Hi there, I’m Rhod from Dakko Dakko and I’d like to introduce you to our second game, Floating Cloud God Saves The Pilgrims.


If you’ve played our previous game, The 2D Adventures of Rotating Octopus Character, then you might already have guessed that we have a thing for literal game titles here! This time (as the title suggests) your job as Cloud God is to keep your troupe of devoted followers safe on their long journey. It’s no easy feat, as there are hordes of peculiar demons waiting across the game’s seven worlds, all trying to pick off a pilgrim or two.

It’s a game about protection. And shooting. Lots of shooting. The more enemies you shoot without getting hit, the more the pilgrims will love you. Pilgrim love helps you get faster and more powerful, but getting hit will lose you all that love, and you’ll need to work on your shoot-and-dodge skills to get back the hearts you lost. This cycle is the basis of the gameplay.

Just as with Rotating Octopus Character, the inspiration for this game came largely from time I spent living in Japan. Before starting Dakko Dakko, I worked at Q-Games in Kyoto making PixelJunk games for PlayStation. On weekends I would go on cycling trips to temples and shrines, soaking up the unique atmosphere of each one. Along the way I had the idea for a game about helpless-yet-determined pilgrims, in need of protection as they journey from shrine to shrine.

The idea for Floating Cloud God himself actually came from a number of sources – he has the angry, powerful expression of the guardian gods who protect temple gates, but he sits on a cloud like the nimble flying deities from one of Japan’s most famous temples, Byodo-in, which is south of Kyoto in ‘Uji’.

Gary, the art lead on the project, quickly took the vision for a light-hearted, jovial-yet-powerful god and came up with the cloud-haired, angry character you see in the game. The enemies that trouble the pilgrims on their journey were greatly inspired by many of the crazy creatures from Japanese folklore. Everything from the one-legged umbrella, to the bouncing ball of rolling soil, were inspired by stories and statues seen around Japan. Our team thought that Gary’s sketches for the Pilgrim characters were so beautiful that we adapted some of them for use in the game. My favourite is here, with one lonely pilgrim looking on the hill.

Of course, if you play well you’ll never need to see just one lonely pilgrim in the game! You’ll be able to make sure that they all get safely to their goal, when Floating Cloud God Saves The Pilgrims’ goes on sale on May 1st. The game is free for lucky PlayStation Plus subscribers, or you can pay $2.99 if you’re not a subscriber.

I really wish the mini’s would die off . At least for the ps3 . Sure they’d be fine for say the Vita or Psp but come on . This is the Ps3 we are talking about and it’s power is being wasted on crap like this . There’s a ton of mini’s just like this already .

@12 I’m sure there are plenty of people who enjoy minis and more specifically, games of this nature. It has been said countless times before, but I will say it again. If you do not enjoy games like this or minis for that matter, do not download them or play them. By no means are the release of these games hurting your precious AAA titles. You are entitled to your own opinion of course, however this does not always mean you are correct.

Thanks for the support, guys! If you do give the game a try, let us know which of the special hats is your favorite… you’ll get a special hat for clearing a stage with a full set of eight living pilgrims, and some of them are pretty neat!

This game looks like ti would play great moving w/ the left stick and shooting/aiming w/ the right stick. Alas my experience w/ minis is no stick support, so I ask – how does one control the game?

You can use the left stick or the pad to move on every system. When you are shooting, Floating Cloud God moves much slower than normal and you use the same stick to then control the direction of shots. This means you need to dodge and dive around the stage whilst not shooting, lining up the best position to start firing from. And then when you’re holding down shoot, you can smoothly move your shot stream around, taking out demon after demon…

I gotta admit. I wasn’t a big mini guy until recently. Now that I realize that I can transfer them from PS3 to PSP I find myself playing my PSP every night before I go to bed. I’m surprised by how much fun some of these games are. I’m actually really excited for this game. Looks super cool. Plus, members of ex pixeljunk employees are working on this? Sign me up!!! This game looks fun. Can’t wait for today’s update :D

Thanks Rhodri. Actually sounds like the Asura’s Wrath control scheme for the shooting levels, which I hated trying to control. Should be a lot easier on a 2D plane though I would hope. And it does make sense considering the constraints. Maybe now that the Vita has 2 sticks Sony will start letting the minis have dual stick controls. Maybe you can patch it in later ;-)

I don’t know how this is “clearly a kids game.” Just because it looks whimsical and fun? I think this game looks adorable and I’ll definitely be downloading it. These types of games are a nice break from all the serious AAA titles.

P.S. If you read this, what is a “sarrow” anyway?

I love the art style and music! It makes me wish I had a PSP to play it on. I’ll probably still download it anyway, especially given that it’s coming from somebody that used to work on the PixelJunk games. =)

A kids game? The first level maybe, but after that there is a serious ramp up in difficulty. I think levels 3, 4 and 5 were easier than 2. I can’t get past 5 though.

On a related note, Velocity was easier, and that’s a puzzle solving SMHUP. I did skip levels 4 and 10 though, for which I applaud the developers for letting me do. I thought I was done at level 3. Who knew developers could be so generous as to give us our money’s worth?
