  • Unless this game is more epic than GOW3, which is nigh impossible, I wouldn’t bother with it. The trailer tells absolute jack-all.

  • @cloneofdan it’s obvious we can go back and forth on this, but I never implied a development team doesn’t make mistakes, I only said it’s likely they’ve looked at the same valid points you bring up on how, if this is a prequel, it can remain relevant and profound, offer something to the story.

I simply outline the point that I don’t necessarily care about the events that transpired. Sure, I know how GoWIII ends, but that isn’t to say I wouldn’t be interested in Kratos prior to these events, even if they don’t directly tie into the various story elements. Wouldn’t that be the greatest diversion, a story that tries something new by expanding on a history that has only be referenced in whisper, ambiguously at best?

For all I can understand in your argument, your only concern with the series is continuity in storyline as it pertains to Kratos’ servitude, uprising, and ultimate vengeance against the Gods of Mt.Olympus. I can give you that, but what motivated the man before this mission? Why is any of that any less important to defining a character that, previously, has only been motivated by revenge and rage?

  • As for my view on GoS, that’s subjective for sure, but to me (as I outlined in my reply to MarinoBrea, the more intimate focus of finding his brother was a change of pace that was both welcome and refreshing. In that way, to me, it was profound.

  • I was kinda hoping for a ps vita god of war game but a ps3 one is just fine.It would be AMAZING if they would make a cross platform god of war with this new one but thats all up to SMS. Keep up the good work Sony and Santa Monica Studios…hopefully we shall be seeing some news about Syphonfilter very soon ;)

  • I’ve never played any GoW games, but im very interested. Please release GoW 3 on PS store so i can buy them all!

  • NERDGASM!!!!!

I want to see gameplay videos!!!!

  • Apparently this is no simple Prequel. Time Travel is rumored to be a big deal in Ascension.

Interesting. i wonder if they’re gonna get all back to the future/star trek on us … you know, time paradox, upsetting the space-reality continuum, multiple kratos & stuff :)

btw, gameplay on April 30 & Release date of Spring 2013 :)

  • @ SarshelYam

What you said was “wouldn’t it also be foolish to think that the team hasn’t considered this?” to which I pointed out that teams can, and HAVE, made bad decisions in storytelling in the past.

You mention that potentially this could be a great diversion, exploring a history “that has only be referenced in whisper, ambiguously at best?” But…there’s been NOTHING ambiguous, or whispered, about Kratos’ story as told. Frankly, it’s only been told in cutscenes because it’s just so simple.

*He became the youngest captain in the Spartan army. Through, one presumes, military merit.
*He commanded a massive army that had lots of battles and conquered a lot. This army came to a sticky end at the hands of a larger barbarian army.
*He willingly becomes Ares’ servant, and then massacres a lot and has lots of battles.

If the game is “the Rise of Kratos until the barbarian army”, it’s doomed to disappoint, because we know exactly how the story goes and it’s all either utterly predictable, OR we get told a lot of new things but the reset button will kick in and it won’t matter in the great scheme of things.

  • I KNEW SANTA MONICA WAS WORKING ON GOD OF WAR WHEN I SAW THE EPISODE OF THE TESTER 3 WHEN THEY VISITED SANTA MONICA STUDIOS AND THEY HAD A HUGE GOD OF WAR LOGO DISPLAYED ON THE BACK WALL AS THE MONITORS WERE BLURRING OUT THE GAME FROM THE VIEWERS, i so called it. so did. and im so excited, I beat all 5 other GOW games on normal.

  • if this is a prequel, then that means more GOW for ps4. am so happy right now. please gameplay

  • Oh god i cannot wait!!
    He is Back!!!!!

  • By the gods!
    Cant wait!

  • I don’t think this is going to be a prequel, otherwise the “Will Vengeance Bring Retribution” teaser wouldn’t have made any sense.
I believe it’s going to mean that Kratos Goes back in time to before he Killed his wife and kids and Breaks his Blood Oath with Ares before he’s manipulated into killing his family.
Otherwise the Teaser released earlier in the week just doesn’t make any sense at all.
Not only that, but that would be an amazing storyline to play, because ALL of the gods would still be alive, and Ripe for the Killing all over again!!! but in new and possibly more gruesome and wonderful ways?!
    Oh! I’m SOOOOO Excited!!!!! :]

  • @101 what do you expect them to reveal everything? A trailer never reveals much and for g ood reason. Considering god od war 3 did nothing to i,prove on 1 and 2 there is a lot of innovation they could inject in the series.

  • @94, no adding MP does not always effect SP, see uncharted. Uncharted 2 better then 1, 2 also had great MP 1 never had Mp at all. Proven WRONG

Adding MP is a sensible thing to do if done right. Imagine playing with a friend, having leaderboards are trying to beat friends scores ina kind of survival mode? Imagine fighting friends in an arena ala Street fighter.. If you dont want that while still having epic SP you got issues.

  • @94 having unlocks playing over the exact same areas and same story is NOT much replay value, very few play a SP game for useles unlocks. Having MP and coop adds almost limitless replay value, all the while not having to effect a great Sp story, ALA Uncharted, and a plethora of other games like Dead Space and on and on.

  • SAW THIS LAST NIGHT ON TWITTER!!!!!!! AH YEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA. 3D TOO…………MORE THEN SOLD………B3YOND!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • The narrator is telling us something about saving his family, and it doesn’t have much sense because Kratos didnt kill them yet IF it is a prequel.

The adds posted before the announcement say “nothing will bring them back”, or “will vengeance bring redemption ?” It is a sequel; and and after his vengeance (killing all the gods) is completed, he will search redemption.

The game will take place after GOW3, and the player (and maybe Kratos too) will most probably realize that by the end of the game when they show us the new bosses of the new trilogy. In the game you will be re-experiencing past events in kratos life, and maybe that is because the bosses behind the curtain are playing with his mind…..torturing him by making him to believe that he can safe his family; when he CAN NOT. He will notice some wierd things here and there during the game; that will make him realize something is wrong. He will get redemption by making an atonement for the things he has done in the past.

I think SSM is pulling a NaughtyDog here. One team helmed by Todd is making GOW: Ascension, while a second team helmed by Stig is making GOW4. And probably Ready at Dawn is re-making GOW: Betrayal for PSVITA :D

  • SOLD! 8D

  • Hell yes. That is all.

  • I absolutely cannot wait to hear more about God of War: Ascension!

  • ALSO THE KRATOS SHOWN IN THE TRAILER (as you can see towards the end) IS “FEAR KRATOS” so…..IT IS A SEQUEL!!!!!

  • Another new GOW game director I wonder what happen to Stig.

  • Man, I just have to say, I’m really happy to see Todd as the Game Director this time around!!

With Todd having been with God of War from the beginning doing scripting, combat and design, I feel he’ll be able to make this the best God of War game yet! (The first is still my favorite)

About the game story itself, who’s to say this is a pure prequel. Why can’t the game take place after God of War III with Kratos in some sort of afterlife purgatory-type setting coming to grips with the things he’s done in the past whilst trying to find a way out of the purgatory he finds himself in? That could explain why the teaser seems to be all over the place as far as the timeline goes.

    Just my 2 cents ;)

  • @ DZORMAGEN. What are you taking about? This isn’t before Ares. Have you forgotten that Ares gave Kratos the
chain blades? By the I love all the premature negativity in this article. This is what i love about this gen. Condemning a game before you even play it or know anything about it. I don’t know where we went wrong as gamers. I really don’t.

  • i hope this doesn’t disappoint me like ninja gaiden 3.

  • CANT WAIT FOR THE GAME!!!! WHEN SHOULD WE EXPECT THE RELEASE DAY?

  • @Kchow23 geezus share the blog for others… i tend to hate prequels but with god of war im a sucker. from what i can tell if kratos doesn’t have his iconic chains of chaos he must have a shield, bronze sword, and spear due to the era and im guessing that his attire will probably be different especially when he’s the commander of the spartan army. this game is before ghost of sparta and after chains of olympus if i remember from the trailer saying that which doesn’t make sense to me because chains of olympus was pretty much serving the gods and hades’s wife back story and ghost of sparta which i really don’t know much about other than he’s looking for his brother and the gods lied to him. so in order: chains of olympus, ascension, ghost of sparta, and god of war 1 through 3. what would kratos do in that time probably how he got the mark may be i don’t know but im looking forward to the 2013 release. PLEASE PLEASE SANTA MONICA MAKE A NINJA GAME!!! WITH THE EXPERIENCE OF GOD OF WAR THE NINJA GAME WOULD BE AWESOME CAUSE THERE HASN’T BEEN A GOOD NINJA BASED GAME SINCE SHINOBI IN MY OPINION I ALWAYS WANTED TO SEE A GOOD NINJA GAME BASED IN JAPAN AND ONLY JAPAN OLD AND MODERN ERA SO PLEASE THIS NINJA WOULD BE EXTREMELY HAPPY!!!

  • @kchow23

“I am very hopeful that this God of War will finally innovate and push the game forward from the formula that is has been stuck on since God of War 1. Time for the story to finally evolve from just anger and revenge as well as the gameplay itself. Innovation won’t kill you guys! Moreover, what has Stiq Asmussen been up to or has he departed?”

I think the former director moved on to another studio. Maybe he’s working on a new Soul Reaver…? Who knows.

For me God of War 1 was the pinnacle of the main series because the story was presented very well and it complimented the gameplay perfectly. Subsequent games relied too heavily on Kratos’ anger and vengeance to the point where he seemed too one-dimensional. I personally felt a disconnect because that rage in Kratos didn’t seem justified anymore. I’m glad there’s a new director. The series was really begging for one.

  • @68 mastorofpuppetz – I don’t know if you were talking to me as #53 didn’t mention gods but i was saying the main gods has been killed. Sure there’s other gods but they wouldn’t really be a great character to use for an enemy. Like the god of crops(random made up example) highly unlikely he’d be a good fighter or villain.

Regardless i just don’t see any point in continuing after GoW3 as the whole point of kratos was exacting revenge against the gods: first ares and then the rest in gow2. They’re gone and the world cast in chaos but has hope.

I was really hoping for a new mythology

  • The Gods have smiled on thee this day, there can only be 1 Kratos!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

  • a great announcement for a bday present

  • i hope it just co op multi player,, like journey.. A prequal can go both way it can forwards and backwards.. The story of serving ares has been told.. I think this forward prequel leading up tto a ps4 debut of godwar, which is right thing to do.Either way i know it going to be kick a game

  • Fixed camera angles are a thing of the past yet this game is stuck there. Also, honestly, 5 games later and this game has yet to evolve at all.

The real question is have you beat all 5 games on GodMode or the highest mode? Try fighting clones on GodMode and come back to me!

Plus just to let you know that their are 6 God of War games out!

  • @ invalidid. The fixed cameras angle where so you could see the size and scope of the game. They were done like that on purpose so you can see the scenery around you and take it in while you fight. Tell me what you would have done instead if you know so well.

  • @Kchow23 i sent a post to todd on twitter and he informed me that stig is still with sony but he did not elaborate at all past that just to give u a heads up

  • umadbro? 6 games, details. Could care less about mobile market and I’m sure it was the same crap. Should just say its one game with 5 tedious dlc add ons. Don’t like my opinion, you don’t have to read it. Purely optional like this game which will not see my sixty bucks. Guess I’ll miss out on that beautiful scenery.

  • @2. God of War shouldn’t be on Vita. The main games should always be on Ps3. It wouldn’t be the same on Vita.

  • i gotta change my underwear

  • @43 could that not also mean his rise or Ascension to becoming one of the youngest Spartan captains? Just because it is coming after GOW 3 and yes Athena did say that she rose to a higher being but that does not solidify that ascensions meaning is directly parallel to the dialoge spoken in the game. I vote Prequel before the deal with Ares. How that will work story wise I have not the slightest idea but Santa Monica Studios have proven themselves over 3 games that they are a powerhouse in the industry and they know what they are doing.

  • @46

GAIA IS NO LONGER THE NARRATOR OF THE GAME DAMN IT!!!! SSM DITCHED THE IDEA SINCE GOW 3!!!!!
GAIA is played by another actress in GOW3, different from the actress who played her in GOW2, and also different from the narrator of the franchise.

Why is it that nobody knows this?!!! WTH?!!!!

  • I meant @43; sorry #46 :(

  • @140:

    It is a sequel.

The narrator is telling us “before he was known as the Ghost of Sparta”, which means that he has not killed her wife and daughter. But the adds posted before the announcement say “nothing will bring them back” and this obviously refers to his family; so how these 2 opposite ideas can be together in the same game??

Also in those adds it says “will vengeance bring redemption ?” The whole first trilogy was about vengeance, and he succeeded in GOW3 (killing most of the gods) so it is completed, and now he will search redemption for all the things he has done.

The game will take place after GOW3, and the player (and maybe Kratos too) will most probably realize that, by the end of the game (or earlier) when they show us the new bosses for the new trilogy.

In the game you will be re-experiencing past events in kratos life, and maybe that is because the bosses behind the curtain are playing with his mind…..torturing him by making him to believe that he can safe his family; when he CAN NOT that is why the “nothing will bring them back” quote.

  • Awesome. Hey how about not making the extra costumes disable trophies this time around.

  • Post 2:

He will notice some wierd things here and there during the game; that will make him realize something is wrong. Eventually he will wake up, and escape; and his search for redemption will begin by trying making an atonement for the things he has done in the past. Or maybe he is just in some kind of “limbo” after the events of the 3rd game, and he is remembering all the killing and all the “bad” deeds he has done in his life; waking up trying to redeem himself.

I think SSM is pulling a NaughtyDog here. One team helmed by Todd is making GOW: Ascension, while a second team helmed by Stig is making GOW4. And probably Ready at Dawn is re-making GOW: Betrayal for PSVITA :D

  • Damn, last 2 post were mean to @141, and not #140 lol sorry XD

  • I definitely agree with a few guys here. Its got to be a sequel with some way of you reliving the past events and throughout the game you maybe get flashes of memories of this other alternate reality(which would be uptill gow3).So Kratos would actually end up doing things differently like not sacrificing his family.

This would allow all of the very important characters that Kratos killed(who are definitely needed for a story) to return.Things could play out differently and the series can have sort of a reboot giving it life and a way for them to extend the series further.
Maybe now hes got to do everything he can to protect his family from the gods

  • @130 maybe you didnt read but if its a prequal there are many ways the story could go, heck even if not writers are a talented bunch who could easily find ways to move along the story of the series.

  • “Innovations”… I’ve been hearing this tired argument ever since God of War II was first shown off.

Gaming as a medium has matured beyond simple gameplay differentiation.

That’s why people who say DMC and God of War are clones are quickly shouted down. DMC is a Game and Dante is a Game Character. God of War treads that ambiguous line between Game and Movie. The developers provide a thoughtful, gripping story, giant, classical environments and interesting characters while you, the player, become something like an actor, doing as you like within the contexts provided.

Kratos, as a character, has been established. “Innovations” commenter-critics are thinking of simply don’t make sense. Innovations like the grappling system in GoW3 made sense. The harpy-jumping system made sense. The griffon-combat sections made sense. The reason they made sense is that they fit Kratos’ character and didn’t compromise the series’ essence.

You can throw in as many changes in as you like, but make no mistake, a true God of War game is an epic story first. If you’re looking for something else, you should be looking somewhere else.
