Greetings From ModNation: Your Mod Postcard Has Arrived!

I was pleasantly surprised by how a half hour walk at lunch provided “fodder” for my first batch of Mod Postcards. A quick jaunt outside the campus revealed unexpected photo opportunities: A putting mini-green? High-rise window washers? I couldn’t have planned it better!

Of course, I knew at least one of the stops on my mini-Road Trip would be well… ummmmm, a restroom*. Shortly after snapping a few shots in the “loo” I found myself being escorted back to my desk by security, where I began to fiddle with my new favorite feature of ModNation Racers: Road Trip – Mod Postcards! As you can tell from the images below, I had a good time unleashing my mod-creativity (read: insanity) and must admit I had a difficult time holding back a few dozen chuckles, snorts and smirks! If my co-workers didn’t already think I am a doofus, they do now!

You really have to give Mod Postcards a try. Get up, get out and you’ll be surprised what you’ll come up with. It’s very simple (yet surprisingly powerful) and it’s another great way to express your Mod creativity.

Please take some time and share with us what you come up with in Mod Postcards!

You can submit your “works of art” HERE.

I’ll be posting more as time goes on. Let’s see what you can do. I know I for one can’t to see them!

(*tip – I highly advise an EMPTY restroom. It cuts down on the number of people wanting to punch you!)

ModNation Racers: Road Trip – Developers Tip #3 “If At First You Don’t Succeed”
So many great themes to work with in the track studio, yet if you are anything like me (I hope not for your sake) you just can’t decide which to choose. Don’t fret, you’ll find your groove by experimenting with quick-changing themes of your tracks. Myself, I happen to be a Jungle Theme man. I’m decent at making tracks with other themes but my go-to, my inspiration, my muse is in the jungle!

Three tracks (listed below) were created by a MNR team member all using the same layout / spline. Track Themes were then switched using different props and set pieces. Download them and see for yourself what a change of scenery can do to produce the track you are looking for.

  • You guys make one heck’uva KartRacer!

Love these ideas, they have put me over the top when it comes to picking up this game.

    • Nice to hear!

I know you are really going to enjoy “Road Trip”! Have fun making some Mod Postcards.

  • Those look like awesome creations as usual and I’m excited to play them. Kudos to the players that keep these games fresh.

I do have to ask though, for a game built around asynchronous multiplayer… why is there no hot lap in Road Trip? I know there’s just random ghosts for most tracks out there, which is cool, but there doesn’t really seem to be a *focus* for the multiplayer. If you look at HSG and Unit 13 they both have daily events and that becomes the asynchronous focus and they are fantastic fun. With Road Trip I’m not ever sure what I’m supposed to do, or why I should care about beating random ghosts on a random track. The whole “online” experience lacks something because of it. Also why can’t I challenge friends directly with ghosts? Or maybe I can and it’s just hidden in that pretty unfriendly front-end….?

    • Hi famousmortimer,

      Good questions.

We will be posting information about weekly community race challenges in the next few weeks. You should also be seeing this in the game’s notification area soon as well.

As far as competing against friends ghosts. In Time Trials you have the option to compete against Global, Friends, Local or just your ghosts at the screen with the glowing Start Race button.

      Hope this helps.

  • Online patch?

    PS3 track pack bundle/discount?

  • Game Informer gave the game a 7, which is probably pretty appropriate for an awesome game with terrible rubberband racer AI and no online.

  • Please tell us you guys are working on patching in online multiplayer. For a racing game in this day and age, online gameplay is pretty crucial to the overall package. It’s really the only thing holding myself and lots of others back from getting this.

  • I second Tustin1’s inquiry.
    PS3 tack pack bundle/discount?

  • I still have not bought this game yet (on PS3) due to the fact It Might get a GOTY treatment with Free DLC. sort of like with what they did with LBP. I’m just in shock they haven’t done it yet. :)

  • Hey Mark,

Thanks very much for choosing ‘Ciudad de la Paz’ as TOTW, it’s one of my favourite tracks I’ve created in a long, LONG time! :D

  • Hey.

Big Modnation fan, so far I’ve owned all the games.

However, I’m wondering if there are any plans for MN Road Trip to have a proper online fuction? The best/online part of Modnation Racers I enjoy these days are the online competetive races and this game has none of that, you can only play with someone in the same room.

Since I live in a small town, with very few people who can afford a Vita and fewer who play Road Trip, unless there is some proper, play against anyone anywhere Online feature added, i will be selling/trading in this game very soon.

Btw, as much as I like the game in general, I’ve also found that trying to play using the default controls for more than 10 minutes makes my hands cramp up like crazy, is there an option to change the control scheme? I’d check the game manual but Vita games don’t seem to have those (it’s like buying a EA game, except they have the decency to at least include control info in there 2 page manual).

thank you for your time and a mostly good game.

    • Hi boomstickbhg,

I’m sure I may be a tad bit biased here but I wouldn’t trade it in. There is a lot of depth to the game that may not be apparent to some at the start. I write this blog.a weekly blog to point out the deep set of features in the game. Give it some more time. I think you will be glad you did.

There are seven control scheme options in the game. Race – Extras – Controller Layout. I think you’ll find the right one.

Hit me up at PSN: ModNationSDVita for some competition!

  • This game would be in my stack of Vita titles if it allowed online racing.
Until then its really not up to par.
I loved the psp and ps3 versions, so id really like to grab this one too.
Update with online and you have another buyer! Ill even buy it new instead of used. :)

  • Mark ur not going to get new mods/karts/tracks as u expect. Ur ONLINE community its not here since theres NO ONLINE! Patch the goddamn game so i can buy it and race against my friends and so i can create and share with them! ur wasting time asking ppl to share when obviously the ppl who bough the game doesnt care about online at all

  • Thank you for the reply, the MNR Monday posts always seem to have some of the best interaction with commentors.

I’m definately in no rush to trade it in, it’s a remarkably good game and being on the Vita it is that much more impressive.

I’ll take a look at the controls you mentioned, hopefully that’ll solve the discomfort issue.

Is the lack of comment on future online expansion a sign that there’s no plan for that?

Thanks again for the reply, you (and any mod blog predecessors) have been doing a very good job on here, I’ll make sure I give Road Trip some more TLC and see if I can enjoy this fun ride even more.

  • Hey, guys, let’s go download highly-rated mods that cruise on the recognition of the copyrighted material they emulate and then let’s go put ponytails all over ourselves and pretend they’re horns and stuff.

  • is there any problems with online server i cant get online during the game for last few days please answer n thank u

  • I was playing online yesterday, racing against the ghosts that were updating as my lap improved, quite cool.

Thanks for the new track recommendations, will give these a try.

I read reports of the loading times having serious issues (upwards of 30minutes) once you get to the later stages in the campaign and was wondering if that is the case for all players? I read the only solution was to wipe the game clean and start again which would be a shame..which is why I’ve laid off progression in SP.

In the mean time I’ve been enjoying the tons of track recommendations from the blog posts and the mod browser but now looking to unlock some additional items. Thanks again.

    • Yep, I am really enjoying the Ghost races. It’s perfect for pick up and play (my personal preference for gaming!).

Haven’t heard about any extreme loading issues.

If you see any great Mods, Karts, or Tracks please let me know.

      Thanks for the kind words!

      Mark.

  • NO ONLINE???

OK SO YOU DON’T WANT MY MONEY???

THAT’S OK NOW I CAN SPEND IT ON A GAME THAT IS WORTH MY TIME, A GAME WITH TRUE ONLINE MP

THAT DOSE NOT TAKE FOR EVER TO LOAD “THE LOAD TIMES IN THIS GAME ARE JUST WRONG”

    P.S. I HOPE YOUR GAME TANKS “SALES LESS THAN A 1000 COPY’S”

Because you can always fool some of the people some of the time but not me.

  • nice one totally agree thinking about trading it in few days if doesnt get fix fix the servers please bc i love this game

  • OK, OK, I GIVE UP! I won’t ask for online play anymore. you guys win this one. I’m in love with this game. i have just order it from amazon. I’m expecting the game to arrive this Friday or the next.

  • This was one of the first things I saw online when I got up today. I’ve got to admit that was a great way to start a Monday. : )

    • Well deserved!

Your tracks make this game even more fun! I have all of them loaded on my Vita as examples of the powerful creation tools and what amazing things creative people can come up with!

      Congrats!

      Mark

  • yes i have mark wilson n i have the problem still please help with it the problemm bc i love this game

  • Wow, you like Jungle theme Mark? I have tried and failed with jungle theme many times, I can never make a good track! This just proves how good the advice is. I love alpine for general use, but all of the themes EXCEPT jungle can be good for me! :D I know all of the top creators like different styles and themes, for example, atheistsw makes great city tracks while Magical_hamster more creates a crazy world to race in. I personally like to create natural feeling tracks. I’m sure some people feel the same way.

So my advice is: Find your strength, sometimes step out of your comfort zone, but keep your strength as your back-bone for your tracks!

btw Congrats on top tracks magical_hamster, well deserved. Same to you ath!

  • You really need to patch in the ability to cycle through the menus with d-pad controls for EVERYTHING.

You can go left in right in the original menu, but then you have to use the annoying drag touch motions to go through the menus. It’s very annoying not to be able to use up and down, how you’d expect up and down to work. Since left and right seem to do just fine.
