PS3: The First Console to Offer Amazon Instant Video

Hi again, PlayStation community. I’m here to bring some good news today: Amazon Instant Video is available now on PlayStation Network, making the PS3 the first and only video game console to offer the service! Head on over to the TV/Video Services category of the XMB, where you can download and install the new Amazon Instant Video app right now for free. Once you launch the app, you’ll have instant access to thousands of streaming and downloadable movies and TV shows for rental or purchase. There are more than 120,000 commercial-free movies and TV shows for rental or purchase, including new releases, classic favorites, major TV shows, full seasons and even new episodes of some of your favorite TV shows the day after they air. Many of the DVD and Blu-Ray titles on Amazon.com are also offered on Amazon Instant Video available through this new app.

If you’re an Amazon Prime member (I am!), you’ll also be able to watch as many of the more than 17,000 Prime Instant Videos as you can handle, at no additional cost. If you’re not yet an Amazon Prime member, you can sign up for a free 30-day trial right there within the app or just sign up—it’s $79 per year and totally worth it.

Our own Jeff Rubenstein got an early look at the app, and he can walk you through it here:

We’re really excited to bring you yet another option for entertainment and one that you can only find on PS3!

  • Great news. Amazon Prime now actually seems like a decent investment. If only it was on sale now too.

  • PS Vita YouTube App or Flash/HTML5 support?

  • I’ll just go ahead and assume, as with most new things added to the PS3, that Canada is not included and it’ll prob be a 1-3 year’s wait for a trimmed down, barely worth it version to grace our PSN. That about right?

  • Is this App going to be on Vita anytime soon?

  • I see a lot of people talking about HBOGO. What exactly is HBOGO, and If I already have HBO on Demand through my cable service, why should I want HBOGo? Does it do anything special? The ay I see it, I think I would rather watch a crapload of shows with a prime membership, then be limited to just HBO.

  • YES YES YES YES YES (Daniel Bryan voice) Now Sony can we please get the UFC, ESPN, and HBO GO apps.

  • Awesome. I still prefer Netflix over Prime, due to lack of content. I have both and will enjoy them both.

I all need now is NBA LEAGUE PASS NEXT, PLEASE!!! There is still time to get this built and QA before playoffs.

    Rob

  • Such an awesome surprise! I’m a prime member so I was extra happy to see this news today. There’s tonnes of great Prime content that I can watch now!

  • PS. I hope you release it on the Vita too in the future.

  • I also second the requests for ESPN!!

  • Netflix still puts any video service to shame. Unbelievable value that just can’t compare with any rip-offs like Amazon or poor blockbuster which deserved going bankrupt in (Canada at least) for having ripped ppl off for far too long. Thank you Netflix! And remember the only people who complain about its service are ppl who are so poor that they can only afford to pay internet service that is only called hi speed and performs almost like the dreadful obsolete dial up, therefore their movies and TV shows buffer, where as my service has never buffered. I don;t know would your pay individually for a movie or TV show or pay $8 a month with the catch that you can’t find anything very new. Hmm….

End of part 1 (please shorten your comment to 1250 characters) prompt*

  • part 2 (continued from above):

I go with Netflix still, big deal I have to wait a year or 2 to watch smth new, if i want it really bad theater is still the way to go, or a tangible blu ray. I rented a 3d movie from the PSN video store and it even had its 6.1 audio file REMOVED * GASP!!! w00t? Never got anything again from there. Imagine streaming lets you listen to 5.1 and downloading doesn’t??? Nonsense. My poor subwoofer felt worthless and useless as it was desperately seeking for those awesome low frequency sources but only stood silent and offered TV speakers quality sound. Never again form PSN store and this Amazon just not worth the $, just like PSN videso service when it comes to value vs quality.

  • I wouldn’t even worry about a Canadian version of this. Amazon.ca doesn’t even offer a video service as far as I know.

  • <3 Thank you so much SONY! I have been a Prime member since 2007, I have been waiting for this to be available on my PS3, thank you soooooo much!
    <3

Remember, if you are a college student, and have a ".edu" email address from your University, you can get a free 1 year subscription to Prime, and 50% of a renewal. Looking out for all my Amazon fans ;)

  • Huge add for Playstation. I use Amazon Instant Video for all of my streaming so I am very happy with this move. Thank you Playstation. NOW – Give us HBO GO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • It’s a good add to the PS3, but since I have my PS3 I’ve always been waiting a Youtube app to enjoy all the videos from this amazing service. It’s all I need to say that my PS3 is perfect.

  • This is awesome. I was glad to have this available on my Bravia TV, but was kind of bummed that I didn’t have it on my other TV. Now I have it in both places. $79 a year is a bargain for this service (it includes free two day shipping on Amazon’s products as well). Now Sony need to leverage its assets in the market and get even more services on the PlayStation. Microsoft has been making big pushes with HBO Go and ESPN, Sony needs to get in on more of that. But this is great.

  • @iascdu: Launch the PS3 Web Browser. There’s a direct link to a “lean back” custom version of YouTube right there on the browser’s home page. There’s really no need for a YouTube app on the PS3. You have access to all of YouTube in the browser.

  • I was a bit exicted about this though it was rather slow loading up the preview screen of The Hangover 2. I had to exit out of the software because it seemed to have froze. I’m just glad that Netflix works better on PS3 than anything else! Just need that working smoothly and I’m good.

  • I just registered my device and I have one major complaint that seriously needs to be addressed. Sony needs to set standards for apps and the use of the Playstation Blu Ray remote.

I have a Sony Blu Ray Remote that controls my ps3, my tv and a third device like an amp, but a new service like amazon videos arrives and no one thought to make sure that sony’s playstation remote would be made to work with the application?

I bought this for movies and music so I wouldn’t have to use the controller and here I am using the controller while my remote is just sitting there.

Please go back to the table with the developer of the application and include blu ray remote support.

This needs to be a standard on ALL PS3 Movie and Music applications and you should have a basic function map that all apps follow. Meaning the face buttons, etc provide the same function on netflix, psn videos, amazon, vudu etc,

If circle is your back button of choice each app like hulu, netflix ,amazon etc should use the circle as a back button, etc..

The key here is standards and ease of use. Please work add this remote support.

  • One more thing, I love my Amazon Prime service and I love my Playstation Plus service.

Maybe special discounts for each from time to time for members that have both accounts? Maybe an added bonus for purchasing playstation items through amazon for ps+/prime members?

This would be a great marketing push if you did this for the release of the next console with special bonuses if bought through amazon prime for playstation plus members.

  • Is that your Metro Design? :P

  • Awesome.. guess who happens to be a prime member? :)

What are the chances of this coming to Vita as well?

  • I have a lot of videos on Anazom IV. Will i be about to watch them on my PS3?

  • Thank you to whoever made this possible. I’ve been thinking about becoming an Amazon Prime member, considering that I’m a regular customer on their site. I just needed something more to motivate me, and it seems this was the nudge I needed.

  • All right! good one Sony.
I have always said Amazon Video needs to be on PlayStation, now look. Watching Amazon on my PC monitor did not do the HD shows any justice, finally having this on the PS3 which is connected to a 1080p 240hertz 3D TV will however do the shows justice.

You guys read my mind. Now get this on the Vita, and get Amazon to allow 3D content streaming.
Finally Work on an official Youtube app also, more and more people are renting videos from youtube now, Sony needs to catch that train before it passes by.

Thanks for the Amazon app BTW.

  • In addition to this I would like to see proper flash support added to the browser. This would allow us to view even more internet related video content.

  • I am currently living abroad in Mexico and I am sad to say that this amazon video service is not available here in Mexico yet. Installed it and and started to browse but, when I went to purchase a movie it read my Mexican IP and wouldn’t let me use the service. It’s too bad, really… I have a fist full of money to give but, amazon/playstation won’t take it because I am in Mexico. Netflix started like this and now it is available here but, the movie and TV show collection is no where near as big as the US one is. What’s the deal with that? Anyone know an easy way to mask my PS3 IP?

  • You guys can now mark my post for amazon streaming as implemented now.
    https://share.blog.us.playstation.com/ideas/2010/03/17/amazon-vod-support/

    Thanks!

  • @9: Of course not. Amazon.ca doesn’t even have any digital distribution yet. Heck, you have to use amazon.com just to download stuff for your Kindle.

  • Props Sony for offering something no one else does. Keep it up.

  • I have read the first 50 comments and all everyone is talking about are Prime members. I am not a Prime member nor do I plan om an additional $70 a month. So how about me? What will this service do for me.
And normally I would be asking for HBOgo, too. Except my cable company doesn’t support it anyway so what’s the point. sigh

  • Really need HBOGO and ESPN. Amazon is nice, but the PS3 is really falling behind without those two.

  • @Spyroluver88

Amazon Prime is $79 a year. You get access to a selection of Amazon Video content for free along with free two-day shipping.

All this said, after using the Amazon app, I think I’ll stick with Netflix until Amazon works in graceful degradation into the video. I don’t need a dialog box to tell me my internet connection has slowed down.

  • Great Job Sony! This builds value for the PSN.

  • Can you associate more than one Amazon account with it? My wife and I both have Amazon accounts with content that we’d like to watch on the PS3… is there an interface for easy toggling between users?

The other video applications do NOT have a means to do this (I’m looking at you CinemaNow!); it is a feature that really needs to be added.

  • I don’t recall just exactly how ot do it. But a Prime membership can be “shared” among up to 4 amazon accounts.

I went to my account and there was a link to send a prime invite to a family member. I sent it to my wife and she now has prime on her account. We have not tried videos on both accounts.

  • So…

when is this coming to Canada?

  • Yo Jack buaser.. We want monster hunter franchise on the ps3.. Also a socom hd remake or socom legacy before the year is out .. Those two thing are biggest wants in the playstaion world.

Also if you guyy can get showtime app or hbo.. maybe even cinamax..

Also if possible get e book reader on the ps vita. digital comics as well.. I knopw you cant get youtube , why not another video service we can use..

    thank you jack

  • @ LordRaoh The Sony Blu Ray Remote works perfectly on the Netflix app for PS3. I use it all the time and love it! If it doesn’t work for Amazon, that’s just one more reason for me to stick with Netflix.

  • When is it coming to Canada?

  • I would definitely sign up for Amazon.. If the “Prime” subscription included “New Releases” as part of the deal. As far as I could tell (after downloading app) it doesn’t. Can you confirm this?

  • I’ve been an Amazon Prime member for over a year; and so I’m very happy when I got the email saying I could use my account on my PS3. Thanks folks. I know everyone’s all; Netflix this and Netflix that, but I had a bad experience with them and I’m not going back. It’s real nice to be able to use my big screen TV to watch my Prime movies and shows on now. Something I never got to with Netflix without having to change the monitor cable to the TV every time we did. Thanks again. This is great.

  • Hey Morgan, how bout us Canadian users?? is this gonna be like hulu where only american users get access or will we ALSO be able to access and subscribe to this service??

  • Useless for me as I’m Canadian… When will you simply merge the US/CA content and features? man.. We still don’t have Crackle in Canada on the PS3… Still it’s on the X360 and the internet, and on my iPad/iPhone, but not on the PS3…

  • I only ‘accidentally’ got Amazon Prime, after forgetting to cancel my trial. I was a little chagrined at the time, unsure of the value proposition. But this changes everything.

Looks like their ‘free’ (for Prime) library isn’t as extensive as Netflix Instant, and there is a lot of overlap, but there are a few things on Amazon that Netflix doesn’t have.

More importantly, however, I think Amazon is great because they have the ability to offer *new* content (for a price).

Still going to keep Netflix, but as Amazon’s ‘free’ library grows, they could well come out the winner.

  • This is great news. I love me some Amazon!!!!

  • Helllo Sony I would like expres what has me concerened and my other five close friends, and almost all of my playstation network friends own a Vita we are a little angry with you by the way you are working with the Vita, is too slow we still cant download from our Vitas playstation one games(any) and psp, only some, another thing that hanst been released yet are the aplications Skype, whats happening that skype isnt avaible to be downloaded yet, I hope that for this week is avaible and I would like to know why the other new aplications havent been anounced. Please speak with the Mozilla Firefox company so they develop a better browser for the Vita, or if not a Google Chrome, what we couldnt believe and astonished us was that the Vita doesnt have adobe flash player, and in internet you cant do almost anything without adobe flash player, we cant see videos from websites please in the next update add full support Adobe Flash Player 11.1.102.63, and JavaScrippt belive me you will make me feel glad and all my friends.

  • netflix offers subtitles, psn downloads do not, how about this service?
will PSN downloads ever get subtitles?

  • To Senjutsu_Dav….. yes crackle is available for us in Canada…. go to browser and it is one of the options if you make it fullscreen view!
