PS3: The First Console to Offer Amazon Instant Video

Hi again, PlayStation community. I’m here to bring some good news today: Amazon Instant Video is available now on PlayStation Network, making the PS3 the first and only video game console to offer the service! Head on over to the TV/Video Services category of the XMB, where you can download and install the new Amazon Instant Video app right now for free. Once you launch the app, you’ll have instant access to thousands of streaming and downloadable movies and TV shows for rental or purchase. There are more than 120,000 commercial-free movies and TV shows for rental or purchase, including new releases, classic favorites, major TV shows, full seasons and even new episodes of some of your favorite TV shows the day after they air. Many of the DVD and Blu-Ray titles on Amazon.com are also offered on Amazon Instant Video available through this new app.

If you’re an Amazon Prime member (I am!), you’ll also be able to watch as many of the more than 17,000 Prime Instant Videos as you can handle, at no additional cost. If you’re not yet an Amazon Prime member, you can sign up for a free 30-day trial right there within the app or just sign up—it’s $79 per year and totally worth it.

Our own Jeff Rubenstein got an early look at the app, and he can walk you through it here:

We’re really excited to bring you yet another option for entertainment and one that you can only find on PS3!

  • I haven’t heard anything bad about Amazon. But as someone that already has Netflix and Hulu, what will entice me over to Amazon?

    • Certain content on Amazon isn’t available on Netflix or Hulu Plus. Content like Game of Thrones, The Walking Dead Season 2, Hugo, new movies, are all available. Plus, you’ll get even more if you’re a Amazon Prime member.

  • Can you pay with PSN or Amazon credit? or is it subscription based. I dont have a credit card so yeah cant get NetFlix or any other service.

  • It Only Does Everything! I love my PlayStation 3 more than any other electronics in my room! I am proud to be apart of this great PlayStation Nation.

  • @1 The great thing about prime and amazon instant video, is that unlike netflix/hulu.. if something isn’t offered as streaming.. it is 99.9% available for instant rent/buy, so there is a nice backup. I personally have all 3, but really love what Prime offers (Free Kindle books, frees amazon video streaming, and free 2nd day air on most purchases).. Prime is totally worth it.

@2 you should be able to apply amazon credit….. may be easier to setup your prime account through a web browser beforehand.

  • Also Off topic, Congratulations Mr. Jack Buser Senior Director, PlayStation Digital Platforms!

  • sweet! To think I almost bought a roku.

  • Ive been waiting for this to come to the ps3..if you order alot of amazon and already subscribe to netflix this is a way better deal..

  • Will this be available in Canada?

  • @5 ok, thanks.

  • Thank You!

Love my TV, but my 60LX900 amazon prime app was kinda slow, so happy I can have this is on the PS3.

  • Now I have to decide if I want Netflix or Amazon… gotta check out their selection! Prime shipping will probably make Amazon the winnner.

    • Note that you don’t need to have Amazon Prime to access the content on Amazon. There is a price for each movie you snap up, but Prime does unlock a ton of free content to view

  • If I purchase a specific title on DVD or Blu Ray on Amazon, will I have access to the streaming versions of that same product via Amazon Instant Video at no extra cost?

    • If you have access to an AIV video through Amazon.com, it should be playable with the app since it connects with your Amazon account.

    • Slight Correction: A customer who purchases a DVD or Blu-ray does not have streaming versions at no extra cost. If the movie is in Prime Instant Videos and the customer is an Amazon Prime member, they would be able to stream at no additional cost. If the movie is in the Amazon Instant Video catalog but not Prime, the customer will need to purchase or rent the movie separately from the physical DVD purchase.

  • A rundown of Amazon Prime for those that don’t know of it http://www.amazon.com/gp/prime.

  • Nice add but since I have an HBO subscription…let’s get HBOGo please!

  • OMG this is sweet. I got rid of Netflix after the their last price hike because I already had Prime. Now I can watch Prime on PS3 is awesome. It would be perfect if we could get Prime on the Vita. Or better yet super perfect if we could get HBO GO on either/both of the Sony platforms.

  • See, more awesome stuff for ps3 users. Sony, what about us Vita users. Remember, 1.4 million + of us. Let us talk about another let down. Thanks alot Sony.

  • so how long will it take before we finally get YouTube :(

  • As a Prime’r, this rocks!

  • To bad new movies I still have to rent and cost $4. I’ll just keep using Netflix and Redbox. I’d rather pay $1.20 to rent a movie than $4. Plus all the new shows I watch when they air. This is great for people that want this though.

Now please bring on some HBOGo.

  • Thank you Sony! This will be a great app to have!

@17: Agree. It would really be nice to have a Youtube app like XBOX has, or for that matter please just update the Adobe Flash, it’s very outdated.

  • This is awesome news! I’ve been a Prime member since Christmas but I don’t have any devices to watch the content on our TV. This will be way better than watching it on PC or Kindle Fire.

  • Wonderful! o/

  • I have to commend Sony for offering services like this that most other companies would shy away from for competitive reasons. We know you would love everyone to buy and rent movies from your own video store but that is great that you are open to letting users have access to an alternate service.

  • Great option for people that use Amazon Prime, but HBO Go would get used a lot more. Strike the deal with HBO, Sony!

  • thats pretty cool, heres to hoping it comes to the vita later

  • Wait… so we have to pay for a “Prime” membership if we’d like for the 17k “free views”; but still pay for each movie viewing not on that list, even if we’re already paying a monthly “Prime” fee to begin with? Why would I wanna pay for a subscription that requires payments for the majority of actual content?

  • Such great news! As someone who has Prime membership, I’m very excited!! I only hope to see this on PS Vita now and you’ll have me as lifelong customer. Keep the good news coming!

  • so excited for this, major thanks, have been wishing this would get pushed out, and i’m glad we finally have this. Major thanks AMZ and Sony.

  • @25 – Don’t forget that the #1 reason to have Prime is the unlimited free 2 day shipping for most of Amazon’s products (including release day delivery on videogames). You also get a free Kindle book that you can borrow every month. The free videos are just icing on the cake for me.

  • This is fantastic news! I’ve been an Amazon Prime member for 2 years now. I can’t wait to finally check out Instant Video!

  • As somebody who already has Netflix why would anybody who already has Netflix consider Amazon? Netflix has a much MUCH larger library of instant-streaming movies and TV shows at the moment and if you watch a lotta movies and TV shows the subscription service saves you a lot more money in the long run. Sorry but this is not a good deal anybody considering to buy this junk should look at Netflix first.

  • Nice but i want the ps vita app to, and can you bring me some details of want kind of apps are coming to the vita? Are google making a google chrome web browser version for the ps vita? Are sony taking serious the ps vita? Are sony is making a patch to fix the web browser of the ps vita to enable html5 or flash player to see videos? Are Sony is thinkig in social features and new experiences for the ps vita and next gen console (playstation 4) .Please fix the current issues with your console and then bring this kind of service. What are sony waiting to released a patch to make a cross platform chat between ps vita users and ps3 user? What are sony waiting to integrate ps pus features like cloud services in the vita? What sony are waiting to make a update that the ps3 user can see when the vita users are online and what are playing? What Sony are waiting to make a update for the vita users can send pictures to the ps3 users?? Please make something Sony

  • This is great news. Also, Amazon Prime membership is 50% off for students. All you need is your student email address.

Now PlayStation should pursue an ESPN app.

  • Yeah what PS3 needed, another video rental/store service and meanwhile Xbox gets HBO and Xfinity. Now which services would I prefer to be getting? The only use I see behind this is if when I buy a blu-ray they have a deal for a free rental

  • Just singed up for a Prime Trial yesterday and this great news today. Anyone out there with an opinion on whether I should dump my Neflix streaming and Hulu+ and just go with Prime? I’m thinking the free shipping option is going to help me make my decision.

  • way to kill off the Socom franchise JERKS!

  • I have Xfinity, it sucks. I also have Amazon Prime it is awesome.

Thank you sony, I for one am very happy you guys made this happen.

  • This is a nice looking app. Love my Amazon Prime membership!

  • will canadian users be able to access this app and service??

  • This is a nice surprise. I have Prime, for the fast shipping but I feel the same about Instant Video that I feel about my gaming: why hunch over a Mac Pro screen when I can lounge in front of my Bravia 46″ HX929? Now you’ve made that moot, for the video anyway.

    Thanks!

  • Sweet! As an Amazon Prime Member this interests me! :D

  • I just checked, but I see no link to set up the Amazon app on my PS3…is this something where it won’t show up until the Playstation store is updated later tonight?

    • It should be under the TV/Video Services column in the XMB for now. it will be in the Store with today’s Store Update

  • YES. Finally, the ONE movie streaming service I have subscribed to is available on PS3!

@30 It would only be worth if you had Amazon Prime, which is an amazing service. Sure the Video streaming selection is not as good, but there are still some exclusives that aren’t found on Hulu or Netflix, but you also get free 2-day shipping, $3.99 one-day shipping, and a free ebook a month. Amazon Prime is great for heavy online shoppers.

  • This is fantastic news and another step in the right direction for PS3.

Next: HBO GO , YOUTUBE , ESPN , and SPOTIFY apps please !!!!!!!

  • Been an Amazon Prime member for a few years now.. great they are bringing their video service to PS3 instead of me watching it through my Bravia TV app

  • What happen with HBOGO it was announced last E3? Now the competition has it and we still waiting.

  • AWESOME!

I’ve been asking for this for some time from both Amazon and Sony :-D Thank you as a Amazon Prime and PS+ Member

  • Damn im so long down the list!

Anyhow, is this a USA app only or will it be ported over to us here in EU, i would prefer Sweden if you had to choose just one place to do it in :D
