Introducing Datura, an Exclusive PSN Game for PlayStation Move

Datura for PS3 (PSN)

Hi everyone! I’m Michal Staniszewski from Team Plastic (Plastic Studios) – yep, the same creators of Linger in Shadows. Two years ago, we were asked to closely investigate possibilities of the PlayStation Move motion controller, which was still deep in its prototype phase. Today, we are proud to present you with Datura, which uses the controller in a quite innovative way.

Finding yourself in a mysterious forest, you will navigate your way through the game by controlling your character’s hand using Playstation Move technology. From here, you are immersed into the game’s unique experimental narrative and original way of interaction, which enables you to experience the world not only visually, but also empirically — an illusion that you can actually touch trees, faces, and other objects.

While taking inspiration from film-like narratives, Datura is a story you get a chance to physically participate in. As you travel through the game, you will encounter choices and face your consequences. It is through these puzzles that Datura explores an element of anxiety: was it a right choice or a wrong choice?

Without going into further detail, I would like to let players have the opportunity to experience Datura as it will be available at the PlayStation booth at the Game Developers’ Conference beginning Wednesday, March 7 through the 9th.

Datura will be available exclusively on the PlayStation Network later this year. Please continue to check back on the PlayStation.Blog for more details. See you soon!

  • Okay… So what it’s it about? Are you a tree hugging hippy? a lot more info would of made this article much better.

  • sounds very intriguing. though i would have liked to see a gameplay video.

so this only uses the move controller, no nav controller needed.

    also, one more thing:

    FIRST!

  • If this game is easy as “Linger” was to 100% it then I’m sold. Also a video would be nice.

  • Do you feel stupid for saying first, or do you not know how to count. But I agree, a video would of been nice, like having a vita game that could do multiplayer.

  • The gameplay demo of “Datura” looked amazing, can’t wait for this

  • Ummm, not even any concept art?!

  • How about a little video, or at least a few screenshots…

  • I’m pretty sure that the ethos of Demo Sceners like Plastic Studios is that the game itself is a type of concept art.

Also, it’s pretty clear from the article that the game is all about not knowing what happens next, a video would kind of blow that hook.

Linger in Shadows was my first PSN purchase. I think these guys are up there with That Game Company when it comes to making software that is pure concept. I’m looking forward to this one.

  • folks, for those of you who are curious, Datura has had a gameplay video on YouTube for 5 months now. Check it out.

  • Sounds interesting. Is this going to be one of those Myst type games? Or is it going to be a puzzle game? Or is it going to be a mix of action and puzzles?

  • Thanks for supporting the move, We need games :) looking forward to seeing more of this game. I hope there is a demo in the future.

  • hopefully their will be some good game play videos tomorrow

  • OK, I’m in.

I need to know why the pig was in the forest and how it then became roadkill bacon.

  • This looks interesting. I love seeing the innovation with the move.

  • @1

Be a bit more respectful. I think the info is fine for a first post.

As for this project, I’m really interested in it. I bought Linger in Shadows way back when it first hit, and I really enjoyed the art direction of it and how ti worked. Though it really wasn’t interactive, I really enjoyed it for what it was.

My question is, will there be Dual Shock 3 support or no? I do not own the move, and I’m not really enticed to purchase it, though I would really like to check out this game based on your previous work.

  • Good first post, anxious to hear more about this one. Linger in the Shadows was the craziest thing I ever saw.

    Kudos @15

@1 You don’t see me criticizing your grammar mistakes or the false analogy of a hippie, well okay maybe I just did. Get a room!

  • I am not finding this video on youtube, but I will continue to look. Maybe I can dust off the move controller that I never use now. Still waiting on Sorcery. Sad that PS fans are so negative when these guys post. I give them an A for courage. I would be terrified to post on here, because of the backlash of negativity that seems to come out of the blue most of the time. I have never seen such a disgruntled group in my life. lol Not trying to judge, just saying.

The floor is now open for backlash. lol Sorry if I made any errors. I will strive to be as perfect as these English professors on the blog.

  • Sorry, I did find it. Thanks to the post on the fact that it existed.

  • Well if it’s on YouTube they could of put a clip or a link or something, it is a PS exclusive. And the info was like…you can touch trees and that’s about it. And I do have a room and it’s better then yours and I don’t hug trees I smoke them.

  • Here’s the url of the video on Youtube, it’s from Sept. 2011 so the game might look different now.

  • Sounds interesting. Would be nice to see some screens. Great name by the way based on what you’ve told us. Are you tripping out the whole game from the hallucinogenic aspect of the Datura plant?

  • lol i still havent finished linger in shadows. can you guys make a neat move capable dj app for the ps3, i would but im too lazy. lol again.

  • First I’d like to say, thanks for doing something that seems like it’ll be a unique experience and it’s even better than you’re using the Move. In what seems to be a great way. I can’t wait to hear more about this title.

Wasn’t a huge fan of Linger in Shadows, I knew going in it wasn’t a game and I thought I’d like it since I usually like things that are different. Just couldn’t get into it, however the artwork was (and still is) beautiful. Music was great too. And I always applaud those who think outside of the box. So I have never regretted my purchase of it.

  • Wow man you guys finally come back. If anyone wants to know about these guys are the1st few devs to release a game onthe ps3 when it 1st launched psn. Linger of the shadows was a odd game with alot good value in it “a classic”. I actually have a few picture frames in my office at work and home of the in game screen shots. Its just a very good game, beautiful as well. It was the 1st game ps3/psn let or allow us to make our own wallpaper directly from the game.

You guys are like legend around here on the brand , dont worry if the new psn guy dont know you who you are they will soon enough.. :), Also linger of the shadows games is one best selling interactive arts game s in the world of psn or other wise. ALot have been waiting for linger of the shadows 2, But i do see this game. SInce i know your work ethics and how guys make it perfect to the end..

I think this be game of the year for psn neck and neck with the jounery. Also welcome back. I know you guys will blow psn socks off agn with beautiful art and images..

  • Also i would like to note these guys allowed the game to use a jet printer on the ps3 to print out in game screen shots of the game to save a s persoanl use . To this day in playstation history no other comapnay has been able to do that.. they also allowed you to take in game pictures as ps3 wall papers or printed on the ajet printer via ps3. I have printed them on a canvas as art pictures in my office and home personally the game is beautiful and odd and the same time.

These guys are very good and I know this game is going to very good. I just want ask a huge favor, come back often it been 6yrs..

  • Datura? Oh god, thats the last thing you want kids googling…

  • hope its thousand times better then linger in the shadows

  • I’m still in shock over that total dooshbaggy remark made by the Leech. Perhaps someday, @Leech, you will create something you put your (alleged) heart & (alleged) soul in, only to have some no-talent, half-wit make an uninformed & worse, not funny, accusation like that. Congratulations on being doosh-bag du jour.

@Michal, thank you for rising to Sony’s challenge. We definitely need more Move games.

  • Oh my God, yes, finally! I love Linger in Shadows and was wondering when this was going to release. The stuff I’ve seen floating around Youtube has got me intrigued.

  • HAHAHAHA LMAO @ 1st commetn by Leech.

@#24 While I agree with your points of view, I found them a bit unnecessarily extremely harsh, I just think that what Leech said was rofl-funny. I’m sure there are always those ppl that bash on smth even with no information on the subject, but skepticism and criticism are good sometimes cause they bring progress. Now I don’t take mindless criticism and skepticism but when someone throws some humor in the mix like “a tree hugging hippy”, then I think it’s okay to read all points of view, lol.

you both put valued views to the table IMO :)

a tree hugging hippy, Gosh, that sounds like something Eric Cartman would say LMAO. Still lol-ing over it

  • @ R0BIN_LEECH

I’ve seen several of your comments scattered here and there on the blog. It’s like the PSBlog is the bridge you live under.

  • I like this company, I really liked linger in shadows as well.

My opinion, sony should invest heavily into this company, if not as a first party at least as a strong second party.

  • @#27 It is! And your moms here too. She said do your homework.

  • Iteration7294531

Heh…yeah, I give Sony props for publishing a game with the name Datura. I wonder if anyone involved with the game outside of the dev studio actually knows what that is. Oisterboy above apparently does as well, though.

  • Wow a new different game for move???? I figured sony has our money from these pos accessories already, that they don’t care bout bringing out any new games for it. This is gonna be a once in a year thing, no?

  • I’m interested. Looks like I have Sorcery and this game to be looking forward to.

  • Yeah, some interesting stuff for move

  • Awesome news, I’m glad to hear there’s still development going on in Move land… I hope there’s more, but also rather than just adding move controls to regular games that don’t need it can we start getting more serious full size Move games along with the PSN releases? I mean not that Datura is underwhelming but think about how cool it would be to have a Noir-ish or cyber-thriller game with this type of interaction… Y’know like back when EyeDentify was a thing we were hoping to see released for the PS eye (PLEASE remember)?? Fancy narrative experiments are welcome and I’ll probably be happy to buy try this like I did Linger, but dont forget original “regular” flights of fancy are still kinda lacking for the Move.

  • Hehe. I’ve seen leak videos of this game on youtube, though I’m still not sure what the game is about, I’m nonetheless intrigued. Looking forward to hear more!

  • I had the pleasure of meeting the dev at GDC, and he let me try it out. IT WAS AMAZING! A very cool, immersive experience. I don’t own a PS3, but this game was one that makes me want to get one soon. Very nice guy, and a spectacular game. Move integration was phenomenal.
