July 2012 PSN Top Sellers: The Walking Dead Shambles to the Top

The Walking Dead returns! After dominating the top spot in May, the Telltale Games team took the top slot once again in the month of July when Episode 2’s Add-On spurred gamers to download the core game more than any other title last month.

Though Metal Gear Solid HD Collection is well-represented on the PS Vita charts, it was the augmented reality game Table Top Tanks that actually snagged the top spot in July. Escape Plan saw a boost, due in part to its new Underworld DLC, but I’m sure we’re all curious to see if Sound Shapes makes the charts next month.

Check out the others below, and let us know what you think in the comments!

Movers and Shakers

  • The Walking Dead – The release of the second episode, Starved For Help, spurred strong pickup for the Walking Dead, landing the apocalyptic title in the top spot for July.
  • Rainbow Moon – A potent debut for this well-liked PS3-exclusive strategy RPG. Who says Eastern RPGs are dead?
  • Batman: Arkham City – The release of Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises may have something to do with Arkham City’s nabbing the number 10 spot. Or maybe Batman is just awesome.
  • Dyad – The exclusive PSN racer/puzzle/shooter hybrid managed to debut at number 12 in July. Try it, you’ll like it!
  • Quantum Conundrum – The physics-based puzzler from one the driving forces behind Portal struck a chord with gamers in July, landing it at number 17.

  • When will there be a post about PS+ this month?

  • hey Morgan are Sorcery and Motorstorm Apocalypse coming to playstation plus this month? how about ModNation Racers Road Trip or Wipeout 2048?

  • Morgan was it Monday when you are going to announce PlayStation plus stuff? By the way any updates on the Beta?thanks :-)

  • Ports over Gravity Rush again in the Vita charts. SMH This is why we can’t have nice things.

  • were getting outland and what else for ps+ morgan? come on the playstation newsletter gave it Off already lol let us know please :)

  • Need for Speed Most Wanted is selling really well as a PS2 classic, huh? It’s claimed the #1 and #5 slot.

  • I’m gonna be very interested in Sound Shapes’ progress in August. I’m also happy that Gravity Rush seems to be dong fine.

I’m surprised Quantum Conundrum hasn’t done better. I’ve been meaning to buy it but haven’t gotten around to it.

Also, I know you hate hearing about it but it’s now August and by the end of this month I expect, AT LEAST, word on PS1 classics for Vita. Trying to get lost in Breath of Fire IV ya know? Can’t do that on my beautiful 50 inch tv.

  • So glad to see Festival of Blood selling so well still. I was terrified for the franchises future when inFAMOUS 2 bombed commercially, but the original, and FoB’s sales, along with the critical reception all 3 titles have received has really cemented inFAMOUS as a Playstation staple which is a huge relief.

  • Just double checked some sales figures, looks like i2 probably sold similarly to the original (both kinda low, but not terrible) still glad regardless Festival of Blood is doing so well, it’s a really great game; one of the best PSN titles for sure.

  • Legend of Dragoon in that top spot…I hope it stays up there so Sony might have the incentive to give it a shot for this console generation.

  • Really enjoyed the walking dead 2 my only complaint is that getting the other 3 episodes now for 5 bucks a piece. I see this as a nice game but I don’t see myself playing it more than once. Other than that Dyad was cool I really am enjoying it and I cant wait for the end of the month when the Journey collection releases on disc.

  • “Who says Eastern RPGs are dead?

Eastern? Congrats to the developers of Rainbow Moon for their success. The developers, SideQuest Studios, are from Germany though.

Also, buy Dyad. It’s a real shame this game is not in the top 5. 85 on Metacritic, critical acclaim, a great trippy indie game.

Also Morgan, why are Minis so neglected by SCEA? Where is the Top 10 Minis? You get all this really cool stuff on XBLIG and DreamBuildPlay, those are the sort of games that should be coming out as Minis and be available on Vita. No wonder the Vita is tanking, no third party support, no support from bedroom developers. Half the small devs I talk to are oblivious to the Playstation Mobile SDK.

  • @Morgan:
On the main site under PS One Tab of Featured Games, That much desired Mickey Mania game is advertised.
That hurts people’s feelings when they learn it’s not available on the store!

  • *Correction* Featured Games-PSP= Mickey Mania

  • I’m happy to see Festival of Blood still high on the charts, maybe Sucker Punch is working on the next Infamous, hmmm? Also it’s nice to see The Amazing Spider Man on there being a day and date $59.99 game, even though it’s number 19 it’s still a good sign of our digital warehouse future.

  • nice to see mgs hd collection for vita is in 2nd place! i bought it myself pretty epic but the transfer for it dident give me all the trophys when i went from vita to ps3. but it should b highly rated.

  • Looks like they are still trying to pass off a part of TWD as a full game. I’m sorry, but no matter how hard you try it’s not a full game. Each part is 1/5 of a game.

    • whether you define it as a full game or not, it still moved a ton of units. episodic gaming is a good thing! i’m personally excited about the opportunity for pubs and devs to put out these types of experiences.

  • also table tops is 1st lol of course its only $2 lol. moterstorm rc truly should be number 1 because its free.

  • and lenged of dragoon tops ps1 NICE!!!!! WALKING DEAD DOUBLE NIIIIIICCCEEEEEE!

  • Guys you’re waiting until Monday for the new PS+ stuff like everyone else. I hate it when there’s a comment completely off topic form the blog post.

1st comment, “what’s our free games!?”

Well anyways. I’m glad the Walking Dead is first, the game is amazing (from PS+) and has prompted me to be the season pass since I’m not renewing Plus in september (i.e. so many games so little time / no discounted or free DLC). But be careful you need Episode 1 to access the other episodes.

Also I just started playing MediEvil since I got it for free from Plus last year during July or June. It’s an amazing game with an amazing level design, objectives, music. I can’t get over it. I guess I became a fan overnight! It’d be nice if you guys went back to that, I see you took advantage of that during the sports sale thingy. But I hope that wasn’t a one time thing.

It really gives me the chills how people keep yelling for games… I mean, don’t you already have enough? I don’t want to ask for any more games. I’m getting 3 a month alongside my huge digital and physical backlog. That’s a lot. You guys should be grateful…

  • Good old Crash Bandicoot pushes into the top five for PSone games is amazing to me. I like the game, but man I thought all the good RPG’s would rain supreme until the end of time. I like seeing this report and seeing what game sold well. Keep up the hard work blog team.

    Sold.

  • no wonder so many plus users where mad , there was a lot of complaining about i already own walking dead

  • Morgan,if i buy Metal Gear Solid ps1 classic from the europe store will it work on my US ps3?

  • you should add games from marvel . there is not one ps3 marvel full game in the store , im taking about spider man , iron man , thor , captain america , wolverine , xmen , etc … these games are hard to find in retail stores.

  • Hi, Morgan,
I checked playstation blog almost daily (except weekends :P), and I enjoy reading them.

I have to say, I enjoy your section of blog the most, because, you always take your time and replied to many comments (even bad ones! ) by readers.

I just want to say thank you for taking your time and read and reply to comments XD

    • that’s kind of you to say, thank you! for me, i just like to interact with my fellow gamers, so it’s really a pleasure on my end, even if it’s a comment that’s critical in nature.

  • I purchased Catherine and i love it. In my opinion, it deserved to be inside the top 20 because it’s an awesome game and it was more cheaper on PSN than retail.

One of the best purchases that it’ve done on PSN. Thanks a lot!.

  • Yeah that’s true Morgan does respond to us. Rey never reply to us on the drop -_- but on TWD, are you guys making it free to distract us from asking about episode 3?

  • Hey Morgan, I have noticed on the Vita PSN Store a Mini has been placed in the PSP section by mistake. It is Mecho Wars, a great game by the way, and has been there for a couple weeks now just giving you guys a heads up so you can get placed back in the Mini section. Love the hard work you guys do in bringing us more compatibility between Minis and digital PSP games on Vita. Thanks.

    Sold.

P.S. I also checked the Mini section and Peggle for PSP is there. Again this is on the Vita store front. Thanks again. Plus member for life.

  • Catherine seemed like a really interesting game when I played the demo a long time ago. I would not be upset to see that end up as a free PS Plus game.

TWD games have been great fun for me, no surprise to see them selling so well. Hopefully it inspires other game companies to follow suit, I think episodic content done right can be great. I do hope that PS Plus will either get some more episodes for free (doubtful) or get the other 3 at discounted rates, because otherwise we only save $5 dollars as opposed to having just bought the season pass for $20. I’m sure they have thought out of that though and I will just have to wait and see.

Keep up the good work Morgan.

  • I’m not surprised one bit at the PS1 Classic sales. Final Fantasy VII, VIII and IX are always going to sell. LOD being at $5.99 makes that RPG far more intising (not to mention it has a huge fanbase) and Crash Bandicoot redeem codes can be bought at Game Stop for only $1.99.

  • I wish there were some actual numbers to go along with the lists.

  • will there be any more ps plus stuff?

  • I can say for sure alot of these top 20’s is NOT based on sales, real steal which is very old news in the game world being from last year just to name one example. But as others have said without any sales numbers its all just fantasy. And no that tired old lie of the sales being some corporate equivalent of the old coldwar state secret just doesn’t wash. Every other medium in the entertainment industry brags loudly when they produce a hit. The point is this: extraordinary claims require extraordinary proof. Really guys backing up what you say will put a big dent in the negative publicity.

  • Hey Morgan, I’ve just read about the early September release date for Jet Set Radio. I REALLLY want this game for my Vita but the PS+ release date for PS3 is a whole month ahead of the Vita release!

Can we please OH PLEASE have copies for both systems when we purchase the game just like Sound Shapes did? This should be commonplace by now!

Back on topic: Love the see Legend of Dragoon toping the PS1 chart, I’m still hoping this game gets some sort of remake or sequel someday… :)

  • Any word on a western release of Earth defense force 3:Portable?

  • I’m curious since some of them are on the list.

Are you counting people downloading the free ‘instant games’ in these numbers?

Or is stuff like Gothim City Imposters/Festival of Blood doing that well purely based on full purchases?

  • i know this is offtopic, but will the Directv NFL Sunday ticket app be available for this season?

  • Cool.

So the Festival of Blood is still doing this well all on it’s own.

    Gotta love that.

Anything that encourages/funds Sucker Punch to make more games, Infamous or otherwise, is a good thing :)

  • Morgan is there any chance of seeing Baldars gate 1&2, and also Champion’s of Norrath and return to arms in the near future?

  • I kinda have to agree with a certain post I read above for Walking Dead. I’m used to downloading every episode of a Tall Tale game on one go and playing the whole thing not downloading parts and happen to wait. I downloaded Walking Dead eps 1 & 2 but I haven’t played them because I want to wait for the rest of the episodes that will probably be free for PS+

It’s amazing to See Legends of Dragoon being the number 1 PS1 Classic I still have my 4 Disc copy.

For Metal Gear HD collection I think we should get Peace Maker for the Vita so when we buy the HD collection via the store it’ll count for both PS3 and Vita

  • Very amazing to see Legend of Dragoon be on the top of the PSone classic list. To me that game means a lot. It’s the game that really got me into Sony games and all. It’s also my fav. game ever! :)

  • I’m sorry it’s Baldur’s gate not Baldar’s.

  • Also Morgan I wouldn’t mind seeing Kingdom Hearts as well.

  • Seeing Legend of Dragoon at the #1 spot makes me really happy. I hope Dart or Rose makes an appearance on PS Allstars.

  • I really want to know how much Square-Enix earned money from Final Fantasy PSOne Classics.

they should put FFXII on PS2 Classics already. and FFX-2 if they have no plan to remaster it.

  • I don’t understand how Final Fantasy 7 could still be in the top 5 after all this time, and month after month. It seems like everyone who would want that game (FF fans are die-hards) would have it already…

Morgan, is it really still selling this well? Is there any information you could possibly share with us to shed a little light on how the entire process of compiling this list works? Is it really based only on complete, paid transactions and the subsequent original download?

  • I downloaded both the first episode and second episode of the walking dead, but it won’t let me play the second episode. To my knowledge everything is patched up. What can I do to fix this? I played the first episode, but now, even though the download content screen says I have the second episode installed, but I can’t seem to access it. It doesn’t show up as a separate title, and it won’t let me access it from the download content screen in the plainly titled The Walking Dead.

  • it works, finally, yay

  • Hey game maker dudes!! It seems a little odd that Sony doesn’t pay close attention to there top download lists. If so then they should notice that popularity sells. I personally would love to see characters from the top 5 PSone classic games(LOD,FF7-9, Crash) on the new upcoming title Playstation All-Stars game!! To me those appear to be all-stars….!!
