Crunchyroll App Out Now on PS3, Brings Anime and Asian Drama To Your TV

Crunchyroll on PS3

Hi, anime and Asian drama fans out there. Today, we launched the Crunchyroll app on PlayStation 3! The app allows Crunchyroll premium members to watch our entire catalog of anime and Asian drama, while free members can stream a sizeable collection of our content. You can learn more about our membership plans and pricing here, and you’ll be able to sign up for a free 30-day trial on your PS3.

Crunchyroll has hundreds of Japanese anime titles across a myriad of genres. The app includes access to our simulcast titles, usually available a few hours after the first broadcast in Japan. My personal favorite is Gosick, a series full of mystery, history, and romance. It’s true — anime is not just for guys.

  • pretty cool stuff :D

  • Trying it and everything I watch is only subbed. I like watching subbed anime on my PC but not on my large TV. I have to look down too far to read the subs and miss what’s actually happening. What’s the other one coming? Neon Alley? Hope it has some dubbed content. I’m liking all these nice legal alternatives becoming more accessible. :)

@20 – Had the same issue. They seem to have forgotten to enable letter input for that section. :P

@46 – Agreed. I use Crackle all the time on my PC + tablet. Love to see an app for PS3.

  • @heedthevil: Pretty sure Neon Alley will be all dubbed if that’s more your thing.

  • I think Netflix has a pretty good bunch of anime, but I’m worried that Funimation might move on when Neon Alley comes out. This app isn’t for me. The anime doesn’t really appeal to me besides Bleach.

This is getting me a little excited for Funimation’s Neon Alley though. I’ll have to compare the two when they come out. along with the pricing too.

I’m really glad that Sony is trying more venues of service.

  • That’s great and all, but the rumor I hear is that for exclusive Crunchyroll member content, you have to pay about $8 a month, the same amount for Hulu Plus. Their anime selection has broaden quite a bit, big hit titles plus more. Granted, Crunchyroll likely has up-to-date episodes for Fairy Tail and other titles, but I watched the last season of House, majority of seasons for South Park and Family Guy, all seasons of Castle, Community, Lost, Spaced, Firefly, Misfits, Awake, Miami Vice, The A-Team, constant updated episodes of Daily Show, documentaries, etc…. for the same price of $8 a month. Right now I’m watching the season 3 of Inuyasha. All seasons are on Hulu. Just this series alone, let’s say conservatively $25 per season box set, is over $200 worth! I think I got my fill for $8 on Hulu. I’ve always been interested in watching Inuyasha, but it’s too pricey for me to pick up the entire series.

I’m not knocking Crunchyroll. Great site! I just don’t see the value when I pay $8 a month for a service that streams not only great anime titles but quite a bit of tv shows as well. If anyone becomes a premium Crunchyroll member on this app, let me know how it is. Thanks. =)

  • Sweet, anime on demand! I might get this but are the vids subbed or dubbed? I personally prefer subbed in most cases except FMA where its brilliantly dubbed

On another note… omg she mentioned Gosick! One of my favourite animes, and hey, even though it does have romancedoesnt mean its notfor guys! I found it very sweet, suspenseful, teary and so much more! Everyone should watch it!

  • unless It was just the titles I tested its english subs, how anyone can stand listening to japanese people talk while watching the bottom of the screen to read wtf they are saying is beyond me.

  • When I heard Sony and Crunchyroll had teamed up like this, I thought ‘awesome’ but wasn’t expecting a product for months. You guys pulled it off, I opened my RSS tonight and almost fell out of my chair, lol. Now I can watch quality anime on my big tv, instead of my monitor.
I’ve been a Crunchyroller for about a year now and I can’t say enough about how easy to use their service is. It feels good to be able to watch great anime without pirating it, suffering through a terribad dub, or paying $20-$40 dollars for a 4 episodes on a disc. Hopefully this will help drive more people to their business, and help Crunchy get more digital distro licences.

  • this app sucks balls

the anime that im watching always freezes for a couple of seconds

everytime i have to watch a second video, it freezes and goes back to xmb

and its extremely slow at loading videos

really crunchyroll, this app sucks, ill just stick with good ol netflix

  • I was seriously expecting this app to be just like the phones and the web browser where you stream the videos free of charge, with the only exception of viewing ads. But I was really disappointed to not being able to have this option. Kinda Sucks…:'(

  • @54 ReptileHand: I’ve tried Netflix. Haven’t had it since they separated the streaming from the DVD service, but when I had it, the anime selection was ok, but everything I watched was dubbed. I prefer subbed, but I like some dubbed titles as well. Once I switched over to Hulu, I realised it was more my speed, with tv shows and mainly subbed anime titles, mainstream and non-popular anime series.

Also, sucks that Bleach is over, but it had a good run, despite the nagging filler episodes throughout the series (Same thing with Naruto, damn filler). Anyways, felt like it was dragging its feet after the Aizen saga story arc. The last bit with the Fullbringer story arc peeked my interest and got me back into watching, but it was just to bring everything full circle and wrap up the series. :-/

  • I would actually like if crunchyroll had ANY dubs. Next you have to do something with the animenetwork or funimation network to get some dubs. I hate reading my anime.

  • @ReptileHand Funimation produces, markets, and distributes anime and other entertainment properties in the United States and international markets. So they won’t be leaving Netflix. Viz Media owns Neon Alley. But I agree that Netflix has pretty good anime.

  • @57 USRevenge2: You get used to it. lol. That was my excuse as well, until my friends gradually switched me over from dubbed to subbed. In order to expand my repertoire of anime watched, they sat me down to watch mainstream anime titles with excellent dubs: Trigun, Full Metal Panic, Irresponsible Captain Tylor, Berserk, Hellsing, etc. Gradually they showed me other titles that just sounded better subbed. I probably would have passed on Love Hina if I had tried to watch it dubbed. English voice acting was terrible and so annoying. But while watching it subbed, I thoroughly enjoyed it and is one of my favorite anime titles now. Japanese voice actors seem to put more expression and emotion into their lines. Just can’t get away with not noticing flat expressionless English voice actors reading from a sheet of paper when you understand English. Besides, watch enough anime subbed, you’ll start to pick up a few words in Japanese. My parents are kind of happy I got my younger brothers into anime. They’re listening/ learning a new language and reading at the same time, lol. It is kind of scary when my brother started to sing along with one of the Naruto opening songs without looking at the Japanese subtitles though, lol.

  • @skiedragon81, cracke is a sony site, crunchyroll has NO say in its operation!

  • Oh and btw the videos constantly freezing for me as well, that and the credit card requirement for the “free trial” make it a non starter. sorry but they must do better. a LOT better! I can get anime on demand elsewhere at better price & performance.

  • if crackle is a sony site why is it on xbox as a pay gold app? geez the complaints on here ugh! some of them are without merit so i wont even bother commenting on them. And the Bleach manga is over not the anime, and funimation may be pulling everything since they have their own channel and neon alley which would make netflix useless. and there is a credit card or paypal requirement for any streaming service just about. Or bank account cuz u know u have to be over 18 to the kids that are complaining. oh and if ur just in naruto- why dont u go watch disney since they own the rights- which made it suck ugh damn u VIZ. Nabari no Ou way better than naruto anyways. Hopefully Funimation wont go the same way as AMV with their channel and go broke and have to split it up into several companies- as for me crunchy roll and hulu are fine.

  • as far as the dubbed and subbed thing, its PERSONAL PREFERENCE for me its always been about what anime it is. for instance- some japanese seiryuu are just too annoying and they hurt my ears. But some have award winning excellent duns- for instance crispin freeman is good in well… anything lol made a badass Alucard and a awesome Kyon for haruhi suzumiya which proves americans if they are committed put just as much effort into a dub as a seriyuu.

  • also crackle does something no one else does which is similcasting when it comes out in japan its here too.

  • Ok what is this?

I downloaded Crunchyroll and started my 30 day Free Trial and I’m already spotting bugs EVERYWHERE. Michelle you really need to tell your coders and programmer to start picking up the slack because this is embarrassing to even call a workable App.

First off what the hell at videos not playing? I’m trying to watch Fairy Tail but the video doesn’t play, that goes for the next 8 episodes after the begginng of the time skip Arc. Next why the hell does the App crash when I want to play the an episode and then send me back to the XMB, as if freezing my PS3 isn’t terrible enough.

Also whats up with episodes lagging like crazy? The video lags so bad that it tries to catch up with the audio. You guys really started on the wrong foot here when it comes to first impression, I expect a patch by this week cause my 30 day free trial isn’t going to stop cause of your mistakes.

  • cruncyroll is rolling out a patch soon this is baiscally a beta teset.. and this is the second time i have said this.

  • and why are u yelling at michelle its CRS fault not sonys.

  • Nice selection. Weak app. Frame rate glitches and sound gets ahead of video. Was it even tested prior to launch. The mobile app works better.

  • @53 – Thanks for the info. And no, I don’t prefer dub, I just have a large TV in a dumb location. I’ve thought until today that Crunchy was blocked from my country for some reason so it hasn’t been clicking that I can actually access it from ten other different devices… awesome.

I think I’ll end up getting both Crunchy and Neon subscriptions. $7/mo each seems decent to me. Up North we don’t get a lot of love when it comes to anime selection (barely any on cable channels, Netflix Canada still kinda sucks, no Hulu) so I’m a little ecstatic over this anime buffet.

And Crunchy’s working great for me right now on my bare bones Internet connection.

  • Heh, I remember them saying it was going to be US only at launch. Meh, i’ll stick with the countless other free anime streaming sites for now :).

  • Sweet, I had a feeling that they were going to make an app for watching anime. Usually I surf the web on my ps3 and watch it straight of the net, But doing that cause my system to freeze sometimes…
Now that I have a better [Gateway] I can watch anime with a breeze.!
    It only gets better.

Believe as you wish young one, I brought the information you could easily find forward.

  • Why does this exist while there is still no Crackle app? Boggles the mind! Crackle is pretty hard to deal with in a web browser!(well the PS3’s web Browser)

  • Oh, And how come crunchyroll website will give 30 day trial to students who use .edu addresses on the canadian website? No Canadian university uses .edu for students. Either remove that on the canadian website or make it check against a canadian instution.

  • Very nice app. Finally I get to watch Crunchyroll on my TV without having to rig it via the iPad to my Apple TV. I’m impressed by how nice the picture quality is on the drama’s that I routinely watch. Simulcasts like Dr. Jin and Vision are my current favorites.

  • @skiedragon81 Y’know you’d save yourself a lot of embarassment if you’d do even the most basic fact checking before you come on here running your mouth. The only person your embarassing is yourself. As for the comment about beta testing, whoever believes that has no understanding how profesionnally produced software is created. Releasing software to the public for payment and only testing afterwords is purely amateur hour. This industry is littered with the smoking wrecks of those projects that failed to heed this fact. People pay for results not hype. The result here is supposedly a streaming video service. But its not yet ready for primetime.

  • are they only gunna b talking in chinese?

  • I tried starting an account for a free trial on my PS3, but it declined my debit card twice and I double checked both times. Either having to type in the country is messing it up, because I typed both “USA” and “United States”, it will be better if it was a drop down menu. Or it is doing a authorization for more money than I have on my card right now (5 dollars and some change), which I will understand if it was only a dollar, even though the app itself says they won’t charge the card until the end of the trial. But I think it is courtesy to mention if you are going to pre-authorize more than a dollar, many websites do so already.

  • Will we gain access to The NEW “Berserk” series with this new app???????

  • @captian
dude read the rules for the ps comments it directly states open to everyone – but dont be a jerk.

  • and on another note i was quoting what CR was saying in their own forums

  • also i said basically as well as several others did in this forum. You yell at me for fact checking but dont go back and read other posts. Its really hypocritical.

  • ih and yr arguement still didnt answer why crackle app is on xbox but not ps3 if its owned by sony!

  • @Sanji909

Hulu and Crunchy are aimed at different markets.

Hulu is about having everything, but for anime, its pretty lackluster.. you got a few really well known things, but not many simulcasts.

Crunchy is aimed at just anime fans, but it specializes in it. Its got about 4/5th of all currently airing anime simulcasted, and it has much more variety than just the shonen battle stuff you’d find on Hulu.

Personally, I’m not really into American TV but I love anime, so Crunchyroll is the way to go for me.

  • cruncy roll does simulcasting not crackle sry to everyone it was late.

  • Geez… So much hatred.

Anyway, thanks for the application. I hope there is patch for it soon!

  • ok just ran into a huge bug with this app and i mean HUGE! just got done watching bleach and the video and sound was great. some slowdown here and there so no biggie. as soon as the show is over i close the app and” bam!”, no video or audio output from ps3. too over an hour to get back. needless to say once i got my ps3 back up, i deleted the app. i know its beta but almost bricking my ps3 is a no-no.

  • i love coming home to watch anime in Japaneses i dont know why people are crying they got read subs so what if you dont like it than dont watch anime that how it post to be we are just lucky they put some shows in english for us and app is asian tv so not everything will be in english also if go on there site it said there working on the issues .

  • this application is EXACTLY what the North American market needed! For ages people had to use illegal means to watch new episodes of their favourite shows before it took years to localize, now fans can watch it instantly for a fair price.

Mark my words, this is the Netflix of Anime.

  • from there website

    Hi everyone,

Great news! We just launched our app on PS3™. The app is available for free download. Premium members can login with their existing account to access all the benefits, including streaming the latest episodes (no ads of course!), accessing the queue, searching for shows, and more.

If you don’t have a Premium membership, you can still download the app for free and watch the first episode of every simulcast show to try it out. You can also signup for a free trial directly on the PS3. There is currently a special 30-day free trial offer if you sign up directly on PS3™.

Currently the Crunchyroll PS3 app is available in the US and Canada PlayStation Network. We are working on bringing it to other countries. We are also planning on rolling out 720p and 1080p on PS3™ later this year, so stay tuned.

Now go turn on your PS3, download the Crunchyroll app, and give it a good rating -_-!

    ~Shinji

P.S. Since this is the first release, there are some known issues and we are actively working on them.

  • So you can figure this crunchy thing out , but not a YOUTUBE app ??? or a HBO GO app??? or an ESPN app??

man, the news stories are true!!! Sony is losing its touch !!

  • It only has english sub, shoulda had english also, very stupid especialy if u dont understand japanese and hate subs

  • @skiedragon, Look kid I don’t really care about your arrogant little attitude, nor is your BS in anyway relevant. You call me a hypocrite yet you scream “don’t be a jerk” when thats exactly what you yourself are doing. I called you out on your lack of accurate info yet you call me a liar. Guess what kid nobody cares in the least about your little tired. The point being either grow up or shutup. nobody likes a screaming fanboy so stop being one or if you can’t then keep quiet from now on.

  • Waiting for the Vita version!!!
