God of War: Ascension – Multiplayer Announcement Live From Santa Monica Studio

Like God of War

Hello PlayStation fans! As I mentioned on the 19th, at 8 AM PDT (11 AM EDT) today we’ll be streaming live from Santa Monica Studios, where our team is busy building the next evolution in the franchise. I will be talking with Mr. PlayStation Blog himself, Jeff Rubenstein, about God of War: Ascension and my past experience with the franchise. And of course I will be answering some of the questions from fans on Twitter. As promised, if we read your question live on air, we’ll be reaching out to you (via @PlayStation) so we can send you a signed God of War: Ascension poster.

But wait, there’s more! During our live broadcast, I’ll be sharing the scoop with Jeff, and of course all of you, about our brutal new multiplayer mode. Yes, that’s right. God of War: Ascension will feature a ground-breaking new online multiplayer mode. We wouldn’t do multiplayer in God of War unless we knew we could do it right. That’s why I’m extremely excited to finally be able to talk publicly about it and share all the gory details with you live. I even have some exclusive gameplay footage to share with you, so be sure to tune in to see it all live.

And if you missed our announcement on the 19th, be sure to check out the announce trailer and initial game details here before the show starts. Stay tuned because we go live at 8 AM Pacific!

Let us know what you’re looking forward to most in God of War: Ascension, and what you think of the new multiplayer mode!

Mr. Jeff Rubenstein (or should I say Mr. Sony) as always you did a great job with this interview! Let’s hope we get a one on one with the lead director of SuperBot Entertainment Omar Kendall soon, or maybe at E3!

Yay, more MP for the sake of MP.

Least now I know not to waste on this.

We have more then enough MP games. Try making some games for the single players out there.

yup another great franchise ruined by MP

the only way i’ll even consider this is if they got some sort of co-op but even then the game revolves around such a solo aspect .. so i doubt anything good will come of this

what else will be ruined by the so-called evolution of online gaming

games like god of war, uncharted, dead space, assassin’s creed, bioshock and resident evil should have been left solo

@101, you simple or something? There is still an epic SP campaign, and how do you know its MP for the sake of it? Maybe just maybe its a way to innovate a stale genre? Did you play it ignorant whop?

@103, how did MP ruin Uncharted? Oh wait, it never……………………. Since when does MP ruin SP? This is SSM, since when did they release a bad SP campaign geta clue chicken littles.

Again, not one chicken little has been able to explain how MP ruins SP like it did in Uncharted, Assassins creed, Dead Space… and on and on.

It is easy to see which people here have no good MP friends and as a result have never had a fun MP session before. And that’s why they hate MP. Most of the games being listed here that have supposedly been ruined by MP are a blast when you play them with a good friend or group of friends. I’ve had some great memories playing SP only games the last 24 years but even better memories during my MP sessions! Maybe these people are bitter because they only play online with random strangers and then write the MP mode as being garbage? Usually, if the SP stinks, it was always going to stink, regardless of MP. Get over it and get some better MP friends.

When I first heard there was going to be multiplayer I was not very happy. I thought that it could very easily ruin the game for me. Now that I’ve seen this, I like this quite a bit. I have one big question now. Once you choose your class/God, is it at all possible to switch to another one or are you stuck with that one?

@love or die

‘haha The Last of Us on vita. You have a PS3? right? then I think the better experience would be would ND put into that version. They don’t even make PS Vita games. GOW on the Vita is inevitable but you shouldn’t be asking for much.

GOW Ascension, yeah Multiplayer was inevitable. It’s always going to be inevitable, I trust these SSM highly but nope. no pre-order until I see some serious gameplay / reviews. GOW was great. But this, I don’t know. I love myself CO-OP to the space beyond time. Competitive.. eh not so much seeing as 5 months after launch , you’re left with all the hardcore devoted fans who get 10-kill streaks WHILE YAWNING (cough cough Uncharted 3). If there is some serious CO-OP I will buy this. You see Mass Effect 3? I played the demo and the MP was a lot of fun since I love CO-OP and wave survival to death. I might pick up the game later on when it’s cheap just for the MP actually. Enough, just your thoughts, but leave your real opinions when you see almost final gameplay of it near release. You can also leave your opinions when Sony markets this game to death (leaving you with a dissatisfaction for the singleplayer (cough cough UNCHARTED 3).

@92

The point is to increase the longevity of the game.

The point is to PLAY GoW with friends and not just talk about our single player adventures.

The point is to add more gameplay elements/modes into the GoW series, keeping it new.

The point is making something fun to play with others within the world of GoW.

None of the above is needed to make GOW fresh or fun. This is just another game with MP shoved in to sell extra DLC.

I’m sorry you feel forced to play the multiplayer portion of a game and buy DLC for it; so sad.

There will still be a single player game for people like you who want more of the same.

No no no no no no! Please Don’t do it! Do NOT ruin an amazing game with needless multiplayer “hey lets get together and play online” crap! I have been an avid God of War player and fan ever since the first game came out. I’ve played them all on all systems that they’ve been available for. Please do not ruin this franchise. God of War has ALWAYS been you vs. everyone. Don’t screw it up. Of course, even though countless people have left similar comments I’m sure you’re not going to listen and you’re going to screw it up anyway for all the morons out there that can’t play a game unless they can get online with all of their “friends”. So please, if you MUST screw it up by adding multiplayer, please do not include online multiplayer trophies that would force players like myself to play in that ridiculous mode in order to attain all of the trophies.

131

+ AizawaYuuichi on May 1st, 2012 at 1:05 am said:

Whelp, you lost my pre-order. I won’t even consider this game until I see a trophy list confirming there is NOTHING associated with the MP crap.
Seriously, some people like to play games for the STORY, not to kill other people in a repetitive online experience. Yes, MP ruined Uncharted 3. ND explicitly said they’d been working on the MP for UC3 as soon as they finished UC2, and you can tell by how unpolished the SP campaign was. Constant video/audio desync, audio glitches, textures popping in, all stuff that was barely seen at all in the first two games.
And AC… Brotherhood and Revelations were both significantly shorter than AC2, partly due to the compressed release schedules and partly because of their constant work on the MP.
In Mass Effect 3, there’s no way to get the “best” ending without playing the MP, unless you made all the “correct” choices and have a save game carried over from the first game (impossible for all PS3 players).
Multiplayer should be left to shooters, when they originated on PC, not shoehorned into every other genre of gaming. By putting MP in every F****ING game, EVER, you only continue to dilute the overall online community in a continually increasing sea of online games.

@129, your full of it, Mp was first introduced in uncharted 2 and it is easily the best of the series, killing any silly argumetn you had. not to mention 3 is the second best in the series and it also had MP. UC2 and 3 sold much better then 1 and they both have MP. Kills your argument.

Red Dead, GTA, Assassins Creed, Dead Space, Uncharted, Metal Gear, Little big planet, etc…… all have MP and SP never suffers, get a clue.

@128 why is MP needless when the SP is still there and many want it? How do you know did you play it?

Anyone saying they are cancelling their pre-order because of MP are being whiney babies. Their is still going to be epic SP experience GOW is known for. It makes sense to have some MP mode as the series was getting stale from a SP standpoint.

How will adding MP screw anything up? Most of you have the maturity of a toddler, kicking and screaming when not everything is tailored made for you. Grow up.

…an this is why the PSC is the best their is, no matter what your gaming background we all have a voice. Now to the matter at hand:

First, after reading all comments let’s all remember to be respectful of each others views and thoughts. Even if those views differ greatly from your own.

Second, I personally whole heartedly disagree with adding a multiplayer to this franchise! However I do understand the reasoning behind it. Remember this is an industry predicated on following the latest trends and trying to cater to the masses for the greatest part of the market. As a very devoted GOW fan I’m buying this game w/o a doubt! I’m hoping like others that their are no trophies assoc with MP, but let’s face it you know their will be. I mean that’s part of the allure to MP, not just owning some poor sap you are playing :-P

Third, I also hope they have a limited edition, the GOW3 Ultimate edition was a great collectors piece (fans in the UK are sooo lucky! Yours was awesome, wish I could’ve gotten one) but who knows it’s still about a year away from releasing.

Bottom line it’s God Of freaking War peeps, no matter what it’s going to be completely EPIC :-O

@mastorofpuppetz

“Red Dead, GTA, Assassins Creed, Dead Space, Uncharted, Metal Gear, Little big planet, etc…… all have MP and SP never suffers, get a clue”I won’t condemn GOW: A just yet, but if you really look at your examples you’ll find out of those games only Uncharted and MGS are really story-driven games. All games made by Rockstar and Assassin’s Creed have lackluster stories (I see your avatar, and I’m sorry but this is not open for debate, open world games leave good storytelling aside). Now LBP is not “MP” , the whole game is built so up to 4 players can enjoy any stage.

Now, Dead Space 2 was a worse game than the first one and that’s a fact. The second game did very little to build on the first one, it was basically copy-paste and a shooter mostly with a lame story to boot. Mass Effect 3 did suffer because the time spent on the MP part, just ask all the people disappointed with the ending and mad at other stuff that didn’t get proper conclusion, should we look at its MP as the main culprit for these games, maybe not the main one, maybe, but it’s no coincidence those sequels were treated worse than the prior games when they got MP.

139

+ MarinoBrea on May 1st, 2012 at 10:18 am said:

True, Uncharted hasn’t really suffered (as much) though I would argue part 3 was not as good as 2 and the story felt pretty much disjointed and uninspired, and the major efforts were definitely made to revamp the MP part, and there’s no denying this. Now if we keep looking for examples I’m sure we’ll find some more story-driven games that got worse sequels when they got MP. Most of them went bad. Resistance 2 focused mainly on MP and the SP suffered because of it because they aimed to “callofdutizied” the franchise. Big fail, and Resistance 2 is regarded as the worst of the series by its fans, so much that part 3 was a step back in MP offerings to concentrate more on the SP and the story, co-op and what made Resistance 1 great: the campaign. Sadly, it was too late, the damage had be done, and Resistance already had the stigma of a bad and uninspired COD wannabe so very few people were interested in the third.

140

+ MarinoBrea on May 1st, 2012 at 10:20 am said:

Twisted Metal focused on MP and failed miserably trying to resurrect the franchise. Not a bad game by any means, but people where expecting something bigger for the campaign and they didn’t care about what made the franchise what it was: the characters and their stories. Another big fail thanks to MP. Not to mention the MP never worked properly another big risk you get for depending on online structures.

Bioshock 2 was worse than the first one. The second one has MP. More coincidence? I doubt it. Bioshock Infinite, I think, won’t have MP. Hmmm.

141

+ MarinoBrea on May 1st, 2012 at 10:21 am said:

I’m not saying all MP make story-driven games bad, but I have clearly shown you it does more harm than good most of the time. It’s a big risk, and I don’t doubt Santa Monica has the best intentions for it, it actually looks pretty awesome (emphasis on “Looks”), but at the same time I know I can’t expect a Story mode that will be on the same level with any of the main GOW titles, more like a filler, a side-dish if you will, almost a spin-off. And everybody who looks forward and buys a GOW game expects more than that, so you’re looking to disappoint a lot people who may or not give a harpie’s a$s about MP. I may remain skeptical and my expectations probably won’t change unless Santa Monica confirms they had a whole separate team working on the MP while their usual workforce was tasked with delivering a story mode as epic as the last one.

@mastorofpuppetz: You know, it’s a good idea to do @*name* rather than comment number, since as you can see if you look again, my comment is now #131.
And no, your opinions of Uncharted 3 do not “kill my arguments”, as they are a mixture of my opinion of the game and actual facts about the quality of the SP campaign. IT WAS HORRIBLY GLITCHY COMPARED TO THE FIRST TWO. There is no denying that. Can it be completely attributed to the amount of time spent on the MP? No. But it can be considered, and that means there’s a problem. I didn’t bring up UC2 because the MP for that was clearly tacked on, and the SP story did not suffer. The same cannot be said for UC3. And sales != quality. Of course the sequels sold more. They had MP. That doesn’t mean the SP campaign came out unscathed.
If anyone needs to get a clue, it’s you. I was just responding to your claims. You’re the one trash-talking everyone who’s opinion doesn’t match your own. You’re the one being childish. We’re just voicing our extreme dissatisfaction with this decision. That is our right, and you have no right to tell us otherwise.
