See PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale in Action

Omar Kendall's Avatar + Posted by Omar Kendall on Apr 26, 2012 // Game Director, SuperBot Entertainment

Today marks a special day for us here at SuperBot Entertainment, as we finally get to share our game with the world! PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale existed as an idea in the hearts of gamers way before SuperBot got around to making it, and the expectations of the fans are really what drive us. This game is a labor of love, and we’re excited to be able to finally show it — learn more in our new video interview above.

PlayStation All-Stars: Battle Royale

So what is PlayStation All Stars Battle Royale? First and foremost, it’s a celebration of a storied history of great characters and rich worlds brought together in one game. And for us, there’s no better way to celebrate than by creating an experience that players can sit around one screen and enjoy together. There are probably a few types of games that can be enjoyed by four players simultaneously, but for us at SuperBot, a brawler was the obvious choice for one really good reason: the developers here at SuperBot really like fighting games. We love playing them and we love making them. With PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale, we set out to make an experience accessible enough for all PlayStation fans to enjoy while also creating something deep enough for the serious fighting game aficionado. We think this “accessible yet deep” strategy is the perfect way to bring PlayStation fans of all stripes together.

PlayStation All-Stars: Battle RoyalePlayStation All-Stars: Battle Royale

The game features a number of cool game modes for both single and multiplayer, with a focus on online play which features a robust tournament mode. Players will be able to compete against each other as well as play cooperatively. We can’t wait for you all to try it for yourself.

Until then, please stay tuned; there are plenty more features, characters, and levels we want to show. And you definitely don’t want to miss what we’ve got in store for E3!

Now, if you could just throw in the Little Sister from Bioshock (obviously, include the Big Daddy) as a third party type thing, this would be the most awesome thing I had ever seen. Also, question: Does this game have anything to do with that “Michael” trailer?

I like Nightmare/Soul Calibur, but I don’t think that anyone from another fighting game should appear in this one. Only famous series with something unique to offer that have games on the PlayStation should appear in my opinion.

That said, Uncharted 3 could be mixed in with a Journey stage, having the beautiful desert as the base background, and the plane crashing down into it.

As for the countdown, I’m hoping that it reveals Leonard, just so I don’t have to keep on emphasizing that he needs to be in this game.

LOL! I’ve already left dozens of suggestions for playable characters. And just thought of another one. What about the “Journey” character? :)

Alright… here is my top ten list of what I am hoping for, from most wanted, to least:

1.) Spike and Specter from the Ape Escape series
2.) Serge, Lynx and Kid from Chrono Cross (Though I’d settle for Chrono Trigger characters)
3.) Cloud and Sephiroth from Final Fantasy VII
4.) Spyro the Dragon
5.) Chell from Portal (could be difficult to make a fighter, but she’d be awesome)
5.) Alucard from Castlevania: Symphony of the Night
6.) The alien from Alien Hominid
8.) Snake from Metal Gear (Yes, he’s in SSBB, but he’s a PlayStation character)
9.) Ezio (Assassin’s Creed)
10.) Crash Bandicoot

Cloud (FVII)
Sephiroth (FFVII)
Cole McGrath (inFAMOUS)
Nathan Drake (Uncharted)
Jak
Daxter
Journeyer (Journey)
Lara Croft (Tomb Raider)
Nariko (Heavenly Sword)

Maybe some others, but I can’t think of them right now.

Also, is the Super Attack the only way to KO people? I’d like it to be possible to be KO’d if you take enough punishment, and have the Super Attacks as the most effective way to do it. Also, hazards/being hit by other players needs to be something that you want to avoid.

My only gripe about this game so far is the deviation from super smash bros. when creating a game for fan-service such as this, options is the best thing to give to a gamer. But, limiting him/her to only killing Someone through specials or end-game attacks makes the other attacks essentially useless or in this case pointless. A players skill can and should be mapped by all attacks he or she are able to pull off that’s the bases or any fighting game especially Super Smash.

460

+ wudais on May 3rd, 2012 at 5:36 pm said:

Super Smash bros. already has moving levels, switching levels, scrolling levels, and closed off levels as well. They have modes where health is mainly involved, and others where stock lives, health percentage, time limits, infinite battle and even a 64 person tournament mode off/online are the criteria for battle. When you see this as a studio you need to understand people who don’t even own a WII play this game because, it’s fun and accessible to all ages. It’s not a a matter of difference everyone knows it’s different simply because of the Sony name attached, your goal shouldn’t be worrying about how independent you are from Nintendo.

461

+ wudais on May 3rd, 2012 at 5:37 pm said:

It should be building on the already successful ideas that don’t limit the player because, in a game like this you want as much mode/level variety as you do character development or your game is bound to fail. When you look at name recognition, play-ability and remembrance you want this to be the game fans play and say, “Wow this is so much fun I don’t even play Super Smash Bros. anymore or this is as fun as Super Smash Bros.” Borderlands 2 concept designer Scott Kester had great points to this affect- “Basically, we took anything that was there [in Borderlands] and improved it, cause if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.”

+ n0rmal94 on May 3rd, 2012 at 7:23 pm said:

They could add characters from games that are really popular to some that aren’t that known. They should add someone from Rogue Galaxy like Jaster. Also Ari and Stan from Okage Shadow King though alot of people don’t even know who they are.

463

+ Astroking112 on May 3rd, 2012 at 8:12 pm said:

I’m worried about being limited to KO’ing with special attacks as well… it’ll turn out wrong if that is the ONLY way, but if it was an efficient way (With others), then I’d be fine. Maybe add in a Health Gauge as well? Or something that will make normal attacks more than just a way to perform Super Attacks, since Normal Attacks are what will truly make the characters play and feel unique.

I’m really excited about this game, it’s something I’ve been wanting for years. If it were to ever be made I feared that Sony wouldn’t put enough effort in and it would flop, but seeing the game it looks exactly how I wanted it to turn out.

One thing I’m worried about, in terms of characters, is the third party stuff. Obviously some third party characters should be in it, like Ratchet & Clank, Solid Snake, Cloud etc., but I’m really hoping that Ezio and Isaac Clarke and that kind aren’t in it. While these characters are awesome and may work great for gameplay, it really needs to focus on characters associated with PlayStation. There are certainly enough of them and this game needs to keep its identity.
I’m pretty sure SuperBot already knows this though, they appear to know what they are doing.

Hey Omar! I made a roster pic

http://i1078.photobucket.com/albums/w490/JStein0222/All_Stars_Roster.jpg

Just showcasing a combination of who I want and who I think is likely (Pipo Monkey and Sora would be amazing) As far as game modes go I completely trust your team and in all of your interviews you’ve been awesome so thanks for that. But, if you guys could showcase a 1 vs 1 match that would be awesome, all of us guys on the forums are really wanting to see that.
The last thing I wanted to ask about was a Vita version, now I know you can’t admit anything to me here in the comments but just give me a “subtle nod” if you know what I mean haha. If you guys did the whole MLB The Show thing and had a PS3 + Vita game bundle ($80) It would be my most wanted thing of the year!

Thanks Omar!

Ratchet & Clank are PS-Exclusive… Not sure why Ezio shouldn’t be in this, since gameplay will be the very thing that defines this game for a lot of people. Not sure who Isaac Clarke is…

As for multiple characters in each franchise, I’m ok with it to an extent. Only if the characters are truly unique should multiples of their franchise be included, for example, Ratchet & Clank would both be unique enough to be in, while Nathan Drake & Sully wouldn’t. Lara Croft alone might be too similar to Drake, and if one of them were to be chosen, it needs to be Drake.

As for Nariko, I think that if she gets in, she’d need to have one of her stances assigned to each button (Speed, Range, and Power), with the D-Pad dictating attacks from there.

Mr. Kendell I have so many questions about this game!
(Post 1/2)
Question 1: Which types of attacks do each separate attack button do? (ie. special attacks, quick/weak attacks, slow/strong attacks)

Question 2: I made movesets for characters that I wanted in the game that were sent to you guys from Paul Gale Network, but since I didn’t know what the controls would be like, I didn’t add any circle attacks or any grabs, so if you guys were to like it and want to use it in the game, would you guys just take my movesets and just add circle and grab moves to it?

Question 3: I also made a level for the game but didn’t know you guys were going to mash up each of the levels with 2 Playstation IPs, so if you were to like my levels, would you guys just take it and mash it up with another Playstation IP?

474

+ mtjjrstccw1 on May 5th, 2012 at 5:18 pm said:

(Post 2/2)
Question 4: now you might not be able to answer this right now but will the story mode have cinematic cutscenes like in Super Smash Bros Brawl or any type of cutscenes in general?

Question 5: Don’t get me wrong, I love how the game looks and I love the “only supers KO” concept and I trust you guys, but can you keep the fighting centered on the “supers KO” concept but have at least 1 mode where you score by knocking characters of the edge or by depleting their life bar?

Great work with the game, you guys rock! Can’t wait!

Never mind, I want to see Solidus as a character. I mean Snake is my favorite character from MGS but looking at it from the developers standpoint, Solidus would be easier to transfer over since he’s already a melee heavy character. Snake they would have to find some moves that makes him different from SSBB.

If it’s true that the only way you can K.O an enemy is if you use a special attack, then that needs to be taken out. You should be able to get opponents health or damage percentage to a certain lvl and then knock them out with normal or super moves (Where as super moves deal way more damage than normal: ie Sweet tooth’s robot mode is a super move) Also you should be able to choose between time, health bar, and stocks (w/ damage %)
A mission mode, challenge mode, training mode, arcade, and story mode should be considered as well to give the game more depth rather than it just being a soulless mash-up and have lots of unlockables from stickers to audio to character bio’s and information, the whole nine. DON’T JUST SLAP IN STUFF LAST MINUTE. In order for a gam like this to become sucessful it has to have a lot of content other than the fighting. Like 100+ hours of unlockables would be nice.
Now the must have characters are:
Crash Bandicoot
Spyro
Dan Fortesque
Jak & Daxter (single character)
Ratchet & Clank
Toro
Cole McGrath
Wander/ Ico or Both from Shadow of the Colossus and Ico
Journeyer
Spike Spiegel ( Come on! Ape Escape was the first dualshock game on PSX)

485

+ RodBow15 on May 7th, 2012 at 2:06 am said:

Must have 3rd Party Characters are:
Nariko ( Heavenly Sword)
Jasper ( Rogue Galaxy)
Solid Snake or Raiden (MGS)
Sora ( Kingdom Hearts)
Cloud/Tidus/Zindane/Squall (Final Fantasy Series)
Aya Brea (Parasite Eve Series/ The 3rd Birthday)
Claire Redfield (She needs moar spotlight! Resident Evil 2/ Code Veronica X)
and the list goes on…
There should be AT LEAST 25-30 characters at the minimum. There are so many cool characters to choose from to only limit us to like 10 characters and then make us buy DLC for the rest. Slso the combat system needs to be fast and fluid not clunky and slow.

486

+ RodBow15 on May 7th, 2012 at 2:19 am said:

Hate to triple post but LordBater on Page 9 made some EXCELLENT POINTS. If you guys insist on having super only K.O’s then let each attack received drain you Super Meter a bit rather than having no consequences at all for taking hits. Another good point he brought up was getting Square Enix as a 3rd party. Square has a HUGE amount of PLaystation exclusives and an even bigger fanbase. From Final Fantasy to Kingdom Hearts. Adding Cloud, Sephiroth, Tidus, or Sora will get you guys sale’s for these characters alone. Seriously something to consider, guys.

Thank you RodBow15!! It really brings a smile to my face to know that my comments made an impact on someone^^!

You had a few good points yourself there; adding in collectables that aren’t just thrown in at the last second would really establish SuperBot as an accomplished developer team. I too wish for a gratuitous amount of game modes however I do realize that there is only so much one team can do, especially if they’re shooting for a holiday release. My big hope is to see a solid story mode (cut scene or RPG sprites) with full voice acting! I would be very impressed if SuperBot could put in an immersive single player experience on top of a fun battle system.

And even if The game comes out with some content missing, keep in mind that there is still room for patches and additional content through DLC. Seeing how this is their first game and most likely their first attempt at a “party brawler” I’d imagine that they’d come up with new things to add to the game even after its initial release. Extra challenges, game modes, characters, stages, you name it! This IP is brimming with potential and I would love nothing more than to see it go above and beyond the media’s expectations!

Sir Daniel fortesque from Medievil
A Sackboy from Little big planet
Snake, Raiden and at least one of the Fox hound members from MGS
Some Disgaea characters whould be cool 2.
One of the Mini ninjas caharacters whould be cool

As for stages:
A stage in Rupture farms (Oddworld) Being attacked by Heaven city troops (Jak 2)

A stage on either the Final colossus (Shadows of the colossus) or one of the titans (God of war) while the 2 duke it out

A stage in the stage select hub from Crash 3 while various Playstation characters come out and are either a hazard or otherwise apart of the background

A stage in the Loco roco world (Does that even have a name) while it’s being destroyed by Lemmings

A mixture between God of wars Hades and Disgaea’s Hades

Oh geez almost forgot some tips about making the game.

I whould appresiate alot of unlockables and game modes.

Customization whould also be awsome (Equip different wepons for characters who had alot of weapons from their games, multible costumes from their games like the Sackboys various costume choises or Young snake/Old snake)

Little big planet’s level editor for custom levels.

Some cool little things (Like cooking with Scorpion in Mortal kombat Deadly alliance) as a direct request for unlockables that can bring a smile on my face as a long time fan of the Playstation consoles.

NO DAY 1 DLC (that is SO irritating). but still DLC eventually without taking from the game to make DLC.

I know you’re just one development team but I hope you can pull of at least half of this stuff.
