EVO 2012: PlayStation All-Stars in the Spotlight

Infiltration’s victory in the 2012 Street Fighter IV Arcade Edition finals late Sunday night marked the close of EVO 2012, the annual championship that sees international fighting game experts compete in top fighters like Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3, Virtua Fighter 5, and Tekken 6. This year, SuperBot Entertainment attended the competition to show off the PS3 and PS Vita versions of PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale, the studio’s upcoming love letter to PlayStation history and the fighting game genre.

Here Comes a New Challenger

PlayStation All-Stars’ EVO showing included a chance to sample newly announced characters Heihachi and Toro. Intitially, I had the most luck with Toro, using his deadly Mochi bombs, shuriken blasts, and comical bicycle kicks to torment foes from a safe distance. But despite his adorable appearance and goofy combat style, Toro is no lightweight. He’s a versatile, nuanced fighter thanks to three fighting stances that enable him to alternate between close-range attacks (Justice stance), wide crowd control (Oni stance), and long-range strikes (Torobi stance). His Supers are no slouch, either: Level one sends Toro flying forward to plow through nearby foes, level two dumps a falling star into the middle of the screen, and level three scores an automatic kill against every opponent on the screen as Toro lashes out in a Mochi-spattered rage.

PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale Toro and Heihachi reveal

“Toro can change fighting styles… it’s essentially a stance system. He actually has more than twice the number of moves of the other characters because each stance represents an entirely different move set.” — Omar Kendall, Game Director, PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale

Heihachi, meanwhile, excels in traditional close-range encounters. With his easy combo strings and trademark Demon Godfist uppercuts, Heihachi is a juggling machine capable of racking up loads of AP in short order. He’s also one of the few characters with a melee counter, which gives him an edge against other brawlers such as Big Daddy and Parappa. His Supers are eccentric but effective, beginning with a basic short-range unblockable hammer fist at level one and progressing to a devastating bear bodyguard (Kuma from Tekken) at level two. For his level three Super, Heihachi straps all three opponents to a missile and launches them into orbit — dude, harsh.

“At SuperBot, we’re huge fans of fighting games and I don’t think there’s any fighting game series that is more closely associated with PlayStation than Tekken. Heihachi is a great fit and he makes total sense.”
Omar Kendall, Game Director, PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale

Never Stop Flaying

Meanwhile, on the OLED screen, All-Stars looked virtually indistinguishable from its PS3 big brother. The PS Vita version rendered densely detailed characters, boisterous backgrounds, and an ultra-fluid framerate. Thanks to the development attentions of Bluepoint Games, the PS Vita version also sports an array of minor tweaks and enhancements aimed at portable pugilists, from the small (touch controls on menus) to the large (markers to help identify characters in wide camera angles). You can use the left analog stick or d-pad to control the action, and trigger those all-important Supers by pressing L and R together.

The game also supports Vita-to-PS3 crossplay support for multiplayer matches via Wifi. The crossplay feature was a pleasant surprise, based on my hands-on experiences, and it points to a future where portable gamers and console gamers can meet as equals. I played a series of four-player matches using crossplay, and the two PS3s and two Vitas coordinated the chaos without a single hitch. The future is now!

”We’re really happy with the PS Vita version, especially that it’s running at 60 frames per second with full crossplay support. I have to give credit to the guys at Bluepoint Games. They’re doing an amazing job.”

EVO: PlayStation All-Star Battle Royale panel with SuperBot Entertainment

Fighting Future

Elsewhere at EVO, the SuperBot crew presented the technical side of the game in a panel targeted at hardcore fighting game fans. PlayStation All-Stars fighters don’t have traditional health meters; instead, they attack opponents in order to build up energy, which they unleash in the form of several Super moves. Though you can’t block Super attacks, you can avoid many of them if you’re quick: SuperBot demonstrated a rolling technique that makes your character briefly invulnerable.

”You’re not whittling down life bars, you’re building up energy, or AP. The more damage you do, the more AP you gain. So it’s all about unleashing these Supers, which are essentially one-hit kills that score you points.” — Omar Kendall, Game Director, PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale

The EVO panel confirmed that the final game will support 1v1 and 2v2 team modes in addition to the default free-for-all mode, while an “infinite combo avoidance” system will prevent unstoppable combos. The developers also discussed the game’s grappling system, which presents players with several throw options: up, down, and lateral, with each choice presenting certain strategic benefits depending on your play style. Initiating a vertical throw, for example, gives you a chance to execute a juggle combo and score more AP.

After the panel, SuperBot also took time to field community questions regarding character customization (“there are definitely a lot of unlocks in the game”) and future guest characters (“there will be a combination of first-party [PlayStation] and third-party characters”) to netcode (“it feels fundamentally different…we don’t slow the whole game down to compensate for lag”).

One attendee asked about the studio’s plans for a final boss battle, and though Kendall confirmed that the game will feature a final boss, he admitted that the studio wasn’t ready to share who, exactly, it is. “Stay tuned,” he added. “For fans of PlayStation, our final boss will make a lot of sense.”

  • Awesome! I am really excited to get my hands on this game. :)

  • How many characters do you plan to have, overall, in the final product?

Also, will there be any sort of deal where we can buy both versions(PS3 ans PSVITA) of the games for a special price?

  • Yea, my biggest question is how big is the roster planned to be? At least 30 characters? When will this be revealed? I am wondering before I place my pre-order…

  • This game keeps looking better and better. But, I still stand by my lone character request of Vahn from Legend of Legaia. Also, when is Superbot going to announce some new characters? I know they said it once before, but I forgot…

  • I hope the final boss is Porygon Man. He seems to fit in with the general theme of the arena (The blue hex area shown in the new videos).

I also hope that that hexagonal field is an original arena, with the hexes changing altitudes throughout the fight, creating a really unique field.

And I hope that Nariko uses that same multiple stance system for the different forms of the Heavenly Sword. I can’t wait for tomorrow when more is revealed!

  • WOW!!! A smash-bros rip off with the worst, lamest, and overrated characters. Just what I always Wanted….Nah, I sitck with Smash-Bros Brawl. Better characters overall…..Once again, sony is riding the mighty Nintendo’s coat tails to stay in the game, how f**king sad….

  • Hmm looks pretty nice, really want to know character roster tho, other than that i might actually get =)

  • When will the Kevin Butler character be implemented and announced?

  • @estoc1: You haven’t paid much attention to this game, have you? And why create an account just to insult someone else’s work? It’s obvious due to the lack of an avatar, and the hatred for Sony’s characters. I don’t understand people like you…

And I’d still like to see Stitch, since he was in various games on the PSOne, and it would be pretty unique to have an enemy like that.

  • @ #2 Kid_Loser

They said it will be over 20 characters.

    http://gamerxchange.net/2012/07/06/playstation-all-stars-battle-royale-to-have-over-20-characters-two-more-revealed/

Final product, I’m guessing will be a good number and then DLC will likely come out after as well.

  • @estoc1

Sony isn’t riding it, they’ve been watching it, learning from it, and then remaking outdated games that Nintendo can’t seem to figure out what to do with. Nintendo is a dying company who caters to a very small population of gamers. They claim they’re for casual gamers yet why can’t a system be for both casual and hardcore gamers. This is where Sony prevails. Once again it isn’t about being first, it’s about being better.

  • I hope this gets read and considered. I did get a chance to play this at E3, and I loved it. But I think they should tweak Fat Princes, for someone that fat, she shouldn’t be that fast. Slow her up a tad bit.

One more thing…. Is it true that there will only be 20 playable characters when the game releases? I really hope that is not the case….Please reply

  • @6

Wow, you actually believe nintendo has the better roster?? Sad, just sad! Oh, and wheres that X-box/PS3 killer called the Wii U?? Not out yet, thats where it is! Seems like nintendo is riding sonys coat tails trying to catch up on their console, which will be obsolete once sony announces a new console soon (probably E3 next year). How sad nintendo.

  • lol @ butthurt nintendon fan children. …seriously, why troll ps blog when you could be playing wii fit with your mom?

  • TWO QUESTIONS.

    1. HOW MANY CHARACTERS IN THE GAME? (PLEASE LET IT BE MORE THAN 20 AND PLEEEEEASE INCLUDE CRASH AND LOGAN)

    2. IS THERE A STORY MODE?

I JUST WATCHED A CLIP OS SUPER SMASH BROS BRAWL AND ITS STORY MODE LOOKED LIKE ALOT OF FUN.. ESPECIALLY WHEN YOU CAN PLAY IT WITH YOUR FRIENDS..HOPEFULLY ON OR OFFLINE.A GAME WITH A STORY MODE AND A VS BATTLE IS A MUST HAVE IN MY BOOK OF GAME PURCHASES ..LOL

  • I think that characters should be:

Kevin Butler (Should be an unlockable character for getting the platinum trophy)
    Dragonborn
    Possibly Alucard (Castlevania SOTN)
Possibly Joel (The Last of Us)
    Ezio
    Sackboy
    Possibly a character from MAG
    Chell (Portal)
    GLaDOS (Possibly as a boss)
    Snake (Metal Gear Solid)
Possibly John Marston (Red Dead Redemption)

    These are just some predictions…..

  • @ #15 nYcFrEeWiLL82

    1) See comment #10 – They will have over 20 characters (so far they have only revealed 10. Supposedly 2 more will be revealed this weekend at SDCC)

    2) There is a story/campaign mode

  • THANKS FOR YOUR RESPONSE G-FORCE BUT IMA NED MORE CONFIRMATION THAN THAT..LOL EITHER A LINK OR A REPLY FROM OMAR HIMSELF..LOL

  • @Sid, did you say Toro has a mochi bomb? Hilarious. Is it all gooey & sticks to the opponent?

  • Will the PS3 version of the game, have a custom sound soundtrack option? Basically, its the ability to play my own music saved on PS3’s harddrive during actual offline gameplay. Having the custom soundtrack feature can make the game more personal. Even if this feature is not included in the game I’m still looking forward to remixed versions of songs.

  • I can’t wait for Comic-Con to hear about more characters being announced!

I’m sure Cole Mcgrath will be announced at Comic-Con since he is Sony’s superhero style character.

  • Please ask Omar/SuperBot these questions!!!

    1. Will the game support multiple PSN logins on the PS3?
    2. Will this game have an online pass? (please say no)
    3. Leaderboards?
    4. Stats – W/L ratio; K/D ratio; amount time used x character etc.
    5. Will there be an option to filter matches online so that we can choose to ONLY play with PS3 players or ONLY Vita players?
    6. Will there be challenge modes/Mini games?
    7. Which forums/message boards do they read?
    8. Are they annoyed that Paul Gale keeps leaking characters?

Can’t wait for their Comic-Con announcements! And what is Never Stop Flaying?

  • 60 FPS on the Vita?!
This is awesome. I’m getting this game on both consoles. Can’t Wait!

  • I’d also like a 3 vs 1 mode (Or 2 vs 1 if you lack another player/controller), where after you’ve defeated a boss, the player by himself can play as that boss in a “Juggernaut” mode. I think it would be unique, and a nice difference from the normal roster.

And I hope Cole MacGrath is one of the characters revealed at Comic-Con as well, maybe along with Finn from Sorcery (With magical spell moves). And also a new stage.

Also maybe have “Capture the Flag,” with objects strewn about the field.

  • @18 There is a link on comment 10. They just haven’t approved it yet. It’s being held for moderation. Or search “playstation all-stars battle royale over 20 characters on google.” lol Or Come back later and see if they approve the real comment #10. I guess the one you see isn’t the real 10 right now.

  • Parappa’s return? Tons of unlockables? A single-player campaign with CGI cutscenes? This is going to be truly awesome! I’m anticipating this more than I did Epic Mickey, Sonic Generations, and perhaps even LBP2! But the one thing that could make me want this game the most is Spyro the Dragon! I’d actually be surprised if Spyro and Crash aren’t in the game, even if they are owned by Activision.

  • i thought crash was owned by naughty dog? and this game looks hella lame

  • This is one of those games I can play over & over again! I hope DLC is in the works; I’ll like more stages & characters!

  • @TrIgga_Jay
Crash was originally developed by Naughty Dog, just as Spyro was originally developed by Insomniac. The two franchises were eventually sold to publishers like Universal, and eventually to Activision. The franchises had various developers after they were sold.

  • Pre-Ordered my copy! My only wish is that More playstation 1 and 2 characters, even rare to obscure ones end up included in the game at some point…even with just cameo appearances.

  • Will there be some kind of ps vita bundle for this, because that would be nice reason, other Gravity Rush, to finally get a vita.Oh, and will Kat from Gravity Rush be a fighter in this?

  • Since its comic con next. I feel as if we shud characters that represent comics.
    1)Cole McGrath
    2)BATMAN…so serious about him

  • I hope you guys implement a bundle deal for both. I most certainly would get both but may only get PS3 if the price for both is too steep. Overall, I can’t wait for this game. Keep doing what you’re doing Superbot!

  • Well i myself only buy Fighting Games… And with that Said this game is not a Fighting Game… I don’t care how much they try to say it is. It’s Not!

So i won’t be buying this one then if it was a true Fighting Game i would be on it for pre-order and at the store before they even opened…. LOL!

They could of made it more of a fighting game if they wanted fighting game fans to get this…

I buy all Fighting Games! But again i don’t see this a real Fighting Game Sorry!

But it just doesn’t work for me.

Even now u included Heichi and Toro man o’ man! I still can’t bring myself to buy it even thoe u added them to it. Arrgg! It’s just to bad that this could not been a more real Fighting game. I’d Be all over it! AWW!

  • SORA SORA SORA SORA SORA SORA RIKU RIKU RIKU RIKU RIKU RIKU Moogle Moogle Moogle Moogle Moogle THAT WOULD MAKE THE GAME 1000 times better!!!!!!

  • Throw my hat in again in hopes that we see Kazuma Kiryu from Yakuza in the game. He’s been a Sony exclusive character since 2005 and is actively starring in new games!

  • I think the final boss will be Sephiroth (Final Fantasy VII). Overrated? Yes, but it’s practically a no-brainer boss among the playstation-related franchises…

  • I wanna know if the game will have a demo,i’ll be good to see how the game works

  • Please Have Wander from Shadow of The Colossus as a playable character! He has a Sword,Bow and Arrow, Parachute, and a Horse. You can make it happen!

  • The game is looking really good so far, I think I’m gonna get both versions! As someone else said, I would also like a classic ring-out mode just like in Super Smash Bros. Keep up the good work Superbot!

I guess I’ll also throw out some characters I’d like to see:
    Sackboy
    Spyro or Hunter the Cheetah
    Faith (Mirror’s Edge)
    Cole MacGrath
    Lara Croft
    Hunter (Monster Hunter)
    Kat (Gravity Rush)
A monster from War of the Monsters

  • Oh and for the final boss…..Yellow Light of Death!! or PSN hackers! (seriously)

  • Come on, people. The game’s coming out this fall, it’s not as if they’re still looking for character ideas.
And “only” 20? Does anyone remember Street Fighter 2, with 8 fighters, two being Ryu and Ken? Twenty is a lot.
I like that there are character customization options. Are these simply color swaps, or different looks like the pre-order perks?

  • Someone had suggested a Sly Cooper stage mixed with InFamous 2 by having the beast come in and attack, so I’d just like to state that I think that would be an amazing idea for a Paris stage (With the Eiffel Tower in the background, and the beast interacting with it in his attack).

And I’d still like a Journey and Uncharted stage, with the Uncharted 3 plane crashing into the desert of Journey.

But I do wonder what that stage in the images on the Community Forums is (I guess it’ll be revealed at Comic-Con). It looks like a mechanical place, and I can only think of the Blimp from Sly 2 of the top of my mind (Taking out Ratchet & Clank and Jak & Daxter). Maybe I just haven’t noticed something about it yet…

  • Omar Kendall looks to be charging a HADO-KEN in the pics lol XD

  • I CANT WAIT UNTILL THIS AND LITTLE BIG PLANET KARTING!!!!!!!

Will there be some kind of story mode?

  • hope KB is this mythical boss

  • I’m excited to hear about the next two characters at the comic con panel.

  • @ 39 omg yes Wander would be amazing in it and probably my favorite character in the entire game like level 3 finisher colossus smashes it foot down onto you or something would be awesome ; D gonna play shadow of the colossus hd now xD

There has been other games like Smash Brothers Brawl before Nintendo even made it, they just made it popular. So think before you speak, Smash Brothers Brawl isn’t anything new.

  • they should have a lbp2 story design. a bunch of fights in a specific area then a boss. it allows for many bosses cuz sony has so many great bosses: zeus, persephone, the collector, the negativatron, that annoying bird thing from starhawk, emmet’s brother, awesome white robe future cole etc. i would hate to miss out on some epic boss battles due to only one boss. the final boss would still be an important decision.
