June 2012 PSN Top Sellers – Magic: The Gathering Casts a Powerful Spell

Morgan Haro's Avatar + Posted by Morgan Haro on Jul 11, 2012 // Community Manager, PlayStation Digital Platforms

June proved to be another great month for PlayStation gamers seeking out the latest in downloadable gaming.

Our congrats go to Wizards of the Coast’s Magic: The Gathering – Duels of the Planeswalkers 2013 for taking the top spot in June! Duels of the Planeswalkers 2013 features amazing artwork and intuitive yet deep tactical competition, so it’s no surprise that fans summoned this download more than any other in June.

On the PS Vita side, the Metal Gear Solid HD Collection proved that, after 25 years, Snake’s still got it. PSN users downloaded this portable collection in droves in order to re-live two of Snake’s finest missions, Metal Gear Solid 2 and Metal Gear Solid 3, with high-res visuals, extra content, and transfarring.

There’s more, too. Legend of Dragoon continued to reign over PSone Classics, Need for Speed: Most Wanted conquered the PS2 charts, and Monster Hunter Freedom Unite took top honors in PSP. Have any predictions for next month’s list? Let us know your thoughts in the comments!

#40 You’re really lucky digeythedog. Unfortunately, I didn’t get a LBP Karting beta code, not a first pick I guess. A shame really, because I was really looking forward to this. Some of my fellow Internet associates did get some, and their first impressions do not live up to the excitement they had. They do like the costumes though. Though their comments did make me fall off the fence on whether I should preorder, just a bit, but I’ll wait it out and see.

Duels of the Planeswalkers 2013 is a fun game, but it’s a step down in terms of couch co-op. Every new edition has made couch co-op worse. The first game had a complete 2-headed giant campaign. That was the most fun I’ve ever had with Magic. The second game took out the 2-headed giant campaign, but added archenemy. It was alright. This game now has planechase, but you can’t play that in local co-op. Instead of a game that I buy every DLC for and play for months, 2013 is a game I’m completely done with once I get all of the trophies. Still worth the price, but disappointing to me.

@17 Wouldn’t it be easy to just do a study and run the numbers and see what the sales figures are for those games that actually release a demo for are against those that don’t?

Or maybe someone has done another study that shows that for those games that have provided a demo, sales are worse than if no demo is ever released to begin with

I never understood how Castle Crasher is top 10. i played that game daily and barely can get online. do people just buy it and not play it?

Kinda disappointed with Vita sales. im going to come off as unbiased, but i was never a fan of MGS, and i guess i feel like GR should have been number 1. Also feel kinda sad that that DC lego game is even in the top 10. from what i heard its a port of the 3ds version, and that version isnt all that good at least not compared to the consoles which i feel the Vita could have been.

Good to see LoD topping the ps1. im sorry but FF7 was there for too long and its good to see people actually buying a “good” RPG. dont get me wrong i own and enjoyed ff7, but the praise it gets is unneeded. its a good RPG, but its not as great as people make it out to be. (and this is coming from someone who owned it originally on launched date for the ps1)

Psp what can i say MH has always ruled top. its a great game so its great that people are buying. hopefully this means that we get a MH game on the Vita like how the 3ds is getting.

@iTofuMan The Batman Lego Game isn’t in the top 10 for that exact reason. It was a port of the 3DS version which was a port of the DS version. That was extremely lazy of the developers to do, and nobody’s going to buy a $39.99 port of a port. The Vita could have handled everything that the console version had, and because it was poorly made, I and many others didn’t buy it. I was planning on buying it, but got it for my console instead.

I’m surprised Atlus doesn’t have any games in the top downloads. Nearly everything of their’s is 50% off this month. I was thinking of getting Persona 3 Portable for my Vita, can anybody suggest any other PSP games or Minis I should get for my Vita? I never owned a PSP and am discovering all these great games I’d never played before. I’ve got Patapon 2 and Battlefront 2 on my Vita so far.

At my last comment, I guess I misread this article’s title. I guess it makes sense that last month’s best-selling games weren’t Atlus games…

We just want progress….we’re beyond yesteryear psp technology….so stop with all the lagging and denial of advancement. The vita should have dropped on the market out the door with the ability to play ps3 games or some of the that is… With no hinges…it is marketed as the NEVER STOP PLAYING and NEXT GENERATION PORTABLE… Well damn prove it and stop being so damn modest with the offerings this is ridiculous…..and then you guys wonder why people start to hack. It’s a shame that cellphones get better content than the 3G version and rolling out the door with games as well as sales.

I’m just saying live up to your potential and give us what we want! If I wanted to simply remote play I would just go and grab my psp…If I wanted to play minis all day I would grab a whack cellphone…..If I want to be the “Next Generation” not current or pre…The DS shouldn’t even be considered as an argument piece with the system…You guys are really performing sub par of what you could be at…I love the device just stop stunting it’s potential and be willing to make progress that’s noteworthy. I’m behind you all but I seriously think you need to get your heads out of your asses and move with a sense of urgency on this as well as make ambitious leaps. On another note why is advocate party still behind the power curb?

Sorry for the mis post on AdHoc party is what I meant this auto correct on iPad is killer. There should be no reason that AdHoc party for the us is behind as it is. I mean seriously….would you enjoy something that is based in entertainment and is slow pushing the envelope of tech. I hear other guys rants about ps1 games and all. I get it but, we should be rolling in preview tech for ps4or the likes thereof on this system. There is no reason a Joe Smoe on YouTube is providing proof of concept for a game like KillZone 3 on the vita within a couple of months and were fighting with the actual guys at the root of the system and we can’t even get PS1games on tap. This is real bogus, asinine, and unbecoming of an industry leader. We are still even debating on why the psp remaster collection which was due out last year hasn’t even hit down the pipe yet…REALLY. Like who’s afraid to make progress an advise the powers that be of these mediocre offerings as far as tech is concerned.

I might as well have just turned on my original psp and play that instead. This is ridiculous. Stay proactive pushing the envelope as you guys did with the 3d technology and set the damn standard otherwise your system will remain compared to a DS…That speaks volumes to others not on a vita yet! Think about it for a second…Nintendo might as well be a pedophile company because all they are catering to with the games is very small children and all the bells and whistles to draw them in kinda like that old guy from family guy that keeps trying to get Peter griffins son to come get some candy in his basement. Step up to the plate or move your messages and rants from E3 and all these other commercials and the like about a Powerful system.Just like IGN said stop with the Hype machine if you all aren’t going to deliver…

It’s always so heartening to see great original work succeed. I played the first couple of hours of “Journey” before getting busy last month and I’m really looking forward to playing it all the way through – meantime, I’ve been listening to the soundtrack on loop on my iPod.

And then there’s “Gravity Rush” and I think I’m in love… Nothing that I have ever played before has really given me the feeling I used to have as a child when I’d dream about flying. And the world is so beautifully realized. And, unlike Gamespot and some others, I had no problem with the combat at all – for me it was just a palate-cleanser between Kat’s next shot into the stratosphere and the search for more of those oh-so-addictive purple gems.

All three manufacturers make games I love, but what makes me love Sony is the way that they invest in and support genuinely original and visionary games like “Journey,” “Gravity Rush” and “Shadow of the Colossus.” And these are the kind of games that make me truly care about this art-form.

to be honest, i don’t see why people like journey, played through the demo and it wasn’t anything special. when it asked me to purchase the full game i laughed and got fat princess instead.

Well to chime in on demos I certainly make them a priority in purchasing decisions. I think I have purchased maybe 3 games over PSN with out having played a demo (out of, oh geeze, 30 now?); and of those 3 I waited for a demo and when one did not come out eventually caved (which is rare).

Even games with critical acclaim I will hold back on until I play a demo. My tastes are just too sporadic and/or out of the mainstream? Too many ‘big’ games end up being rather disappointing to me. That being said I waited for the Journey demo before it helped me make the decision to purchase it.

Don’t have any hard feelings though if it is not monetarily worth it to a developer. I get that.

@44: Reviews are good but I consider demos a much more reliable indicator even with the odd occasion when the demo is a portion of the game that makes it seem better or worse than it really is. Plus, I personally know of at least one gaming review source (it is a big one) that improves scores for games that have ad space.

See? GTAIV and episodes from liberty city in the top 10 as well as Max Payne in ps2 classics. Now release the 2 GTA’s for ps2 on psn. I’ll definitely buy it again. What are you guys waiting for?
