TGS 2012: Smaller, Lighter PS3 Model Unveiled

Tokyo Game Show is always an exciting time for gamers everywhere, as we all look forward to new games and other news being unveiled during the show. This year is no exception. We are always looking for ways to create better experiences for our gamers, and to that end, we just unveiled a smaller, lighter PlayStation 3 at the show.

PlayStation 3

The new PS3 will be available in two different models, with 250GB and 500GB HDDs which will allow you to store even more of your digital life. It also features a smaller, streamlined design that will look great as part of any entertainment system. The new model is approximately 25% smaller and 20% lighter than the current PS3.

In order to maintain the superior gaming experiences that you expect from us here at PlayStation, we are always looking for ways to change and evolve with your gaming behavior. You might remember the smaller models that we launched for PlayStation 2 and PSP (PlayStation Portable), and we know that many of you love the opportunity to add these streamlined models to your home. Additionally, as developers continue to release deep and rich digital gaming content, providing an option for larger HDD is essential, especially for games with large DLC packs, and full game downloads, as well as personal entertainment content. The biggest and best games live on PS3 this holiday season, and the new PS3 is the perfect way to play.

We are also excited to announce that the launch of this new PS3 model will include incredible additional value. The 250GB PS3 will be available on September 25th for $269.99 (MSRP) as part of a limited edition bundle featuring UNCHARTED 3: Drake’s Deception: Game of the Year Edition and a voucher for more than $30 worth of bonus digital content for the highly acclaimed digital title, DUST 514. This bundle offers more than $70 in total combined value.

New PlayStation 3 Bundle

The winner of over 60 industry and Game of the Year awards, UNCHARTED 3: Drake’s Deception will be re-released next week in an all new Game of the Year Edition, which includes 12 new multiplayer maps, over 40 multiplayer skins, Fort Co-Op Adventure, and Shade Survival Mode, a value of over $45 in bonus content. In case you somehow missed it, UNCHARTED 3: Drake’s Deception is the latest installment in Naughty Dog’s storied UNCHARTED franchise that chronicles the adventures of Nathan Drake. UNCHARTED 3: Drake’s Deception Game of the Year Edition is a great way to kick off your gameplay experience on the newest PS3 model.

UNCHARTED 3: Drake’s Deception Game of the Year Edition will also be available as a standalone title on September 25th for $39.99 (MSRP).

CCP Games’ DUST 514 brings intense infantry combat, large-scale warfare and deep character advancement to PS3 in an exclusive free-to-play massively multiplayer shooter. Set in, and integrated with, the massive universe of EVE Online, players wage war in the next generation of first-person shooters, where a single victory could prove the crushing blow to a galactic empire of thousands of online gamers. This bundle includes an incredible amount of bonus value – more than $30 in total.

For those of you who do not own a PS3 yet, or have been looking to add another PS3 to your household, this is the perfect opportunity to jump in before the next wave of blockbuster games launch this holiday season.

PlayStation 3

The new 500GB PS3 will be available in a limited edition bundle on October 30th in conjunction with the release of Assassin’s Creed III – one of the most anticipated games for this holiday season featuring four exclusive levels, only available on PS3.

  • I just upgraded my PS3. i’ll wait for next gen console (PS4)

  • Sony wants to sell more? With a finished product and worsened with higher price? They should fire whoever makes the sales strategies of the company.
I’ll say it again. Selling the 12GB version without play-along like any basic package should be – at a price of $ 199. Gets the hint.

  • New smaller console means next gen is just around the corner I would buy this if it was just the ps3 without the bundles and a lower price of course otherwise there is no need to buy another one.

  • A PS3 Slim Slim?

  • I’ll buy this when I can get the cheapest version without any extra stuff thrown in. I’d just be replacing my PS3 with this one. I personally think it looks fantastic. But I’ve got a nearly full 640GB HDD in my current system, so I don’t need a large HDD in a new PS3. If you released the 12GB SKU, I’d totally buy it and swap my current HDD into it.
Guess I’ll be waiting until the bundles go away after the holidays.

  • Looks quite nice but what did $ony remove this time??

PS3 (older phats) and slim – PS2 compatibility gone, you should put it back in this model so we can play some decent JRPG games as this Gen’s suck!
PS3 all models – Other OS gone

What is it this time, the ability to play DVD’s so we are all forced to buy Blu Ray films to support Sony’s propriotory HD format?

At least a price hike will help Xbox and Nintendo Wii U out so its all good, and thanks for another Vita firmware downgrade 1.81 sucks!!

  • I was really hoping for a better looking new slim model, with some of the features of the original launch model put back, I would REALLY like to get a proper replacement of my original “20GB” (160GB) PS3. Instead this new slim is if possible even uglier than the first slim, and still only has 2 usb ports and no PS2 compatibility, when my 5+ year old PS3 has 4 usb ports and hardware PS2 backwards compatibility…

What kind of idiotic product development is Sony employing when you need to significantly DOWNGRADE when replacing a 5+ year old console with a new one??

    Simply Mindboggling!

  • So no $199 Model then??? :-/ Oh well, well done Microsoft for winning Xmas :-/

  • The title for this blog page should be:
“Smaller, Lighter, Fuglier PS3 Model Unveiled”

Sorry, but the photos shown of this new model can hardly be called product “beauty shots”. Talk about taking the PS3’s gorgeous console design, then beating it repeatedly into the dirt with an ugly stick. Franky, it looks like some horribly-cheap Fisher Price™ Game Console for Toddlers idea (only without the bright blue plastic)… or perhaps a rejected console case design from 1978 (only without the faux wood stickers yet applied).

Personally, I feel the final revisions for the PSX & PS2 consoles are remarkable designs considering their super-small form factors. Although the PS2 Slim has a simplified flip-up cover, it doesn’t sacrifice its usability or visual style.

I can’t understand how anyone could find the PS3 Ultra-Slim’s awful grooved sliding lid design — essentially a built-in dust collection system — preferable in any way to the already-proven PS2 Slim design. Or why anyone would even consider buying this model over the already-existing superior PS3 Slim.

I expected far more from your design team, Sony…

  • Good job on the re-design. Don’t listen to the spoiled children all over the internet. Only the positive comments are relavent. Slot loading is better than a tray, but top loading ftw. I still have a movie stuck in my fat ps3 that I haven’t removed yet. Only negative I can see in this redesign was the decsion to continue with 2 USB ports instead of going back to 4. There are more peripherals out now and 4 USB ports would have been better. Looking forward to seeing what you guys come up with for the ps4, hopefully possitive feedback is acknoledged for its design (don’t mind my spelling errors, I’m commenting from my phone and too lazy to use the dictionary, hah).

  • I’ve been looking for another PS3 to get for the upstairs but not at this price. I would like to buy one at $199 without any bundled game. Those ridges along the top are ugly but luckily I won’t be able to see them when it’s under my TV.

  • why don’t just bring back PS2 compatibility? I’ll rebuy for sure.

  • Well my thoughts? Well first the design it looks very very close the PS2 slim ( I know I still have the system in my room). As for disc tray I really dont care as long it runs the disc that i want play and lets me play it for hours im find with whatever. I also would love to get a new one with a bigger Hard Drive ( I got a eye ball on the 500GB )

  • I just want a bare bones PS3 for less that $200. I do not need or want a games bundle as I already have a PS3 and Uncharted 3. Come on Sony give the people what they want.

  • Will be buying but will hate transferring all my crap.

  • Did you bring back PS2 compatibility?! Regardless of these bells and whistles, PS2 compatibility was the most important option I was wanting. I have a whole bunch of PS2 games that are collecting dust because when I purchased a PS3 that originally had PS2 compatibility, I thought Sony was serious about wanting to give me what I wanted and when I got the “Yellow Light Of Death” a few times, I had to eventually buy the another one, AGAIN, and it had to be the slim version which ripped me off of that feature that I paid for in the first place. By now at least this version could have it back. Use software emulation for gods sake!

  • Oh man, it’s sooooooo beautful! i really want one. :/ i love the silver stand .
and the new design just rocks

  • cool a new ps3 is good but unlike the old slim :D

  • already own a 120gb slim model but this thing looks damn sexy so i might just get me one of these on october 30th

  • hmm kind of a sneaky release date, don’t you think? a month before the Wii U…. i don’t know

to buy! or not to buy!

  • Overpriced. Where is the 16GB SSD model for $199? That would sell like HOTCAKES Sony!! Lets see: $270 for 6 year old PS3 vs $299 for the BRAND NEW nex-gen Wii U. Which is the shopping mom going to buy for Timmy this holiday season?

  • ^ hahaha Wii U is a puny next-gen. and it’s $400, and another $50 for a normal controller.

  • As long as this has a better wireless internet built in this will be perfect.

  • I still have a big Japanese silver fat that seems to heat my whole apartment during the winter time. How does this newer model compare in terms of power consumption, noise level, and heat levels to those of the classic models?

  • will it be available for EU, too ?

  • How do you not lower the price? Yes this is a redesign but the hardware is still from the 2006!
Also, who’s bright idea was to RAISE the price, the consumer doesn’t care about what’s bundled once the price goes up.

  • IF IT DOENST PLAY PS2 GAMES OR HAVE 2 EXTRA USB PORTS ..NO THANK YOU..IM BETTER OFF JUST BUYING A 500GB MEMORY DRIVE FOR 50 BUCKS AND USE ALL MY SAVEDD MONEY ON THE NEW GAMES COMING OUT LIKE AC3 AND PSASBR :P

  • @101

    PS3 Diet Slim!

    @119

Who are you kidding? The MSRP of the Wii U is $299. We know that you have to buy a bunch of other crap to have a functional system but Timmy’s Mom does not.

  • It looks like Kit from Knight Rider!

  • Will it be available in Canada too on 25th?

  • Will this model bring wifi 802.11 N ? 150-300mbps ?

  • Wow, I might just pick up the 500gb one for a larger hdd, an extra controller and ACIII! :D
I think it would totally be worth it!
Just gotta see what the final price for that one will be. :)

  • HDMI input / pass-thru, Please !!

  • “Smaller, Lighter PS3 Model Unveiled” because this is an important feature for a device that sits under your television.

  • This is my complain now about the new console.

First is this now going to be called the super slim or what ?

Second really the price should of been the following

    16GB model – $150
    250GB Model- $200
    500 GB model-$250

I don’t see why it has been 3 years since the slim released and its only 50 dollars lower than what it originally came out at. The Hard drives are so cheap and the way I see it is now Sony is making a good 150 profit off each console being sold. By making these new PS3’s with the sliding cover. To me it looks decent but I wouldn’t sell my slim for this with that price.

  • Hey John Koller, seeing as how while you’re in charge the PS3 is coming last in the US and getting whooped by the 360 every single month maybe you should consider some changes to the way the PS3 is marketed.

Making the console more expensive seems counter productive. Not sure who came up with that bright idea but it should be cheaper.

Release the 12GB in the US. Cheap base model to go head to head with the 4GB 360. This seems like a no-brainer.

Release the white model in the US. Consumers like options.

  • Wait, you are charging $20 extra for a bundle with a $40 packin game? Have you lost your minds?

  • Packins are supposed to be free. You’ve packed in 2 free games every holiday season with those retailer specific bundles you offer, so you know how to do things properly. What gives?

  • Ahh, crud. Figured this would happen. I just bought a new PS3 not too long ago. Oh well, maybe I’ll get the Vita when it gets a price drop.

  • I already own two copies of Uncharted 3, I plan to buy the GOTY Edition of the game again, though. I really do want That bundled PS3 for more memory and to throw the box in my Naughty Dog Collection since I’m a huge fan! I sitll don’t have the first bundled PS3 for my collection.

  • first things first, to those asking how to load a disk, take a close look at the pic, you slide the top cover to the left to insert or remove a disc. Oh and those wondering about increased cpu, ram, or wifi N the answers are NO, NO, & MORE NO. Its soley a cost reduction move, increased hdd’s could’ve been applied to the existing hardware.

Couple things bother me about this. Most glaring is the price INCREASE, yeah surprised me too on the released of cost reduced aging hardware. PS3 is 6 years old folks, economies of scale have long since kicked in so prices increases at this point are completely unjustified. No excuses. Also the phased rollout of the 500 gig model is odd unless there’s a shortage somewhere. 1 last thing european sources are stating the 12 gig model, should it ever get released here will need an “adaptor” available only from sony to uses a normal 2.5″ HDD unlike the current models of PS3. Thats just bizarre & unwarranted poor design choice.

  • smart move considering we all know the PS4 won’t be released until 11/17/2016 or later

  • will there be a component cable slot?

  • gold818 since its never been announced its more truthful to say nobody knows it. In reality what the competitors doing will change that. PS4 can’t be a year late to the party like the PS3 was. that kind of mistake twice would be fatal. I’m sure theres overzelous microsoft fanboys would love to see that but I have my doubts Sony, even with their flawed logic really wants to cater to that bunch.

  • So why is my reply to gold818 blocked anyways? No swearing or ad hom attacks that we’ve seen far too often here in the blog comments were used.

  • Should have ditched the HDD included Version like they have in EU and Japan.

Flash Memory version as a base and say……
$220 but buy your own HDD and our PS3 specific caddy.

  • Is it possible to change the 12 GB HDD with my old 320 HDD?? Or does it not works because I have read that it will be 12 gb Flash Memory?

  • FINALLY! I HAVE A REASON TO TRADE MY 60GB AND 320GB…BIGGER IS ALWAYS BETTER! AND I CAN CONSOLIDATE THE OTHER 2 AT LAST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @111 U COULD GO TO A PAWN SHOP AND GET A BARE BONES PS3..
