Welcome to the Year 2048

WipEout 2048 on PS Vita takes us 36 years into the future, offering a glimpse at the birth of anti-grav racing — a fictional sport that has become synonymous with PlayStation. Take a look at our new trailer and pay close attention at the start for an impression of what two WipEout ships squaring up on the streets of modern Britain might look like.

In keeping with the theme, here are a few words from Mick Hocking, Vice President for Liverpool, Evolution and London studios, on where he thinks gaming will be in 2048. Mick is largely responsible for the creation and development of such series as WipEout, MotorStorm and SingStar, and is well placed discuss where we have been and, crucially, where we are heading.

At gamescom you appeared as part of a panel looking at the shape of gaming in 2021. The latest WipEout game is set in 2048; what will gaming be like then?
Mick Hocking: Well the pace of change is already so fast. Just look at the advances from PSP to PS Vita. In just seven years we have added touch screens, cross play, next-gen graphics, dual analogue sticks. I mean seriously; that’s pretty incredible.

At gamescom I talked about the potential of mixing stereoscopic 3D with augmented reality. I can see a point where home headsets will become a real possibility. They’ll be lightweight, with high resolution screens and tracking sensors too. Possibly even these headsets’ screens will be transparent, so players can see the real world as well as augmented reality stereoscopic 3D at the same time. So you can have a fully immersive experience, a partially immersive one, or an augmented reality experience with this one device.

And what about portable gaming?
Mick Hocking: Well if we stick with the headset idea, I see no reason why once such technology became established in the home, it couldn’t be modified for portable use. I was playing Heavy Rain recently and thought that the AR technology that Norman Jayden uses to solve cases could be amazing if applied to gaming. Everyone who has played that game remembers the scene when he gets given that pokey office and uses the AR glasses to completely modify the way he sees the world around him. One minute he’s underwater, the next he’s on the surface of Mars, then he’s above the clouds in a stunning mountain vista. Imagine if, by wearing a set of similar glasses, or even some kind of contact lens you could completely transform wherever you are – on the bus, in the park, wherever – into a completely immersive and interactive game world.

What will 2048 bring in terms of software rather than hardware? What types of games will we be experiencing on the portable consoles of the future?
Mick Hocking: Well, I really hope that we’ll still be making WipEout games!

What I do think you’ll see are games that increasingly blur the lines between the gaming and real-world environments. PS Vita is already doing this in a few ways. The front and rear cameras are used to put game objects in a real world setting on-screen, Reality Fighters is a launch title that really shows off this capability. Also the “near” functionality allows you to collect virtual items by passing by real-world locations where PS Vita users are, or have been. Fast-forward 30 years and think back to the AR- style technology we discussed and imagine the possibilities. Even when not actively playing a game you could look around you and spot gaming items, characters, perhaps even entire ‘levels’ to interact with.

I see it this way: Thirty years ago when the only real handhelds were the Game & Watch kind, the kind of power and gaming experience that PS Vita is offering would have seemed impossible. In the future, technology is going to allow game designers to create experiences that are limited only by our imaginations.

  • The way I see it, I think before we can really master or approach the AR field with confidence we’ll have to master a way for gamers to be connected all the time. Right now the 3G PS Vita’s connection capability is a cool way to keep GPS Coords, or Day-by-day turn based games, but the price for it is a little unjustified for the capability.

When we can have handheld gamers walking around all connected to 3G/4G connections and not have to worry about paying for it, then we can really hit AR hard because EVERYONE will be connected all the time, providing more variable player environments for all of us.

I’d like to see AR Features like seeing your favorite characters hanging out on sidewalks or seeing Sephiroth wiz by in the sky randomly. 2048 is far away from now but I think that once we’ve mastered constant connectivity, AR will burst out of control with innovation… i drool with anticipation for it haha,

  • Loving the game on the Vita so far !

Just hope the Cross game play with PS3 comes very soon, so that I can play on my PS3 as well.

  • I love this game. One of my favorites on the Vita. But the network features are all completely broken.
Everytime I start the game it says it cant find a server. I beat a friends near challenge yesterday and it didn’t do anything at all. It also says all my friends are rank Zero and no ones time shows up under my friends. Ive tried connecting through different internet connections as well as 3g, it doesn’t make a difference. Yes I have the network pass thing installed.

  • This is THE one Vita game i am really genuinely excited for. As a massive WipEout HD fan, i really cannot wait to get my hands on this. I’m a little nervous to see all the changes catering toward easier accessibility for new players, but i’m fairly confident that Studio Liverpool kept the game at a place where hardcore fans will still have everything they love about the previous WipEout games.

Can’t wait to race against some vita players online soon on my PS3!

  • Hello, im enjoying the Vita and Wipeout alot!
But it seems that i cant connect to your servers, iv downloaded the online pass etc, and i have a connection to Psn, but it hasnt worked since i bought the game. Please help, because online is where i really want to take this game.
Anyone that know where i should be asking the questions?

I hope i can get an awnser on this problem.

    thanks

  • I’ve been playing WipEout since the original PSone and have been there for every launch date release. 2048 has been amazing and I can’t thank Sony and Studio Liverpool for bringing an awesome Vita launch game. I must say, I really miss the energy pads from pre-WipEout Pure, the Designers Republic and CoLDSToRAGE. Anyway, great job on 2048 and long live AG Systems!

  • Oops.

*I can’t thank Sony and Studio Liverpool ENOUGH for bringing….

My bad, that was meant to be a complement.. ;)

  • i love the game , i think im at rank 20 online , theres one thing wipeout 2048 is missing : A party system , please create a party system from 2 to 4 players so we can invite our psn friends and join an online race together .
other than that the game is great !!!1

    • To play with your friends directly you can do 2 things… 1) either select them from the community screen in game and if they are already playing online you will join them in the lobby – you can play together or 2) Use Party in the system app.. create a party for you and your friends, if one of you then goes in to wipeout and join an online game, you can launch wipeout from the Party app and it will boot directly into their online lobby (with voice chat too).

  • I have a problem, and it’s not with 2048.. its with Wipeout HD. I just downloaded the newest version, to bring it up to 2.40 (The game was downloaded from the PSN) (I also have the Fury expansion)

And now, eliminator mode does not work at all. What I mean is that the AI controlled ships will just race, and not fire at you, or the other AI ships at all. I’ve launched every level under eliminator mode and it’s all the same.

Sorry, didn’t know where else to report this. Wish there was a bug-reporting service for us to use on the PS3.

  • Nice! Looking forward to this asap

GGCAN whats the difference between cross game play and remote play through the ps3 they both kinda looks the same except remote play you can do much more i have 20 ps1 titles on my ps3 that i can remote play through my playstation vita. i just dont get the difference between the two

  • oh my god thanks a lot wilson i didnt know we could create a party and join our psn friends using party app thanks a lot

  • I’d like to buy the game but I don’t have PS Vita yet. PS Vita needs 3D, I love the look of 3D on Nintendo 3DS.

  • i thought id get to play my WipeOut HD on my Vita but not without buying the 2048 version as i now realize… but my thing is.. i dont need two or 3 versions of wipeout. :( no buy for me because i feel im being munipulated.. maybe im not but tonce i get that feeling i cnt shake it loose, guess i just play my ps3 version and play people on THEIR Vitas whereas i wont get that pleasure as a Vita 3G owner.

  • The most recent server updates seemed to have fixed all my issues. Thanks! Loving my Wipeout now! Been a long time fan.

  • Since the Wipeout HD 2.40 update on PS3 I and many, many others have not been able to even play online. Wipeout HD will not connect! I have been trying to contact anyone that will help. Some have said that it is only effecting North America. Please pass on the word to someone that can help! please!

  • Hi! How do you use argumented reality in wipeout 2048? I saw it in a preview but cant find out how to use it. Also, how do you use voice activated weapons? Thanks

  • I’ve been playing this game for a week and I haven’t managed to connect online even once. This is ridiculous!

  • Off Topic:
Are there any plans on making the PS2 classics available for the Vita? I keep hearing different things around the interwebz. Because that was one of the main reasons why I bought mine. I hope you guys at Sony do, after the PS1 classics.
I really can’t wait for FFX hd, and I hope Rogue Galaxy and Kingdom Hearts 1&2 are transferred too.

  • Are you guys considering in DLC adding a new team or two? I’d like Assegai, but I am aware it was established in 2113. But I wasn’t sure if there are any other teams around the time the AGRC started. I can respect if this isn’t responded to, but it would be something nice to look forward to. I understand that they limited it to five teams for a reason, but still just curious.
