PlayStation: The Official Magazine Embarks for Far Cry 3

Considering our recent spate of deadlines, the PTOM staff could do with a tropical vacation. But knowing our luck we’d end up on Far Cry 3’s island in the clutches of the game’s ruthless and seriously disturbed villain Vaas. Scratch that—knowing us, we’d probably pass on the trip to paradise and curl up in our game cave playing Ubisoft’s engrossing new open-world adventure. Too much sun is bad for you anyway.

April 2012: Far Cry 3

If we were to head out on an expedition, we’d be sure to bring on our shiny new PS Vita. But the real question: What games would we bring? We’ve got answers in our PS Vita reviews feature that breaks down the good, the bad, and the ugly of the portable system’s first wave of games.

We also take a look at the best and worst DLC, and name the 10 Greatest PS3 Games You’ve (probably) Never Played. How do we know you haven’t played these games? Because these are the games that made game critics sing…and game company accountants weep.

Elsewhere in the issue, we take a closer look at Resident Evil 6 after Capcom’s recent announcement confirming a November 20th, 2012 release. And our lead preview of Transformers: Fall of Cybertron seems to indicate that the gaming franchise is trending upward—in direct contrast to the film franchise.

Twisted Metal heads up our reviews this month, and the long-awaited return of the franchise delivers frenetic vehicular mayhem at its finest. And if ragin’ in the streets isn’t enough for you, head to the slopes as we review the new SSX. But the most memorable review game this month may actually be the beautiful, affecting Journey.

It’s all in PTOM’s April issue, hitting newsstands everywhere on March 13.

  • Nice cover

  • Sounds great, I will have to grab a copy!

On a completely unrelated note, I literally JUST Platinumed Final Fantasy XIII-2. Waaaaaay too easy! Great game but geeesh, I remember having to pump hundreds of hours into full completing the older FFs….8 especially. Whatever, psyched that I have the trophy. Check one off my list, and now to get the last trophy needed to Platinum Uncharted 3!

    • Awesome! Good work on the FF XIII-2 Platinum, I never did get around to nabbing mine :(

      Enjoyed the game, though!

  • I really hope this game doesn’t have the FPS issues the second game did. I want a butter-smooth experience! Really excited for this title.

    • Depends on what exactly you consider to be issues, I suppose. Some elements, like weapon jamming (which, personally, I loved as it made firefights dynamic) have been nixed, while new things, like a leveling system, have been added. It’s looking pretty good so far, though—definitely a shooter at its core.

  • Far Cry 3 looks like a lot of fun!

  • I would Like to see a Vita APP…. I would definitely subscribe!

  • So when are we gonna see actual ps3 gameplay. cause reading it and seeing it are totally different. or is ubi gonna do us bogus and only talk show the 360 version just like every 3rd party developer.

    • Hopefully soon! We’ve seen some gameplay reels—it looks just as good as it sounds so far. The only thing I’m a bit skeptical of at this point is the leveling system. Ubisoft may be able to pull that off and still maintain the FPS feel, but I’m afraid the XP and skill points may feel too intrusive. Guess we’ll see :)

  • I would say the game I am most interested in seeing more about in that issue is, Transformers: Fall of Cybertron. War for Cybertron was a surprise hit when it dropped back in 2010 and I hope Fall of Cybertron plays on that success improving certain aspects and expanding on it.

I’m not a subscriber to PTOM but I might check this issue out.

  • hey mr burchill. I liked how you guys are doing articles on games that should be getting proper shine but alot of gamers are not really giving it to those respected games. We need more articles like that every month .

Also i love the cover .Although i dont play far cry fracnshie aolot of ps3 guys seem to love it all i every get in inbox when i get chance to get online is far cry 2 game invites. Seems like i get about 100 a day or more. I feel so dirty when i have to say ” i dont own the game”. Keep up the good work bro

    • Thanks! We always appreciate feedback :D

As for Far Cry 2, that game received a pretty mixed response. At the time of its release, it was pretty different (and remains a unique experience) than most other shooters. The openworld feel, the fact that the player had to constantly deal with Malaria (which became kind of an annoying handicap), and elements like weapon jamming and procedural fire made it a pretty rich shooter. Not everyone’s cup of tea, though.

  • Did i ever tell you, the definition of insanity…?

    • Ah, yes. Vaas’ famous insanity speech from the 2010 E3 reveal. So good! We even interviewed the voice actor (who Vaas is modeled after—they look identical!) in our cover feature. Check it out!

  • sony…..it has been 5 weeks since firmware 4.10 killed your official 7.1 stereo wireless headset….where is the fix?!?!?!? this is OUTRAGEOUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I wish I could get PTOM on iTunes Newsstand.

Sony you should get on that. All we got is the PSM3 UK Mag over there.

  • I am going to predict El Shaddai and Shadows of the Damned are in the list of PS3 games no one played; two games I should pick up myself.

  • Hey Ryan, in your response to LukaX23, you focused on the wrong word in his question. You should have focused on FPS. He meant “frames per second”. There have been a lot of games lately (mainly shooters, which I’m not the biggest fan of) that have been not that great ports of 360 games, and the framerate issues/lag is noticeable to those who play them. If you wanted to address “that” issue for the commentor, then feel free to edit your comment.
Keep up the great work, though. Nice to see so many responses in the comment section. :)

  • I finally purchased a Subscription today.Honestly I have very little idea as to the content, I have high hopes, but mostly I’ve loved the covers you’ve shown.

    • We’re confident you’ll enjoy the content just as much as you do the covers. Be sure to send us some feedback once your issues start arriving!

  • Will do, thanks!

  • Very interested in some add’l Far Cry 3 coverage. I really enjoyed Far Cry 2 (campaign) personally although some of the travelling became a bit excessive, I never got the hang of the gliders and I was obsessed with finding diamonds.

The new game looks a lot more “intense” so that is cool…I just hope the MP is well rounded and has the core elements locked down…decent matchmaking, party system and with any luck, private/custom matches. Any FPS that hits the market without those nailed is just asking to be forgotten about in a matter of weeks IMO.

Far Cry 2 multiplayer was pretty weak, even for its day…so it shouldn’t be hard to improve on that…but it is a lot more competative market now, so hopefully they have some interesting game modes to help them stand out in the crowd.

  • Ok I am hear to request an Ipad/Iphone app to sibscribe on.

Also the idea of having an on Vita app for your magazine is amazing, you guys REALLY need to make that happen!!!

  • I always pick up PTOM day 1 or 2. Already read this issue.

My question is about Qore, I would much rather get a preview about the up and coming issue instead of a 3 week old issue. I undrstand PTOM probably has a turn in date to the Qore team to get it included. Just kinda seems pointless. I hardly ever look at that section since I physicaly had those issues in my hands 3 weeks ago.

    Keep up the good work.
