Starhawk: New “Build to Kill” Trailer

Yo….PlayStation Blogoshere!

As most of you know, Starhawk is a frenetic 3rd person shooter with a ton of toys to play with. Its got a strong solo story campaign, deep 32 player head-to-head and even co-op! You can run, fly and drive almost anywhere you want. Its vehicular combat at its finest. The most popular question we get from players unfamiliar with the game is “What is this thing called Build & Battle?” Simply put its a dead simple way to build up a base all around you while staying in the middle of a fierce battle. Its not block building and its not slow. We’re not making Sim City. To show you, here is a nifty trailer!

In Starhawk we have one simple slogan…”Kill to build, build to kill.”

It’s not a gimmick. Its a really easy way for players to change the battlefield on the fly, in an instant straightforward manner. Its about dropping gigantic crates from orbit, having them smash down in front of you and having a big laser or bunker build right in front of you. You can even drop them on enemies (“Dorothy’d”).

So other than dropping massive structures from the sky….why is this fun? Because each one of these structures does something unique. Something tactical. Think of them nearly like firing a gun. They all mean something and they can all help your team. Just collect enough energy and spend it wisely. The Build & Battle system will change the battlefield every time you play. No map is ever the same. It’s not about memorizing a camping spot. Its about shaping the map the way you want, and making your enemy react to it. It’s about having options you didn’t have before, giving you deeper and smarter gameplay. Knowing how to shoot pretty well helps, too.

If you’re tired of playing the same old shooters with nothing but a skin change then you might want to give our Beta test a try. It’s free on PSN! For those of you who are already crazy about the game, pre-order
today
and get some sweet DLC for no extra cost.

PS. For you Starhawk vets, Update 1.3 is right around the corner. If you think you know what this game is about, then you’re about to get your learn on.

  • 1.3, 1.3, 1.3!

Can not wait for some 32 player battles!

  • How are resources managed? In other words, what allows players to build and what limits them?

  • Sweet trailer. I’m a big fan of Warhawk and loved the Starhawk private beta. I haven’t had many chances to play the public beta but I’m sure it’s even better.

I’m really looking forward to this game.

Great job on everything so far Sony Santa Monica and the LightBox Interactive team! :)

  • Looking forward to the update. Is it going to allow parties? I rarely ever care about playing online games but this game is fantastic and I’ll be pre-ordering for sure.

  • Not much new shown here, which is fine I suppose, on the bright side they showed new character customizations for the Rifters. One thing I loved about WarhawK was unlocking new customizations for both my character and WarhawK, and since it was all tied to rank you’d see Generals with their cool outfits thinking “Hey! That could be me some day” but I only made it to Air Marshal though haha.

  • I put a lot of hours into Warhawk over the years, but I just can’t get super excited for Starhawk. I was really hoping it would have the same feel and soul of Warhawk, but it just doesn’t feel right. It seems that something is just a bit off. I think my reservations have to do with the build and battle. I just think that with people possibly focusing more on the building of the base, they may lose sight of the actual battle taking place. They could be over here worrying about building some structure, and not realize that over there the team flag is quickly leaving the area. Now I realize people didn’t always pay attention to the battle in Warhawk, but there was no build and battle to distract people. I just think Warhawk’s multiplayer action was so incredible, and in my opinion just about perfect, it seems Starhawk’s action is just a little bit slower. I’m still going to get Starhawk, and hopefully when I start to dig into it like Warhawk my excitement level will finally come around. I certainly wish Lightbox all the best!!!

  • wait until 32 player battles. Things will get better. People are still learning

  • Awesome trailer. I really like this game so far. But like ASILENTENIGMA said, I don’t really feel the sould of Warhawk in it. I’m sure that will change though. I have one question. Will there be at least one snow/arctic map in the final release? I know that may be a dumb question but I really, really, love snow maps.

  • @ASILENTENIGMA I honestly think once we start seeing more clan play and team work the structure issues will begin to solve itself.

  • 3rd person sci-fi cowboy shooter thing? Lame….Then I tried the beta.
I know a half finished beta is a far cry from a demo but I am sold on this game already. Build and Battle keeps every round fresh and exciting. I really can’t wait for 32 player maps and splitscreen. If you are on the fence about getting the beta I would encourage you leap over that fence and download this ASAP.

  • I’m really liking the new Customization items!!

Harv, I asked you once if we are going to get Avatars based off Starhawk and you said yes. Just want to know if thats still happening :)

Thanks for the update! May can’t come soon enough!!!! (My classes end in May! So I can starhawk all day!!)

  • May 8th its on
    .

  • Nice Another Interesting Game to look forward to thanks Sony

  • Nice how your enemies just walked up the center, straight into all the defenses you prebuilt, instead of going around the side where you had absolutely nothing.
Interesting in a trailer, but not in a game.

  • Hey all, check out our neat little group that was a big part of the early Warhawk community, the Rebel Alliance Clan. Find us at our website: RebelAllianceClan.com . We’ll be making a big splash in Starhawk!

  • So while it is a cool video…

How’d the team at home get a hold of so many mines? And deploy so many?

It is shot to make it look like only one player is dropping all those mines, where it would have to be spread between several players, since the most any one player can drop is 3.

Looks to me like marketing is playing loose with the game play again. They’d never do that, right?

And while I love the idea of the special edition, I just can’t do it because of Gamestop. Too bad it is a Gamestop exclusive.

  • @Guardian_Bob

Geez, I’d hate to watch a movie with you.

Also whats the hate with Gamestop? Just shows how much you want this game if you simply can’t get it at gamestop. Never understood how people don’t like it. Sure they rip you off in selling games, but thats why you sell them on eBay!!

  • @JLP_M

When I watch a movie that is supposed to represent a historical piece, I want the facts to be correct. This is to show how the game is played, my comment is that you can’t play it that way.

As for Gamestop, I have a moral objection to supporting dishonest companies. Unlike some, my principals are not flexible when they conflict with my desires.

Gamestop has, in the past, opened up boxes and removed codes for a competitor OnLive. As a result, they actually stole something from the end consumer. Don’t believe me? Do a Google search for: gamestop onlive. I cannot support a company who actively engages in and promotes theft. Guess that’s the price I pay for having principals, no special edition.

  • @Guardian_Bob

I’m just talking about movies in general, I’m saying you’d probaly make comments like “That is so not possible” every second. You could play the game that way actually, all you need is team work! Also don’t know if you noticed but the mines where set there before they showed the shot of that one person setting down one.

So that little thing is affecting your choice in getting the special edition? I mean, is it that hard to go to another store and pick up Deus Ex?

Your probaly looking at paying about $20 for the stuff included in the SE since you arn’t getting it at gamestop.

Warhawk would be $5.99 Theme would be 1.99. Soundtrack..eh $10.00 since the recent soundtracks to buy on the store are $10, and DLC maps/skins probaly $10.

  • Shouldn’t have made the guess on around how much it should be before I guessed how much all those things sepretly would cost. Just get it at gamestop man!!

  • Now THIS is what i call a GAME. I will be sure to download this and start playing soon as i get off work tonight. Im not much of a shooter gamer but this game has really caught my attention. Thanx Harvard Bonin

  • Around the corner next week? Around the corner this Friday I HOPE 1.3 will be epic..

  • i luv it!!! gonna be on this beta whole weekend like mad ma say!!!!!

  • lol the actual game is not even close to being as fun and fast paced as that trailer. NOT EVEN.

Make a Warhawk 2.0 and I’ll be all over it.

    Warhawk>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Starhawk

  • I (exploit deleted) love this game.

  • STARHAWK – BEST 3RD PERSON SHOOTER EVER – I THINK THEY SHOULD TAKE OVER THE SOCOM SERIES AND MAKE IT THE BEST SOCOM FRANCHISE EVER! I HOPE STARHAWKS STORY MODE IS LENGTHY AND HAS A GOOD STORY LINE..ALSO I HOPE ITS CO-OP ONLINE..IT WOULD BE CRAZY FUN TO PLAY WITH A FRIEND AND NOT HAVE TO SPLIT SCREENS . ANYONE WHO IS COMPARING THIS GAME TO WARHAWK AND SAYING ITS BETTER ARE RIDICULOUS.STARHAWK OFFERS MORE AND BETTER GAME MECHANICS. DONT GET ME WRONG I LOVE WARHAWK BUT IM ALL ABOUT MOVING FORWARD..EITHER WAY THEY ARE BOTH AMAZING GAMES MADE BY THE SAME GAME DEVS..SO STICK TO WHAT YOU LIKE. I HAVE ANOTHER QUESTION ..WILL THIS GAME BE IN 3D..BECAUSE IM VERY CLOSE TO BUYING THE PLAYSTATION 3D TV..AND IF THIS GAME IS 3D IM DEFINITLY GOING TO PURCHASE THE TV..NJOYING MOVIES IN 3D IS GREAT BUT PLAYING STARHAWK IN 3D IS EPIC! THANKS SCEA AND LIGHT BOX – KEEP UP THE FANTASTIC WORK!!

  • “ANYONE WHO IS COMPARING THIS GAME TO WARHAWK AND SAYING ITS BETTER ARE RIDICULOUS”

I just don’t get, nor will I ever understand, how we’ve reached this point in gaming, music, movies, sports, etc, where everyone has to have the same opinion on everything.

“STARHAWK OFFERS MORE AND BETTER GAME MECHANICS”

I feel Warhawk’s beauty was the simplicity. Round starts, grab a hawk, grab a zone, grab an RPG, you are in the heat of the battle. With Starhawk, I worry about getting slowed down by base building and basic resource management. If I was playing Command and Conquer, that’s a different story.

“BUT IM ALL ABOUT MOVING FORWARD”

Sometimes simplicity is the best approach, I feel. That’s why I always applauded NHL 09 for including the NHL 94 control scheme. Or the way Modnation could auto-populate your race track if you wanted it to. In a lot of ways, I think games could benefit from streamlining the process for the users.

I’m still looking forward to it, I just have some doubts about how well the build and battle will work in multiplayer.

  • @formix you have to build up power or energy in order to build things either by killing an enemy or by shooting barrels of it randomly placed throughout the game.. No energy no awesome hawks or jetpacks!!!!

  • The ebb & flow of a Build & Battle game is great! The enemy building bases in a really annoying spot and tearing into you, then your team rallies and pushes them back, destroying their base, then you’re building a base in an annoying spot for them and tearing into them!

It’s like a destructive, bloody, ocean tide, ebbing & flowing & sloshing across the battlefield.

  • There needs to be a limit on how many structures each player can build per structure type because there are too many players who build just to build & when I wait to build something for tactical reasons I can’t because our team has reached its max. Also, a player who calls for a Hawk should have a possesion time where other players can’t use it so they can’t steal it. It’s 2 bars stolen by that player, basically, not to mention the player who called it has to wait to get another one. Otherwise, AWESOME game!

  • Shame no one uses this kind of teamwork in the beta. Also I’m sick and tired of people placing buildings in the stupidest places ever and me having to go around and recall them…

  • I really enjoyed the beta of this game.

  • Enigma777 oi feel your pain..and in this case you can add me and whenever you decide to get online on the weekends i shall give you the support you need to win..lol. That being said is also another reason i like the build and battle option..i can put down a fort and with the help some mini and ginormous turrets i dont really need team work..thats what makes Starhawk stand out..imo..your no longer a pawn being chased by 4 hawks and defenseless.all you gotta do is stack up on the rift energy and you can be a one man army!! im onestly not looking forward to the 32 battles but i will give it a try to check out how big the maps are. This game is AMAZING and again i hope the story line is long enough to impress..and action pack to keep me entertained.

  • I can not wait any longer but I have to! I told myself for years that if there were to be no sequel to warhawk on the ps3 that I would have to pitch it and create it myself. Buahaha. Thank you for letting me sit back and let you all do the work for me :P

Playing the Beta for a friend one night, a friend who has no idea what warhawk is… etc. He was absolutely amazed. “Wait a minute… Youre controlling that mech? What!? It transformed??? OMG! Did you just build that? WTF!” Long story short. He sold his Xbox for a PS3 and will be pre ordering Starhawk with me.

PS – My wife hates you guys.. but I love you xD
