Borderlands 2: PAX East Returns to Pandora

Borderlands 2 for PS3

This weekend at the Borderlands 2 booth, we granted PAX East visitors chance to play with two brand-new characters for Borderlands 2 — Salvador the Gunzerker and Maya the Siren — in a new environment called the Caustic Caverns. The Gunzerker and Siren classes have made great strides compared to their counterparts from the original game. Players who choose to play as Salvador will be able to use his Gunzerking ability to run into a crowd with two guns blazing. If you played the first game, you may recognize this as an evolution of Brick’s Berserking skill. Meanwhile, Maya’s new Siren skill Phaselock isolates an enemy inside a phase bubble for a short time. Once you’ve Phaselocked a target, your primary choice is whether to focus your fire on the helpless foe before it breaks free or mop up any other threats nearby. Decisions, decisions!

Borderlands 2 for PS3

Borderlands has a strong history of co-op gameplay and that’s still a core promise of this game. At PAX, we watched as Siren players Phaselocked an enemy, leaving an opening for the Gunzerker buddy to run up, dual-wielding, and take out the target just in the nick of time. I’m also happy to talk about our new setting for this demo, the Caustic Caverns. From the beginning of the project, we’ve wanted to explore a wider variety of unique environments and locales on the planet of Pandora. As different and cool as the Caustic Caverns are, they’re just a small taste of the diverse environments to be explored in Borderlands 2.

We’ve overhauled our user interface, too. The new inventory screen allows for easier comparisons between gear and offers a more streamlined layout in general, and an additional benefit of the change is a more natural layout for split-screen players – no more manual “pan-n-scan”. And by popular demand, there’s now a minimap on screen!

This is Borderlands, so you know we’re aiming to include lots and lots of guns. What’s new about Borderlands 2 weapons, though, is that they’re much more supportive of any given play style. Hate long reload times? Try a Tediore gun. Prefer sturdy, burst-fire weapons? Pick up a Dahl-branded weapon. We’ve made sure that each weapon manufacturer brings something unique and interesting to the table. Finding the perfect combination of gear for each situation is all part of the fun (especially as the Gunzerker!)

Borderlands 2 releases on PS3 this September 18th and is now available for pre-order at your local retailers – keep checking the Gearbox Software Twitter, 2K Twitter, and Borderlands 2 Facebook for more information regarding the game!

I second VanillaGorilla’s comment, this is most definitely my most anticipated game of the year, and since I’ll be giving all of my money to my soon-to-be-wife following our crazy European/African mega wedding-honeymoon combo, it’s the only PS3 game I’ll be purchasing for the rest of the year. This doesn’t disappoint though, as I’ve got an extensive backlog of games to complete, and I’m hoping for a handful of Vita titles that will be worth picking up, both announced and unannounced. Even if the Vita titles fail to impress, there’s plenty of hours in Borderlands 2 to keep us entertained until Christmas, where maybe my buds and my then wife can help get me caught up :)

Wow this looks great! Wait, what’s with the sword in the first picture? Probably an enemy facing off against a wild enemy right? Swords would be cool :P I have a huge backlog of games to sift through so not much new games will catch my attention even though I did get the platinum for Borderlands 1. What did stop me from playing was when I downloaded the DLC, joined my friends game (he was host) and then received all the missions he was working on for the DLC. Okay whatever, he just needed help with the glitched mission (keep your insides inside) which I had now (which won’t go away). But when we parted ways, those missions got stuck with me! So I felt completely unorganized and stressed and just left the game. I’d love to hear news about you fixing the mission structure for CO-OP sessions, where we don’t keep the missions in our log after we leave our buddy (the host). I want you guys to persuade me to get this game! I love the people at gearbox! =D

Oh yeah, and my soon-to-be-wife and I can finally play with our other friends, since they finally brought us offline/online simultaneous co-op, those folks at Gearbox are the greatest!

Is it gonna be a TPS mode option?

1) What types of vehicles will we be able to drive?

2) When are you going to provide more detailed info on Zero (Assassin) and Axton (Commando)?

3) Will B1 players get any special things in B2?

4) Will there be any combat on the water (or underwater)?

5) What will the $150 special edition contain?

6) Please provide details on the new Mechromancer class.

Thank you in advance.

Can’t decide between Siren’s phaselock and gunzerker’s dual wield + constant ammo/health regen.

So glad that Diablo 3 comes out in May so that I will have a few month to play it before Borderlands 2 comes out. It’s going to be hard to choose which one to play once they are both out. That and The Witch and The Hundred Knights coming in early 2013, so many Loot Based games, lol!

The hacks really ruined the first game from being better. I hope that isn’t going to be in this version too. Also that glitch on General Knoxxx DLC was game breaking. Thanks a lot for that, you need some real testers over there at gearbox.

Yea man, this is most certianly one of my most highly anticipated titles ever. At a time when the FPS competitive modes grew stale, i wanted co-op modes more and more. Then Borderlands came out with online drop in drop out Co-op plus split screen and just blew me away. I got addicted to it very bad, i hate to see what this one is going to do. Day one buy, will pre-order this sucka too.

You’ll get my pre-order as soon as the collector’s / limited editions are revealed in full. Any date or date range for revealing them?

+ Mythodix on April 9th, 2012 at 6:13 pm said:

Just don’t give Borderlands 2 the same kind of start Borderlands had on PS3 and I think this game can contend in GOTY

As far as I understand, Zero is mute, and uses emoticon holograms to communicate. But then, how will he have epic one-liners? One-liners make or break the game.

+ Hooligantuan on April 9th, 2012 at 11:38 pm said:

I’d still like to be able to play as the original cast. It’s great that they’re at least appearing in the game and all, but Lillith and Mordecai had some good skillsets and were a lot of fun.

Still have it preordered and all, but yeah.

I am a grown man, with two daughters, a wife, a career…and I gladly admit that I will be taking the day off when this game launches. I am VERY active in my daughters lives, so it’s okay if Dad takes them to the babysitters for the day while I play Borderlands 2, right? Haha
