Until Dawn: New PS Move Horror Game Announced for PS3

Hi, my name is Will Byles and I’m the Executive Creative Director for Until Dawn over at Supermassive Games. We’re very excited to finally lift the lid on Until Dawn, our new PlayStation 3 title, developed exclusively for PlayStation Move!

So, what did you think? We’ve been working on this game for a while now, working with Hollywood writers and US TV talent, doing our best to bring the a new horror experience to the PlayStation Move. Inspired by classic movies like Friday the 13th, Halloween, and SCREAM, we expect that Until Dawn will draw you in with its characters, chilling setting and shocking, twisted story.

On the anniversary of their friends’ disappearance, a group of classmates visit the site of the mystery to bury their ghosts and get some closure. Little do they know, they’ll end up burying each other instead…

Just like in classic horror films it’s isolated, the power’s out and the phones don’t work! You’ll play through the story as multiple characters, sometimes with a friend and sometimes on your own to discover who it is that’s intent on killing off you and your friends. It’s up to you how you play, so we don’t know how your story will go or who’ll be there with you at the end.

To play the game you’ll use the PS Move controller in a totally natural way. It’ll act as your flashlight, guiding your way through the darkness, or when you want to use something the controller will intuitively map your actions in the real world to those of your character’s hand in the game world.

We really hope you’re as psyched about Until Dawn as we are, coming next year exclusively to PlayStation 3. Get ready to be scared.

  • Scarecrow reminds me of a goosebumps episode… i like it .

  • a new horror game and Move game? awesome. 2 birds? Meet stone. Move is a great motion gaming tool. I really wish the PS community would show more love and support to all of SONYs high quality products. XBOX isnt beating SONY…….the PS community and lack of support to SONY is whats beating us.

  • Until Dawn looked great and having Move functionality will draw gamers into the narrative even further. This game will be on my radar as the writing looked like a Movie, just hope the Move controls are really good. Can’t wait for more info.

    Sold.

  • Game looked awesome! I hope it’s a true survival horror game or a new type of survivor horror as long as it’s awesome! It better not be on rails! Is it on rails? And this game seems a like a perfect co-op game! Of course make it offline and online, but if you can only choose one make it offline!

Also, this game reminds me of Siren: Blood Curse except that it’s in third person. A Move patch for that game seems like it would be perfect. Definitely one of my favorite games ever and one of the only, if not, the only true survivor horror game this gen. Highly recommend it!

  • “we expect that Until Dawn will draw you in with its characters”

If I’m ever drawn into this game it will definitely NOT be because of its characters. And I hope the killer isn’t the “dead” friend.

  • I like what i see and read so…DAY 1 purchase from me. I’m hoping for a replayable game with multiple endings. I’m still waiting for SONY to patch SIREN with trophies and Move support too. 8)

  • @56

You great grandchildren probably won’t be able to play Siren with trophies and move support.

  • Looks good and I would buy it until I saw this:

    “developed exclusively for PlayStation Move”

You guys dont want sell this game, right?

It is really impossible to make a Move game that also can be played with the excellent Dual Shock/Sixaxis?

    @52

Nah… what is beating Sony has a name, and it is Vita.

Also they could work on games that created they’re fanbase, like: The Legend of Dragoon, Legend of Legaia, Ghost Hunter, Rogue Galaxy, Dark Cloud, Omega Boost, Alundra, Demon’s Souls, Syphon Filter, Siren, Destruction Derby and others…

  • Just gonna agree with what has already been said, that I also love the campy horror movie concept too. Been waiting to use my PS Move controller for a while. I have it for socom 4 / killzone 3 / resistance 3 / heavy rain as well but haven’t had a full playthrough of it with any game yet, this will be the 1st since it’s made for it! :) Remember seeing leaked screens of this game.. using a flashlight with the MOVE… I hope the move will be used well in many different ways in this game, and I hope the game is not too short!!! Looks good.

  • I like the whole flash light thing with realtime light and shadows that you control with the move. You can really make some creepy gameplay on that alone. I’m hearing ‘Cabin in the woods’ style movie from people but really That movie is made to be like other horror movies. The whole cabin in the woods thing started with Evil Dead.

  • any word on price? or release date please?need to know!

  • The controls will looks like Heavy Rain?

  • They wouldn’t be in this situation if they had just taken the time to stop at S-Mart on the way up. ;)
Is it just me or did the intro seem to have a Sam Raimi & Bruce Campbell vibe all over it?
If so than “Come get some!”
    Shop smart, shop S-Mart!

  • Hi Will, this looks bloody awesome. Might even sell me a move.

  • It’s about time the Move got a fully featured adventure exclusive. Lots of games have support for it, but rarely do they actually implement it well because–to be honest–it’s only been a secondary option for core games and a gimmicky peripheral for rail shooters.

I sincerely hope your team at Supermassive Games is able to execute this well by making it an engaging Move experience, Will. The premise looks very promising, and this trailer has certainly pulled me in. I’d really like to see more gameplay though; please look into a pure gameplay trailer sporting the varied situations we may encounter throughout. Of course this goes without saying, but if you do another trailer try to avoid any major plot spoilers (I know some people like to know what’s coming, but that takes away half the fun for me–particularly with horror).

Anyhow, best of luck to you and your team on your new project.

  • This is what tlaking about . just make it hard, and make it a thinker with great story and conciques for your actions & you’ll see success.

This is what ps move needs and horror genre overall needs so badly.. Thank you

  • this looks good but the only thing that is bothering is the female actress voice, it sounds annoying? I love horror games like Silent Hill and Alan Wake so this will be on my radar. I just think the female voice needs changing.

out of curiousity, do you even have a Vita? Because i do, and i can tell you it is an excellent gaming system. Well worth the $250. This is exactly what im talking about. People are quick to complain “Move sucks” and “Vita sucks” without explaining why they suck. The 2 most common excuses are “too expensive” and “no games”. I can understand if the price tag is too high for certain consumers. Thats fine, just dont buy it. But dont come back and bash SONY for it like its SONY’s fault. You cant expect to buy a lamborghini at the price of a Nissan or Ford.

As far as the “no games” excuse…..this is the one that does annoy me however. I personally have enjoyed playing many games with the Move and on the Vita. People complain about no games, but when SONY drops solid quality games…no one buys them. Im not saying all games appeal to all gamers, but with a solid selection of games to choose from, i dont understand how people cant find any games to interest them.

Until Dawn is a perfect example of a solid looking game that people are not going play becasue its a Move game and than complain afterward that “Move has no games”. All im saying is its time to stop with the excuses and support our gaming systems.

  • Would it really kill you guys to try to make Dualshock controls for this game? Sorry, but I didn’t buy a PS3 for motion controls. If I wanted motion gaming, I would’ve bought a Wii. The game looks great, I’ll give you that. Being a college student, I have enough garbage to buy…. And yes, I do have a job!

Still looking towards The Last of Us while hoping that you’ll try to work some Dualshock controls in on this game.

  • @58: The vast majority of those are niche and would not be huge sellers to the masses, which is why they aren’t made.

There’s nothing I want more than a Wild Arms 6, but I realize it’s not a huge franchise for PlayStation no matter how much I love it.

Take off your fanboy goggles and look at reality. Those games aren’t Call of Duty in popularity and never will be. So don’t act like it’s insanity for them to not be continued on. It sucks for sure, but it makes sense from a business standpoint.

@68: That’s how it will always be. People still whine about PS3 exclusives, but in the same comment will say how it’s not worth buying it. I mean… it’s really hilarious when it’s a JRPG, because the PS3 has tons of them and is actually getting more. (go figure, a Japanese system, getting Japanese games… who would have thought)

  • A first party horror game, never thought I’d see that. Since it is first party, I hope it has the polish.

  • @70
your absolutely right. thats the problem with PS gamers, they’re never satisfied and will always complain about something. Its all the excuses that bother me. When i hear people say “oh its for Move? nevermind” it makes me wonder would those people have bought the game if it was a dualshock? Becasue SONY has dropped many great Dualshock games and yet sales of these great games have been lower than what the game deserves. Resistance 3, Infamous 2, Starhawk these are all great “dualshock” games. So im still asking where is the support? I gave up on COD for that same exact reason. Why continue to support a company that treats us like 2nd class citizens when we have great publishers developing amazing games specifically for us and we turn our backs on them in support of Activision. Its not like COD is the ONLY AAA shooter franchise on the market. All im saying is that we as a PS community should be spreading the love and supporting our system more.

  • @68 @70 @72

Not yet… I just think that the Vita was released too soon…

However I will be getting one on the release of Souls Sacrifice, because this is the type of game I want on my portable, It’s just the same way that it happened with PSP, I’ve bought one for Monster Hunter, Dissidia, 3rd Birthday and Valkyria Chronicles 2.

Those are my type of games.

    Nonetheless:

The Legend of Dragoon sold 1.86 million of copys.

    Demon’s Souls sold 1.63 millions.

    Syphon Filter sold 2.88 millions.

If those numbers are not enough… I don’t know why games like Motorstorm get sequels…

Anyway back on the Move thing… I just rather play those kind of games on the Dual Shock… and the experience that Sony had with Sorcery… should had proved that most of the gamers also want that…

And finaly… this game looks excellent I will probably buy him… because I have a Move… but if it was playable with the Dual Shock I would definately buy him… and that’s it.

PS: I have almost all PS3 exclusive games…. 130 games for the PS3 bought new and in the same year of the releases… just two Call of Duty’s (Blops and MW2).. yeah I like Sony games and I buy Sony products.. so Sony has my support.

  • Looks pretty cool! The only thing I’m worried about is replay value. I’ll beat it once depending how long it takes to beat it, then remember exactly how the game plays out and it won’t be “scary” anymore. Unless it has multiple endings for each character randomated stuff etc?

  • Reminds me of the original Evil Dead movie.

    Sign me up.

  • Hi Will, congrates on this very anticipated title! Can you comment on the replayability? Is there a “new game +” mode or several difficulty settings? Also, any chance of subtitle support? Thanks!

  • @39 I’m a a wizard Elvick*best hagrid voice*

  • I was so completely excited for this game until I saw that the gameplay is in first person mode. I thought third person was the future in gaming, and am noticing more games are stepping back in time to the first person style that only the pc was capable of in the early nineties. I can’t comprehend how people love this style of gameplay, but each to their own. I am just hoping the people who make these games would consider us third person gamers as well. To make everyone happy, you should give people a choice for which style they want to play, until then, it looks like I will keep saving my money. Thanks

  • Please make sure this isn’t for “Move Only”. I guarantee you’ll sell a lot more copies if you make it for DualShock. PS fans have been waiting for an “Alan Wake Type” game for awhile now. I know I have!

  • Is that game for the ps vita also? it will be cool if it is !!! nicetho :)
