Thanks to the storytelling wizardry and storytelling chops of J.J. Abrams and Bad Robot, one of the most beloved sci-fi series in history teeters on the brink of a renaissance among fans and newcomers alike. With Star Trek for PS3, developer Digital Extremes is crafting a standalone story that takes place between the 2009 film and the upcoming sequel. The hope: to boldly go where no licensed game has gone before.

Star Trek is a cooperative third-person shooter, but that description doesn’t do the game much justice. The two controllable characters, Captain Kirk and Spock, both experience the story differently, with branching paths and narratives that will give the game a substantial amount of replay value. Each character is also equipped with their own individual weapons and skills, each complementing the other in a variety of ways. For instance, Spock’s Vulcan mind meld ability allows him to turn foes into allies, forcing oncoming threats into vital offensive allies. Kirk is equipped with a more direct and offensive weapon set, allowing him to take the initiative in firefights while Spock flanks to perform more strategic maneuvers.

Kirk has both ‘stun’ and ‘kill’ settings for his phaser, making him a versatile ally. Each setting can be upgraded as the game goes on, giving you the power to decide what strategic path to follow. The same goes for Spock as well, though he’s more naturally equipped for stealthy maneuvers.

Though the game is still a ways off, Digital Extremes presented a live demo for a large crowd at Namco Bandai’s Gamers Day event in Las Vegas. In the demo, we were treated to a scene pitting both Kirk and Spock against both space itself and a number of enemies aboard none other than the U.S.S. Enterprise. On two different screens (each controlling one of the characters), the demo began with both characters careening through an asteroid field with nothing but their spacesuits to protect them from the vacuum of space.

The entire scene was fully interactive, with each player forced to avoid asteroid clusters or risk a quick death. Inside the Enterprise, while searching for clues as to why the ship was under attack, the characters scanned the environment using the series’ signature doohickey: the Tricorder. Creative Director Steve Sinclair stressed that the do-anything Tricorder will be integral to the player’s journey throughout Star Trek, and it will come handy for scanning fallen allies and anomalies throughout the environment. Another sequence showed Kirk and Spock pinned down in a desperate firefight, and here the team showed the cover-based shooting and fluid third-person shooter mechanics. A variety of weapons were displayed, from death-inducing phasers to weapons more useful to paralyze than obliterate.

Star Trek will also support full stereoscopic 3D on PS3. To pound the point home, Namco Bandai Games even presented the entire gameplay demo from start to finish in full 3D — set your phasers to fun.

Star Trek is slated for a Q1 2013 release, so Trekkies (or is it Trekkers?) can look forward to a new tale in the storied sci-fi franchise soon.

  • This title went off my radar for awhile. Glad it’s still in production… there’s plenty of room in the gaming industry for more Star Trek. Please, just do it RIGHT.

  • Been following this since it was announced and think it looks great so far. I read that we’ll be getting confirmation of both the Spock and Kirk voice actors being in the game at E3 this year too, which is great! Hopefully they can get everyone else if any other prominent characters should appear…

  • This game is still supporting move? Right?

  • Okey just saw the move icon in the trailer :).

    • Hi kivi95, Namco didn’t show off PS Move functionality during their demonstration, but you’re right, looks like it’s still coming!

  • Interesting, I recently found interest in Star Trek Online since it went Free-To-Play and now this. I liked the relaunch movie. Ill have to check this out.

  • Questions:

    1) Will both characters have any martial arts/ hand-to-hand fighting skills that can be upgraded?

    2) Will Kirk or Spock be able to interact with other USS Enterprise crew members like Uhura, Scotty, Bones, etc?

I truly hope that this game will not be some idiotic piece of garbage with the Star Trek name attached to it. Please prove me wrong, Namco Bandai.

  • @Andy: Will the game allow single player, with the AI controlling the second character, as in other supposedly co-op games?

  • I would LOVE to play a really, really good Star Trek game on the PS3:P Hopefully this will be cool;)

  • Andy, any news on if they got Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto to do any voice over? Cause IMO, nothing kills a movie/tv series tie in game quiteas much as bad voice acting. My interest is piqued, but I will take a wait and see approach. I have been burned by other tie in games before, cough *terminator salvation* cough!

  • Splitscreen?

  • looks awesome!!! :)

  • Gahh, that looks awesome. Too bad it’s quite a ways off :(

  • Looking forwared to the Dr. Who game more than this, the 1st movie which was 2008 btw, was just bad. Seriously it looked like Ed Wood came back from the dead.

  • Awww

  • The E3 trailer looked pretty impressive and this trailer is not bad at all! Might be one of the few games that releases with a movie and turns out good.

  • The environment looks quite Killzoney .

  • Another freakin shooter? For Star-Trek? Someone must tell me what you see in Star-Trek to make it a shooter. Total disgrace of the licence if you ask me.

  • i wish Playstation would release old Star Trek games that came out on SEGA

  • On the one hand I think the world needs more Star Trek games.

On the other hand, J.J. Abram’s Star Trek is a horrible movie and I’m not looking forward to the sequel at all. Though it can’t be worse than the first one I suppose since Damon Lindelof is writing the sequel and not the two hacks who wrote Transformers.

  • There are some Star Trek Uniforms that were made for Playstation Home in Europe. A few of the clothing were released in North America. Would it be possible to rerelease these in Home as part of your marketing push? They are already made. So you don’t have to pay for constructions. But almost no one have them because the giveaway was done half ass with almost no advertising and only a 3 day window. Most everyone missed it.

The following rare Star Trek items are already built for Playstation Home: There’s a Full Star Fleet uniform for males (shirt, boot, pants). There is a gold shirt, a blue shirt and a red shirt. And also a sleek Kirk black cadet shirt. For females there is Uhura’s red outfit (red top, skirt and black boots) along with a female blue top and black pants.

There are also some black Trekkie fan shirts with a Star Trek title logo on them. Another with the Trek shield shape. Both come in male and female.

I hope you can bring them all! And bring them back. I know alot of people would LOVE to have them. That would certainly juice people up for Star Trek! Include them bundled with your game or as reward unlocks. Or just plain sell them in Home. Trekkies in Home REALLY want them!

    Please make it so!

  • OH! There is also a NCC-1701 Enterprise trophy ornament in Playstation Home. But it is extremely rare. Only 3 people have them in the entire world!

How about giving it a new texture/color and releasing that too?

  • LOVED the J.J. Abrams Star Trek movie. It was, imo, the best Star Trek movie EVER (and that saying a lot considering Wrath of Khan and First Contact). I think the Abrams movie captured the FUN and WONDER of the orignal TV series like no other Trek movie (or even its sequel series) had. And this is coming from someone who really loves TNG, DS9 (especially), Enterprise, Wrath of Khan, etc. Abrams Star Trek was amazing.

I can not wait to see the next movie. I’m sure it’s going to be great.

I really hope this game is fantastic. There’s never been a really GREAT Star Trek game. I’m crossing my fingers for this one. Hope its fun! :)

  • Shut up and take my money!!

  • looks great
