Remote Play Brings God of War, Ico and Shadow of the Colossus Collections to PS Vita Today

PS Vita Remote Play - God of War CollectionPS Vita Remote Play - Ico and Shadow of the Colossus Collection

We’ve got some great news for PS Vita owners today concerning Remote Play, the application that enables you to interact remotely with PS3 using your PS Vita and a Wi-Fi connection. Starting today, PS3 owners will be able to download an update for God of War Collection and Ico and Shadow of the Colossus Collection that will enable these classic games to be played from their PS Vita using the Remote Play function.

So what does this mean? It means you’ll be able to enjoy two classic HD collections almost anywhere, whether you’re around your PS3 or not, from the comfort of your PS Vita and a Wi-Fi signal. Both collections include customizable control options, so you can choose to have the R2 and L2 buttons from your PS3 mapped to PS Vita’s rear touchpad. This is great news because God of War, God of War II, Ico, and Shadow of the Colossus represent some of the most beloved and acclaimed titles in videogaming — and both collections look stunning on PS Vita’s brilliant 5” OLED screen.

To access the Remote Play functionality for both God of War Collection and ICO and Shadow of the Colossus Collection, you’ll need to download patches for each game on your PS3, at no extra cost. Once you download each patch and try out Remote Play for yourself on PS Vita, be sure to let us know what you think!

In addition to playing selected games remotely, the Remote Play feature enables you to access music, videos, and photos stored on your PS3 through your PS Vita. For instructions on how to set up your PS3 and PS Vita for Remote Play please visit our guide here.

  • Glad they’ve started giving remote play a little love, this a feature many people, including myself, are interested in. Keep pushing support for this on more games and you’ll have a lot more Vita owners and a lot happier customers.

  • What About LBP2?

  • This is freeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeekinnnnnnn aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaawwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssome, There needs to be much more of this asap!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

  • @95, Ryan1701e: Funniest post of the day! Teasing your kids is one of the rewards of fatherhood.

    Nice Star Trek reference, BTW.

  • Am i missing something _ does ps3 have to be on and the game in for this to work? That is not very convenient

  • Well from what I understand the point of remote play is to have the ps3 on with the game in so you can use the Vita to connect to it. The PS3 runs it, the Vita controls it. Vita sends controls signals one way, ps3 runs the game and sends visuals back the other.

    I think.

  • Let me start by saying that this is awesome. For me remote play was one of the main reason I bought a Vita. This morning I played a bit of GOW2 and I have to say that I was very happy with the experience. However, Sony really needs to expand this functionality to a minimum of all of the PS3 games produced by their stiudios.

The way I see it, Sony promised remote play functionality when they debuted the Vita and then released the Vita with lackluster support for it. Their excuse was “The producer of the game has to add Remote Play functionality to their game in order for it to work.” Well, Sony, no one has been fooled. You are a game producer with a lot of games that do not support it. How do you expect other games companies to support your product if you don’t?

Get to work. Four games is a nice start, but to be honest, this support should have been there from Day 1.

  • Doesn’t Shadow of the Colossus rely on the DualShock’s rumble to help point you towards the next colossus? How will this work when playing through a Vita?

  • JohnnyDubs nailed it.

Very thankful this has (finally) started to actually happen- but Sony, you need to lead by example- and should have from day one.
Now…back in your cages and get me my InFamous remote play!

  • …and Uncharted 1-3.

  • Johnny dubs I agree with you totally

  • This is a good thing. I am one step closer to buying a Vita.
Now drop the memory price by 50% and add Rock Band Blitz and support for PSP Neo-Geo Station games (That we already bought) and you have yourself another Vita sold! :)

  • This is great and all but I feel like time could be better spent on something like PSP compatibility. Portable Ops and Peace Walker maybe?

  • Its 9 o clock in texas where i am and wheres the patch for Ico\shadow. But anyways this is great shadow of the collosus was the first game i tried to use remote play with. So thqnks for the hard work Sony hope you can bring more games out with remlte play. p.S LBP2 is cross controler not remote play.

  • Patch is valid for God of War Saga Collection too?!

  • Just played about an hour of the first GoW and everything worked really well! I picked up both GoW and Ico/SotC today just because of this. Add more games and you’ll definitely get more PS3 game sales from me!

Side note – the screen image doesn’t fill the full Vita frame, but in GoW, if you hit select and options, there is an option in there to make it a little bigger (fullscreen yes)

Thanks Sony, please work on more compatible titles.

  • This is great, I hope to see this applied to even more games !

  • What needs to happen is the ability to play any of our games on our PlayStation Vita anywhere, without the need of our PS3 being on, without any device needed to be connected to the internet and without the game disc having to be in the PS3. Exactly how Sony advertised it would be, start a game on your PS3, pause the game and with a press of the PS button continue it on your PSVita.

It doesn’t matter how it happens, wether with Remote Play, buy once play anywhere (Cross Buy), a program where you take your games and you receive a PSVita download code, it doesn´t matter as long as the above is true and we can turn off our PS3’s, continue playing the same game on the PS3 on a different save file or username, play other games, watch movies, do anything else we want and continue our saves (Cross Save)

That’s what needs to happen and if this happens EVERYONE will buy a PS3 and PSVita including me, until that happens I will not buy a PSVita.

What also needs to happen is getting a digital copy of our movies to be able to play on our PSVita´s, a dedicated app store and make the PSVita into a game console/tablet hybrid. You need this! Sony you will DOMINATE!

  • UPDATE IS UP TO SHADOW ICO COLLECTION !!!

  • WOW IT RUNS DAMN SMOOTH,, IM REALLY IMPRESS !! WAY BETTER THAN IT USED TO BE,, IT LOOKS LIKE A NATIVE VITA GAME !! WOW !!

  • How it should also be, is giving us a digital version of our UMD games and videos. It’s also pro consumer and gives you a good name and a good reputation. So much more people would buy a PSVita if this happens.

  • @111, when laying SOTC, you do not need rumble. You can just point your sword towards the sky and the sunlight reflecting off of your sword will guide you to the next Colosses,.

  • sorry that was @113

  • @123, cross play and Remote play are 2 different things. Remote play is something that was implimented way back with the psp1000/2000/3000 and I used it on my PspGo also. Lair & Bionic Comando was some of the 1st games that did remote play. Cross play can only work if there is a Vita version and Ps3 version of the same game. and as you can see, most ps3 games do not have Vita versions. The ones that do, ( AC/ MLB/NBA/Pinball/R&C) all have cross play implemented. So untill you see all games being made with ps3 & Vita copies, you will not get cross play.

  • Wow out if nowhere… How awesome!!!

    Thanks Sony.:)

Hope we get more game with remote play soon

    please please please godhand, ufc3, yakuza4, killzone3, next…

  • Great, hopefully the list of games with Remote Play support keeps growing!! However, please do finish what you start before going over to other things such as Full PSP games and PSP DLC support for PS Vita which has not been completed yet.

  • It really didn’t work for me… The game’s response to my controls are lagged to the point of being unplayable! I’m talking 5-10 seconds delay! And i’m not even on wifi! Don’t know if that’s happening to everyone else but if it is, I believe this to be quite a disapointment. The thing was supposed to be working since day one and, when it finally comes, it works with only four games and it doesn’t function as it should… Bad move SONY, I’d be less disapointed with the way things were before this…

  • No way! That is awesome news! I already finished those games a few weeks ago though I always keep my games lol, ima going to try it right now! :D

  • Well Sony, you know what must be done — Remote Play integrated directly into the PlayStation 4’s OS.

    Every game. Every app. Everywhere.

  • Ok, I’m up late trying out remote play. Yes, SoTC, which I have digitally, works. I didn’t play it because I wanted to try out other things. You can access the store & it’s the real store, not the Vita store. I browsed, then downloaded a trailer. You can watch your stored videos using remote.

This means you can get things from the store when you’re away from home, if you have a Vita. I haven’t tried to download a game but I think it’s possible. You can start your downloading on store update days while you’re still @ work or school & it will all be there waiting for you. You can shop the store when you’re out of town. That’s one of the things I miss most while traveling (& during the Great Outage of 2011) is browsing the store almost daily. This is freakin’ awesome!

Oh, & just like with the PSP, you can play PS1 games using remote play.

  • I really wish they had more foresight with Remote Play, it should be an OS feature. Not a game feature. Hopefully the PS Vita and PS4 can fix that and every game – with no extra development by developers – can just work from the start.

  • Why can’t that be the case for all games?
You don’t need a patch to male them work, a hacker was able to play battlefield 3 on the Vita.
You should hire him, like every other normal companies do, even the government.

Most people would want to play online games like Killzome 3, Starhawk, Battlefield 3 and MAG.
    I don’t really want to play PS2 games…

    In any case…

    All I want to say.

Thank You Sony for the 1.80 Update of the Vita, it’s an incredible update.

You can get access to ALL PS1 Classic by installing them from your PS3 directly.
(Just download the game, before it gets installed, and install it on your Vita wih Content Manager)

The update is amazing, allowing the Cross-Controller for the Vita itself.
Other great improvements came with the update

Nice update with Playlists and iTunes playback.

Now all we need is to wait until we get cross controller games.

  • Bring a hockey game to the Vita!!!!!!!!!!!!! I don’t care if it’s “Hit the Ice”………….Anything

  • We’ll be better off when they release Gaikai on PS Vita, PS3 and PS4.
I would be Cloud based gaming, no need of using twice your bandwidth, for people with caps (not me).
You use it once on your 3G or the Wi-fi and again at your home.

So, playing PS4 games on Clouds with my Vita is something I can imagine doing.

Buy the cloud based version, get the download version for PS4 for free, and vice versa.

  • I have been waiting for these features for a min since I got my vita I am real happy for the new add stuff we are getting on the vita. Keep up the good work Sony add cool things that I will use on the daily. now my wife can watch while I play my ps3 on my vita screen Wooooooooooo!!!

  • Wow, I tried GoW2 and SotC last night and I can’t believe how smoothly they ran. I’m very impressed – hope to see more games get patched, because this really adds a great feature to the Vita. I’ve used remote play before, but I didn’t think PS3 games could run so well on it.

@132-did you try remote play using wifi instead of the PS3 local network? I usually find that it works better. It will depend on the speed of the wifi connection you have though.

@135-remote play has always worked for accessing the XMB on the PS3 – this even worked on the PSP. Yes, you can definitely purchase stuff on the PS Store and start them downloading from remote play so they are ready when you get home. Just make sure your PS3 is setting to allow remote start so you can turn it on over the internet. It also works great for watching videos on your PS3’s hard drive, using the PS3’s web browser, checking your friends list and sending messages. You can do that on Vita of course, but it was cool to be able to do it from the PSP before the Vita came out.

I really like this feature and I hope for more great games! It would be great to see how an online multiplayer game does. Maybe Gaikai will help this?

  • This is just AMAZING, Sony, AMAZING! Thanks for this. Hope to see the Remote Play library growing fast. Regards.

  • Got the patch and played through a lil bit of ICO and it plays beautifully… only if it lags look-wise…

Also for an 8MB patch the change is fantastic and I am curious if doing this is soo easy and smooth why dont other publishers follow suit… Atleast Sony must incorporate Remote Play in its first party franchises like Uncharted, heavy rain, infamous etc…

  • Could be possible to use the vita as a standard extra controller in all ps3 games in your console? The only prob I see for that is R2 L2 mapping but with the rear touchpad and should buttons conbination that couldn’t be much of a problem, well I think. The vita have more capabilities than a sixaxis controller so I think that coul be not much of a difficul request.

  • Awesome. My wife is a big God of War fan so being able to play on the vita wherever is nice.

  • Hey guys,

I have a digital copy of SoTC and I was trying all last night to update and it wouldn’t so, I waited till this morning and still no patch… I have seen some of you post that the update is live for you though. Maybe it has only been released for the Disc copies? Please, anyone who has a digital copy let me know if you were able to update and if so, how?

    Thank you,

  • i played ico… or rather tried to play for about 30 seconds. the lag is bad. i won’t be playing it anytime soon unless sony fixes the issues. private network is suppose to be far better than regular network if you got a slow connection, but it’s still terrible. i don’t understand why they don’t just make ps2 and psn download games playable on the vita. this remote play thing is useless if it doesn’t work right.

  • Tried this late last night with ICO/SOTC HD with a private network and it worked great. The quality was surprisingly good as I’m used to alot of artifacting with remote play (ex. PSOne classics through remote play). I’m not quite sure (and I’m quite tech savy) why the title needs a 8mb patch to accomplish this.

Now, having said all this, I completely agree with #112. This is a VERY GOOD feature and should have been there from day one. At this point we should have AT LEAST all first party studio titles supporting this. The patching to make this work is unfortunate as it is most likely not going to be applied to aged gems. I love the idea of being able to remotely play Resonance of Fate or Fallout New Vegas.

Please make this happen Sony. I know there is alot of hurdles with this, like licensing and the like. But sometimes I think you have the potential of holding a winning hand, but you decide to fold.

  • We already know a hacked Vita can play PS2 and PS3 games. Why don’t you stop trying to distract us from that and make it work for the rest of us. We know the Vita can handle it, so stop pretending it doesn’t. Remote play is pointless since it screw everything up when you lose connection for a second–and then you can’t re-connnect at all. I know that SCEA has no control over this, but if you want people to stop hacking, allow a system to do what it can do. Took years hacking for you to allow PS1 classics on the PSP when they worked day 1. Give us PS2, and PS3 playability already SCE.

  • @146 I have digital SoTC and the update was available late last night, so it’s not only disc versions, not sure why it’s not working for you.

Also I do have to say the lag does seem a bit bad, sometimes it even becomes a slideshow from just a room or two away, unless I’m on local in the same room as the system it isn’t very stable.

@149 From what I’ve seen the hacked remote play tends to have even more delay than this even so… yeah. I would love to see more/better support for remote play though. There’s no reason the Vita shouldn’t have MUCH better Remote Play support than the PSP. I was under the impression that this was something that would be pushed out quickly (especially first-party titles), as the hardware should be in order for it. Not to mention many people did see the Killzone 3 Remote Play demonstration which seemed much more responsive than anything so far. PS2 classics don’t seem unreasonable to be played on the Vita’s native hardware or at least Remote Play though. I hope they actually work on getting that running quickly.
