PS3 System Software Update (v4.20)

Tomorrow we will be releasing a new system software update (v4.20) for PlayStation 3 which will include a few minor updates in order to strengthen functionality and improve your overall experience.

As mentioned in our previous blog post, system software update (v4.10) added a feature that enabled you to hear your own voice through the Wireless Stereo Headset when playing multiplayer modes. This type of audio feedback is known as “sidetone.” Based on your comments, system software update (v4.20) will improve sidetone audio performance by giving you the option to select one out of five levels for microphone audio, or turn the feature off completely. For those of you who use the Wireless Stereo Headset to watch Blu-ray or DVD movies on your PS3, this system software update will also enable virtual surround sound functionality, giving you a superior audio experience.

This update will also allow you to set the amount of time that the system will wait before turning itself off automatically for [Video/TV/Music/Photo] and for [Game/Other Features].

Additionally, saved data management has been improved. You will now be able to select multiple saved data items and delete or copy them as a group.

More details will be available here tomorrow once the system software update is live.

  • No vita trophy lists? :’C

  • Thanks for the update! I guess the PS3 is no longer going to get BIG updates like from the earlier updates such as in game XMB etc.? Shame, it was fun getting those BIG updates. :(

  • thought something important was coming.. who am i kidding?

  • Nice :D

  • Virtual Surround for Blu-Rays and DVDs is nice but makes me wonder why that wasn’t there in the first place.

  • I just want FULL PS2 playback on a PS3 really :(

  • cool update.
we need a HBOgo app though.

  • Finally!!! I’m so glad to be able to turn off Sidetone at last! Thank you so much for this update, I’ll definitely be downloading it tomorrow. :D

  • Like the added Saved Data stuff. Shifting from cloud and back again is a pain. Now if we could get some more organizational options for games, maybe get a panel for favorites on the hard drive that we can either pin or have some sort of user analytics going on that would be great.

Also I’d like to see my vita trophies on the XMB…. never mind having an XMB mode on the Vita, but that is a story for another day.

  • I’m thankful for the ability the use virtual surround with DVDs and Blu-Rays now. That really upset me I couldn’t before :)

  • @+ Carl-G

You and all of us, brother.

  • Cool Update but, what bout more BIG Updates. The XMB Iz getting boring… Just a suggestion.

  • watch some IDIOTTTT come on here screaming for Cross-Play….

  • +1 for viewable Vita trophies on PS3.

I know Shuhei Yoshida recently said it would be difficult to do so due to the PS3’s system software architecture. But, dammit, if your software engineers really deserve to be called engineers, then they’ll find a way. The community wants this feature.

  • We haven’t seen nothing important since trophies n in game xmb

  • or cross chat.. what ever the hellll iots called.

  • While this is a nice update for those who have the headset, I’m still hoping for some sort of Vita/PS3 interaction. People can see you online on PS3 but not what you’re playing. If they were last on their vita they get pushed to the bottom of the friends list with no indication of when they were last online. And obviously you can see total amounts of trophies but not the Vita trophies themselves. Will we ever see some sort of Vita compatibility or are you holding out until PS4?

  • @Carl-G @Ouren
+1 here. It’d be great to hear the gorgeous soundtrack of Persona 3 FES through the wireless headset.

  • When are we getting the ability to install games fully to the hard drive? When are trophies going to sync automatically? When are we going to be able to queue downloads from a web browser. The system is 5 years old and you guys are a multi-national conglomerate. I’m sure you can hire a programmer/engineer to give us these features.

  • Whers kross gaem chat! 60 haz it y kant we! GIV US KROSS GAEM CHAT NOWWW!!!! Imma go sell my plaestashun now u disapointeded me sony! We ben a loial custumer 4 years and dis is da thnx we git!

  • Very good update IMO.

  • These new features will not affect my overall experience. Try again.

  • “You will now be able to select multiple saved data items and delete or copy them as a group.”

Thank you!!!! I don’t know if this already happens, but when you see your saves on a USB stick, is it possible to also group them by game/title? That would be convenient, just select a group and restore your saves.

  • Id like a new interface, xmb is boring and old now

  • Let the moaning and complaining about Cross Game Chat begin!

Let it go people, it’s not possible on PS3; it’s not going to happen on PS3.

  • Where’s the push for Vita integration?

  • Any chance we’ll be able to group the “install” bubbles together? It’s already annoying enough that we have to leave them there for PSone, PSP, and Mini games in case we ever decide to copy them to our PSP and Vita as well. I have to scroll down quite a bit to go from trophies to my games.

  • Great stuff. I’d definitely benefit from the additional functionality w/ the game saves & power-off delays. :) Thank you!

  • it would be nice if every now and then you surprise us with a out of this world update like vidzone app,Google play app update the PSN store to look more like qriocity app updated YouTube app, chrome or opera browser crackle app sometimes i dont even know why you even tell us

  • @D-Squad3 – yup, what you see is basically what you get as far as the PS3’s functionality/ XMB layout etc. At this stage of the console’s lifespan the system updates are going to be pretty minor from here on out.

As far as Cross-Game chat goes – Let it die people. Yes it would be cool and I’ve asked for it too, but Sony reps have come out and admitted that due to the system’s memory architecture, it is basically impossible. It is on the Vita so I’m confident it’ll also be on the eventual PS4.

It would be great however to be able to view our Vita trophies on the PS3 though, but they may be waiting for full Vita integration with the PS4.

  • Just because a system update doesn’t affect you specifically, doesn’t mean it’s not a meaningful update. Not every update will be related to something you, personally, are interested in.

  • Add a search tool in our dowloads list.

  • I just posted about this at my website, thanks for the heads up. I’ll be looking forward to tomorrow for more info.

  • So I am guessing issues like the following are still not solved.

    1. Comparison of Trophies with friends is too slow
    2. Every time you click on profile it says comparing the sync operation please wait. Why would I get this message if no new trophy’s have been collected ????
    3. In game XMB is very slow and should be worked on to speed things along.
    4. Fixing the internet browser so it actually works like a computers browser.
    5. An option to prefer or avoid players while playing online.

  • @ #14 ( PainOfSarrow ):
Cross game chatting is not coming to the PS3 because of hardware limitations. I do hear that cross game chatting is on the Vita.

  • Select multiple save games at once :) now your talking, nice update Oh and Virtual SS for movies, also very nice. Thank you

  • Can the PS3’s Internet Browser be updated a bit? Disqus, the comment system installed on my website, is now using a dynamic iframe as an embed, because Disqus 2012 uses an iframe. I get the initial Disqus comment stub (Disqus logo and a loading animation), then the initial iframe loads. I need all of the iframes to load.

Someone, please check this out on my website to see what I mean.

  • I just bought a new PS3, i think i sold the last one after 3.10. I was disappointed after i updated the new one. Thats all? Xbox gets new dashboards every year. It has a complete app store. On PS3 i only find CoD Elite. Facebook, twitter, skype would be awesome.

    And yes, browser is useless.

  • If you have a wireless headset, this is a “big” update. It will be nice to be able to actually use it for chat like I thought I was going to get to when I bought it.

Multiple saves at once is a nice add also, albeit a small and long overdue one.

  • Update 420 yeah

  • will there be more to this update besides what you listed up top?If not it’s lame

  • “Great news, everyone” should’ve been the title of this post.
I’ve been waiting for group deleted/copy of save data for quite some time! After having a YLOD long ago, it made me really wish for the group copy when I was trying to export all my save data.

  • Sounds like a great update for people with that headset. Of course I would also like to see my Vita trophies on the PS3 and a search function for the download list. For me those are the two big ones that I assume are plausible. I’d also like to see Sony encourage more PSN developers to make their new and old games remote-playable on the Vita, and give them incentive to do so.

I’ll give up on widespread functional remote-play with the Vita until the PS4. If the PS4 isn’t powerful enough to process all games and send it seamlessly to the Vita via remote-play, I’ll be very disappointed. That’s not to say that all games would play well on the Vita b/c of the different control scheme, but it darned sure better be able to do it.

  • Where is that youtube app for the vita???

  • Thanks for the heads up Eric.

  • can we get party chat, and a way to appear offline?

  • Finally, a fix for the Wireless Stereo Headset… :)
and thanx for enabling virtual surround sound for DVD’s and Blu-ray on it… :)

  • @41 – jhernandez360.

They stated end of June for Youtube for Vita…we’ve still got the rest of the week before the end of this month.

  • NICE! I always like system updates, and I gotta say this one has been one of the best in a long time. Because I love it when you improve and add new settings to the system, I have to admit I like those the most. (Unless it’s something like adding PS1 and 2 Classic support on the Vita). I’ll be looking forward to this, especially the improvements to auto system shut down. Especially since it’s summer and I’ll be scared to leave a PS3 idle for too long in 95+ degree weather.

  • Voice messaging, PSN ID change, redesigned in-game xmb????! And SONY wonders why PS3 is not doing as well in the US compared to the 360. Improve the PSN experience, give use some useful features!
