my guess is that majority of people owning a PS3 are soo ignorant they dont know how to insert a disc in a slippy slide slot all automatic. so they “stuck” the cd in the drive and cant remove it, then they call SONY CS for a PS3 warranty replacement service, then SONY have to pay for all shipping, fixing and replacement. thats the ONLY possible reason at “why” they downgraded the disc tray, so you can open it up by the top to be SURE NO ONE get the CD stuck inside and no more “hello sony, my disc is stuck inside” return.
and no more replacement for a dick stuck in the PS3.

so my 2 cents is that they save money to make a cheaper PS3 and they save money for eventual return.
so why the price is higher?

because they love money! ;)

PRICE DROP…

This new model looks cheap with the sliding disk tray. It has to be cheaper to produce, so it’s about time Sony dropped the price to $200. I already have a FAT and 2 slims, but if I has to buy a new PS3 (God forbid), I wouldn’t want to pay more than $200 for this model even with all the extras (UC3 and Dust voucher). Also, like #40 said… “Where is Christina Lee?”… and I want Pulse back. I can understand doing away with Qore, but Pulse was awesome. Bring it back!!!

@58

By logic there should have been a massive price drop to compete with the lower end xbox 360 model, Lowering the price does not de-value the console it just shows progression. Every new model something is either removed or cheapened. They’ve been going in reverse while their competition is progressing. Loyal PS fan since the ps1 era but extremely disappointed with their decision making this gen.

63

+ Ryumoau on September 25th, 2012 at 8:44 am said:

@59 i agree they should have had an option for a basic model. It wouldn’t matter what harddrive size they gave us, since i’m just going to replace it with my 500 GB one anyway. I don’t even care about the new Uncharted game, and the Dust 514 beta was pretty boring.

Calling other people delusional because you don’t agree is dumb. You’re comparing holiday sales to standard MSRP? Of course the holidays will provide discounts, The other console was at 129.99 with bundles. With Nintendo’s new console priced the same as the ps3, many casuals will go for the new thing. The PS3 has it’s core gamers. now it needs the casual market.

Casuals have the idea where newer = better.

If the ps3 was 199.99 last year it should be cheaper than that this year. Once again, progression

With a crappy economy, your best bet is a decent price drop, otherwise you find yourself losing money…oh wait

Looks really nice. But, Sony really should include a HDMI cord in these new units. If I can buy a 6ft HDMI for a buck and change off the web. I would think it would only cost Sony maybe $.50 to include one. It never made sense to sell a Blu-Ray HD compatible platform with SD cables.

No, the other console, that is the crapbox, had bundles for $150, a 4GB console with 2 games. Sorry but that’s garbage even at that price. PS3 is not ready to lay down and die, and look cheap and dated. This new competitor is selling 7-year old tech for $350. The PS3 will be priced as low as $199 with 2012 games, and more content. $300 buys you the new design, a 500GB console, 30 days of PS+ and a brand new blockbuster AC3. If you don’t appreciate the value in that then get the $199 discounted PS3 which will no doubt be bundled with a couple of very good 2012 games and PS+.

PSone was a beautiful redesign, my favourite console design ever in fact. If there’d been a matte charcoal version I’d have snapped up a second one.

PS2′s first major redesign had the ugly shiny strip next to the disc tray. PS2′s second redesign removed the shiny strip and made the whole tray cover an ugly, uneven shiny plastic finish instead.

PS3′s first major redesign (the current slim) was good apart from the change of shape, rectangle shapes look better than square ones.

This PS3 redesign brings back the rectangle shape but also shiny. The problem is the grey-slightly-brownish shiny finish isn’t a deep black like the original PS3 and probably doesn’t have the translucency, reducing the cheap full-reflective property most shiny consoles have.

Is it true that PS Store to get new design in October?

86

+ Shin-Ra on September 25th, 2012 at 9:49 am said:

I can’t make my mind up whether I dislike or just think the ribbed texture is ok. I don’t think it’ll age well and obviously it’ll make wiping the system clean more difficult. The difference in height between the flimsy tray cover and what it slides over is unsightly. The violent tray opening when the system’s horizontal looks and sounds cheap, the dampened opening when the system is vertical should have also applied to horizontal.

I think this design’s too ambitious for the cheaper materials being used and the replacement of the slot loading BD drive makes it inconvenient to use horizontal in an entertainment centre with limited hand space above the system; and I wonder how sturdy the system is vertical for pushing a disc onto the spindle, without a stand – which few will buy.

PS3 is still kicking and won’t be dying anytime soon, a permanent price drop doesn;t mean it’s dying…the PS2 is probably the best example. The economy is down the crapper, not everyone is fortunate to have all these holiday deals or even aware of them. You know where the ps3 sells the least? North America. Why is it that the once red ring of death infested console still selling despite still being hackable and the games pirated to this day? It has some sort of value but the average joe will look at the price and go for what’s cheaper.

As for the ps3 not looking cheaper and dated? I think they’ve accomplished that with the “new” look don’t you think?
I”m not here to pick a fight with you, It’s all good I’m just stating my take on this that’s all. I own a ps3 and does not affect me to say the least. But for the people who are on the fence? It doesn’t help they’d have to rely on false info from some salesman trying to meet their quotas.

88

+ Shin-Ra on September 25th, 2012 at 9:58 am said:

Also I thought it was 25% lighter, 20% smaller in volume. The numbers are the other way round in the video.

As much as I dislike separate power bricks, maybe the PSU should have been separate for this redesign, to make it more strikingly small so there wasn’t so much pressure to make it striking with different textures and shapes.

It was never going to be PSone small but much nearer.

I feel like too much emphasis was put on (manufacture – BoM) price reduction and not on making it a more appealing new design.

Not to mention the lack of 802.11n WiFi, on this system Sony markets as a reliable Hi-Def streamer.

With PSP and PS3′s WiFi never getting upgraded, I start to wonder if there was some stupid design decision at the start that actively prevents a major WiFi upgrade.

When I first saw “New PS3 Model” I thought they were talking about Maya Butler.

Also, you can tell the execs forced her to say that her favorite part was the new disc tray, which is exactly the part that will be most reviled and open to criticism.

92

+ Shin-Ra on September 25th, 2012 at 10:14 am said:

A lot of these problems could be fixed if SCEI didn’t continue the one-size-fits-all manufacturing approach for their consoles.

Mass produce the cheap systems in the tens of millions as you are.

And design a much more profitable, high-end SKU using premium materials – aluminium, glass (Vita) etc, quieter more expensive fan or cooling system, PS2 backwards compatibility, more USB ports (but these should really be on the back of the cheap models too) and generally higher quality components. The same existing PS3 functionality, so it’s not like the PSX which added functionality and complexity and was probably too ambitious and expensive for its time, people weren’t taking media centres seriously like they do even consoles now.

Sony’s PR team sucks or they don’t have the money to advertise its games. Too many games have been sent out to die because of poor advertising.

Twisted Metal

I want a huge advertising push in the holiday season for their new titles. Sony needs to get their act together now and stop ruining their good reputation.
