The US PlayStation.Blog team is taking a break for Independence Day, that uniquely American holiday fueled by smoked meats, cold adult beverages and deafening explosions. But we didn’t want to leave you empty handed, so we’re publishing this week’s PlayStation Blogcast a full 24 hours early. Listen and enjoy!

In today’s show, we put the spotlight on the new Tomb Raider, a survival-based re-imagining of the classic series that’s heading to PS3 in March 2013. Karl Stewart, Global Brand Manager for Tomb Raider developer Crystal Dynamics, sheds new light on the creative process driving the game’s ambitious goals, from re-introducing the iconic character of Lara Croft to integrating RPG-style character progression and redefining the series’ trademark action, platforming, and puzzles. This is a great discussion about the video game creative process, and worth a listen even if Tomb Raider isn’t on your radar.

Of course, we also share first details on next week’s PSN lineup, answer several user questions, and serve up another head-scratching Mystery Theme. Click the Play button already!

Update: In this podcast, we incorrectly reported that Mickey Mania would be coming to PlayStation Store. There are no plans to release the game on the North American PlayStation Store as the game only supports PAL video output, which is incompatible with North American television sets.

and happy 4th of july Sid!

      USA! USA! USA!

    • Your spoiling me with this being a day early Sid!

    • This podcast has quickly become a regular habit, sort of like Penny Arcade. Good personalities and useful information from y’all.

Have a fun 4th of July.

    • Thanks Sid! Congratulations on your promotion, whatever it was ;)

    • Thanks for the podcast a little early! Have a great 4th of July day guys!

    • Please tell me Uncharted 3’s patch 1.13 will be out for the 4th of July weekend :)

      *God Bless America=

    • So looking forward to Rainbow Moon next week. great show guys, as always. Glad we’ll see more Seth action on the podcast too, always enjoy his visits, persoality, and enthusiasm.

    • I know this is a long shot but will you guys be releasing any more ps1 imports on the psn store. It was one of my favorite things you were doing but when the store went down it just sort of died off. Even a we dont have any plans would do.

    • I have mixed feelings about the Tomb Raider reboot. On the one hand, the upgrade system sounds pretty cool and from what we saw at e3, the game play looks Unchartalicious. On the other hand, I’m worried about the story and character development. Karl Stewart constantly uses other properties as inspiration for the game’s plot. Nolan Batman & Craig 007 chief among them. Although that’s excellent company to keep, I’m worried that this story will copy the super dramatic, super dark tone to the point of restricting Lara’s character growth.

At the end of the game, I don’t expect to see the old Lara Croft, but I’d like to see a female more sure of herself, perhaps even a quirky comment in the face of hardship to help lift the mood. You know, a little sugar to help us take the dark medicine.

I guess what I’m trying to say is that I hope they don’t try to make Lara a female Christopher Nolan Bruce Wayne. She’s her own character, let her evolve into someone unique.

    • Hey any chance you guys can make videos of these blog casts and get them on PSN instead? This is cool to have still but a video would be much better and more easily accessible. I don’t have a laptop anymore so it makes sitting here for long boring and well just a bit too nerdy for me.

    • Thanks for the early show. Plenty of time to listen today :)
Just wanted to say I’m enjoying the heck out of Gravity Rush (Maid Pack go!). I love the art style, the music, and flying around collecting purple gems (purple things are catching my eye more in real life too). I really hope Sony makes Gravity Rush a cornerstone franchise going forward. It’s my personal favorite new IP since Assassin’s Creed.
      Happy 4th, PS gamers!

    • Happy 4th of July, guys. The Summer Sale was sick, i got four new games.

    • Nice podcast. Once again wish there was some Vita stuff coming (and not just DLC obviously). Feeling left out all of the time in camp Vita.

    • WOA! isnt about time SuperBot Show like at least 4 to 6 more characters and Modes? I mean… We all know Ratchet and clank, Jak and daxter, Cole and Sackboy are going in… but the real surprises characters… i understand that they will left them for the final show… but im kinda worried for the Exclusive roster of PS all Star Battle royal…. (AWFUL … SUPER AWFUL GENERIC NAME!!!!) bc they are announcing them too slow this game AT LEAST must own 20 exclusive ps characters… and the modes… oooh the modes… I Already decided im buying both games Vita and PS3 version if a bundle come like the MLB one…. but if theres not a stage out KO mode a la Smash…. sorry no buy for me.

Still Im very exited for Smash Station Royal since i was one of the ppl who was wishing for this game a looooong time!

can you guys help me my old account wouldn’t sign me in so i deleted my name on my playstation and made a new one and i cant get all the games or dlc i bought working please help

    • @9: wut… then just play something while you listen to it. I usually play some Vita, or 3DS while I listen to it. If you don’t have a handheld, then just put the mp3 on some device and listen on there. Then play PS3.

    • tommyvercetti389

any chance we will ever see looney tunes sheep raider driver 1 & 2 fear effect fighting force 2 sense were seeing these random ps1 classics appearing out of no where?

    • Metal Gear Solid best ps1 game!

make it happen for Vita and im sooo there!

    • I swear after seeing the trailers and demos for this game, it deserves an uncompressed 5.1 – 7.1 LPCM audio treatment like in Uncharted. They should at least take advantage of that for the PS3 version since they’re serving the 360 version more/first (they’re getting DLC content first before other platforms).

Of course with that said, I doubt they’ll do anything special for the PS3 version. This game really deserves a great audio experience too if not just visual. I’d hate to see all that remaining blu-ray space go to waste.

    • i hope one of you guys, or whoever is supposed to do it, makes a blog post here saying what next weeks discounts will be :) i just bought shadow of the colloseus never had the chance to play it before
