New Hack ‘n Slasher Realms of Ancient War Hits PSN Tuesday

Realms of Ancient War has been in development for over two years, inspired by our deep love of hack ‘n slash games. We’ve played practically every game in the genre (including some pretty obscure PS2 games) to seek out the best ideas from the past. The rest of our inspiration comes from our designers, who came up with crazy ideas to give our title its own signature fast-and-furious style of action. Every decision was met with one simple question: “Is this a fun idea?”

  • Do you want to spawn dozens of huge swords from the ground? Yes!
  • Should the screen be covered with hordes of enemies, all bent on killing you? Oh yes!
  • What about controlling the minds of gigantic enemies, making them pound the crap out of their minion buddies? Hell yes!
  • Maybe you could ride a flashy pink pony and battle your enemies with a giant toilet brush? Uh… let’s forget that idea…

We catered every aspect of RAW toward action lovers – you won’t find a lot of dialogue boxes or tiresome sidequests. While the story will keep you intrigued, there are no drawn-out conversations to get in the way of the monster-slaying. Our three character classes are instantly familiar: barbarian, wizard and a female rogue. But we’ve added a ton of unique skills and spells to keep things feeling fresh. The goal was to develop our own “best case scenario” of the hack ‘n slash games we have all loved since Gauntlet.

A couple notes on gameplay – we’re really excited about the “focus actions” in RAW that let you use two commands with just one button. For instance, you can either quickly tap fireball, or hold the same button to create a massive fire meteor that will destroy a whole line of enemies. Our favorite feature is the ability to incarnate certain bad guys, including big ones. See that huge captain and all his minions rushing to kill you? Project yourself into his body, take out the little henchmen, then give up control and take out the big guy all by himself. Clever…

For some spontaneous fun, it was crucial that our game include drop-in, drop-out co-op multiplayer. Even in the middle of your campaign, if a friend comes to your house, all they have to do is hit start to dive into the action.

RAW will be available on PSN September 25th — we hope you enjoy it!

  • Looks and sounds interesting. How come no video was posted? I want to see the game in action. Will there be a demo?

  • i was excited for this till i read the bad reviews from destructoid and some gamefaqs users who got the xbl version. :/

  • It’s not mentioned anywhere in here, but I figured I’d ask:

This is PS3 only, not Vita, correct?
Will there be a demo next week?
    What’s the price?

  • @3 from what i read its suppose to be $14.99. hope that is wrong.

  • @Ryumoau, that answers my question. Sounds god awful.

  • @Julien Millet

I’m speaking as a consumer and as an Indie developer when I say this. Please provide video or at the very least screen shots for your game. The concept art for this game is very beautiful and please let your concept artist know that I said that., but it does not reflect the end product, just the idea and premise of it. Gamers need to see what your selling, they need to know why they should be interested in the game. Life is not so easy that the idea and original vision can encompass the product as a whole. Marketing is hard I get that, but even a video of yourself playing the game and describing what is going on can go a long way. Jeff Rubenstien and the other members of the PS Blog staff have done an excellent job of show casing products in the past so you may wish to consult with them and see if they can help.

In the end I look forward to seeing this game and possibly playing it, it sounds great on paper (or in this case blog post), but we really need to see what we should be getting excited about. Next big window would be to have another blog post on Tuesday September 25th or on Monday September 24th to help drive the point home, hopefully that’s already in the cards for next week.

  • considering the game just came out yesterday on xbl i wont take what you said and iv seen screenshots this game looks awesome especially if you like the genre would like to see a vid in action but im safe to say it could get my money and lots of coop play

  • will plus get a discount?

  • @ 3,I think it’s coming with a $14.99 price tag as well, looks like a decent game with 2 player co-op included so in my opinion that’s not too bad.

Btw, somebody better make me a game allowing me to ride a flashy pink pony and fight enemies with a giant toilet brush or somebody gona feel my wrath!!

  • Will the person dropping in be able to log in as another user and possibly gain trophies?

  • I guess I’m gonna be THAT guy… Is this coming to Vita?

  • Think of it as Diablo / Torchlight for PS3. As #11 mentioned, it would be nice to see on the Vita! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N2zzYdNpzfI

  • @11, if it doesn’t say it’s coming to the Vita, I’d guess it’s not. The internet’s all about asking about stuff that isn’t there, ha. “Here’s A, B, and C.” “Where’s D?” No harm in asking, though! Their website doesn’t list it as a platform.

    I like the drop-in multiplayer!

  • This game looks amazing! I have been watching it for awhile via Facebook! :D
    Co-op and amazing graphics!

  • The videos for this game look pretty good, but the reviews I’ve read aren’t very flattering, which is really disappointing. Looks like Xbox will keep its reputation of having the better games for fans of Diablo style Action RPGs.

I am dying for the next true incarnations of Baldur’s Gate and Champions of Norrath, but PS3 keeps disappointing. Where’s our Torchlight? Sacred 2 was only ok. Dungeon Hunter was fun but not very innovative.

Still a big fan of PS3, but fixing this would really delight me.

  • its coming out next week and theres no video? It sounds intriguing tho

  • Screenshot or it didn’t happen.

  • I saw the video uploaded by PlayStation on youtube, I am definitely intrigued but I just wish there was character customization. :(

  • This game comes out next week and all you put on this post are concept art images? ……. terrible marketing, at least a video or a picture of the game sheesh lol

  • I think it looks fun. Wish it was coming out for the Vita.

  • If it’s anything like the ps2 Drakkenguard series I would be pleased. No great story, graphics okay, but high kill count (1000+) per level

  • “…you won’t find a lot of dialogue boxes or tiresome sidequests.”
Thank you! Brutal and straight to the point is how I like it!

  • Free with PS+? Also, will this be seeing the light of day on Vita? I’d be happy to buy this on the Vita.

  • Hey! That riding the flashy pony weilding a giant toilet brush sounded fun! Some times optional crazy stuff like that is fun. EXAMPLE: check out Mr. Toots in Red Faction Armageddon. Heck eather way I’m interested in this game. This almost reminds me of the Dynasty Warriors franchise, but with alot more fantsy/ magical stuff.

  • saying psn is rather vague, is it for vita aswell or no. i would rather not want my excitement going up over nothing.

  • @Ryumoau,
Seems most of the reviews were complaining about the same lame thing people complained about for Diablo 3. “Wahhh, the games too hard, the game doesn’t autosave for me because am too stupid to save myself…death is actually a penalty!”
Looks great to me, and hoping for a PS+ discount. Only beef I see is that it’s not 4 player co-op. I will try a demo first if their is one naturally. But a Diablo 3 clone that will no doubt be better than Dungeon Hunter Alliance is welcomed on console!

  • @ArchAngelMai: People complained about Diablo 3 because it’s a terrible game when compared to Diablo 2. You seem to be making crap up out of nowhere just to try to make a point. Doesn’t work when it’s a lie though.

Will this game be good? I dunno, but I’ll be sure to check it out at least.

  • Got that right Diablo3 is ruin for me terrible game.

  • @16 you stupid

  • I downloaded this game from PSN Europe last week. The game is bad, very bad… I could not stand the trial finished. I stopped and deleted the game.
    Sorry guys.
