The PlayStation Recap – Burning Skies Edition

Rey and I spent much of this week in New York City taste-testing a batch of upcoming games, including Resistance: Burning Skies, Metal Gear Solid: HD Collection, Sound Shapes, and Street Fighter X Tekken for PS Vita (plus DUST 514 and Starhawk for the venerable PS3). It was a productive trip, all in all, and you’ll be seeing the fruits of our labors on the Blog very soon. In the meantime, if you’re the impatient type, you can read up on Starhawk’s campaign right now and listen to Lightbox Interactive President Dylan Jobe talk turkey on the new PlayStation Blogcast.

In other news this week, The Pinball Arcade for PS3 and PS Vita bolstered PSN’s pinball chops, Qore signed off with a series finale, World Gone Sour brought some tarty platformer gameplay to PSN, PTOM shows off its Sly Cooper cover, LittleBigPlanet’s new weekly community update served up a stack of top Media Molecule picks, Gearbox Software dropped by to showcase Borderlands 2, the Starhawk team showed a way to score free DLC, Escape Plan for PS Vita updated with free new content, and Stardone Extreme announced a PS Vita version that’s hurtling towards a PSN release next week.

What are you playing this weekend?

  • I’m playing: Mass Effect 3 Multiplayer (I can’t stop!), Resistance: Burning Skies multiplayer, DUST 514, Street Fighter X Tekken for PS Vita
  • I’m watching: Homeland, The Cabin in the Woods
  • I’m reading: 11/22/63 by Stephen King

    • Playing: DCUO (PC version, the PS3 one is hobbled beyond hope)
      Reading: Chronicles of Pyrdain books
Watching: Pulling (whole series – hysterical stuff!)

Sid, I have to say, but being a once loyal, decade long PS fan sitting on the fence till the Vita launch (shelved my PS3 after the delayed localization of WKC 2 till about December of last year), I find myself again disillusioned with the brand. Such a strong product, great hardware, ATROCIOUS software and support. 4 months of waiting and that last update was a joke, pure and simple. No one wants CAPS lock, they want the friggn’ remote play that was advertised and is now being verbally obfuscated and denied to various degrees. More embarrassing is that pirates/ hackers have enabled this feature on hacked PS3s with EVERY title. Hire THEM to give instruction to your engineers, since SCE seem incapable of enabling the feature. Newsflash, people playing PS3 games on Vita are still buying games. Money is good. Got it?

Next gen, I’ll be passing on the PS4. I have a PC that runs laps in 1080p around whatever hardware comes next, guaranteed. Oh, and it has a tv out. You know like every other modern electronics device in existence. Sans Vta.

    • At least you’re releasing Legend of Dragoon. You know, another great property that has neglected this gen for shooters. Because, you know, we have so few of those on the market. Why not make a AAA JRPG? At least the market is less crowded for those. Only competition are SE, and they’re the Michael Bay of video games, no challenge to true quality. Look at how well Dark Souls, Demon’s Souls did. Why? Because its different, its fresh. Even Graces F sold well for a year old Wii port (more than double the Wii version world wide, almost the same sales as Japan in North America alone)

Wild Arms, Legend of Dragon, Legaia, Demon’s Souls (Sony actually own that IP), so many opportunities to make something different. Oh, and not to sound spiteful, but I hope David Cage goes multiplat just because Sony waited so long to secure him as 1st party.

    • I agree with #12 ….in a point.
I for one hate hackers….BUT its true that Sony Hasnt developed ANYTHING good for the ps3 updates… Sony should Hire this guys and assemble a group dedicated only in ps3/psvita updates which adds more functionality to our beloved systems. They do it fast and b4 anyone else. How is it possible that hackers can get the stuff done and the developers of the system not??? C,mon… Sony u can prove these hackers that u are better than them… but if not… then HIRE THEM!

    • Glad you’re going to be playing Mass Effect Multi-Player. I agree, its way addictive, especially since the new expansion pack has been out. One question though …

Any idea why BioWare has said Sony won’t allow the PS3 to participate in the same Weekend Multi-Player events that they’ve been running on the 360 and PC for the last month? Yeah, I suppose it doesn’t make a huge difference since each platform is playing separately, but it still sucks to have missed the opportunity for two N7 weapon opportunities (so far), and a few free Multi-Player packs (like a free Resurgence pack available on the other platforms THIS weekend).

Hate to say it but its giving the PS3 (and Sony) a bad rep.

    • btw how much does a Vita dev kit cost? Is it available to everyone like Move.me to does it need to be licensed. I have a ground breaking idea that’ll boost Vita sales like crazy but u know….I want the money and my name in it:D

    • Saw The Cabin In The Woods yesterday, very very awsome horror movie. The best horror movie in A long time. I easily give it an 10 out of 10. I won’t spoil the movie for anyone else who has’nt seen it yet, I was surprised by an actress that had an cameo in the movie. I defintley go see a few more times in theaters and get the blu-ray when it releases.

    • How about some Legend of Dragoon avatars that are bundled with the game and/or sold separately?

I can’t wait to relive my early days with LoD!

    • I am Playing: Yakuza 4, Yakuza Dead Souls, ME3, and thinking about going back to Skyrim.

I am watching: Grimm, Fringe, just to name a few. (eureka is back on monday)

I would like to know if we can still get some PSP love? How about PSP Imports? Yakuza Black Panther 2 just came out in Japan about 3-4 weeks ago. Don’t change nothing, just a import.

I haven’t played with my Vita to much in the past couple weeks either. I hope Mortal Kombat changes that. Along with Doctor Who. Any word on cross-play with Doctor Who?

    • I’m listening to: Not Metallica, I would but it’s not on Music Unlimited. I have all my other bands. Except album IV of Godsmack, yet it’s the best one.

I’m watching: 2 Broke Girls, Hawaii Five-0 (New seasons), Vampire Diary (it’s like Angel/Buffy minus Twilight), Flashpoint, Jordan Carver (Model, I know I have Girlfriend, but she’s awfully Cute…)

I’m Playing: Uncharted 3, Resistance 3, White Knight Chronicles 2, Soul Calibur 5, Assassin’s Creed Revelation, Final Fantasy XIII-2, Multiple free PS+ Games since Feb, Super Stardust Delta and more…… And soon will be playing Starhawk and Dust 514.
Too many games, lol. Vita games are going to have to wait since I’ll be getting 2x 750Gb for my PS3s.

I’m reading: accurate info on PS in PSTOM. Reading crappy rumors on the Internet about gaming in general…… And had enough of them. I tell you, if they make a Rumour about a Disc-Less PS4, I’ll be LMFAO on that one, because it would be complete nonsense.

    • I have to agree with #12 on most points. Sony makes better hardware, the ps3 has better games but when a hacker makes something everyone wants (remote play) and sony simply says its not them but the game developers that have to do it it gets you thinking about the most important part: Software.

Even though i dont like apple, it has made a name for itself almost on good software alone (I say good because most people that have it like it, despite the limitations). When the vita launched we everyone thought that psone classics will come soon and that it would already come with remote play, but none of these happened.

I’m playing: SWTOR and Virtua Tennis 4 (surprisingly fun and hard game)

I’m Watching: 2 Broke girls (the best comedy series this last season) and Game of Thrones

I’m reading: A song of fire and ice
