LittleBigPlanet Karting is Coming to PS3!

Earlier this year, we cut some cake and popped some champagne to celebrate Media Molecule’s sixth birthday! We’ve had an awesome time during the last six years, seeing how the experiment we started here in Guildford has grown, giving rise to a thriving LittleBigPlanet community. This year will be no different, filled with DLC, plus new experiments from the LBP family for you to play with.

You already know about the fantastic LBP work that Tarsier Studios and Double Eleven Studios are doing on LittleBigPlanet for PS Vita, and now we are delighted to announce today a new LBP collaboration with the hugely talented team at United Front Games who will be leading a new project called LittleBigPlanet Karting! We’ve all seen that UFG has a wealth of racing experience and they’re also intimately familiar with LBP’s cornerstones of “Play, Create, Share.” With LBP’s powerful and diverse toolset in their capable hands, LittleBigPlanet Karting is sure to be an adventure that both LBP fans and kart-racing fans alike will enjoy! We are eager to see what you think of this union and especially excited to see what happens now that you can create in a 3D environment — it’s the start of a whole new LBP world! Have a look at the debut trailer to see for yourself.

LittleBigPlanet! Lots of love!

LittleBigPlanet Karting for PS3

James Grieve, Sr. Producer, United Front Games

Thank you to everyone at Media Molecule, we greatly appreciate the warm welcome into the LittleBigPlanet family. The team here at United Front Games has long been huge fans of LBP and all of the exceptional work done by everyone at Mm. Sackboy has become one of the iconic gaming characters of this generation and to have the opportunity to make a LittleBigPlanet game ourselves is truly an honor.

It has been a joy to collaborate with all of the folks at Mm. Since the project’s inception, they have been great partners in getting to where we are today. Looking ahead, we can’t wait for all of the LBP fans out there to get their hands on LittleBigPlanet Karting. The LBP community is unparalleled in the gaming world for the passion and creativity they bring and it’s going to be exciting to see where they’re able to take this new journey for Sackboy.

Our goal with LBP Karting has been fairly simple – provide a fast-paced experience that captures the best of classic karting gameplay, married with the unbridled creativity of LBP. This new adventure will be accessible to players of all ages and have all of the variety necessary to satisfy both the hardcore and more casual players.

This is an LBP game, so we could never talk about it without mentioning the Create tools. LBP Karting is set in an entirely 3D world that will enable players to create rich and varied gameplay experiences. Tons of familiar LBP gadgets will be present, along with a new toolbox specifically tailored to allow for building in LBP Karting’s 3D world. Along with fan-favorite racing and battle modes, players will be able to modify the rules of the game itself to create completely new modes and challenges. All of this is wrapped up in a community experience that should have LBP fans feeling right at home.

Well, that’s all for now, but we’re looking forward to sharing more news on this exciting new game in the coming weeks so stay tuned for more info and get ready for the new world of LittleBigPlanet Karting in 2012!

  • add me for vita games

  • For everyone wondering if it’s DLC, look it up on Amazon and you’ll see that it’s an actual game by itself.

  • Please tell me the controls will be better with no emphasis on having to drift. Those are my biggest concerns, if it does not control well nothing else is important. If that gets fixed i will buy for sure. Also make sure you can play at least play 4 player local multiplayer.

  • I’ll have to play a demo 1st.. I liked ModNation but I’m far from a fan. I still prefer playing some old Crash Team Racing on the PSN classics. In Kart racing, graphics doesn’t matter, it’s gameplay (well, in fact, too much stuff can lead to frustrations and can make the tracks hard to see and understand). I wonder how you’ll turn in this game. By far what I prefer is the CTR style, a style that ModNation is not too far from, but it’s still far from being as good as a game. Anyway, I’ll see and try before buying.

  • While i do own a ps3, and plan to get this game. PLEASE make one for the Vita! i would buy it in a heart beat! still good news for ps3 users. would be awesome news for vita users if you plan on making one for the vita.

  • I hope they make it so you can unlock the costumes without needing lbp1 or 2. I lost both my saves and I really like the yellow head costume but I don’t want to ace the final boss in lbp again just to use it in this game. Maybe add more than on way to unlock certain stuff, like playing a certain amount of time, or maybe a shop system?

  • I WANTED to love Modnation so much. I beta tested it and everything. And the true problem my friends and I never got too big on it (more than the niftiness of customizable racers) was HANDLING OF THE KARTS.

I was fighting for the game to my friends but at the end of the day….. the karts didn’t handle well enough…there was a spaciness/looseness to the kart that lacked that polish.

Also…there were no FUN weapons.. Look at successful kart games in the past–Mario Kart , Crash Team Racing—there were FUN IMAGINATIVE WEAPONS that made the heat of racing enjoyable. MNR was solid but really lacked that WOW factor for me…and I think Karting games need that wow factor to be successful.

  • Why not call it LittleBigKart(ing) it sounds weird saying LittleBigPlanet Karting. Kinda like if Mario Kart was Mario World/Bros. Kart. Maybe its just me either way this game is a day 1 purchase.

  • Just wanted to log in and say: HELL YEAH! Cant wait to get my sack boy some wheels!

  • Can’t wait !

  • I forgot to say –

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE let me use the ‘X’ button for ‘Accelerating/Gas’ & the ‘Square’ button for ‘Braking’ + maybe the ‘R1’ button for ‘Firing’ stuff to;) I can’t stand & won’t buy driving/kart games if i ‘have to?!'(WHY?!)use the ‘R2’ & the ‘L2’ buttons to Accelerating & Brake:(

  • Too bad there is no Vita version, I would’ve jumped it on this immediately.

  • Sorta feels like Vita isn’t getting enough attention. I mean, sure LBPVita is coming soon (in fact thats why I got Vita), but LBP Karting should’ve been a great oppertunity to be a cross-play game. Plus, Modnation is already out, sure there are a few improvements, but I wouldn’t buy it just of it … that is if it was out at the same time as Modnation. All in all, not a total bad idea, but prob lost a few good loyal players (namely Vita ones). :/

  • I have no doubts about this game, but I have doubts about the formula. LBP was all about community building, and teamwork. You worked as a team to build levels, take down bosses, and complete levels. Modnation was a competition, completely dividing, and dismissing it’s community. Everyone was constantly out to be on the top of the breadboards, destroy competition, and rip works to shreds with nitpicking.

The two will clash, and knowing this I’m going to avoid the whole scenario altogether.

  • Hopefully the CPU can also join in while playing split screen with your buddies. It wasnt that exciting just having 4ppl in modnation without interference by the CPU.

  • I have a question for Mm….

Will this game affect the next game in the lbp franchise? Possibly LBP3D? (thats what i hope it is gonna be) i would like to be able to create 3d games like ratchet and clank and other popular 3d games? If so, expect me to be the first person to buy this. AND LBP3D

  • Awesome to see one of my hometown studios (United Front) featured on the PS.Blog!

  • I am a huge fan of LBP, and play it all the time, and this looks so cool, but i must know if you can just create anything you want like in LBP or if there are only preset objects like in MNR?

  • this game would be awesome just like mario kart..must play

  • Will costumes from LBP1/LBP2 work with LBPK or will we have to repurchase them if they are available for the game?

  • Oh man! This is absolutely mental! (In a GREAT way!)

I LOVE the LBP franchise, and I LOVE MNR. Both have been solid reasons for owning a PS3, kid and adult alike, but also, at the sheer creativity harnessed by both developer and gamer, and the capabilities that just keep opening up with that.

A question, though I doubt you’ll be able to comment on it currently: Will there be some sort of cross-over? Like MNR and LBPK combined? Where players from MNR can transfer over their karts/characters? I feel like probably not because that’s so much creativity from two MASSIVE “create your own” worlds, but man…. the sheer stupid fun of it…. *shivers*

  • Sooo pumped for this! Modnation Racers was the ONE game I could ever get my gf to play with me. I’m a fellow Vancouver native that works in the industry (that ‘small’ building in Burnaby haha)

    1. Please include the option of setting up a 3-5 race type series for offline and online. Was really tedious in MNR to have to only be able to do one race at a time.

    2. If I play split screen online, please let me earn XP and level up (even if it’s just the 1P). I swear I would have probably reached max level in MNR if this was the case.

    3. Hopefully I can import all DLC previously purchased from LBP + LBP2

Massive fan of you guys, and excited for more news.

You’ve already got my money. Good luck!

  • IM REALLY LOOKING FORWARD FOR THIS GAME, BUT WAS THOROUGHLY IT WILL NOT BE COMING TO VITA. IS THERE ANY THOUGHT BEHIND POTING THIS GAME TO SONY”S NEW SYSTEM, BECAUSE THE MORE LITTLE BIG PLANET GAMES ON THE VITA, THE BETTER.

  • this game is goon be cool

  • i needs to be like LBP in everyway possible.i own modnation and never play it anymore the franchise is stale and lacking the things that make games like Mario Kart great.but this game has some serious potential.just from the trailer alone you see them exploring new ways to play a kart racer and i think thats great.dont even get me started on Road trip………..

  • I really enjoyed the hot lap system in MNR. A track would be picked every week for the community to compete for the fastest run. Will we be seeing anything like this in LBPK? I’d imagine that it would be different considering the different game modes being added.

  • I must say, best idea ever! UFG proved their skill with MNR, and now they get to use the LittleBigPlanet IP, this will be awesome. But what is the song in this trailer?!!?

  • awesome can’t wait :D

  • This should be released for the Vita too!

  • The creation related gold trophies were IMPOSSIBLE for people who weren’t the 6 top rated creators in the ModSpot, it perplexed me on how ridiculous the requirements were for that trophy! It caused annoying D4D users and was one of the contributing factors for the failed community of the game, please get the trophies right this time (by making them actually possible) and get the community aspects right – like getting new levels, karts, etc at the top daily instead of monthly.

Sorry for sounding rude here but I really wanted ModNation Racers to seriously succeed but when I saw several community factors when first playing, I knew the community form of the game would fail (at least to the point not intended) and it did, please perfect LBPK’s social and community aspect.

  • Also, it would be a VERY smart idea to add this to the PSVita’s library of games too, what have you got to lose?

  • Do you guys/girls at UFG or Mm know how much of a estimated price in Canada it’ll cost for the game. and HUGE FAN OF MNR and LBP. Hope to see this out in stores in maybe the next 3-4 months. Thanks for making this:):):):):):):)

  • Probably to late to get a response but I found that LBP is a little to tough for someone without a lot of artist skills to make a level wondering if LBPK will be easier to create tracks kind of like MNR. Plus thank you for including a battle mode been waiting for a good battle mode since mario kart 64. please don’t put speed boost in the battle mode wast of time.

  • Hi James Grieve

I got small, but IMO important suggestion.

Can you guys consider to let us create our own offline and online tournaments composed of tracks created by other users?

It’ll make the incentament for downloading other users track a lot higher since we’ll be able to download various tracks and then play them without interruption.

Oh yeah and tournaments with friends are always a blast! :)

  • i love LBP because it is easy to make a level, but hard to make a good one… in Modnation every level is too similar, every “good” level wasnt actually that much better than my own… their needs to be more flexibility, and variety in the create mode. i really wanted to like MNR but it just fell short of my expectations, overall, but mostly in create. this game needs a create mode like Little Big Planet, because MNRs create lasted me about a week, LBPs create mode has lasted me up until now with a few breaks in between, but ever since i got LBP1 two years ago between both LBPs i really havent played many other games to be honest( although i lost all my memory two times!). I want a game like that where i dont get bored or tired with it… :D

  • This is surprising cuz like people are commenting about MNR. I thought that was play create share kart racer. But to be honest i slept on MNR and this i will definitely buy. genius marketing, i say!

  • it looks cool, I’m very intrestested to get this one but some players might bring out a tough race during multiplayer

  • We already have a “Little Big Planet” karting game. It’s called Modnation Racers, and Modnation Racers: Road Trip.

  • Will there be a beta?

  • Sony are very creative with their games. This will be my first LBP I will purchase. Looks very intersting but please try to relese it before August. :)

  • love LBP and MNR, so i am looking forward to getting this game!

  • Hey- Who are you sending the beta to? I like to find out bugs, and, I have in U3 so I got a special background. I just really want to help UFG and MM in snooping out bugs! I hope I can!

    ~Bry

P.S. Will there be a beta?

  • Please please please make it for the PS Vita it would be awesome :)

  • My kids play LittleBigPlanet on a nearly daily basis, and the addition of the Attractogel has been one of their favorite additions to the tool set.
Will the Attractogel make it into LittleBigPlanet Karting? That would be stupendous!

  • WOW! Media Molecule + United Front = ” Awesome” = ” purchase Day 1″

  • Hope that MNR doesn’t die, that series was fun, had great drifting, and imo the best part, it’s art style was great. Light, happy, cute, and at the same time fast paced, fun kart racing.

  • Just saw trailer, looks honestly not much like MNR other than being a kart racer. Looks like what LBP would have been as a racer. Just hope that MNR doesn’t die.

  • l can’t wait (*ب*)

  • Two questions, how will level creation work and how freely will you be able to create? Will it be like level creation be like LBP2 or better? Well either way, I LOVE LBP and I am planning on getting a new PS3 along with LBPK soon! :D

  • just not sure about this game
