Retro City Rampage for PS3 and PS Vita: Movie Poster

Let’s get right to it — Retro City Rampage is coming to PS3 and PS Vita! I couldn’t be more excited to finally share the news. For those not familiar with RCR, it’s an over-the-top open-world crime game that combines everything you loved in classic games and mashes them up into a “toon town” of nostalgia and parody. Steal cars, and then jump on pedestrians for big shiny coins. Collect power-ups and outrun the law while rampaging the city, shooting a light gun or swinging your bionic arm.

Fans of Grand Theft Auto will feel right at home with RCR, but the missions extend far beyond driving and shooting. They fuse classic gaming and modern mechanics to span virtually every genre, from stealth to platforming, adventure, rhythm and more—there are even underwater levels. What I’m most proud of is that everything flows together using the same mechanics and visuals. Even missions inspired by ’80s coin-op games seamlessly take place in the open-world.

It really is a massive game with something for everyone. It boasts a full story mode with over 50 missions, taking place in extensive city with stores, buildings and activities to interact with. For those of you who just want to jump right into the action and rampage the town, there’s also an Arcade Mode. It’s packed with over 30 fast-paced, score-based challenges where you’ll use the 25+ weapons and power-ups available to rack up points. You’ll be able to share replays as you try to dethrone your friends!

Bringing RCR to PlayStation has been a fantastic experience. Sony’s been so supportive and great to work with, since the beginning. This will mark the seventh year since I began developing games for the PlayStation platforms, and I look forward to many more to come. With the ability to bring RCR to both the PS3 and PS Vita, you’ll be able to play the full game anywhere you go with the best possible visuals. The PS Vita is an incredible system, one look at the screen and you’ll be hooked too. It takes RCR’s colorful art direction to the next level.

The PS Vita has been a dream to develop for as well. I’ve developed for every console and handheld from the past decade, and the PS Vita’s development system is the best I’ve ever used. Sony’s simply gotten everything right, from the hardware to the tools and support. With such a great development system, teams are able to focus entirely on making the best possible game, and I can’t wait to see what’s to come from other developers in the future.

Remember when you were on the playground with your friends as a child, talking about your dream video game? The one that had EVERYTHING in it? Where you could go anywhere and do anything? Well, as you can see, this is my dream game. It’s taken a long time to build, but thanks to the amazing team including myself, Brian Provinciano, artist Maxime Trépanier and the composers Virt, Freaky DNA and Norrin Radd, it’s finally been fully realized and it’s even bigger and better than I first imagined.

So are you rad enough to outrun the law and carjack the ’80s? Then lock and load your LIGHTGUN and power up your POWER-UPS, because you’re about to go on a RETRO CITY RAMPAGE!

  • When is it coming out?

  • “The PS Vita has been a dream to develop for as well. I’ve developed for every console and handheld from the past decade, and the PS Vita’s development system is the best I’ve ever used. Sony’s simply gotten everything right, from the hardware to the tools and support. ”

This is actually a very common sentiment with developers working with the Vita now. I am glad to hear it too. I’m looking forward to all the great things that can come out of the Vita in the future!

  • Will it have retro pricing? I think I’ll puke if this retails for more than $4.99.

  • Hey Brian! Thanks for the update. It seems like I’ve been following this one for a few years, so I’m happy it’s finally making its way out, and to my platform/s of choice.

I do, however, have a question that doesn’t seem to be answered here. Is there any promotion or incentive bundle for folks who want it on both the PS3 and the PSV? Similarly, will this support Cross-Platform Game Saves? I’d love to be able to start this at home on my PS3, move my save to cloud, then continue on the go.

Is there anything you can talk about regarding the above two questions?

Thanks so much for your time. Either way, I’ve been following this for some time so you have to know, you have my cash on Day 1!

  • Congrats Brian! I am really glad to hear that Retro City Rampage is making the jump to PS3 and PS Vita. I saw your presentation at PAXDev last year in Seattle and was impressed and inspired by the tools that you had made to make your game. Personally I will be picking up the PS Vita version and I know it has been a long time in development but I hope the release is a success for you. You might consider doing a combo package of PS3/PS Vita as a combined PSN download for a bit of savings for those of us possibly interested in both. Again thanks for publishing this on the best platform for open-world games.

  • I want this inside my Vita Now!

  • I may have to put this on my “to get” list would be good on the vita i think.

  • Looks and sounds like fun. What type of Vita features will this use? Can’t wait to hear more about the game.

  • This game looks awesome and is a pleasant surprise. I think I’ll pick this up. Keep the roots alive my friend :-)

  • loll it looks awesome

  • If we purchase one version, do we get the other for free? Also will this game support cross-platform play?

  • Vita is one impressive piece of tech. Call of Duty is coming to vita, SONY needs to get GRand Theft Auto and some other bug names (Bethesda for an RPG maybe) on vita and make a vita specific game not ports, if they do it will take off its a joy to play and look at. Sony get great third party support and Vita will take off.

  • YAY! :D

  • To me this seems like the perfect type of game to have on a handheld like the Vita.

  • Brain,I’ve been checking this game out for a long time.on your interviews, videos, website you name it.
And now this game is coming out for the Vita,it makes it even more sweeter because I’m pretty sure you put a lot of work and passion into this game, thanks for making this happen man!!.

  • Hell yeah, I’ve been eyeing this one for a while already. I’ll definitely be picking it up for my Vita whenever the game releases.

  • If it’s buy one get game on both systems, then I’ll consider it (pending reviews), if not, good luck with your product.

  • Oh yes!!! I remember hearing this game wasn’t going to be on the PS3! Really glad its coming!

  • Thank you for bringing this over to PlayStation systems. Should look awesome on that OLED Vita screen :)

  • Looks great. When does it release?

  • @21

It releases in May for PC but Vblank Entertainment is aiming for a simultaneous May release for for all three consoles.

  • I been following this game for some time and can’ believe it’s finally getting released. I remember when it was a GTA 3 clone a few years back.

  • Please oh please let’s not clog up the Vita library with these little 8 bit nickel and dime games. The vita is meant to be a powerhouse handheld. Just like the ps3 doesn’t need those dumb mini games the vita doesn’t need these little time wasters either. Let’s get real.

  • May get it. Looks interesting.

  • I love that Retro City Rampage poster. This is the type of game I want on my PS Vita.

  • Will the game will be on PS vita and PS3 with 1 purchase ? Like Hustle King ??? If yes, instant buy !!!!

If not…. will wait for a pc sale for protestation :P:D.

STILL VERY HAPPY TO SEE THE GAME GOING FULL MULTI PLAT!!! GOOD JOB TO THE DEVS !!!!

And sony, make it good and make it PSV/PS3 ! Like hustle king !!! We LOVE that !

  • @matriXiXiX (24), why so bitter? If this isn’t your cup of tea, then just let the rest of us enjoy the game without your complaining. Anyway I can’t wait to play RCR!

  • 2FOR1Purchase!

  • pre ordered ps vita 7 months ago

my story is when my b day came up i was gona buy a psp go but my dad said it sucks and a ngp was coming up and pre ordered it
    (P.S add me ps3 )

  • Very cool, I hope you guys decide to support cross platform downloads (if you buy the PS3 version you can download the Vita version like motorstorm). I would be buying way more PSN games if more had this type of support.

  • I have to say this looks fun. I’d like to see some video on this game.

  • Support this game y’all, this is going to be a sure classic! I almost jumped out of my seat when I saw the news!!! I was hoping it would come out for PSN or Steam, now it’s coming out for both! I went from having nothing to play it on, to having THREE ways to play ( I will be getting the Vita eventually). Made my day!

  • hey not to rain on anyone but when r we going to see games we really want [EX: xbox has GTA sandadrea] y dont we? if your going to go old school dont have me playing a 8Bit game on a HD system all the time then charge me 9.99 for it yes they where fun but give us games we want not just what you try make a quick buck on. y not have a list and let us vote for a game tht way you get lots of $$$$ and we get a game we realy wanted

  • In the very bottom picture in the bottom left corner, that looks an awfully lot like Doc Louis from Punch-Out!!, or Stanley from The Office

  • @ PHA4Life – That’s lame

  • aha, this game just like the early GTA…

  • EEEEEE!!! Finally! I have been waiting for this for a year now. I love the graphics and soundtrack! Take my money!

  • I don’t suppose there’s an option to buy both vita & ps3 versions together for only a slight cost increase, is there? That really should become a standard option in today’s mobile gaming market.

  • @StinkyMonkey5 hey if u like them get them i did say not to rain on your parade some old games wer the best.but come on look @ what they did with killzone….thats a game i would get yet they say nothing of why its not up after it was sponsored and got all the buzz. then turn and give us 8bits games with no problem i still have my nintendo, sega, and a atari with pac-man game….now to my point StinkyMonkey how many games are not on the psn that you would like to see.i know i have lots of them yet i keep seeing them on the Xbox then as time pass we may get 1or 2 [EX: i got MK2 wanted MK3 but psn only had MK2 yet Xbox had MK3 time pass a verry long time then i saw tht MK2 was taken out of the psn for some time then MK arcade kollection was put in its place i was happy… i know they can do it but there not. so If sony make the list we the plp will say wht we like and you sony will get ur $$$$ faster LET THE PLP TELL YOU WHAT THEY WANT ON PSN – SONY TAKE NOTES

  • @PHA4Life…this really isn’t the forum for complaints, it’s a forum to discuss and ask questions about the topic at hand. If you aren’t happy, might I suggest using the link above to share your thoughts?

    https://share.blog.us.playstation.com/

Otherwise, there’s no use coming in with sour grapes about other issues when everyone here is, obviously, not receptive to your multiple and redundant posts. We get it…you don’t want this, what is the point sharing that with Brian on a topic about his teams game?

  • I’m so happy to see this come to the PS3.

I’ll definitely be picking this up Day 1. I always support the indie guys.

  • Been following the progression of this game for some time. Quite frankly, it will be nearly impossible to pass this up. Love some retro styled gaming and everything about this looks to be a blast. So happy I’ll be able to get this on my PS3 instead of busting out my dust covered wii.

  • This game looks phenomenal!

  • Hey everyone! Thanks for all of the positive comments and questions!

It’s on track for a May release.

You’ll be able to share save games between PS3/Vita. Still sorting out other potential perks ;)

@JaguarCRO Thanks so much! Really appreciate it!

    @nandosupes Really appreciate it!

@SarshelYam Very happy to have been able to make this happen.
