs to be a WAAAAAY easier way to put the Vita into airplane mode than having to go into the settings to do it–you should be able to put a bubble icon on one of the home screens you tap to toggle the airplane mode! (Make this optional so people who don’t travel much don’t have to worry about it).

Oh, and for things like PS Store, Near and Settings, make it so I enter their full thing by just tapping the bubble. With games, getting the live area is cool. I don’t need a live area for PS Store, Near and Settings–I just need to get in them!

  • I’m getting mine on Thursday, got a 130 dollars of the system

  • Larry Da Vinci says: ‘Thank all that is Sackly in this world that you released the content manager for Macintosh-users in time for the launch! Now all my Sackfriends can rejoice in a plethora of entertainment of both audial and visual dee-lite!’

  • The update is not available yet.

Looking forward to using Twitter, Facebook, Netflix, and Skype.

  • I agree with the notion that Friends, Group Messaging, & Party should all be ONE unified App.

And just so everybody knows and not make the same mistake I did, DO NOT pull out or switch your memory stick while the Vita is on or even in Stand By mode or you’ll risk your data getting corrupted. This makes switching memory sticks a lot more of a hassle than it should be but its worth noting: only do it when the system is completely off.

  • Is the update available now? I only have 1.60 installed and it says that I am up to date.

  • Friends on the PS3 have told me that when I have logged into the PSN last on the vita that it screws up my last login information on the PS3 and my name when it eventually shows up on there friends list is last and the color bar is changed to grey.

I guess a little glitch that needs to be ironed out from being able to sign in on 2 different machines.

I agree that only 1 app was needed for friends, group messaging and party chat.

We need flash for the browser please and the ability to create folders for our pictures and even our videos.

So far the vita is everything I hoped for, no regrets on picking it up.

  • I pre-ordered my vita today and bought Hot Shots, Wipeout, and Little Deviants! Can’t wait to pick up my Vita on Wendesday! Don’t let me down Sony like you did with PSP. I’m giving you guys a second chance, because I’m a loyal fan.

  • Update is live and is 95 MB in size.

  • Ha! I plugged the Vita into my desktop and started the content manager to check if the update was available and it was not. I then loaded up the friends app and received the update notice. That was a nice surprise. The download was quick, but then I got an error. Next, I did the update by wifi and it is installing now.

  • @18 you wont be disappointed.

Shouldn’t there be a games app instead of a seperate icon for each game?

  • Should be able to organize and customize your home screen and icons.

  • @22, you can customize the home screen or screens and move the apps around. Press and hold on the home screen to enter edit mode.

  • Downloading it now.

  • I was in the middle of switching in between apps when I opened on and it said that I had to update the system. Well I guess thats good and all.
@17 Yeah at least friends and group messaging should be together. Party chat can stay by itself.

  • nice!! i’m getting mine on wednesday. i also agree about the party, friends, and group message apps should be able optional as one app. i would like to suggest making folders for apps where its more customized to your personal preference. keep making me happy sony!!!

  • Would be nice if we could delete the Welcome Park too.

  • @ mastorofpuppetz

Hopefully a future update will allow the creation of folders. I could use a folder for card based games, downloaded games, Demos and such.

Wolf13; #23 is correct about the screen edit mode. Also, you can change the graphic on your id strip. You know how your PS3 profile card allows you to change color? Well the Vita has more than colors, they added graphic strips and they provided a wide and varied selection to choose from. I’m using this retro 8-bit adventure character graphic.

  • This update sounds like the update for 1.60. Are these improvements over these features?

  • i have the vita and it sucks it really suck ok im lying it rocks epic i just hope sony gives it more love then it did to the psp

  • I’m wondering if mediaGo will be updated for vita, I’m hoping the cradle will make it connect to mediago like it does with pspgo, since my psp games and movies are there.
also, have the wi-fi version, can’t seem to get near to obtain my location??????
other than that, this thing is wicked.
also noticed that ps store has no vita section(yet).

  • Currently downloading it now. but does it fix the problem with PSN? for some reason i couldnt get the dlc for Ultimate Marvel Vs Capcom 3 despite having the dlc downloaded on my ps3.

  • Cant wait for a mine. Newegg doesnt charge for tax!

  • Can we have Megaman Legends 1 and 2?

  • My son is loving his PS Vita…says its totally cool…loves getting it a week before everyone else…touchscreen is amazing:)

  • SONY, still no 3G vita in CANADA!!!! what’s up with that? I would gladly buy it if it was available.

  • Anyone else having issues finding their location for Near/maps/etc?

  • ok seems like the store is still messed up. cant download any dlc. hopefully its fixed on Tuesday.

  • Firmware update was quick and painless.

I’m up to 117 happy Vita owners near me. I can’t wait until this weekend, near is going to explode.

  • getting update right now, just wanna say i have had my vita for about a week now and i am very pleased with it, people i know that didnt even plan on getting one quickly changed there minds after seeing it, just as i would have done if it was me.

  • i dont know why the blog havent said anything about this yet but for the people getting the vita on the 22nd and little deviants , wipeout and other games , there are updates already , you can update the game through the live area , there will be a yellow icon that yellow icon on the top left corner , that yellow icon means update or at least that all i have been able to do.

  • Eric please release an update so our ps3 friends can see us online and what games we are playing , thanks

  • does anyone know if the future update are they gotta make it where you can download and play original ps1 games to your vita and instead of using that remote play?

    Thanx

  • so tomorrow mine will ship!

  • Already a update, that things gonna be one big problem. good luck to your wasted money.

  • Dood! Enjoying my Vita. One suggestion….

Would be nice to have the option for posting photos straight to Facebook.

  • I’m gonna take a wild guess and say….. #44 x-D-G-A-F-x couldn’t get an advance on his allowance.

  • Attention gamers: User “Sage_Minato89” stole my account. Please be aware from that @#$%.
