PlayStation Plus on PS Vita Gets Timing, Set to Launch with Instant Game Collection

Brandon Stander's Avatar + Posted by Brandon Stander on Sep 18, 2012 // Director of Marketing, PlayStation Network

We announced back at Gamescom that PlayStation Plus would be coming to PlayStation Vita (PS Vita), and today we’re pleased to announce that our premium game membership will make its debut on PS Vita in November, providing an Instant Game Collection to PS Vita owners along with the same features that many of you already enjoy for PlayStation 3 (PS3).

If you’re already a PlayStation Plus member on PS3, you’re in luck—you will automatically be able to also enjoy all the PlayStation Plus features for your PS Vita at no extra cost.

PlayStation Plus features for PS Vita available in November will include:

  • Instant Game Collection: Unlimited access to a regularly refreshed selection of the full versions of games as long as your membership is active.
  • Discounts: Take advantage of exclusive discounts on games and DLC for your PS Vita.
  • Online Game Storage: An additional 1GB of online storage for game saves for PS Vita games and downloaded content.
  • Automatic Updates: PS Vita will automatically start up at a designated time to download and install select game demos and game updates as well as system software updates and start standby mode upon completion.
  • Automatic Trophy sync: Trophy information will be synched to PSN servers automatically via the PS Vita.

If you don’t yet own a PS Vita, there has never been a better time to invest in the most powerful portable entertainment system. In addition to the Instant Game Collection you will be able to tap into through PlayStation Plus, PS Vita also has an arsenal of great and innovative games, like the recent hit Sound Shapes, not to mention some of the hottest upcoming titles like Assassin’s Creed III: Liberation, Call of Duty: Black Ops: Declassified and LittleBigPlanet PS Vita.

So tell us–What PlayStation Plus feature are you most looking forward to taking advantage of on your PS Vita?

Depending on what’s in the instant game collection, I’ll probably get PS+ first day for the Vita. :D

Can’t wait til november to find out that all the games i currently own are included in the instant game collection…
I hope that we can choose what to get from a list of games, and not arbitrarily assigned by Sony…

To manage expectations, it will likely be the same format of the current Plus, which is the content is approved and selected by our teams here. Having an ‘a la carte’ option, isn’t something we can do at this time.

Great, one subscription for all platforms is exactly how it should be, great job on that. It’s about time though, it should have been there from day one.

Having said that, PlayStation Plus should be how it was said to be since it’s announcement, and it should stay that way,

free content (games, avatars, etc), discounted games and early access to content (demos, betas, etc).

Online game save storage, automatic updates and automatic trophy syncing should be free to all PlayStation owners. Stop being greedy, anti consumer and start being fair and pro consumer if you want the name Sony and PlayStation to be known in a better way by consumers and want more people to purchase your prodcuts.

I just read that in the Land of the Rising Sun Hot Shots Golf: World Invitational won’t be “Cross Buy,” purchase once, play anywhere, like it should be and how is the standard.

Why do you think the Fruit company sells so much and why you are in the current situation you are in? You make pretty good hardware but make terrible business decisions that cripple it.

I’ve been looking into PS+ membership and it looks like a great deal. As for the Instant Game collection on the Vita, I’m sure it will be PSP and PSOne games, as there isn’t a lot of content on the Vita just yet. But who knows? I just hope that they drop the price on the memory cards soon, because I’m going to need a new one for my Vita come November, lol.

The 12GB PlayStation 3 should also release outside of Europe with a lower price point. That’s the perfect SKU for casuals, kids, etc. Would have been perfect for an Wonderbook bundle. No casual wants or needs a 250 or 500GB PlayStation 3, except for the casuals who will use their PlayStation for things other than games that use HDD space, but only some casuals would.
A lower priced PlayStation 3 and Vita would be great for you. $150/$200 PlayStation 3 nexts to a $300 Wii U looks way better especially if the PS3 has more storage space and some extras. No wonder you are in the situation you are in Sony.

The 250GB PlayStation 3 SKU is $250, so how is it that the Uncharted 3 bundle is $270 when UC3 GotY costs $40 and the Dust 514 content is $30, and all previous PS3 bundles with games that were $60 were the same price as a regular PS3.

You keep falling lower and lower Sony.

It could have been my mistake, but I was under the impression that the PS Vita inclusion in the PS+ subscription will commence this month, so when I read ‘November’, I was ready to complain. But then I wasn’t expecting much but some discounts from PS+ for PS Vita.

So when I read there will be an Instant Game Collection akin to the PS3, my fire just melted away. And to think that it comes with my current Plus subscription, I just want to thank Sony for a job well done, that they always listen to the customer, and I love them so very much!

I’m just wondering how many games are gonna be in the IGC. The PS3 has 12, but that seems too many for the library the Vita has currently. I would love it if they could match it, but if not I’m wondering how many they’ll go with.

Question: Can I still access/download the instant game collection for the Vita through my PS3 PS+ account and save it until I get a Vita or do I have to buy a Vita first and register it?

Hey Brandon,

Not sure if you’re the right person to ask, but any news as to when/if more PSP compatibility will be added to the Vita? The two games I want most to play (Wipeout Pure, Metal Gear Solid Portable Ops) cannot be downloaded or transferred onto the Vita in North America (though these games are available for transfer in Europe).

Any news about the future possibility of compatibility for these games, or just more PSP games in general, would be greatly appreciated. Thanks a lot!

First of all, I’m gonna need a bigger memory card now for that instant game collection.
Second, it would be awesome if game saves for psone classics, minis, and other cross compatible games were automatically synced between the ps3 and vita during the auto update session. You wouldnt even have to think, just pick up whichever device and start playing your game from where you left off. Already submitted to blog.share!

Now we just need more flash memory. It really sucks we are limited to 32GB. For a system like this, 100GB would work for most people, I would prefer 250GB.

My list of things that I want on my Vita/Plus subscription.
(1) Cross game Buy on all 1st party sony titles.
(2) Ps2 classics added to Vita.
(3) Digital Versions of all Retail Vita games on day 1.
(4) Better oricing on Vita games. ( $15-$25 price point would be perfect ).
Great job so far sony, just keep the New Vita games coming and all will be well. As always, Keep on Gaming.

thanks for the good news Sony – great way to start the day ! as to the IGC, possibly allowing users to choose a game of their choice for DL would be a good way to go …. I’ve had my Vita since launch week & already own 8 retail games & several DL games for it …. so will be difficult to ensure that all users can benefit from the free games …. I would like to see discounts on add on content. pleased with the cloud save back ups – thanks.

I have a question in relation to LBP V online play – I could hear a fellow talking to me in my pod – can you always be heard while playing online ? how does this actually work ? when playing on the PS3, you had to have a headset & turn the mic on, on the Vita, I’m not sure how this feature works …. I had been talking to my son while playing & now have no idea if the fellow heard us …. can you explain this feature ? thanks. LOVE LBP V. very cool that there are already 100s of community levels ….. I’m crossing my fingers for future levels pack DLC for the Vita version …. I bought all the level packs for the PS3 versions & they added a lot to the experience ….

Thanks again ! :-)
